[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the preventive effects of stretching and stabilization exercises on muscle fatigue of the neck erector spine and upper trapezius muscles. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects of this study were 26 healthy university students (14 males and 12 females). Each subject was assigned randomly to each of three study groups in order to prevent order effect. The three groups included in this study were the no-exercise, stretching exercise, and neck stabilization exercise groups. The median electromyographic frequency was used as a gauge of muscle fatigue. [Results] Decreased muscle fatigue was demonstrated by an increase in the median electromyographic frequency values in all the four muscle groups in the comparison between conditions 1 and 3. In particular, statistically significant differences were found between the two conditions in the right upper trapezius muscle group. [Conclusion] These findings suggest that the effect of stretching and stabilization exercises can reduce muscle fatigue in mobile phone users.

Aim: Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) have been involved in the atherogenic process in the high-risk population. The goal of this study was to demonstrate that AGEs are related to subclinical atheromatous disease in subjects with low to moderate vascular risk.Methods: A cross-sectional study in which 2,568 non-diabetic subjects of both sexes without cardiovascular disease were included. Subcutaneous content of AGEs was assessed by skin autofluorescence (SAF) and subclinical atheromatous disease was measured by assessing the atheromatous plaque burden in carotid and femoral regions using ultrasonography. In addition, serum pentosidine, carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) and AGE receptors (RAGE) were assessed in a nested case-control study with 41 subjects without plaque and 41 individuals subjects with generalized disease.Results: Patients with atheromatous plaque had a higher SAF than those with no plaque (1.9 [1.7 to 2.3] vs. 1.8 [1.6 to 2.1] arbitrary units (AU), p<0.001). The SAF correlated with the total number of affected regions (r= 0.171, p<0.001), increasing progressively from 1.8 [1.6 to 2.1] AU in those without atheromatous disease to 2.3 [1.9 to 2.7] AU in patients with ≥ 8 plaques (p<0.001). A correlation was also observed between SAF and the total plaque area (r=0.113, p<0.001). The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve was 0.65 (0.61 to 0.68) for identifying male subjects with atheromatous disease. The multivariable logistic regression model showed a significant and independent association between SAF and the presence of atheromatous disease. However, no significant differences in serum pentosidine, CML, and RAGE were observed.Conclusions: Increased subcutaneous content of AGEs is associated with augmented atheromatous plaque burden. Our results suggest that SAF may provide clinically relevant information to the current strategies for the evaluation of cardiovascular risk, especially among the male population.

早川勝教授古稀記念論集Dedicated to Professor Masaru Hayakawa on his 70th birthday論説(Article)この論文の主旨は、明治時代における日独法学交流に関する研究である。特に会社法を中心にして、日本におけるドイツ会社法の継受とドイツにおいて当時に日本の会社法に関する知識がどのような形で広められたかは資料分析の対象であった。日本における会社法の近代化に、渋沢英一が重要な役割を果たし、ドイツ会社の継受とHermann Roeslerの名前が密接的に結ばれている。注目すべき点はRoesler会社法草案に日本の慣習法はどこまで認められているかである。逆に、日本法をドイツに紹介することにおいて、若手の研究者が決定的な役割を果たしていた。典型的な事例として、Halle大学に提出された高木新平(1890年、透明会社について)や神戸寅次郎(1902年、合名会社について)の博士論文を紹介する。The present paper is dealing with the history of academic judicial exchange between Japan and Germany in the Meiji-era, concentrating on the field of company law, especially on the reception of German company law in Japan and the question, how knowledge about Japanese company law was disseminated at that time in Germany. With regard to the development of Japanese company law at the beginning of the Meiji-era, Shibusawa Eiichi, also called "father of Japanese capitalism", introduced many economic reforms, including joint stock corporations. As these ideas needed a legal framework, the government invited foreign scholars to help shaping a modern legal system, especially - due to the constraints of the unequal treaties" – a modern commercial and company law. Hermann Roesler, a legal scholar from Germany, played an important role in this context through his draft of a commercial code. It is interesting to see, how traditional elements of Japanese law, especially commercial customary law, was dealt with in this draft. On the other hand, it is rather less known, that knowledge about the modernization of Japanese law, above others company law, was spread in Germany, amongst others, through PhD-theses at Halle-University by Takaki Shinpei (1890 on silent partnership) and Kambe Torajiro (1902 on general partnership).

Recently, in the machinery field, the outoput of actuators becomes greater by the demands for high speed response and high accuracy positioning control. On the other hand, the demands for cost and lighter weight make the machine stand slimer. As a result, the machine stand vibrates at each opertation of actuators and this vibration possibly affects a positioning control. That is, the settling time of the positioning control is prolonged. In order to remove this influence, this paper shows the method of a feedforward controller design for a system including not only a machine but also a machine stand. Moreover, the model for this system is proposed and identified by the genetic algorithm in order to make the feedfoward controller design possible. Effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by the experiments.

