In this paper, we propose an H-infinity (H∞) filtering approach for the prediction of bias in post-processing of model outputs and past measurements. This method adopts minimax strategy that is a solution for zero-sum games. The proposed H∞ filtering approach minimizes maximum possible errors whereas a recently common approach that adopts the Kalman filtering (KF) minimizes the mean square errors. The proposed approach does not need the information of noise statistics unlike the method based on the KF, while training process is required. We show that the proposed approach outperforms the method based on the KF in experiments by applying real weather data in Korea.

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) particles have been observed not only in industrial areas and their surroundings but also in natural atmospheric environments. These types of aerosols can influence aerosol–cloud interactions. In this study, physico-chemical properties, such as size distribution and ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) as well as ice nucleating particles (INPs), of surrogates of ambient Al2O3 and Fe2O3 particles were investigated using a CCN counter, the Meteorological Research Institute’s (MRI’s) cloud simulation chamber, the MRI’s continuous flow diffusion chamber-type ice nucleus counter, and an array of aerosol instruments. The results indicated that their hygroscopicity parameter (κ-value) ranged from 0.01 to 0.03. This range is compatible with that of surrogates of mineral dust particles and is smaller than typical κ-values of atmospheric aerosols. On the other hand, based on their ice nucleation active surface site (INAS) densities, these materials may act as effective INPs via immersion freezing (i.e., ice nucleation triggered by particles immersed in water droplets). In the cloud chamber experiments, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 particles continuously nucleated ice crystals at temperatures < −14°C and < −20°C, respectively. This result indicates that the Al2O3 particles were better INPs than the Fe2O3 particles. Moreover, the INAS density of the Al2O3 particles was comparable to that of natural ambient dust.

Dynamic pharyngeal collapse (PC) is a rarely reported condition in cats defined as the partial or complete collapse of the pharyngeal lumen during inspiration. Herein, we report the imaging findings and clinical features of three cats with dynamic PC. Lateral radiograph of the head was insufficient to detect dynamic PC, but fluoroscopy in conscious cats revealed dynamic PC. Magnetic resonance imaging was not helpful to reveal dynamic PC and underlying diseases. We obtained biopsy samples from the irregular mucosal membrane through endoscopy in two of the three cases and high-grade B-cell lymphoma was histopathologically diagnosed. In feline cases with abnormal upper respiratory sounds, dynamic PC should be considered, and fluoroscopy is the imaging technique of choice to diagnose the condition.

Cylindrical nano-pores of an anodized aluminum oxide layer on the surface of bulk aluminum were used as templates for the electrochemical growth of semiconductor and magnetic nanowires. The electrodeposition of CdTe and NiFe was investigated to determine the optimum conditions for each nanowire growth over a wide range of cathode potentials. The desired composition of Cd50Te50 and Ni80Fe20 was achieved by controlling the cathode potential during electrodeposition. Temperature dependences of resistance for CdTe nanowires confirmed the semiconductor character with amorphous behavior at low temperature, while those of NiFe nanowires showed metallic character. The anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of NiFe nanowires reached 1.9% at 300 K.

クラウドソーシングにおいて、ワーカーの多くが十分な賃金を獲得できていないことが問題視されている。原因の一つとして、まだ取り組んだことのないマイクロタスクの「割の良さ」を正確に見積もることの難しさが挙げられる。本研究では、他のワーカーによる過去のタスク作業履歴をもとに、新たに発行された未知のタスクに必要な作業時間と時給を推定する手法を提案する。Amazon Mechanical Turkのワーカー84人に独自に開発したウェブブラウザ拡張機能をインストールさせて9,155件のタスクデータを抽出し、異なる方法で計測した4パターンの時間の候補からワーカー自身に一つ選ばせることで作業時間のラベルを付与した。さらにGradient Boosting Decision Treeのモデルから作業時間を回帰推定するTurkScannerを設計・評価し、約150次元の特徴ベクトルから高い精度で作業時間を推定することを示した。

