This study is to clarify the factor of "Kansei" in operation of human interface systems. "Kansei" includes conscious aspect and unconscious aspect. Physiological responses are necessary to evaluate unconscious aspect. In this paper, "<I>sakusaku</I>" feeling at car navigation operation is measured. Relationship between subjective evaluation and, Electrocardiograph measurement and Near Infra- Red Spectroscopy measurement is investigated. Experimental data shows that physiological responses are effective to evaluate unconscious aspect.

Colic crying, which is a baby's abnormal crying induced by unknown causes, is a typical example of sounds giving unpleasant impressions to listeners. Recently, Mukai <I>et al.</I> suggested that the colic crying would cause the child abuse because of its unpleasantness. In this paper, we propose the extended pitch perturbation quotient (ePPQ) for the evaluation of unpleasantness of crying. It is shown that the ePPQ is an index to quantify instability of fundamental periods, which seems to be cause of unpleasantness of colic crying. The ePPQ for colic crying is significantly higher than that for crying cured by operation. Furthermore, as a result of subjective evaluations, it seems that there is a tendency for the scale of unpleasantness to be high when the ePPQ is high. Therefore, it is considered that the ePPQ is a useful index for evaluating unpleasantness for crying.

The purpose of this research is to estimate quantitatively by using jump motion as a base material as the basic research about the effect the difference in the linguistics movement instructions on a performance. The effect of five instructions (“A: big jump.”, “B: jump after deeply bended knees.”, “C: highly jump.”, “D: maximum jump.”, “E: jump to touch the ceiling.”) on jump height was analyzed using KINECT. Result, the height of jump was E > D > C> B > A. In order to create high jump, it was found the instruction such as E, with the target point in the external of body was useful. In addition, as attention focused on the part instructed as the effect of the instruction focusing on the explicit of body part like B, it was suggested the attentiveness to other parts and the timing of the operation may be delayed. Instructions like D didn't lead to a high jump because the image of movement was ambiguous.

In the present study, the subjective evaluation experiment for abstract 3D shapes was conducted as the first step of construction of a system that allows non-design-professional users to design 3D shapes via subjective evaluation words intuitively. In particular, the structure of the subjective evaluation for 3D shapes and the reliability of the evaluation by non-design-professionals were examined. The results showed three-factor solution in which “Uniformity,” “Activity” and “Potency” factors were important evaluative standards in the subjective evaluation for 3D shapes. These factors are similar to Osgood's three factors, which were frequently reported factors in previous semantic differential studies. Furthermore, the subjective evaluations by non-design-professionals were generally consistent, which means that, with respect to the subjective evaluation, non-design-professionals without high level of design skills can evaluate 3D shapes in a reliable way.

The present study analyzed YouTube sustainable design communities (with an emphasis on Academia) in English and Spanish through webometric methods. Findings included differences between the networks in terms of speakers and popular videos. Network centralities revealed that English videos form a community with multiple interconnections between universities and other stakeholders, while Spanish videos are mostly small groups and isolated nodes. Despite being well connected, videos related to universities were less popular than videos unrelated to universities. Nevertheless, videos related to students were key in spreading sustainable design content in both networks. The findings also suggest some factors that may be playing in favor of English based content.

We have been developing training systems using engineering technologies including voice processing, image processing, and electromyogram measurements, among others, for people with communication difficulties including those with developmental disorders. These training systems are designed to improve their communication skills, and they included voice training for improving the clarity of the voice and emotional expressions, and training in making facial expressions for expressing emotions, among others. Facial expressions play an important role in smooth communication by conveying one's intentions. Moreover, it is necessary to have the skills of synchronizing one's facial expressions with that of others especially when feeling empathy for another person. Skills of synchronizing facial expressions include skills of recognizing others' facial expressions and those of creating one's own facial expressions. We have conducted investigations based on the perspective that when conducting training related to facial expression synchronization it is important to examine abilities for both recognizing and creating facial expressions. This paper describes indices of facial expression synchronization skills developed by us. In an experiment conducted by Otte et al., happy and angry faces were shown to participants as stimuli and they were required to respond with happy or angry faces respectively. It was indicated that the response time differed depending on combinations of facial expressions used in the stimulus and the response. We assessed the response time to an expressionless face as the baseline response time. Then, we defined the effect of generating shorter response times than the baseline when stimulus and response facial expressions were consistent, as a promoting effect, and the effect of generating longer response times when stimulus and response facial expressions were inconsistent, as an inhibitory effect. Furthermore, the time differences from the baseline were defined as indices of the degree of promotion and the degree of inhibition. The results of investigating promoting and inhibitory effects are reported.

