Aims: Whether the multi-dimensional data of serially measured blood pressure contains information for predicting the future risk of death in elderly individuals in nursing homes is unclear. Methods: Of the elderly individuals staying in a nursing home, 19,740 and 40,055 individuals with serially measured blood pressure from day 1 to 365 (for AI-long) and 1 to 90 (for AI-short) along with the death information at day 366 to 730 and 91-365 were included. The neural network-based artificial intelligence (AI) was applied to find the relationship between BP time-series and the future risks of death in both populations. Results: AI-long found a significant relationship between the serially measured BP from day 1 to day 365 days and the risk of death occurring 366-730 days with c-statistics of 0.57 (95% CI: 0.51-0.63). AI-short also found a significant relationship between the serially measured BP from day 1 to day 90 and the rate of death occurring 91-365 days with c-statistics of 0.58 (95%CI: 0.52-0.63). Conclusion: Our results suggest that neural network-based AI could find the hidden subtle relationship between multi-dimensional data of serially measured BP and the future risk of death in apparently healthy elderly Japanese individuals under nursing care.

Aim: This study aimed to determine whether sleep disturbance, defined as the wakeup frequency at night, is associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia and to explore possible sex differences. Methods: A total of 1,368 adults aged 19–70 years were included in the study of lifestyles and atherogenic dyslipidemia at the National Taiwan University Hospital in the period of 2008–2012. They completed a questionnaire regarding lifestyle information and sleep quality, including sleep hour duration, use of sleeping pills, and wakeup frequency during nighttime sleep. The measured lipid profiles included total cholesterol, triglycerides, low- and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C and HDL-C, respectively), non-HDL-C, and small dense LDL-C (sdLDL-C). Multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine habitual interrupted sleep and the odds ratio of atherogenic dyslipidemia following adjustment for conventional risk factors and for sex-based subgroup analysis. Results: A wakeup frequency ≥ 3 times per night was independently associated with an increased risk [odds ratio (95% confidence interval)] of dyslipidemia was 1.96 (1.17–3.28), and non-HDL-C ≥ 160 mg/dL was 1.78 (1.09–2.89). A higher wakeup frequency was associated with increased atherogenic dyslipidemia in women than in men. The multivariate adjusted relative risks for non-HDL ≥ 160 mg/dL and cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL were 3.05 (1.27–7.34) and 4.01(1.29-12.45) for female individuals with insomnia and those with a wakeup frequency ≥ 2 times per night, respectively. Conclusion: A higher wakeup frequency was associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia in Taiwanese adults, particularly in women. This study also provided another evidence of increasing cardiovascular diseases in subjects with habitual interrupted sleep.

Aims: The evidence for the impact of alcohol consumption on long-term mortality among myocardial infarction (MI) survivors was limited. We aimed to examine whether alcohol consumption was associated with cause-specific and all-cause mortality in men with or without a history of MI. Methods: A total of 32,004 men aged 40-79 years with no history of MI and 1,137 male MI survivors, free of stroke and cancer, were followed through the end of 2009. Alcohol consumption was assessed using self-administered questionnaires at baseline and five years. Results: In MI survivors, consuming 23-45 g/day of alcohol was associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality compared to never drinkers: the multivariable hazard ratio was 0.36 (95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.80). In non-MI men, a 10-26% lower risk was observed at <23 or 23-45 g/day with the U-shaped association for CHD, cardiovascular disease, other causes, and all causes (P-quadratic <0.001). Conclusion: Alcohol consumption of 23-45 g/day was associated with a lower CHD mortality in MI survivors as so in men without MI.