アルファルファ(Medicago Saliva L., cv. Natsuwakaba)を収穫後ただちに細断し抗酸化剤とよく混合したのち圧搾し,搾汁を得た。用いた抗酸化剤はエトキシキン,異性重亜硫酸ソーダ,ブチル化ハイドロキシアニソール(BHA),アスコルビン酸,α-トコフェロールおよび緑茶である。無添加を含めた7種類の搾汁を蒸気により瞬時に90℃に熟し,生じた凝固物を連続遠心機で分離し,凍結乾燥した。この乾燥物を以後,緑葉抽出物と呼ぶ。各緑葉抽出物を100ml容の透明瓶および褐色瓶に1本当たり3gいれ,栓をするに先立ち,各々の半数に窒素ガスを充満させた。透明および褐色瓶を28℃に保ちつつ蛍光灯により12時間照明した場合,および暗黒下-18℃で貯蔵した場合のカロチノイド含量の推移を60週間にわたって調査した。暗黒下-18℃では,抗酸化剤に関係なくキサントフィルはよく保護されたが,β-カロチンの長期貯蔵には抗酸化剤の助けを必要とし,エトキシキンの添加によりほぼ完全に保護された。照明下28℃では,キサントフィルおよびβ-カロチンとも減少したが,エトキシキン処理をし褐色瓶に蓄えることによりその程度は著しく緩和され,60週後でも初期値の2/3以上が保たれた。容器の窒素ガスによる充満は,緑葉抽出物貯蔵中のカロチノイドの保護に対し効果がなかった。BHA,異性重亜硫酸ソーダおよび緑茶も短期間の貯蔵に対しては有効だった。しかしα-トコフェロールおよびアスコルビン酸には効果が認められなかった。以上の結果,原料草にエトキシキンを添加し調製後-18℃の暗室中で貯蔵した緑葉抽出物中のカロチノイドは,60週間にわたる貯蔵期間中安定であることが判明した。原料草へのエトキシキン添加は,抽出物中への蛋白質の回収に対しても有効だった。

An investigation has been carried out using rainfall observation data, National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) analysis and forecast data to explain the environment and processes that lead to heavy rainfall in the early morning over the Korean peninsula during episodes of cloud clusters (CCs) associated with mesoscale troughs (CCMTs). For this study, nine episodes with maximum hourly rainfall amount in the early morning (i.e., 0300–0900 LST) are selected from seventeen heavy-rainfall episodes associated with CCMTs during 2001–2011. Case studies on two episodes have revealed that, for both episodes, 1) a low-level trough develops over eastern China and its coastal area during the daytime; 2) the strong southwesterly band (SWB; an area with wind speeds > 12.5 m s-1) on the pressure level 925 hPa over the East China Sea, which is located southeast of the trough, strengthens and expands at nighttime toward the southwestern Korean peninsula; 3) the SWB supplies large amount of moisture and increases convective instability over the southwestern Korean peninsula with a convection trigger mechanism (i.e., strong horizontal convergence); and 4) heavy rainfall occurs in the early morning over the southwestern Korean peninsula, where the exit region of the SWB is located. A mechanism for the SWB growth is presented. Furthermore, generality of the major results from the two case studies is verified using the results obtained for the composite fields of the 9 CCMT episodes.

An autopsied patient who showed typical dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)-like features and was pathologically diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is presented. The patient, a 60-year-old male at the time of death, died of intractable congestive heart failure. At autopsy the heart weighted 570g and showed marked left ventricular (LV) dilatation with a thin wall (ventricular septum/free wall of the LV=7mm/8mm). There was no evidence of significant stenosis in the extramural coronary arteries. Massive fibrosis was found in the middle and outer thirds of the ventricular septum and anterior wall of the LV (48% in the ventricular septum and 9% in the free wall of the LV). As myocytes were not present in the area with massive fibrosis, percent area of disarray was calculated excluding the area of massive fibrosis and found to be 30% in the ventricular septum. Based on the marked increase in the percent area of disarray, this case was diagnosed as HCM. The patient's 37-year-old son showed asymmetric septal hypertrophy on echocardiography (ventricular septum/posterior wall of the LV = 15mm / 11mm), marked LV hypertrophy on electrocardiography, and diffuse and marked disarray by endomyocardial biopsy. There were also LV dilatation (LV diastolic dimension =51 mm) and hypokinesis of the LV ; as a result, a diagnosis of HCM with features of DCM was made.

