In infected cells, the chromatin structure of the adenovirus genome DNA plays critical roles in its genome functions. Previously, we reported that in early phases of infection, incoming viral DNA is associated with both viral core protein VII and cellular histones. Here we show that in late phases of infection, newly synthesized viral DNA is also associated with histones. We also found that the knockdown of CAF-1, a histone chaperone that functions in the replication-coupled deposition of histones, does not affect the level of histone H3 bound on viral chromatin, although CAF-1 is accumulated at viral DNA replication foci together with PCNA. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays using epitope-tagged histone H3 demonstrated that histone variant H3.3, which is deposited onto the cellular genome in a replication-independent manner, is selectively associated with both incoming and newly synthesized viral DNAs. Microscopic analyses indicated that histones but not USF1, a transcription factor that regulates viral late gene expression, are excluded from viral DNA replication foci and that this is achieved by the oligomerization of the DNA binding protein (DBP). Taken together, these results suggest that histone deposition onto newly synthesized viral DNA is most likely uncoupled with viral DNA replication, and a possible role of DBP oligomerization in this replication-uncoupled histone deposition is discussed.

We demonstrate a method to measure Raman optical activity (ROA) by using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectral interferometry. An extremely weak chirality-induced CARS field is amplified through the interference with a strong CARS field generated from an external reference and is extracted by the Fourier transformation. In this interferometric coherent Raman optical activity (iCROA), both the sign and the magnitude of optical active non-resonant background susceptibility can be directly determined. Measurement of a CARS-ROA spectrum with less artifact is obtained because a broad offset artifact due to optical rotatory dispersion is clearly distinguished in iCROA.

To clarify how patients with depression perceived their living difficulties, two case studies were performed: of patients with depression with and without Typus melancholicus. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in accordance with an interview guide, and data were analyzed using the KJ method. Data from the interviews of the patient with depression with Typus melancholicus could be summarized under the title "Perception of Living Difficulties in Patients with Depression: the Process of Resolving Distress." The interview data from the patient with depression without Typus melancholicus could be summarized under the title "The Self-contained Cycle of All or Nothing and a Hint on How to Get out of it." In each case study, patients expressed either of the following: "I am consumed by my own thoughts and what I consider to be 'depression,' and can't shake off the sense of tiredness" (Fatigue) or "Because I think it has to be all or nothing, I drown myself in a 'worthless me' attitude and get depressed because I think I can't do anything" (Quicksand). A common factor between them was "I am caught up in my own thoughts and thus feel bad." The findings suggested that patients with depression perceive their living difficulties in this way.

Comparison was made between the series and the parallel connection of dialyzers in simultaneous hemodialysis of two patients with the dialysate supplier for single patient. 1) In the series connection, the top dialyzer showed the greater dialysis effect than the lower one, but the water deprivation effect was reverse. In the parallel connection, both dialyzers showed the equivalent work and the greater dialysis and water deprivation effect than either of the series dialyzers. 2) In the series connection, the patient of the lower dialyzer often complained chill due to lowering of the dialysate temperature. The parallel connection gave solution to this problem as well as to the psychological problem involved in the series connection. 3) In case of accident in the parallel connection, the dialyzer can be easily separated and the other dialyzer can continue dialysis without being disturbed.

This study examines the effects of the inclusion of the co-benefits on the potential installed capacity of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects with a linear programming model by the clean development mechanism (CDM) in India's power sector. It is investigated how different marginal damage costs of air pollutants affect the potential installed capacity of CCS projects in the CDM with a scenario analysis. Three results are found from this analysis. First, large quantity of IGCC with CCS becomes realizable when the certified emission reduction (CER) prices are above US$56/tCO2 in the integrated Northern, Eastern, Western, and North-Eastern regional grids (NEWNE) and above US $49/tCO2 in the Southern grid. Second, including co-benefits contributes to decrease CO2 emissions and air pollutants with introduction of IGCC with CCS in the CDM at lower CER prices. Third, the effects of the co-benefits are limited in the case of CCS because CCS reduces larger amount of CO2 emissions than that of air pollutants. Total marginal damage costs of air pollutants of US$250/t and US$200/t lead to CER prices of US$1/tCO2 reduction in the NEWNE grid and the Southern grid.