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is the most underdiagnosed, underestimated and undertreated of the atherosclerotic vascular diseases despite its poor prognosis. There may be racial or contextual differences in the Asia-Pacific region as to epidemiology, availability of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, and even patient treatment response. The Asian Pacific Society of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases (APSAVD) thus coordinated the development of an Asia-Pacific Consensus Statement (APCS) on the Management of PAD. Objectives: The APSAVD aimed to accomplish the following: 1) determine the applicability of the 2016 AHA/ACC guidelines on the Management of Patients with Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease to the Asia-Pacific region; 2) review Asia-Pacific literature; and 3) increase the awareness of PAD. Methodology: A Steering Committee was organized to oversee development of the APCS, appoint a Technical Working Group (TWG) and Consensus Panel (CP). The TWG appraised the relevance of the 2016 AHA/ACC PAD Guideline and proposed recommendations which were reviewed by the CP using a modified Delphi technique. Results: A total of 91 recommendations were generated covering history and physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment of PAD—3 new recommendations, 31 adaptations and 57 adopted statements. This Asia-Pacific Consensus Statement on the Management of PAD constitutes the first for the Asia-Pacific Region. It is intended for use by health practitioners involved in preventing, diagnosing and treating patients with PAD and ultimately the patients and their families themselves.

Rosuvastatin is a novel statin that has been shown to produce large dose-dependent reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in Western hypercholesterolemic patients. Rosuvastatin dose response was assessed in a randomized, double-blind phase II trial in which 112 Japanese patients with fasting LDL-C > 160 and < 220 mg/dl and triglycerides < 300 mg/dl received placebo or rosuvastatin 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, or 40 mg once daily for 6 weeks. LDL-C change from baseline showed a linear dose response (p < 0.0001 for slope of regression line) over the rosuvastatin dose range, with each doubling of dose producing an additional 5.12% reduction. Mean reductions (least-squares mean percentage change from baseline from ANOVA) in LDL-C were 35.8% to 66.0% and significantly different from placebo at all doses (p < 0.0001). Linear dose response was also observed for total cholesterol (TC) and apolipoprotein (apo) B, but not for triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or apo A-I or A-II. Mean changes at 6 weeks were − 25.5 to − 45.1% for TC, − 16.0 to − 26.2% for TG, + 7.5 to + 12.8% for HDL-C, − 31.9 to − 57.8% for apo B, + 5.5 to + 10.0% for apo A-I, and + 0.4 to + 8.1% for apo A-II. Rosuvastatin was well tolerated. Although there was some suggestion of increased frequency of treatment-related adverse events at higher doses, there were no clear dose relationships in safety parameters. Only one patient withdrew from the study because of a treatment-related adverse event. No patients had clinically significant elevations in liver transaminases or creatine kinase. Rosuvastatin produces good dose-related reductions in LDL-C and beneficial changes in other lipid fractions in Japanese hypercholesterolemic patients and is well tolerated.

Aim: Weight change could have many health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between weight change and mortality risk due to total cardiovascular disease (CVD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), and stroke among Japanese. Methods: We used Suita Study data from 4,746 people aged 30-79 years in this prospective cohort study. Weight change was defined as the difference between baseline weight and weight at age 20. We used Cox proportional hazards models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality for 1) participants with a weight change (>10, 5 to 10, -5 to -10, and <-10 kg) compared to those with stable weight (-4.9 to 4.9 kg) and 2) participants who moved from one body mass index category (underweight, normal weight, or overweight) to another compared to those with normal weight at age 20 and baseline. Results: Within a median follow-up period of 19.9 years, the numbers of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality were 268, 132, and 79, respectively. Weight loss of >10 kg was associated with the increased risk of total CVD mortality 2.07 (1.29, 3.32) and stroke mortality 3.02 (1.40, 6.52). Moving from normal weight at age 20 to underweight at baseline was associated with the increased risk of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality: 1.76 (1.12, 2.77), 2.10 (1.13, 3.92), and 2.25 (1.05, 4.83), respectively. Conclusion: Weight loss, especially when moving from normal to underweight, was associated with the increased risk of CVD mortality.

