ネパール・カトマンズ盆地では、水源の微生物汚染が深刻な問題となっている。本研究では、カトマンズ盆地において飲用水や生活用水として主に利用されている市販の飲用ボトル水(10試料)、浅井戸地下水(10試料)、深井戸地下水(3試料)、公共水場水(1試料)、湧水(2試料)と、河川水(2試料)の計28試料を採取し、病原性細菌の存在を網羅的に調査した。ヒト、動物、植物、及び魚介類に感染する941種/グループの病原性細菌(バイオセーフティレベル(BSL)2、3の全属及び日和見感染菌)の16S rRNA遺伝子を標的とするDNAマイクロアレイを用いた病原性細菌の網羅的検出の結果、Acinetobacter属、Arthrobacter属、Brevibacterium属、Pseudomonas属、及びLegionella属が大部分の試料で検出され、一部の試料ではBSL3の病原性細菌も検出された。Legionella属及びBSL3に属するBrucella属を対象として属特異的PCRによる定量検出を試みた結果、一部の試料においてDNAマイクロアレイ解析を支持する結果が得られた。また、DNAマイクロアレイ解析において6試料以上で検出された病原性細菌を対象として、糞便汚染指標(大腸菌群、大腸菌)との関連性について検討を行った結果、そのほとんどが糞便汚染指標とは相関を示さないことが明らかとなった。本研究の成果は、カトマンズ盆地における病原性細菌汚染の解明や、詳細な調査を要する病原性細菌種の特定の一助となり得るものと考えられる。

The present study comprised 1,781 nurses who participated in an investigation about working conditions, sleep, and health. They answered a questionnaire about age, sex, marital status, children living at home, work hours per week, number of night shifts last year, and total sleep duration and that also included a validated instrument assessing workaholism. In addition, they were asked to report on eight items concerning negative work-related incidents (dozed off at work, dozed while driving, harmed or nearly harmed self, harmed or nearly harmed patients/others, and harmed or nearly harmed equipment). Logistic regression analyses identified several predictors of these specific incidents: Low age (dozed at work, harmed and nearly harmed self, harmed and nearly harmed equipment), male sex (harmed and nearly harmed self, nearly harmed equipment), not living with children (harmed patients/others), low percentage of full-time equivalent (nearly harmed self and harmed patients/others), number of night shifts last year (dozed off at work and while driving, nearly harmed patients/others) and sleep duration (inversely related to dozed off at work and while driving, nearly harmed self). However, the most consistent predictor of negative work-related incidents was workaholism which was positively and significantly associated with all the eight incidents.

To evaluate the effects of heat acclimation on sweat rate redistribution and thermodynamic parameters, 9 tropical native volunteers were submitted to 11 days of exercise-heat exposures (40±0°C and 45.1±0.2% relative humidity). Sudomotor function was evaluated by measuring total and local (forehead, chest, arm, forearm, and thigh) sweat rates, local sweat sodium concentration, and mean skin and rectal temperatures. We also calculated heat production (H), heat storage (S), heat exchange by radiation (R) and by convection (C), evaporated sweat (Esw), sweating efficiency (ηsw), skin wettedness (wsk), and the ratio between the heat storage and the sum of heat production and heat gains by radiation and convection (S/(H+R+C)). The heat acclimation increased the whole-body sweat rate and reduced the mean skin temperature. There were changes in the local sweat rate patterns: on the arm, forearm, and thigh it increased significantly from day 1 to day 11 (all p<0.05) and the sweat rates from the forehead and the chest showed a small nonsignificant increase (p=0.34 and 0.17, respectively). The relative increase of local sweat rates on day 11 was not different among the sites; however, when comparing the limbs (arm, forearm, and thigh) with the trunk (forehead and chest), there was a significant higher increase in the limbs (32±5%) in comparison to the trunk (11±2%, p=0.001). After the heat acclimation period we observed higher wsk and Esw and reduced S/(H+R+C), meaning greater thermoregulatory efficiency. The increase in the limb sweat rate, but not the increase in the trunk sweat rate, correlated with the increased wsk, Esw, and reduced S/(H+R+C) (p<0.05 to all). Altogether, it can be concluded that heat acclimation increased the limbs' sweat rates in tropical natives and that this increase led to increased loss of heat through evaporation of sweat and this higher sweat evaporation was related to higher thermoregulatory efficiency.