岩石のモードI破壊靭性を評価するための試験法がこれまでに数多く提案されてきているが,同じ岩石の破壊靭性を異なった試験法で評価し,得られた結果が比較されることはまれである。このため,破壊靭性に及ぼす試験法の違いが明らかにされているとは言い難い。また,岩石の破壊靭性は試験法の違いだけでなく,用いる供試体寸法によっても影響を受けると考えられる。これらの影響を明らかにするために,様々な破壊靭性試験が行われてきた。しかし,これまでの実験では,同じ岩石で作製された供試体数が十分でなかったり,あるいは供試体寸法の違いの範囲が狭かったために,それらの影響を明らかにするまでに至っていないと考えられる。 本論文では,来待砂岩を供試体として用い,3種類の破壊靭性試験法,すなわち,CB試験,SCB試験およびSNDB試験を実施し,破壊靭性に及ぼす試験法の影響を検討するとともに,半径12.5mm〜150mmの範囲の供試体を用いたSCB試験を実施し,供試体寸法の影響を検討した。この結果,CB試験とSCB試験による破壊靭性はほぼ同等の結果を得ることができたが,SNDB試験の破壊靭性はそれらの値より小さく評価されることを示した。また,供試体寸法が大きくなるとともに破壊靭性も増大することを明らかにした。

We investigated factors that affect the desirability of Cheddar-type cheeses among collegiate women in Japan using sensory and instrumental analyses. The sensory characteristics of seven Cheddar cheeses were analyzed, i.e., volatile composition; fatty acid composition; low molecular weight compounds including amino acids, amines, and organic acids; texture; and color. PCA models based on the sensory attributes and instrumental analyses of the cheeses demonstrated that the texture, pH, flavor intensity, and amount of amino acids in Cheddar cheeses affected their desirability. Volatile compounds detected by headspace SPME-GC/MS explained the flavor intensity, whereas those detected by SDE-GC/MS were related to a desirable aroma after eating. The descriptive sensory analysis showed that “butter” and “mango” aroma characteristics, which were related to methyl ketone and ester volatile compounds, were important factors that affected Cheddar cheese desirability. The sensory properties changed throughout ripening because of variations in these components.

A 37-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presented with gait disturbance and cognitive dysfunction. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed small, punctate, T2-/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery-hyperintense and T1-hypointense lesions without gadolinium enhancement, which is atypical for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). On a pathological examination of biopsied brain tissues, JC virus-infected cells were hardly detected via immunohistochemistry but were certainly detected via in situ hybridization, conclusively verifying the PML diagnosis. After tapering off the immunosuppressant and mefloquine administration, the MRI findings revealed gradual improvement, and she has been stable for over 18 months. A punctate MRI pattern is not specific to natalizumab-associated PML but may be a ubiquitous early sign useful for the early diagnosis of PML.

Although Pantoea species are widely distributed among plants, water, soils, humans, and animals, due to a lack of efficient isolation methods, the clonality of Pantoea species is poorly characterized. Therefore, we developed a new semi-selective medium designated ‘lysine-ornithine-mannitol-arginine-charcoal’ (LOMAC) to isolate these species. In an inclusive and exclusive study examining 94 bacterial strains, all Pantoea strains exhibited yellow colonies on LOMAC medium. The performance of the medium was assessed using Pantoea-spiked soils. Percent average agreement relative to the Api20E biochemical test was 97%. A total of 24 soil spot samples and 19 plant types were subjected to practical trials. Of the 91 yellow colonies selected on LOMAC medium, 81 were correctly identified as Pantoea species using the biochemical test. The sequencing of 16S rRNA (rrs) and gyrB from these isolates confirmed that Pantoea agglomerans, P. vagans, P. ananatis, and P. deleyi were present in Japanese fields. A phylogenetic analysis using rrs enabled only the limited separation of strains within each Pantoea spp., whereas an analysis using gyrB revealed higher variability and enabled the finer resolution of distinct branches. P. agglomerans isolates were divided into 3 groups, 2 of which were new clades, with the other comprising a large group including biocontrol strains. P. vagans was also in one of the new clades. The present results indicate that LOMAC medium is useful for screening Pantoea species. The use of LOMAC medium will provide new opportunities for identifying the beneficial properties of Japanese Pantoea isolates.

Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) is one of the important adverse events following organ transplantation, associated with calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs). We describe a case of 54-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with RPLS within weeks after transplantation. Considering the risk of causing fatal rejection by discontinuation of CNIs, the immunosuppressive regimen of the patient was switched from a cyclosporine A-based regimen to a tacrolimus-based regimen. The patient recovered rapidly from RPLS following the switch to tacrolimus. This case demonstrated that not only discontinuation but also a substitution of CNIs would be a valid treatment option for RPLS in transplant recipients.

Background:Many studies show that dietary factors such as vegetables, fruit, and salt are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, a risk assessment chart for CVD mortality according to combinations of dietary factors has not been established.Methods and Results:Participants were 9,115 men and women aged 30–79 years enrolled in the National Nutritional Survey of Japan in 1980 with a 29-year follow-up. Dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day weighed dietary record at baseline. Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) of CVD mortality stratified by vegetables, fruit, fish, and salt consumption. HRs of CVD mortality according to combinations of dietary factors were color coded on an assessment chart. Higher intakes of vegetables, fruit, and fish, and lower salt intake were associated with lower CVD mortality risk. HRs calculated from combinations of dietary factors were displayed using 5 colors corresponding to the magnitude of the HR. People with the lowest intake of vegetables, fruit, and fish, and higher salt intake had a HR of 2.87 compared with those with the highest intake of vegetables, fruit, and fish, and lower salt intake.Conclusions:Vegetables, fruit, fish, and salt intake were independently associated with CVD mortality risk. The assessment chart generated could be used in Japan as an educational tool for CVD prevention.

The conversion of (+) -limonen-10-ol (7) into the key intermediate for the synthesis of carbacyclin (1), (+) - (1S, 2R, 3R, 5R) -3-acetoxy-2-methoxycarbony1-7-oxobicyclo [3.3.0] octane (2), is described. The cis-3, 4-disubstituted cyclopentanone prepared from 7 via a sequence of reactions involving Rh (I) -catalyzed cyclization could be converted to the 3-acetylbicyclo [3.3.0] oct-2-ene skeleton, which was subjected to 1, 4-addition reaction with CN-. The resulting cyano compound was transformed into the key intermediate 2 through appropriate modification of the substituents on the five-membered ring. This synthetic method provides a new route to carbacyclin.

All-trans retinoic acid (RA) is a metabolite of vitamin A and has pleiotropic actions on many different biological processes, including cell growth and differentiation, and is involved in different aspects of fertility and developmental biology. In the current study, we investigated the effects of RA on camel (Camelus dromedarius) cumulus-oocyte complex in vitro maturation (IVM). IVM medium was supplemented with 0, 10, 20, and 40 µM RA. Application of 20 µM RA significantly reduced the proportion of degenerated oocytes and significantly improved oocyte meiosis and first polar body extrusion compared to the control and other experimental groups. Retinoic acid significantly reduced the mRNA transcript levels of apoptosis-related genes, including BAX and P53, and reduced the BAX/BCL2 ratio. In addition, RA significantly reduced the expression of the Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) pathway-related transcripts associated with the actin cytoskeleton, ACTA2 and TAGLN; however, RA increased TGFβ expression in cumulus cells. The small molecule SB-431542 inhibits the TGFβ pathway by inhibiting the activity of activin receptor-like kinases (ALK-4, ALK-5, and ALK-7); however, combined supplementation with RA during IVM compensated for the inhibitory effect of SB-431542 on cumulus expansion, oocyte meiosis I, and first polar body extrusion in activated oocytes. The current study shows the beneficial effects of RA on camel oocyte IVM and provides a model to study the multifunctional mechanisms involved in cumulus expansion and oocyte meiosis, particularly those involved in the TGFβ pathway.

