This paper examines training programs for graduate students as junior educators and researchers in U.S. universities in order to learn lessons for the development and improvement of such programs in Japan. For training junior educators, teaching assistant (TA) programs play a crucial role in providing graduate students with invaluable experience of developing their teaching skills. Most large research universities have training programs for new TAs in place, and Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) programs, started in the 1990s, have been assisting graduate students to acquire important skills and knowledge to become faculty members. For training junior researchers, research assistant (RA) programs and postdoctoral fellow (PDF) programs play a major role in providing graduate students with opportunities to develop their research skills. Unlike with TAs, there is no systematic training program for RAs and PDFs, but lessons can be learned from U.S. programs of the responsibilities, statuses, and remuneration for RAs and PDFs at Japanese universities. Japanese universities have expanded their programs for TAs, RAs, and PDFs, but now the quality of these programs needs to be improved to develop the next generation of educators and researchers in Japan.

This paper is intended to prove the utility of digital historical documents concerning George Washington and the Continental (Confederation) Congress in reconstructing several interesting aspects of Colonial and Revolutionary America. As a full-text search can be pursued effectively and quickly by utilizing digitized editions supplied by the websites of the Library of Congress, etc. which are accessible for free, we approach the theme above from three viewpoints: colonial manners, the “first” president of the U.S., and pocket watches of George Washington. In dealing with these subjects, we need to be conscious the whole structure of the historical materials we use, from an angle of “set” concept or nesting construction of documents. Several facts found are as follows. (1) By examining the digitized Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation written by George Washington himself, we find that he lays a stress on prohibitionary rules rather than recommendatory rules, especially talking about rules of conversation, resulting in our detecting interesting manner codes of the 18th century, some of which are still meaningful even today. (2) By investigating the digitized Journals of the Continental Congress which are the most fundamental documents on the Revolutionary era, we find that John Hanson of Maryland, so-called the “first” president of the U.S., cannot be identified even as the first president under the ratified Articles of Confederation nor as an identical president under the U.S. Constitution, inevitably. Moreover, it turns out that Founding Fathers uttered an important phrase, the “American Revolution” only six times in the Journals. (3) By using the full-text searching function equipped in the digitized Writings of George Washington form the Original Manuscript Sources compiled by J. Fitzpatrick, we reconstruct George Washington’s everyday life focusing on a word, “watch.” While showing the contemporary meanings of pocket watches and related items (seals, etc.) in the early modern Atlantic world, we dig into the deep structure of the Writings, and reveal the consumer world of Washington family, details of consignment system, and several customs concerning the transatlantic trade.

This paper deals with the large-scale inertio-gravity (IG) wave energy in the operational ECMWF analyses in July 2007. Energy percentages of the IG waves obtained from the standard-pressure-level data are compared to those derived from various discretizations of the model-level data. The results show a small albeit systematic increase of the IG energy percentage as the vertical level density increases from the standard-pressure levels toward the model-level density; the small relative change is explained by the sufficient vertical resolution to resolve the large-scale IG waves in the tropics that make the majority of the global IG energy on large scales. A relatively larger increase of the IG energy is obtained when the mesospheric model levels are included; however, the analyses at these levels in July 2007 are less reliable. Furthermore, two numerical methods for the normal-mode function (NMF) decomposition are shown to provide similar results. The decomposition of atmospheric analyses into the NMF series is proposed as a tool to analyze the spatial and temporal variations of the large-scale equatorial waves and their role in global energetics.

We have experimentally observed the spin polarization process of single electrons in InP/InGaP quantum dots by time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements. It is found that the inversion of the spin polarization direction occurs with the variation of the intensity of the optical pulse. The spin coherence lifetime abruptly changes on the occurrence of the inversion. We have reproduced the inversion in numerical simulations using the density operator of the electron–trion four-level system, assuming a small deviation of the optical pulse from circular polarization. The change of the spin lifetime is attributed to the qualitative change of the four-level system in the electric polarization state.

We introduce a modified tomographic PIV technique using four high-speed videocameras and a scanning pulsed laser-volume. By rapidly illuminating adjacent subvolumesonto separate video frames, we can resolve a larger total volume of velocityvectors, while retaining good spatial resolution. We demonstrate this technique byperforming time-resolved measurements of the turbulent structure of a round jet,using up to 9 adjacent volume slices. In essence this technique resolves more velocityplanes in the depth direction by maintaining optimal particle image density andlimiting the number of ghost particles. The total measurement volumes contain between1 ×106 and 3 ×106 velocity vectors calculated from up to 1500 reconstructeddepthwise image planes, showing time-resolved evolution of the large-scale vorticalstructures for a turbulent jet of Re up to 10 000.