インドネシア西ヌサテンガラ州の東ロンボク島では,2005 年にマラリアアウトブレイクが発生し,数多くの犠牲者を出した。しかし近年では,マラリア感染者数は減少し,犠牲者はゼロとなった。特に,マタラム大学医学部ムリヤント教授と佛教大学社会学部満田教授との国際共同研究「マラリア・コントロール・プログラム」における「マラリア感染拡大に関する社会疫学調査(CBDESS I and II, 2006?08)」の対象地区で,極めて高度なマラリア感染地域であったPijot, Tanjung Luar,Batunampar, Sukuraja の4 地区では,同プログラムの効果も相まって,現在,マラリア患者は激減している。同調査報告書(社会学部論集第45 号,46 号,48 号,50 号:2007, 2008, 2009,2010)では,マラリア対策におけるマラリア教育の重要性が指摘され,また同地区での予備調査(2011)では,小学生の69.3% がマラリアに関する知識が不足していることが実証された。そこで,「マラリア・コントロール・プログラム」では,2012 年から「持続可能なマラリア教育メソッド(Mataram University Method forSustainable Malaria Education: MUM/SME)」の開発と実践プロジェクトをスタートした。本プロジェクトでは,小学生がマラリアの医学的知識を学習する独自のメソッドを開発し,Health Messenger として学校や家庭,コミュニティにおいてマラリア予防のために活躍できる教育システムの構築を目標としている。「持続可能なマラリア教育メソッド」では,2012 年1 月に上記4 地区の5 小学校の5-6 年生400 名を対象に,「マラリア知識と行動に関する社会疫学調査(ESMKBAESCEL)」,いわゆるプレ調査を実施した(詳細は,社会学部論集第56 号:1?22)。今回のポスト調査(2013 月6 月)では「熟議型調査法」を援用し,プレ調査に続き,マタラム大学医学生40 名が当該小学校において,「マラリアの語り部」として,昨夏の調査結果をアニメ化したパンフレット(「マラリア見守り隊」が活躍するストーリー)を用い,マラリアの医学知識を解説し,マラリア知識に関するゲームを実施した。その後,マラリア社会疫学調査(ESMKB AESCEL)を再度遂行し,新しいメソッドの教育効果を検証した。小学生参加型の「持続可能なマラリア教育メソッド(SBMI ESCEL)」の成果としては,主に以下の点が特筆される。プレ調査では全問正解者がほぼ皆無であったマラリアに関する8 つの基本項目の正解率が,ポスト調査では55% にまで上昇した。また,マラリア撲滅への関心や意欲も格段に高まり,全項目で想定以上の教育効果がみられた。従来の官製資料の学校配布や医者による専門的指導に代え,より子供が親しみやすいよう考案されたアニメ型のパンフレットやマラリアの語り部,ゲーム(マラリア知識のコンペ)の導入によって,顕著な教育効果があることが明らかになった。今後は,ゲーム参加者に「マラリア見守り隊」認定証を贈呈し,かれらがHealthMessenger(健康普及者)として活躍できるマラリア教育システムのさらなる開発を目指す。

ミズワニ科シロワニ属のOdontaspis noronhai はこれまで大西洋からのみ報告されていた (holotypeのものとほとんど同じ歯列をもつインド洋あるいは南シナ海でとれたと思われる一組の顎の報告はある).今回ハワイ島の南西550kmの地点でマグロ延縄にかかつた個体が採集されたので, その測定値と粛列について他海域のものと比較し報告する.標本は北海道大学水産学部に保管されている.

To characterise the crust-mantle boundary (petrological Moho) and to find evidence of ophiolite model, we investigated the lithology and the development process of the oceanic crust. We carried out geological and geophysical studies of Atlantis Bank core complex located at the eastern margin of the Atlantis-II active transform in the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) using deep sea submersibles and remotely operated vehicles. Unaltered lower crust and uppermost mantle rocks were observed at the southwestern slope of Atlantis Bank. The lower crust of this part of Atlantis Bank is similar to the ophiolite exposed ashore. On the other hand, a large number of dike intrusions into gabbroic massifs were observed at the eastern wall and at the southern slope of the bank. This corresponds to the dike-gabbro transition in the ophiolite model. Dike intrusions were also observed in the mantle peridotite domains. This may, however, suggest melt intrusions into the bank near the spreading axis posterior to the mantle peridotite that was dragged out along the detachment faults, or may suggest possible horizontal melt intrusion from the segment centre to the segment edge characterised by a thin plutonic layer. The northern ridge-transform intersection RTI of the Atlantis-II active transform presents an L-shaped nodal basin, while the southern RTI presents a V-shaped one. The difference between northern and southern RTI types suggests differences in the structure and basement rock types. A fossil transform fault and RTI relics at the northern side of the spreading axis west of the Atlantis-II active transform were observed, suggesting a sudden change of the spreading direction in SWIR from 20 Ma