A definitive diagnosis of focal liver lesions (FLLs) requires invasive procedures for histopathologic examination. Thus, a simpler noninvasive diagnostic method, such as conventional ultrasonography combined with clinical data, is needed for the prediction of liver malignancy. The objective of this study was to examine the diagnostic accuracy of clinical data and ultrasonographic (US) features to differentiate benign and malignant liver lesions. Medical records and US images from dogs with FLLs that underwent abdominal US and histopathologic examinations following surgery or liver biopsy were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data, including signalment, clinical signs and laboratory findings, and the US features of liver lesions that could act as predictive factors were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses to evaluate the associations between predictive factors and liver malignancy. Based on the histopathologic results, 55 dogs with malignant lesions and 28 dogs with benign lesions were included in the study. The results of univariate analysis showed that several US features and platelet count were significantly associated with liver malignancy. Multivariate analysis revealed that the platelet count (thrombocytosis; odds ratio [OR]: 4.13, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.81–9.41), lesion size (4.1 cm or greater; OR: 23.83, 95% CI: 3.74–151.95) and echotexture of FLLs (heterogenous; OR: 8.44; 95% CI: 1.37–51.91) were independent predictors for differentiating benign and malignant liver lesions, suggesting that a combination of clinical data and US findings of FLLs could predict liver malignancy in dogs.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cardiac acute volume loading effect on left atrial (LA) strain and strain rate (SR) parameters derived from two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) in healthy dogs. Six healthy beagles were anesthetized and subjected to increase cardiac preload by intravenous infusion with lactated Ringer solution at 150 ml/kg/hr for 90 min. A Swan-Ganz catheter was placed to directly measure the mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP). Echocardiography was performed before (baseline) and at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 min after acute volume loading began. Apical 4-chamber images focused on the LA were digitally recorded for later strain and SR analysis via 2D-STE. Acute volume loading significantly increased from baseline during LA strain and SR as assessed by the speckle tracking–based technique during reservoir and conduit function at 15 to 90 min after volume load began, and strain indices representing booster pump function were enhanced at 45 to 90 min. In addition, acute volume loading resulted in a significantly greater PCWP after fluid infusion. On multiple regression analysis, quadratic regression analysis was a better fit for the relationship between PCWP and all LA functional indices. Our findings indicated that LA function analyzed by strain and SR was enhanced during cardiac acute volume loading in healthy dogs. The change in strain and SR during acute volume loading should be interpreted with caution during the diagnosis of heart diseases related to volume overload.

Discal cysts are a rare cause of low back pain and radiculopathy with unknown pathophysiologic mechanism. Associated symptoms are difficult to distinguish from those caused by extruded discs and other spinal canal lesions. Most discal cysts are treated surgically, but it is unclear whether the corresponding intervertebral disc should be excised along with cyst. We conducted a retrospective clinical review of 27 patients who underwent discal cyst excision at our institution between 2000 and 2017. The mean follow-up period was 63.6 months. We recorded symptoms, radiographs, operative findings, postoperative complications, and short- and long-term outcomes. Structured outcome assessment was based on Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain intensity, Oswestry disability index, and Macnab classification. All patients underwent partial hemilaminectomy and microscopic cyst resection without discectomy. All patients had preoperative back or leg pain. Other preoperative clinical features included motor weakness, neurogenic intermittent claudication, and cauda equina syndrome. After surgery, NRS scores of back and leg pain decreased. The other symptoms also improved. During long-term follow-up, patients reported no restrictions on daily life activities, and were satisfied with our intervention. There were no cases of cyst recurrence. We conducted a review of the literature on lumbar discal cysts published before January, 2018. Including our cases, 126 patients were described. We compared two surgical modalities—cystectomy with and without discectomy—to elucidate both effectiveness and long-term complications. We found that microsurgical cystectomy without corresponding discectomy is an effective surgical treatment for lumbar discal cysts, and is associated with a low recurrence rate.

From the viewpoint of energy conservation and the development of new energy resources,it is important to utilize geothermal resources and waste heat from factories. Among energy conversion device,there is a radial outflow reaction turbine,i.e.,Hero's turbine. Performance characteristics of Hero's turbine are analytically and experimentally clarified for flashing expansion of initially subcooled hot water. It is found that: (a)there is an optimum number of revolutions at which maximum tubine efficiency can be obtained; (b)Hero's turbine internal efficiency can be expressed as an algebraic equation and (c)nozzle loss accounts for almost 90% of the total turbine loss.
