Computational time for numerical simulation of transient incompressible viscous flow is governed by numerical methods to solve the Poisson equation of the pressure. In order to improve the computational efficiency of the SOR method, a mathematical analysis was conducted in the present study to derive the spectral radius, i. e., the maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of the iteration matrix for a discrete Poisson equation in staggered mesh system. The derived spectral radii for the point, line and area Jacobi iteration matrices are applicable to the Dirichlet, the mixed boundaryvalue and the Neumann problems in an n-dimensional rectangular region. The validity of the optimum relaxation parameter of the SOR method, which was calculated by the derived spectral radii, was confirmed by numerical experiments. Furthermore, a simple estimation method of the optimum relaxation parameter for the non-rectangular region was presented for transient flow analyses.

We developed a new instrumentation for measuring traveling characteristics of wheelchair and set up running roads with various surface shapes in our laboratory. We measured driving torque and whole-body vibration during running on these road surfaces. Root-mean-square (RMS) values of acceleration vibration were calculated for the three directions according to the ISO 2631 procedure.The driving torque of this system, like a manual wheelchair on the market, increases in proportion to height of steps on the road surface. In steady state running, the driving torque increases in proportion to velocity of wheelchair. The whole-body vibration at the sheet of wheelchair increases in proportion to both the heights of steps on the road surface and the velocity of wheelchair. In both a field and a laboratory, the vertical component of the vibration was greater than the fore-aft or horizontal vibration. The whole-body vibration value of a dummy mounted wheelchair shows a similar tendency to that of human beings. The following expression is derived from the above: this new measuring system is effective in detecting the presence of the vibration and the driving torque of manual wheelchair on various road surfaces.

We have developed a new ultra-low pressure method for obtaining a finer finish in super-finishing using vitrified bonded cubic boron nitride (cBN) abrasive stones, recommended for use in the burnishing stage. This is a finer finish with very small or no stock removal, than ordinarily occurs in a conventional process using aluminum oxide or silicon carbide stones. We have fabricated a prototype super-finishing machine that provides stable ultra-low pressures using an air slider. Super-finishing was attempted using ultra-low pressures (less than 0.1MPa) with cBN abrasives averaging less than 8μm in diameter. As a result, super-finishing with a processing pressure of 0.02MPa could be achieved using fine-grit cBN. The study demonstrated that it is possible to obtain a surface finish on the nano-order under ultra-low pressure conditions.

Strongly motivated by every stakeholder not to repeat Mihama pipe rupture accident in August 2004. JSME Main Committee on Codes & Standards on Power Generation Facilities immediately launched a special task force to develop Rules on Pipe Wall Thinning Management for BWR, PWR and Fossile Power Plants respectively. The authors describes the process of the development of Rules for BWR Power Plants from the view point of collections and analysis of fields data of pipe wall thinning.

Blood flow in microvessels, such as arterioles, capillaries and venules, whose diameter ranges from 5 to 50μm, is responsible for the maintenance of tissue and organ functions. The measurement of microvascular blood flow velocity with high measurement accuracy is essential for basic and clinical studies in the assessment of flow shear stress at the vascular wall in relation to substance exchange between blood and tissue. This paper aimed to evaluate the velocity field of blood flow in microvessels with high spatial and temporal resolution. By using micro PIV system, the velocity distributions of red blood cells flowing in rat mesenteric arterioles, including near the wall in the axisymmetric plane, were obtained. Ensemble averaged time-series of velocity profiles in the cross-sections were calculated for comparison. It was shown that the arteriole velocity profile was blunt in the center region of the vessel cross-section while it was steep in the near wall region.

高比速度フランシス水車ランナの出口流れを非定常流れ計測用のピトー管を使って測定し,ランナ出口部におけるベーン間の流れのようすを明らかにした.特に,油膜流跡実験結果と対比させて検討することにより,ランナベーンの後流部やベーン負圧面に逆流が発生した時の流れのようすを明らかにした.

This paper deals with topological optimization of elastic frames by means of the boundary cycle used in the algebraic topology and genetic algorithm. The optimum frame is so defined in this study that the deformation of an interesting point of the frame is minimal for a given limit of weight, and that any members with a tip not connected to other members, except loading points, are eliminated. The optimum topology is searched efficiently through the boundary cycle which yields the one-dimensional simplicial complex without any tip, satisfying the topological condition of no idle tip present. The boundary cycle is derived from the chain and boundary homomorphism which plays an important role of decoding of the genotype into the phenotype in the genetic algorithm, and is included in the string used in the genetic algorithm for the representation of frame topology. The numerical examples are concerned with minimization of the deformation of two-dimensional frames subject to bending, and three-dimensional frames subject to torsion or expansion.

The propulsive characteristics of water rockets have been analyzed experimentally by the thrust test stand. It can measure the unsteady thrust force acting on a PET bottle and the air pressure inside the bottle simultaneously. The result of the observation by a video camera shows that air precedes water when it is about to be discharged entirely, and the measured thrust history indicates that it decreases suddenly then. We have developed a flow regulator to reduce the precursor air discharge which is considered as a result of the swirling flow inside the bottle. The experimental results show that the air discharge is suppressed and the thrust history is improved to have a potential for higher altitude.

有限円柱の一つの端面に偏心円形熱源のある問題は,平面熱応力問題として解決できない厚肉円板の,一方の平たん部の境界面に偏心円形熱源の問題ともなり,工業上有用性が多い.この問題は完全ないわゆる三次元熱応力問題による解析によらねばならない.本研究は熱弾性変位ポテンシャル,ミッチェルおよびブシネの関数の三者に関する熱弾性基礎方程式を解いて,非定常熱応力分布を求めた.