Aim: Reports have shown that physical activity is inversely associated with heart failure risk, but evidence in Asian populations is lacking. We sought to examine the impacts of walking and sports participation on heart failure mortality among a Japanese population. Methods: We involved 36,223 Japanese men and 50,615 women (aged 40–79 years) who completed a self-administered questionnaire between 1988 and 1990. We divided participants into four categories of walking (<0.5, 0.5, 0.6–1.0, and ≥ 1 h/day) and sports participation (<1, 1–2, 3–4, and ≥ 5 h/week) and examined associations with activity and heart failure mortality through 2009. Results: We found inverse associations between physical activity and heart failure mortality. The multivariable hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest category of walking time compared with the second-lowest category were 0.76 (0.59–0.99) in men and 0.78 (0.61–0.99) in women, while the ratios for the highest category of sports participation time compared with the second-lowest category were 0.62 (0.41–0.93) in men and 1.09 (0.73–1.65) in women. The lower hazard ratios in the highest categories of walking and sports participation time in men became no longer statistically significant after excluding heart failure deaths for the first 5, 10, and 15 years for walking time and 10 and 15 years for sports participation. However, in women, the low hazard ratios for the highest category ≥ 1.0 h/day of walking time did not change materially. Conclusions: Physical activity was associated with a lower risk of mortality from heart failure in this Japanese community-based population. The attenuated and nonsignificant association of walking and sports participation with the risk in men after exclusion of first 5–15 years heart failure death was probably due to changes in physical activity and death certificate diagnosis during the follow-up and reverse causation. However, the persistent inverse association between walking and the risk in women suggests a beneficial preventive effect on heart failure.

Aim: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is recommended for lowering blood pressure (BP). Our previous single-arm trial revealed that the Japanese cuisine-based DASH (J-DASH) diet (supplying NaCl 8.0 g per day) reduced BP and improved cardiometabolic biomarkers. The present study's primary objective was to test the feasibility of the J-DASH diet based on its effects on the BP and BP variability of subjects with untreated high-normal BP or stage 1 hypertension. Methods: The 6-month study period was held from December 2015 to August 2016. The participants were recruited through advertisements in local newspapers and our website and from among randomized participants at Yamaguchi University Hospital. The 2-month treatments included the following: the J-DASH-1 diet 1×/day or the J-DASH-2 diet providing a fish hamburger-patty 2×/day (5 days/week respectively). The control group consumed their usual diets. For the subsequent 4 months, all participants consumed their usual diets. The main outcome measure was the feasibility of the J-DASH diet. We also collected the data of clinic BP and home BP (by automatic BP monitor), cardiometabolic biomarkers, and lifestyle and psychosocial parameters during the intervention phase. We examined behavior changes throughout the study period, and the diets' safety. Results: Fifty-one participants were recruited; following screening, 48 met the inclusion criteria and were randomized by central allocation. Eight participants were eliminated based on exclusion criteria, and the 40 participants were randomly allocated to the J-DASH 1 and J-DASH 2 groups (n=13 each) and the usual-diet group (n=14). The participants' mean age was 50 years, and 44% were women. The three groups' clinic BP values were not significantly different, but the home BP values were lower in the J-DASH 1 group and lowest in the J-DASH 2 group compared to the usual-diet group and differed significantly among the three groups throughout the study period (p<0.0001). The home BP variability was significantly lower in the J-DASH groups compared to the usual-diet group throughout the study period (p<0.01). The other indices including fish oil showed little differences among the groups throughout the study period. Conclusions: The J-DASH diet was feasible to improve home BP and stabilize its variability, and it did so more effectively than the participants' usual diets.