Objective Post-transcriptional taurine modification at the first anticodon ("wobble") nucleotide is deficient in A3243G-mutant mitochondrial (mt) tRNALeu(UUR) of patients with myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). Wobble nucleotide modifications in tRNAs have recently been identified to be important in the accurate and efficient deciphering of codons. We herein examined whether taurine can alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction in patient-derived pathogenic cells and prevent clinical symptoms in MELAS patients. Methods and Results The addition of taurine to the culture media ameliorated the reduced oxygen consumption, decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased the oxidative stress in MELAS patient-derived cells. Moreover, high dose oral administration of taurine (0.25 g/kg/day) completely prevented stroke-like episodes in two MELAS patients for more than nine years. Conclusion Taurine supplementation may be a novel potential treatment option for preventing the stroke-like episodes associated with MELAS.

Background: Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective non-interventional study of stroke prevention in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular AF (NAVF) that is being conducted in 35 countries. Methods and Results: A total of 52,081 patients with a new diagnosis of NVAF were enrolled prospectively in GARFIELD-AF. Of these, 4859 (9.3%) were recruited in Japan (2010–2016). In cohort 1 (2010–2011), few patients were on non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC) globally. From cohort 2 onwards (2011–2016), however, there was a rapid increase in NOAC use around the globe, especially in Japan. By the last year of enrolment (2015–2016), 67.9% of patients in Japan and 43.1% of patients globally were on NOAC±antiplatelet therapy (AP). In Japan and globally, 17.0% and 12.2% of patients, respectively, did not receive stroke prevention treatment. Few patients in Japan (5.7%) received AP only. Compared with the other countries, the unadjusted rates of all-cause mortality and major bleeding were low, while rates of stroke/systemic embolism were similar after 1 year of follow-up. Conclusions: GARFIELD-AF continues to provide important information on the homogeneity and heterogeneity of baseline characteristics and treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed NVAF. This diversity reflects the differences in outcomes in Japan compared with the rest of the world.

Micro-scale enterprises (MSEs) with less than 5 employees are subject to be covered by the scheme of the regular workplace environmental inspection and medical health examination from 2002 in Korea. Due to limited resources as well as vast number of enterprises to be covered, there is an urgent need to focus these efforts to only those high-risk MSEs. To identify them, a qualitative risk assessment methodology was developed combining the hazardous nature of chemicals and exposure potentials as modeled by the HSE and the risk categorization technique by the AIHA. Risk Index (RI) was determined by combining characteristics specific to chemicals and scale of use of the chemicals. The method was applied to 514 MSEs that were selected from a random sample of 4000 MSEs. A total of 170 out of 514 MSEs studied were included in the final analysis. Current status and characteristics of MSEs were identified and RI was assigned to chemicals in each industry. Based on the distribution of RIs, the high-risk MSEs were selected. These include: wood and products of wood, chemicals and chemical products, basic metals, other machinery and equipment, motor vehicles, trailer and semi-trailer manufacturing, and furniture manufacturing. Since these MSEs are high-risk ones, more attentions should be focused on them. This method can be applied to other workplaces with no previous history of quantitative workplace inspections.<br>

Synthesium elongatum (Brachycladiidae) is an intestinal digenean described from the finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) in Japan. Few records of this species exist and there is a remarkable morphological similarity between S. elongatum and S. tursionis, such that a synonymy between the species has been suggested previously. However, no morphological and/or molecular analysis has been carried out to clarify the taxonomic status of S. elongatum. In this study, we collected specimens of Synthesium sp. from N. asiaeorientalis in western Japan. The specimens possess lobed testes within the third quarter of the body, a round ovary, and vitellaria extending to level of uterine field, which are diagnostic characters for both S. elongatum and S. tursionis. They were morphologically identified to S. elongatum or S. tursionis due to the fact that the available morphometric data for both species overlap remarkably. A molecular analysis of the mitochondrial ND3 gene showed that the pairwise nucleotide distances between these specimens and S. tursionis were small, and phylogenetic analysis showed that these specimens and S. tursionis are in the same clade. Therefore, it was indicated that S. elongatum and S. tursionis are the same species and, consequently, S. elongatum is a synonym of S. tursionis.

The influence of seawater salts as salting out agents on the purge-and-trap gas chromatography (PT-GC) determination of trihalomethanes (THMs) was studied. This is particularly important since seawater is chlorinated when used as a cooling agent in coastal nuclear power stations. The chlorination produces unwanted THMs as by-products. A PT-GC apparatus was used to determine the Henry&rsquo;s Law constant of each THM, with seawater as the sample matrix.

Background: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a novel strategy which amplifies DNA with high sensitivity and rapidity under isothermal conditions. In the present study, the performance of the repetitive insertion mobile element (RIME)-LAMP and human serum resistance-associated gene (SRA)-LAMP assays were evaluated using clinical specimens obtained from four male patients from Luangwa and Zambezi valleys in Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively. Findings: The cases reported in this preliminary communication were all first diagnosed by microscopy, through passive surveillance, and confirmed by both RIME-LAMP and SRA-LAMP. A good correlation between microscopy and LAMP was observed and contributed to staging and successful treatment of patient. RIME-LAMP and SRA-LAMP complimented each other well in all the cases. Conclusions: Both RIME-LAMP and SRA-LAMP were able to detect Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense DNA in patient blood and CSF and hence confirmed HAT in the parasitaemic patients. Our study indicates that the LAMP technique is a potential tool for HAT diagnosis, staging and may be useful for making therapeutic decisions. However, no statistically significant conclusion may be drawn due to the limited sample size used in the present study. It is thus imperative to conduct a detailed study to further evaluate the potential of LAMP as a bedside diagnostic test for HAT.