The study aimed to examine the physiological and psychological effects of a recently manufactured relaxation chair in healthy adults. This study performed a randomized crossover-controlled trial. I compared two chairs, the relaxation chair and a normal chair as the control condition. Twenty young male adults participated in this study. Results showed that immunoglobulin A, an indicator of anti-stress activity, increased significantly after sitting on the relaxation chair (P<0.05), although the CgA was not significantly different among the four conditions of both chairs. Additionally, each Profile of Mood States score of Anger-Hostility, Confusion-Bewilderment, Tension-Anxiety, and the Total Mood Disturbance subscales decreased significantly, showing the greatest decrease after participants sat on the relaxation chair (P<0.05). Furthermore, the visual analogue scale score for comfort increased significantly after sitting on the relaxation chair, compared to the other three conditions, respectively (P<0.05). Moreover, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the state anxiety scores significantly decreased after sitting on the relaxation chair (P<0.05) among the four conditions, and the trait anxiety scores significantly decreased after sitting on the relaxation chair, related to each pre-condition of both chairs (P<0.05). These results indicate that sitting on the relaxation chair can temporarily alleviate physical and psychological stress in healthy adults.

Electronic display devices such as iPad and Kindle have recently attracted considerable attention as, reading media. Although the display performance and, business model concerning the contents have been discussed, there has been little discussion on comfortability, and - kansei like readability. In this paper, we conducted task performance investigation and impression evaluation among electrophoretic displays, liquid crystal displays and paper in order to examine readability for electronic displays, especially electrophoretic displays. In the task performance investigation, the reading speed, error detection rate and comprehension were measured. In the impression evaluation, the impression of the display, reading media and sense of fatigue were examined. As a result of task investigation, it was shown that the electrophoretic display was more comprehensible than that of the liquid crystal display. In the impression evaluation, the following results were obtained; 1) Although the display properties for the electrophoretic display almost passed muster, there was room for improvement in the beauty of the display. 2) The electrophoretic display was easier to read and concentrate on than the liquid crystal display. 3) The electrophoretic display was less likely to cause eyestrain and stiff-neck than other media. Principal component analysis revealed that the synthetic readability for the electrophoretic display was superior to the liquid crystal display, and moreover, the novelty of the electrophoretic display was superior to that of the other media.

In this study, we propose a new method to investigate the perceptual-motor coordination during first person shooter (FPS) game play and the effect of FPS game experience on it. In an experiment, participants played the FPS game in which horizontally inverted images (inverted condition) or normal images (control condition) were presented. Repeatedly playing the FPS game in the inverted condition increased the game performance (e.g., game score), and in six trials, the performance reached plateau at the same level as that in the control condition. The analyses based on the FPS game experience showed that FPS players were able to learn new perceptual-motor coordination more quickly than non-FPS players. These results not only suggest that the method proposed is useful to investigate perceptual-motor coordination in FPS players, but also support the recent view that the advantage for videogame players is more evident with realistic stimuli and tasks than simplistic ones.

Remote work has spread rapidly since the pandemic of COVID-19, making it more convenient to work from home for a large number of people. However, excessive work concentration can lead to serious health damage such as mental stress if not monitored. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based scheme aimed at identifying the different stress levels caused by concentration while working on a PC. We perform a set of experimental tests designed to provoke different levels of stress, namely low, medium, high, and no stress. Dedicated wearable devices are used to collect Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Galvanic Skin Reaction (GSR), and Breath Chest Force (BCF) to train and test a CNN-based stress classifier. The result shows the ability of the proposed CNN model to correctly classify stress levels achieving an accuracy of 99.08%.

In this paper, the author discusses a theme of “Thetical and Antithetical Business Management.” The thetical business management signifies “a management style minimizes an objective function, which expresses consumers' expenditure of service goods, with holding a constraint condition, which expresses guaranteed level of expenditure.”While the antithetical business management is “a management style maximize an objective function, which expresses consumers' satisfaction concerning service goods, with holding a constraint condition, which expresses limits of their service goods expenditure.”In other words, the thetical business management can be formulated as a Primal Problem of Linear Programming, whereas the antithetical business management as its Dual Problem of Linear Programming.

The concept of entropy which was introduced by Clausius in 1850 as a thermodynamic property has been extended to the economics theory, information theory, and others. Even though “entropy” is used in many fields of science, it is not easy to understand the concept of entropy, as well as describing it by words/terms. In this paper, we investigated an appropriate way of representing the concept of entropy by words. At first, we surveyed the commonly used words in describing the concept of entropy. We pointed out the problem that the language expression does not accurately represent the entire concept of entropy. Secondly we examined the correlation between the thermodynamic entropy calculated from the particle animations simulating the molecular motion and the psychological quantity obtained by showing those animations to participants. As a result, we found that the representation of the word “degree of diffusion” has relatively good correlation with the entropy value.

In recent years, coaching has been utilized in various fields. Much practical research on coaching has employed observable indicators, such as scores in sports, to demonstrate coaching effectiveness. However, career coaching does not have such observable indicators. The authors consider the client's generation of internal values to be an important factor in career coaching. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze unobservable internal value creation in the career coaching process, and to clearly assess coaching effectiveness in this light. The results revealed two types of coaching pattern which elicited client value judgments: one which enhanced existing client values, and one which provided new variables. In addition, we found that the career coaching process had two phases, in which understanding and then consent are enhanced. The study suggested the importance of the coaching process in general, and of the generation of internal values therein.