Aims: To investigate the association between circulating oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis and to examine whether this link is independent of other low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-related parameters. Methods: Totally, 804 subjects who were free of cardiovascular disease at baseline completed risk factor surveys and carotid ultrasound measurements in 2002 and 2012. Modified Poisson regression was performed to examine the association between baseline serum ox-LDL levels and the 10-year risk of progression of carotid atherosclerosis which was defined as the development of at least one new plaque in a previously plaque-free carotid segment at re-examination.Results: The mean age of the subjects was 58.6±7.7 years at baseline and 43.3% were men. A total of 504 (62.7%) subjects had carotid plaque progression at re-examination. Subjects in the intermediate and highest tertiles of ox-LDL had a significantly higher adjusted risk of atherosclerosis progression than those in the lowest tertile [relative risk (95% confidence interval) 1.17 (1.01–1.34) for the intermediate tertile and 1.23 (1.07–1.42) for the highest tertile]. This association was independent of baseline levels of LDL-C, total LDL particle number, and small LDL particle number. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that serum ox-LDL levels predict 10-year progression of subclinical atherosclerosis. Moreover, this effect is independent of the cholesterol content, the number, and the size of LDL particles.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the relationship of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) concentrations with ischemic stroke in a large-scale case–control study conducted among the hospital-based general population. Methods: We recruited 953 case–control sex- and age-matched pairs, and cases were confined to first acute ischemic stroke in this study. Fasting plasma TMAO was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectroscopy. Conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate odds ratios (OR) for the association of plasma TMAO with ischemic stroke. Results: We found that plasma TMAO concentrations in patients with ischemic stroke were significantly higher than that in the control group (median: 2.85 µmol/L vs. 2.33 µmol/L, P<0.001). In multivariable conditional logistic regression models, higher plasma TMAO concentrations were associated with increased odds of ischemic stroke [fully adjusted OR for highest vs. lowest TMAO quartile: 1.81; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27, 2.59; P for trend <0.001]. The multivariable-adjusted OR for ischemic stroke per 1 µmol/L increment of plasma TMAO was 1.05 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.08). Additionally, the positive association also persisted in subgroups stratified by age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol habits, history of diabetes, and history of hypertension. Conclusions: This study suggested a positive association between plasma TMAO and ischemic stroke. Further studies are required to explore the role of plasma TMAO concentrations in predicting stroke risk.

Aim: The latest Global Vascular Guidelines (GVG) recommend assessing the 2-year mortality risk in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) before revascularization. This study aimed to reveal whether the Wound, Ischemia and foot Infection (WIfI) classification, developed originally as a risk assessment tool for limb prognosis, would be useful in predicting the 2-year mortality risk in patients with CLTI in the era of GVG and WIfI. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 849 patients with CLTI who were primarily treated with endovascular therapy (EVT) between April 2010 and December 2016. The impact of baseline characteristics, including the WIfI classification on mortality risk, was investigated using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results: During a mean follow-up of 19.3 months, 243 deaths were observed. The 2-year mortality rate was 32.3%. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that WIfI classification stages (p=0.037), in addition to male sex (p=0.010), age (p<0.001), non-ambulatory status (p<0.001), body mass index (p=0.002), and hemodialysis (p <0.001), were independent predictors for an increased risk of mortality, while the Rutherford classification was not. Conclusions: WIfI classification stages were independently associated with mortality risk in patients with CLTI undergoing EVT, while the Rutherford classification was not. The WIfI classification would be a practical tool for planning the revascularization strategy in CLTI treatment.

The advent of new chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic treatments has markedly improved outcomes in patients with cancer. However, increasing numbers of elderly patients with cancer and prolonged periods of treatment have made the management of cardiovascular complications and treatment-induced cardiotoxicity an important concern, and onco-cardiology has received increasing attention. The number of patients with cardiotoxicity, particularly atherosclerotic lesions, and the usage of angiogenesis inhibitors have increased, making the involvement of onco-cardiologists essential for effective disease management. A paradigm shift in immunotherapy was caused by the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Because vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) in the cancer microenvironment and cancer immune function are interrelated angiogenesis inhibitors will most likely play an increasingly important role in combined immunotherapy. To ensure the optimal long-term diagnosis and long-term treatment of cancer and the effective management of treatment-related atherosclerotic diseases, the long-term continuous participation of onco-cardiologists is essential.

