This paper presents a methodology for analyzing individual differences on Kansei evaluation for a set of product samples. This analysis divides subjects into several groups by each subject's Kansei evaluation data, according to what kinds of Kansei are related on what kinds of design elements. The basic idea is to classify the results of cluster analysis on individual subject's ratings. A similarity matrix of subjects is computed by comparing dendrogram of each subject. The member subjects of a group have similar response patterns, and the subjects belong to different groups have different response patterns over all Kansei and design elements. ArboART, neural network based hierarchical clustering is used for individual clustering. The methodology is applied to analyzing evaluation data of milk carton design.

Many goods and services at late night have appeared in the market. Therefore, the objective of this study was to clarify the characteristics of daily activity at late night of young people who were active at late night.<BR>The method of this study was to survey the daily activity of female student from 10p.m. to 5a.m. the next day on weekdays and holidays. The main results were as follows.<BR>(1) The difference among samples had stronger influence on the obtained data than the difference within samples.<BR>(2) The time of activities at late night was longer in students than in whole Japanese. On the rate of samples who were astir at late night, holidays was twice rate of weekdays.<BR>(3) The correlation of between bedtime and each item of daily activities for a whole day was high in the items of the free time, low in the items of the bound time and half in the indispensable time. The correlation between weekdays and holidays was also found.<BR>(4) Activities at late night were classified to five factors. The characteristics of each factor depended on the types of communication's media, for example, telephone and communication.<BR>(5) The activities, which were mostly active in late night, were telephone, computer and rest. Contrary, the items of low rate of activity at late night were work and transportation.<BR>(6) The correlations among activities were found. The character of samples related to transportation were clarified. Their character was self-assertive and aggressive.

Many people have experienced that even long after their graduation, their school songs can still evoke nostalgia of their old school days. In this study, we proposed a psychological model of the generation mechanism underlying the school-song-evoked nostalgic feelings. Firstly, we extracted the terms characteristic of school songs from the lyrics of 156 Japanese school songs. Then, we investigated how the number of years that had elapsed since graduation influenced the degrees of school-song-evoked nostalgic feelings through questionnaires. Finally, we conducted an experiment in which the participants were asked to rate the “school-songness” of the lyrics of four existing school songs as well as an “average school song” which we made using the terms extracted at the first stage of the study. The results show that the “average school song” ranks highest, which implies the properness of our model.

Recognizing facial expressions and estimating their corresponding action units’ intensities have achieved many milestones. However, such estimating is still challenging due to subtle action units’ variations during emotional arousal. The latest approaches are confined to the probabilistic models’ characteristics that model action units’ relationships. Considering ordinal relationships across an emotional transition sequence, we propose two metric learning approaches with self-attention-based triplet and Siamese networks to estimate emotional intensities. Our emotion expert branches use shifted-window SWIN-transformer which restricts self-attention computation to adjacent windows while also allowing for cross-window connection. This offers flexible modeling at various scales of action units with high performance. We evaluated our network’s spatial and time-based feature localization on CK+, KDEF-dyn, AFEW, SAMM, and CASME-II datasets. They outperform deep learning state-of-the-art methods in micro-expression detection on the latter two datasets with 2.4% and 2.6% UAR respectively. Ablation studies highlight the strength of our design with a thorough analysis.

The relationship between expressions of a class teacher on the class atmosphere was investigated. First, the frequency a teacher showing six basic expressions was assessed. Secondly, the atmosphere of the class was evaluated and factors that composed class atmosphere were subjected to factor analysis, which indicated that class atmosphere consisted of Unity, Friendly, and strict Factors. A model how expressions of a teacher affected the atmosphere of a class was developed using Covariance Structures Analysis (CSA). The results indicated that the expressions of a teacher had a significant effect on class atmosphere.

The purpose of this study is to find effective design elements to make maps easy to use for people with poor directional ability. We conducted comparative experiments using 12 types of existing maps. 58 subjects tried to find their ways using several maps in large spaces such as shopping malls and stations with rather complex structures. After observing their behaviors, we conducted interviews to clarify supportive design elements of maps to find ways. As a result, we found some effective design elements such as vivid color tones, the right angle of bird's-eye-view, the right degree of deformation of illustrations, readable design from upside down position when maps are rotated, for example. We also found two important requirements of map design; (1) landmarks on maps should be easily collated with real landmarks, (2) relations between different stories of the building should be clearly described.

Robot-assisted therapy has gained attention as one of mental health measures. In this paper, we investigated the influences of soft tactility on psychological and physiological stress relief effects to verify whether soft robots or hard robots are effective as therapy robots. Resultantly, we confirmed that psychological stress relief effects obtained by interaction with soft robots are significantly higher than that with hard robots, particularly reducing tension and depression, improving vigor. And we also verified that physiological stress relief effects, especially increasing alpha waves, obtained by interaction with soft robots are significantly higher, too. In addition, we found that soft tactility may have effects of inhibiting reduction users' motivation for interaction. These results suggest that soft robots are more effective as therapy robots.