The seasoning action is greatly influenced by the memory of taste. In the present research the experiment that the cook with a different experience expresses the memory of taste is done. The relation between the seasoning action and the activity of working memory is compared with the different cooking experience, and the effect of the memory of taste on the seasoning action is discussed. NIRS is used for the measurement of the activity. As a result, the cook who has the strong memory of taste performs the feed-forward action to reduce the difference between the memory and the cooked taste, there is a probability of the product development that bases cooked characteristic.

In this paper, we carried out a subjective evaluation on the perceptual difference in female speech to show the gender difference in its likability and analyzed a relationship between the acoustic features and subjective scores. This subjective evaluation used female speech uttered by 21 speakers as the stimuli, and 127 subjects (47 males and 80 females) attended it. The results suggested that there was the speech preferred without the gender difference and preferred by one gender. We then analyzed the correlation between subjective scores and five acoustic features: fundamental frequency, formant frequency, amplitude difference, spectral centroid and spectral tilt. In female subjects, statistically significant correlations were observed in all features. In male subjects, significant correlation was observed only in spectral tilt. In particular, correlation in spectral tilt showed the inverse trend between male and female subjects. These results suggest that the spectral tilt is effective in the gender difference.

In this study, by proposing a model with a hierarchical relationship, we reconsidered the methodology utilizing the semantic differential technique. The proposed approach divided the subjective evaluation into the evaluative aspect and descriptive aspect, and identified the former as the upper layer expressing the level of value and the latter as a lower layer expressing the level of semantics. The subjective evaluation data was obtained in evaluation experiments measuring the value and semantics for the three-dimensional objects. Based on the obtained data, the proposed model was examined to see whether it can reflect individual differences and the influences of evaluation contexts that have been conventionally been treated as errors. Results showed that the proposed model expressed the influence of context and individual differences and suggested the need for a hierarchical approach beyond the framework of the semantic differential method, such as the conventional EPA structure.

This paper describes a system which composes operetta songs fitting to story scenes represented by texts and/or pictures. Inputs to the system are original theme music, numerical information on given story scenes and story texts. The system composes variations on theme music and lyrics according to image of music and lyrics obtained from numerical information on given story scenes. Evolutionary computation is applied to generations of variations and lyrics. Using a vocal synthesizer and a general midi synthesizer, the system plays operetta songs as the variations on theme music with the lyrics. The system reflects user's Kansei to variations on theme music and lyrics using interactive evolutionary computation. This paper also describes the evaluation experiments to confirm whether the composed songs reflect impressions of story scenes appropriately or not.

The purpose of this study is to find effective design elements to make maps easy to use for people with poor directional ability. We conducted comparative experiments using 12 types of existing maps. 58 subjects tried to find their ways using several maps in large spaces such as shopping malls and stations with rather complex structures. After observing their behaviors, we conducted interviews to clarify supportive design elements of maps to find ways. As a result, we found some effective design elements such as vivid color tones, the right angle of bird's-eye-view, the right degree of deformation of illustrations, readable design from upside down position when maps are rotated, for example. We also found two important requirements of map design; (1) landmarks on maps should be easily collated with real landmarks, (2) relations between different stories of the building should be clearly described.

A psychoacoustical experiment was conducted to examine the basic characteristics of auditory presence as the first step to obtain a full understanding of the multi-modal sensation of presence. Twenty-three sounds were binaurally recorded using a dummy head and reproduced to four subjects by headphones. The experiment was carried out using Scheffé's paired comparison method modified by Ura using a scale of five categories. Analysis of variance revealed that the auditory presence as the main effect was highly significant. As a result of scaling, the sounds of moving sound sources were evaluated as having a higher presence than the sounds of stationary sound sources. As for the latter, sounds with larger sound images were rated as having a relatively higher presence. The effects other than the main effect and the interactions between them, however, were also significant. In the interactions, the individual differences for the main effect tended to be explained as the difference in weights of the subjects on the psychological factors involved in the auditory presence.

High-frequency waves, such as edges, and local distributions of intensity signal are important in the sense of material and textures. Color filter arrays, popularly adopted in digital cameras, capture only one of the R, G, or B values for each pixel. To capture full color data for each pixel, we have to interpolate the values from neighboring pixels. In this process, high-frequency waves, such as edges, may be lost in rough sampling and interpolation of color values. This paper proposes our new idea in interpolation of color values by probabilistically estimating 2D edge structure in high-frequent part to keep the original sense of material. Our basic idea is based on restoration of continuous digital line patterns, which corresponds to edge models. This paper also shows our experimental results and the performance comparing with the original full color image and the conventional method such as Hamilton method.
