Noise-robust Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is essential for robots which are expected to communicate with human in a daily environment. In such an environment, Voice Activity Detection (VAD) performance becomes poor, and ASR performance deteriorates due to noises and VAD failures. To cope with these problems, it is said that humans improve speech recognition performance by using visual information like lip reading. Thus, we propose two-layered audio-visual integration framework for VAD and ASR. The two-layered AV integration framework includes three crucial methods. The first is Audio-Visual Voice Activity Detection (AV-VAD) based on Bayesian network. The second is a new lip-related visual feature which is robust for visual noises. The last one is microphone array processing to improve Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of input signal. We implemented prototype audio-visual speech recognition system based on our proposed framework using HARK which is our robot audition system. Through voice activity detection and speech recognition experiments, we showed the effectiveness of Audio-Visual integration, microphone array processing, and their combination for VAD and ASR. Preliminary results show that our system improves 20 and 9.7 points of ASR results with/without microphone array processing, respectively, and also improves robustness against several auditory/visual noise conditions.

In the present study we attempt to induce a quadruped robot to walk dynamically on irregular terrain and run on flat terrain by using a neural system model. For dynamic walking on irregular terrain, we employ a control system involving a neural oscillator network, a stretch reflex and a flexor reflex. Stable dynamic walking when obstructions to swinging legs are present is made possible by the flexor reflex and the crossed stretch reflex. A modification of the single driving input to the neural oscillator network makes it possible for the robot to walk up a step. For running on flat terrain, we combine a spring mechanism and the neural oscillator network. It became clear in this study that the matching of two oscillations by springs and the neural oscillator network is important in enabling the robot to hopping. The present study also shows that entrainment between neural oscillators causes the running gait to change from hopping to bouncing. This finding renders running fairly easy to attain in a bounce gait. It must be noticed that the flexible and robust dynamic walking on irregular terrain and the transition of the running gait are realized by the modification of a few parameters in the neural oscillator network. This finding, obtained through experiments using the quadruped called Patrush, shows the potential ability of a neural oscillator network to facilitate adaptation in dynamic walking and running.

A coordinated control method for two mobile robots without explicit communication is presented in this paper. Concretely, transferring control by cooperation of two robots is realized from the viewpoints of mechanical design and of control system design. In the mechanical design, compliance mechanism with 3 degrees of freedom is added on one of the robots in order to avoid extreme inner forces between the robots. In the control system design, leader-follower method is adopted. "Virtual Impedance Method" is used for controlling the follower robot. A deadlock problem, where a robot stops at some other positions from a target position of the robot, is solved by transforming lateral virtual forces to virtual moments. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experimental results. The proposed method is applicable to multiple mobile robot system by increasing the number of followers.

A video-rate stereo machine has been developed at Carnegie Mellon University with the capability of generating a dense range map, aligned with an intensity image, at the video rate. The target performance of the CMU videorate stereo machine is: 1) multi image input of 6 cameras; 2) high throughput of 30 million point×disparity measurment per second; 3) high frame rate of 30 [frame/sec] ; 4) a dense depth map of 240×256; 5) disparity search range of up to 60 [pixel] ; 6) high precision of up to 8 [bits] (with interpolation) ; 7) uncertainty estimation available for each pixel. The stereo machine is based on a multi-baseline stereo method. The basic theory requires some extensions to allow for parallel, low-cost, high-speed machine implementation. The three major ones are: 1) the use of small integers for image data representation: 2) the use of absolute values instead of squares in the SSD computation (SAD instead of SSD) ; and 3) camera geometry compensation capability for precise camera alignment. The stereo machine successfully generates disparity map of 200×200 with 23 steps of disparity search range in the video rate.

This paper proposes a novel pattern classification method of user's motions to use as input signals for human-machine interfaces from electromyograms (EMGs) based on a muscle synergy theory. This method can represent combined motions (e.g. wrist flexion during hand grasping), which are not trained by a recurrent neural network in advance, by combinations of synergy patterns of EMG signals preprocessed by the network. With this method, since the combined motions (i.e. unlearned motions) can be classified through learning of single motions (such as hand grasping and wrist flexion) only, the number of motions could be increased without increasing of the number of learning samples and the learning times for controlling of the machines such as a prosthetic hand. Effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the motion classification experiments and prosthetic hand control experiments. The results showed that 18 motions, which are 12 combined and 6 single ones, can be classified sufficiently through learning of 6 single motions only (average rate: 89.2 ± 6.33%), and the amputee could control of a prosthetic hand using single and combined motions at will.

This paper reports about an interactive humanoid robots, Robovie, that work in a science museum where visitors are supposed to study and grow interests toward science. Each visitor wore an RFID tag, and looked around exhibits in the museum. Robovie has an implemented function for an autonomous interaction as free-play [1] . Moreover, it obtains its exact position, visitors' positions, and their moving history in the museum from ubiquitous sensor networks, including RFID tag readers, recording cameras and infrared cameras. It performs exhibits-guiding by moving around to several exhibits and explaining these exhibits based on the sensor information, in addition to the freeplay interaction. We compared the effect of the exhibits-guiding and the free-play interaction under three operating conditions. As a result, the free-play interaction and exhibits-guiding contributed to promote visitors' interests for science, while Robovie mostly received higher subjective impression, which is probably due to its novelty.