Humans have various impressions for visual stimulus such as order/disorder and aesthetic preference, but the brain characteristics that each impression reflects are not readily apparent. We hypothesized that perception of order/disorder reflects the stimulus processing fluency. We conducted one preliminary experiment and two main experiments. The preliminary experiment simultaneously presented two stimuli to participants, who judged which stimulus was the more disordered. We scored perception of order/disorder using participants' responses. The main experiments used a same-different judgment task to assess the hypothesis. We presented two stimuli simultaneously, scored with perception of order/disorder. Participants reported whether the stimuli were the same or not. Participants easily judged whether the two stimuli were the same or not when the same-difference task included the stimulus perceived as orderly. Results suggest that the impression of order/disorder reflects the processing fluency for each stimulus.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between humans and objects they treasure using the analogy of interpersonal relationships. Four hundred and eighteen undergraduates were asked to name objects they were especially fond of. They then rated the likeness or similarity of these things to themselves and others, and they specified the reason they liked the objects. The results showed that certain objects carried with them strong metaphors for the subjects' interpersonal relationships. The study also analyzed the relationship between these metaphors and the reasons given by the subjects for liking the objects named. Although this was an exploratory study, the analysis of the relationship between humans and the objects might be useful for the development of new products that people will treasure.

The objectives of this research are to implement the examination and the analysis of the utterances that accompany movements, and to elucidate whether these utterances are likely to be applied as movement-support technology. In the first phase of the field survey, we studied changes in the rate of vocal output with changes in the height of a platform to stand on; then, in the second phase of the survey, we investigated the influence exerted by vocal output or the absence thereof on walking ease and Maximum Walking Speed (MWS). In the analytical study, we observed excitation levels of spinal motor cells in healthy adults using H-wave. It is suggested by the results that (1) the rate of vocalization changes, (2) MWS is not improved, (3) the ease of walking is affected, and (4) the level of stimulation of spinal cord motor cells is increased.

The transparent communication board (TCB) is a communication tool that is commonly employed by individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Both the 50-letters and flick type TCB are prevalent in Japan. The purpose of this case study was to compare and investigate the speed of letter transmission and the subjective user impression associated with the use of the 50-letters and flick type TCB in ALS patients. The study included four ALS patients and four caregivers, who acted as communication partners. Participants used the 50-letters and flick type TCB at intervals ranging from one week to 90 days. They received video instructions on how to use each type of TCB and tried to transmit a total of 18 Japanese letters. We measured the time taken to transmit each word and the number of errors. Additionally, the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their subjective impressions of the TCB. Compared with the 50-letters type, the ALS patients and their partners tended to make fewer errors and preferred the flick type of TCB. However, the 50-letters type was easier to use to communicate if the patient and partner were not familiar with the flick type sequence. Our data suggest that the age of the patient and their partner, as well as the amount of experience using a smartphone, should be considered when choosing a TCB.

Humans are aware of their world due to sensory input and a variety of information from all five senses is integrated into the brain. Research on the mechanisms underlying sensory integration has been extensive; however, few studies have investigated information arising from three or more sensory inputs. The purpose of the present research is to clarify the importance of sensory integration of information arising from the visual, auditory, and tactile senses. Three experiments were conducted to determine the integration of visual images, sounds, and vibrations from a haptic mouse, to investigate the matching of a combination of multi-sensory information represented by digital information. A greater impact was seen for visual information than for auditory or tactile information when the three types of information were presented simultaneously. A difference was also noted for presentation time for visual, auditory, and tactile information.

The present study examined the effects of facial movements on impressions of facial appearance during dynamic smiling. The participants (80 women) rated the 68 women in the videos, posing with a smile, in terms of attractiveness, likability, and beauty on a 5-point scale. The displacements of the sides of both the cheeks and mouth areas in each video were measured using the optical flow method. Five time points were chosen from time series data that had been divided into four equal intervals. T-tests were applied to analyze the differences in displacements and velocities between the higher- and lower-rated-stimulus groups. The results indicate that the magnitudes of the initial displacements and the acceleration of the initial velocities were most important in creating a positive impression of dynamic smiles. The results also show that there are both common and specific relationships between facial movements and impressions of facial appearance.