Aim: To examine the relationship between the intake of dietary vegetable protein and CVD mortality in a 15-year follow-up study of a representative sample of the Japanese population. Methods: A total of 7,744 participants aged 30 years or older (3,224 males and 4,520 females) who were free of CVD at baseline were included in this analysis. Vegetable protein intake (% energy) was assessed using a three-day semi-weighed dietary record at baseline. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using Cox's proportional hazards model after adjusting for confounding factors. Results: The total person-years studied were 107,988 with a mean follow-up period of 13.9 years. There were 1,213 deaths during the follow-up period, among which 354 (29.2%) were due to CVD. Vegetable protein intake was associated inversely with CVD and cerebral hemorrhage mortality, with the HRs for a 1% energy increment in vegetable protein intake being 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75–0.99) and 0.58 (95% CI, 0.35–0.95), respectively. In the subgroup analysis of participants with or without hypertension, the inverse association between vegetable protein intake and CVD mortality was more evident in the nonhypertensive group, with the HRs for CVD and stroke being 0.68 (95% CI, 0.50–0.94) and 0.50 (95% CI, 0.30–0.84), respectively. Conclusions: Vegetable protein intake may prevent future CVD, particularly in nonhypertensive subjects in the Japanese population. However, further studies are necessary to examine the biological mechanisms of this effect.

Aim: Increased epicardial fat volume (EFV) is an independent risk factor for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Although EFV increases with body mass index (BMI), some ACS patients have an increased EFV but normal BMI. We here investigated the clinical characteristics of nonobese ACS patients with an increased EFV.Methods: A total of 197 Japanese patients hospitalized for ACS was evaluated for EFV, abdominal visceral fat area (VFA), and lipid and glucose profiles. Control subjects comprised 141 individuals who were suspected of having ACS but whose coronary computed tomography findings were normal. Results: EFV was increased in ACS patients compared with control subjects (120±47 versus 95±45 mL, P<0.01). ACS patients were divided into four groups based on average EFV (120 mL) and a BMI obesity cutoff of 25 kg/m2. For the 30 nonobese ACS patients with an above-average EFV, EFV was positively correlated with VFA (r=0.23, P=0.031). These individuals were significantly older (74±10 years) and tended to have a higher homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance value (5.5±3.8) compared with other ACS patients. Among nonobese study subjects, EFV was independently associated with ACS (odds ratio=2.01, P=0.021) and correlated with abdominal circumference (r=0.26, P=0.017).Conclusion: Nonobese ACS patients with an increased EFV were elderly and tended to manifest insulin resistance. Measurement of EFV may prove informative for evaluation of ACS risk among elderly nonobese individuals with an increased abdominal girth.

Aim: The Framingham risk score (FRS) is one of the standard tools used to predict the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). No previous study has investigated its efficacy for a Japanese population cohort. The purpose of this study was to develop new coronary prediction algorithms for the Japanese population in the manner of the FRS, and to compare them with the original FRS. Methods: Our coronary prediction algorithms for Japanese were based on a large population-based cohort study (Suita study). The study population comprised 5,521 healthy Japanese. They were followed-up for 11.8 years on average, and 213 cases of CHD were observed. Multiple Cox proportional hazard model by stepwise selection was used to construct the prediction model. Results: Our coronary prediction algorithms for Japanese patients were based on a large populationbased cohort study (the Suita study). A multiple Cox proportional hazard model by stepwise selection was used to construct the prediction model. The C-statistics showed that the new model had better accuracy than the original and recalibrated Framingham scores. The net reclassification improvement (NRI) by the Suita score with the inclusion of CKD was 41.2% (P<0.001) compared with the original FRS. The recalibration of the FRS slightly improved the efficiency of the prediction, but it was still worse than the Suita score with the CKD model. The calibration analysis suggested that the original FRS and the recalibrated FRS overestimated the risk of CHD in the Japanese population. The Suita score with CKD more accurately predicted the risk of CHD. Conclusion: The FRS and recalibrated FRS overestimated the 10-year risk of CHD for the Japanese population. A predictive score including CKD as a coronary risk factor for the Japanese population was more accurate for predicting CHD than the original Framingham risk scores in terms of the C-statics and NRI.