We discuss some suitable stability margin concepts for walking robots which are expected to walk around on irregular terrains. Several stability margin ideas have been proposed before, but those can be roughly divided into three kinds.We came to the conclusion that a stability margin concept based on energy considerations is the most practical to adopt and that its validity could be recognized through simple experiments. But the existing energy stability margin is inadequate for practical use because this margin varies with the weight of the robot which can't affect its resistance to tumbling caused by slipping from steps or the sudden stop. Therefore, we'll propose an improved one here, called the normalized energy stability margin, the NE stability margin for short. Considering this margin, we'll introduce a novel tool called the SNE contour which connects the points on the slope which have the same NE stability margin, so as to derive a stable gait for walking robots. In the final part of this paper, we focus on the features of the SNE contour which shed new light on the solution for the stable posture.

本論文では, 複数のロボットマニピュレータまたは多指ロボットハンドによる協調的あやつりの力学が議論される.協調的あやつりの問題は2つの局面に分けられる.1つは複数のロボット機構による合力を決定することであり, もう1つはそれらの間の内力を決定することである.合力は外力や環境拘束を受ける物体のあやつりに用いられる.内力は最大静止摩擦係数の不確さや変動に適応するために用いられる.合力の決定に対して動的協調制御方式が提案される.また, 最大静止摩擦の拘束の下で対象物に任意な加速度を発生する能力である協調的あやつり可能性を確認するための1方法が提案される.最後に, 最適内力を最大静止摩擦の拘束を満たすために必要な最小ノルムの内力と定義し, 最適解を求めるために非線形計画法が適用される.最適解は, それが存在する限り, 最大〓組の代数方程式を解くことによって必ず求められる.

Robot audition is a critical technology in creating an intelligent robot operating in daily environments. To realize such a robot audition system, we have designed a missing feature theory based interface between sound source separation and automatic speech recognition (ASR) . In this interface, features distorted by speech separation are detected from input speech as missing features. The detected missing features are masked on recognition to avoid severe deterioration of recognition performance. By using the interface, we developed the robot audition system which recognizes multiple simultaneous speech. We also assess its general applicability by implementing it on three different humanoids, i.e., Honda ASIMO, SIG2, and Replie of Kyoto University. By using three simultaneous speeches as benchmarks, its general applicability was confirmed. When triphone is used and a size of vocabulary is 200 words, the average word correct of three simultaneous speech are 79.7%, 78.7%, and 82.7% for ASIMO, SIG2, and Replie, respectively.

Here we will discuss the Self-organization of autonomous embodied motion [5]. Despite being a major characteristic of living systems, Self-movement has never been viewed seriously as a central element of living systems. In fact, most current research focuses on 'structure' rather than 'movement'. The theory of autopoiesis [35] also does not examine biological movement directly. However, Self-movement often appears as a central theme in robotics research, its self-organization has scarcely been studied. Self-organization of Self-motion is important, because We need to understand the natural intelligence of living systems, opposed to artificial intelligence, its diversity and its root in evolution. As a means for approaching these challenges in robotics research, we designed a simple chemical system that synthesizes embodied autonomous motion: a self-moving oil droplet. This chemical system provides a new example of self-movement besides biological systems and mechanical robots.

This paper proposes the concept of R-GIS, which is a geographic information system (GIS) for providing robots with environmental information. A GIS is capturing, storing, managing and presenting geographic information, and is used for various applications such as urban planning, agriculture, emergency response. In order to use a GIS for with robots, R-GIS is designed from two viewpoints. The first one is how to manage and present environmental information for robot planning. The second one is how to capture and store environmental information sensed by robots and sensors in the environment. In addition, we briefly show the system configuration of R-GIS, trends around GIS in Japan and an experimental field for R-GIS.

We developed an two-wheeled insect-sized robot to evaluate odor source localization algorithms of the male silkmoth (<i>Bombyx mori</i>). For fast and stable acquisition of sensory information, we used atmospheric ions and ion sensors to simulate odorant catch by insect olfactory sensors. The robot has two ion sensors, and a microcomputer for processing the sensor output, motor control and communication with external devices. To minimize its size, we used two modified servomotors as actuators, which enabled the robot to move in the same manner as a walking silkmoth. We used wheel encoders for feedback control of wheel position. The encoder output can also be used as a simulation of optic flow, which is necessary for speed and turn control in insect locomotion. By employing the robot, we evaluated the performance of two odor source localization models: one is based on the fixed programmed behavior of the silkmoth and a second model additionally includes course control dependent on the amplitude difference of ion sensor output on opposite sides of the robot. The results indicate that the robot based on the latter model was superior in ion plume tracking. Further evaluations of algorithms using our insect-sized robot will be an important tool for understanding behavioral mechanisms of orientation and applying them to robotics.
