Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a type C retrovirus infecting bovine B cells and causing enzootic bovine leukosis. Since it takes long periods to develop the disease, it is believed that BLV and host immune responses are closely related. In this review, the accumulated data showing close relationship between BLV and host immune responses are summarized in 4 sections. First, we discuss the role of cell-mediated immunity in protecting hosts from BLV infection. Second, several reports showing the relationship between the disease progression and the change of cytokine profiles are summarized. In the third section, we have focused on tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and its two types of receptors, and the possible involvement of TNF α in the BLV-induced leukemogenesis is discussed. The expression of TNF α has been shown to be regulated by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) haplotype. The resistance to BLV infection is supposed to be established by some innate factors, which are closely related to MHC haplotype. Finally, we propose that a breeding strategy based on the MHC haplotype could be a good approach to control BLV infection. This review includes some recent data from us and other groups.

Increased opposition from environmental groups is severely restricting the operation and planning of large-scale surface mines in the world. Some projects of surface mining will have to be cancelled and downsized due to environmental issues. Under this social situation, the mining industry has started the campaign and the public relations for the importance of extracting and using coal resources in order to mitigate the protection. It has been recognized throughout the industry that planning is essential to minimize the effects of mining on the environment. Environmental management and rehabilitation are now integral parts of planning for mining.Mines have a finite life that ceases when the mineral has been fully extracted. During the life of mine, mining, especially surface mining, has the potential to have environmental effects that extend beyond the confines of the mine boundary. These include erosion with increases in sedimentation and turbidity in surrounding water courses and leaching of salts that also result in the reduction of water quality. These effects may range from minimal to quite severe and widespread, depending upon the physical and chemical properties of the overburden and reject materials, the climate and location of the mine, and its relationships with surrounding land uses. Rehabilitation of mines is aimed towards the projected future land-use of the area.This paper describes surface mining systems in Australia and then discusses the factors that should be considered in order to avoid potential environmental issues resulting from surface mining when developing a new surface mine.

This paper describes the physiological functions of ku-ding-cha, a traditional bitter tea beverage that has been consumed in South China for a long time. Ku-ding-cha made from species in the genus Ilex, Aquifoliaceae and the genus Ligustrum, Oleaceae have been used in China as a diuretic and remedy for sore throat, weight loss and hypertension. Recent studies have demonstrated that triterpenes and triterpenoid glycosides in ku-ding-cha from the genus Ilex exhibit anti-arteriosclerosis, anti-obesity, anti-allergy and anti-cancer effects, and that phenylpropanoid glycosyl esters of phenylethanoid glycosides in ku-ding-cha from the genus Ligustrum exhibit anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, hepato-protective and anti-proliferative activities. Similar effects to those described above of the phenylethanoid glycosides and tea catechins are expected from ku-ding-cha of the genus Ilex, which contains a large amount of chlorogenic acids. We also demonstrated that ku-ding-cha has the ability to capture allyl mercaptan and allyl methyl sulfide in vivo. In conclusion, further investigations are necessary to more effectively use ku-ding-cha for maintaining our health.

本記事では,情報の爆発的増大とヨーロッパにおける情報産業の出現を概略し,次にP-D-R(Pharma Documentation Ring)企業グループの活動を説明する中で製薬業界の情報・ナレッジマネジメントに関する昨今のトピックを深く掘り下げる。P-D-Rは,この分野における経験の交流・共有に取り組む法人組織であり,多国籍製薬企業トップ20社がそのメンバーの多数を占める。P-D-Rは,高水準の商業情報と関連サービスを追求する力強い団体であり,新規に更なる商業情報,およびサービスの導入も奨める。この目的のために,P-D-Rは保健分野の国際的情報産業にたずさわる諸機関と密着な関係を維持している。本記事では,P-D-Rの最近の活動の主な内容を述べ,それがヨーロッパおよびその他の地域の科学情報分野にどのようなインパクトを及ぼしているか,紹介する。