Wooden panels that are made of glueing elements with various appearances, involve numerous visual combinations. Although craftspeople believe that homogeneous patterns are desirable, it is helpful to clarify the acceptability of heterogeneous patterns from the perspective of sustainability. This study classified individuals based on their evaluation tendencies and examined their preferences. We performed a subjective evaluation of 17 sample images of 109 participants using an online survey. Consequently, it was found that patterns evaluated as “even” are generally more preferred. However, the classified clusters showed differences in their evaluation tendencies. For instance, the general consumer group confirmed only “heterogeneity” and the expert group felt “naturalness” from all samples. Additionally, there was a cluster that might have derived additional value from more homogeneous patterns. We conclude that an even appearance is desired, and additional information illustrating the characters of the wooden panel is needed to release unique patterns.

Various findings on color impression have become essential knowledge for professionals who handle colors as elements of design. Similarly, knowledge of memorized colors should be considered by design professionals. Researchers in color psychology have conducted various studies on memorized colors; however, a database on changing of colors cannot be built, because the investigated colors are limited to parts in the color space. In this paper, we propose an experimental method to reveal memorized colors. The apparatus consists of a personal computer and LCD display. The proposed method uses quantitative data on three attributes of memorized colors, and the manipulation of the apparatus is easier than the conventional method. We compare the study results with the findings of previous research papers. The results confirm the validity of the method. This study presents memorized colors of rarely investigated parts in the color space.

The purpose of this research is to clarify the relationship between the female body type and posture and the aesthetic impression it creates. We divided the BMI into 5 levels, body types into 3 levels, and posture into 6 types, making 40 types of sample images created using a 3D body scanner. Questionnaires were conducted with 157 adult women using the SD method. As a result of the principal component analysis, the first principal component axis shows “beauty” and the second shows “plumpness”. From the scatter plot, regarding posture, the weak upright type had the lowest score for beauty. The balanced upright type was considered to be beautiful. The stage of BMI shows plumpness, and when the level of sharpness is low, the level of beauty also tends to be low. The impression of the form of women showed that the elements of posture are strongly related to beauty.

We have confirmed the fact that the sound quality of copied digital signal is, in some cases, better than the sound quality of the original CD”, then we have considered the concerned factors and characteristics to improve the sound quality. Since no sound quality measurement tool exist, discovered two objective key perceptual assessment phrases of losing “floating atmosphere in the air-like resonance” and losing “chest penetrating impression” (Appendix 1) are used for the evaluation of the sound quality. The improvement of sound quality is up to +3 in the 7-grade comparison scale.

Modern life overflows with the maturity of industrialized society. The ideal way of the consumer who makes [Yarikuri] is long lost. Now the theme of ecology is important. It is thought that we should review the lost custom, and improve the way we consume. Kimono, if it is seen from the point of “Let us not waste! [Mottainai] value”, has an excellent characteristic in recycling and reuse. The system that uses it well exists. Kimono returns to one cloth when the seams are removed. It was a merchant named Shikkai to have handled the system. The industrialization society put it at maturity then, I researched who Shikkai are in what situation and what role he plays. As a result, it is exposed to the crisis of the disappearance with the decline of the kimono culture though Shikkai has undergone a transfiguration with the transition of economy and industry of our country after the war. However, the idea and aspect of “Let us not waste! [Mottainai] value” run to the basic concept [Kurimawashi] of Shikkai, and peeling off and using the original value of kimono. In addition, it is thought that it is necessary to study the behavior patterns of the coordination of collecting knowledge over many topics and using it.

To create innovative ideas, it is important for designers to monitor thought patterns by reflecting upon their thought structure and then control thought. In this study, we visualized the inference process, which includes deduction, induction, and abduction, as well as the associative process. Subsequently, by connecting them radially along the flow of thought, we employed a method of visualizing the inference process of designers on a two-dimensional plane. We conducted an experiment to visualize a part of the thought of designer using the “inference mapping method.” Consequently, we found out that different cognitive biases occurred in designers' deductive, inductive, abductive, and associative thinking processes. From the technical viewpoint of cognitive science, we studied the phenomena and clarified the structure of bias in each thought process. Finally, we proposed a way to visualize cognitive biases and to consciously eliminate them when designers engage in the creative process.

Oshibori is a small wet towel to wipe hands before meal in Japan. Most of researches on oshibori have investigated the towels from the perspective of cleaning and sanitation. Few studies have assessed the qualitative and sensory characteristics associated with oshibori. In this paper, subjective evaluation experiments were carried out using cotton oshibori of different temperatures such as 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 °C in the laboratory temperature at 20, 25 and 30 °C over four seasons. 29 males and 33 females evaluated oshibori on following properties such as “favorite,” “rare,” “hot,” “feel-smooth,” “high-grade,” “comfortable,” “soft,” and “moist,” according to five point grading. As results, the oshibori at the temperature of 5, 15, 45 and 60 °C were evaluated to be comfortable. Contrary, those of 30 and 75 °C were evaluated uncomfortable. Moreover, sexual specificity of the evaluation was observed.