Aim: Omega-3 fatty acids have emerged as a new option for controlling the residual risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) in the statin era. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is associated with reduced CAD risk in the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl-Intervention trial, whereas the Statin Residual Risk with Epanova in High Cardiovascular Risk Patients with Hypertriglyceridemia trial that used the combination EPA/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has failed to derive any clinical benefit. These contradictory results raise important questions about whether investigating the antiatherosclerotic effect of omega-3 fatty acids could help to understand their significance for CAD-risk reduction. Methods: The Attempts at Plaque Vulnerability Quantification with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Noncontrast T1-weighted Technic EPA/DHA study is a single-center, triple-arm, randomized, controlled, open-label trial used to investigate the effect of EPA/DHA on high-risk coronary plaques after 12 months of treatment, detected using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in patients with CAD receiving statin therapy. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to no-treatment, 2-g/day, and 4-g/day EPA/DHA groups. The primary endpoint was the change in the plaque-to-myocardium signal intensity ratio (PMR) of coronary high-intensity plaques detected by CMR. Coronary plaque assessment using computed tomography angiography (CTA) was also investigated. Results: Overall, 84 patients (mean age: 68.2 years, male: 85%) who achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of <100 mg/dL were enrolled. The PMR was reduced in each group over 12 months. There were no significant differences in PMR changes among the three groups in the primary analysis or analysis including total lesions. The changes in CTA parameters, including indexes for detecting high-risk features, also did not differ. Conclusion: The EPA/DHA therapy of 2 or 4 g/day did not significantly improve the high-risk features of coronary atherosclerotic plaques evaluated using CMR under statin therapy.

Aim: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level reduction is highly effective in preventing the occurrence of a cardiovascular event. Contrariwise, an inverse association exists between LDL-C levels and prognosis in some patients with cardiovascular diseases—the so-called “cholesterol paradox.” This study aimed to investigate whether the LDL-C level on admission affects the long-term prognosis in patients who develop acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to examine factors associated with poor prognosis in patients with low LDL-C levels. Methods: We enrolled 410 statin-naïve patients with ACS, whom we divided into low- and high-LDL-C groups based on an admission LDL-C cut-off (obtained from the Youden index) of 122 mg/dL. Endothelial function was assessed using the reactive hyperemia index 1 week after statin initiation. The primary composite endpoint included all-cause death, as well as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke occurrences. Results: During a median follow-up period of 6.1 years, 76 patients experienced the primary endpoint. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that patients in the low LDL-C group had a 2.3-fold higher risk of experiencing the primary endpoint than those in the high LDL-C group (hazard ratio, 2.34; 95% confidence interval, 1.29-4.27; p=0.005). In the low LDL-C group, slow gait speed (frailty), elevated chronic-phase high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (chronic inflammation), and endothelial dysfunction were significantly associated with the primary endpoint. Conclusions: Patients with low LDL-C levels at admission due to ACS had a significantly worse long-term prognosis than those with high LDL-C levels; frailty, chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction were poor prognostic factors.

Ketone bodies, consisting of beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone, are metabolic byproducts known as energy substrates during fasting. Recent advancements have shed light on the multifaceted effects of ketone body metabolism, which led to increased interest in therapeutic interventions aimed at elevating ketone body levels. However, excessive elevation of ketone body concentration can lead to ketoacidosis, which may have fatal consequences. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to focus on the latest insights on ketone body metabolism, particularly emphasizing its association with mitochondria as the primary site of interaction. Given the distinct separation between ketone body synthesis and breakdown pathways, we provide an overview of each metabolic pathway. Additionally, we discuss the relevance of ketone bodies to conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, we explore the utilization of ketone body metabolism, including dietary interventions, in the context of aging, where mitochondrial dysfunction plays a crucial role. Through this review, we aim to present a comprehensive understanding of ketone body metabolism and its intricate relationship with mitochondrial function, spanning the potential implications in various health conditions and the aging process.