The satellite platform BIROS is the second technology demonstrator of DLR’s ‘FireBIRD’ space mission aiming to provide infrared remote sensing for early fire detection. Among several mission goals and scientific experiments, to demonstrate a high-agility attitude control system, the platform is actuated with an extra array of three orthogonal ‘High-Torque-Wheels.’ However, to enable agile reorientation, a challenge arises from the fact that time-optimal slew maneuvers are, in general, not of the Euler-axis rotation type; especially whenever the actuators are constrained independently. Moreover, BIROS’ on-board computer can only accommodate rotational acceleration commands twice per second. The objective is therefore to find a methodology to design fast slew maneuvers while considering a highly dynamic plant commanded by piecewise-constant sampled-time control inputs. This is achieved by considering a comprehensive analytical nonlinear model for spacecraft equipped with reaction wheels and transcribing a time-optimal control problem formulation into a multi-criteria optimization problem. Solutions are found with a direct approach using the trajectory optimization package ‘trajOpt’ of DLR-SR’s optimization tool, Multi-Objective Parameter Synthesis (MOPS). Results based on numerical simulations are presented to illustrate this method.

Oral carcinoma develops from squamous epithelial cells by the acquisition of multiple (epi) genetic alterations that target different genes and molecular pathways. Herein, we performed a comprehensive genomic and epigenetic characterization of the HSC-3 cell line through karyotyping, multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization, array comparative genomic hybridization, and methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. HSC-3 turned out to be a near-triploid cell line with a modal number of 61 chromosomes. Banding and molecular cytogenetic analyses revealed that nonrandom gains of chromosomal segments occurred more frequently than losses. Overall, gains of chromosome 1, 3q, 5p, 7p, 8q, 9q, 10, 11p, 11q13, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18p, 20, Yp, and Xq were observed. The largest region affected by copy number loss was observed at chromosome 18q. Several of the observed genomic imbalances and their mapped genes were already associated with oral carcinoma and/or adverse prognosis, invasion, and metastasis in cancer. The most common rearrangements observed were translocations in the centromeric/near-centromeric regions. RARB, ESR1, and CADM1 genes were methylated and showed copy number losses, whereas TP73 and GATA5 presented with methylation and copy number gains. Thus, the current study presents a comprehensive characterization of the HSC-3 cell line; the use of this cell line may contribute to enriching the resources available for oral cancer research, especially for the testing of therapeutic agents.

Time of visible life on earth began before “thought” and perception of “Belief Systems”. When Erwin Schrödinger asked “What is life?” he was facing out into life. He did not ask “What is death?” as might have done a philosopher facing into life―inwards towards death. With the increasing power of man, over time, to provide himself with all that he wanted ; with increased knowledge ; and with material progress ; ratio and science in general, took to concentrating on the mathematically expressible properties of the universe―size, shape, motion, material, change―the “real world”. Questions considering the purpose of life ; what makes life of value or worth living, of beauty, love, identity, the human nexus (bonding), of “Being” were left to men of religion or to philosophers.Further, the acceleration of technology (applied knowledge), the world of Dirac’s quantum and mental models, proliferation of nuclear resources, and arguments that human beings are imperiling their own survival, urges reflection on the “middle ground” between Science and Religion―the “No-Man’s Land” ―that is the interest of this paper. Jung’s axiom that “Death is not the end” at least offers us continuity with Schrödinger’s problem, advanced now into reflections on Mind ; What is Mind? Is Consciousness eternal or instrumental in Mind? Is Intuition real? Wherein lies Faith? Have we already witnessed the “Power of the Negative” in the Stress Burden that contemporary life exacts, and How shall man go from Jung’s “valley” (Ego) ―war, tragedy, loss of life, agony to the “mountain top” (Self) where men―we ourselves―may face our collective unconsciousness?Anyone who believes that we can fully explain how the immaterial human mind is related to the material body is not fully informed.

This paper will explore Forster's concepts of religious meaning and the sacred in A Passage to India. It is generally acknowledged that the three sections of the novel: Mosque, Caves and Temple, stand for the three seasons in India, but they may also indicate conceptions of three systems of religious belief: the Christian/Moslem system that stresses allegorical understanding of opposites, like Good and Evil; the nihilist vision of nothingness and endless, meaningless repetition through time, (non-belief in this case) symbolized by the Marabar Caves; and the creation/destruction and all-embracing mysticism of Hinduism in the final part, Temple, which uses a religious festival to portray and dramatize the Hindu belief system. Forster presents these three belief systems as a way of exploring what it means to believe; he does not favor one system over any other; he may possibly be charting the evolution of religious belief in the individual as well as its development on wider levels of human consciousness. On a more mundane level, Forster takes up the question of the potential for mutual understanding between Indians and Anglo-Indians and appears to conclude that the two cultures were destined to remain divided in understanding each other until some future time of higher consciousness and tolerance. Forster offers gentle and ironic hope for the future in the person of Ralph, Mrs. Moore's son. In fact, Mrs. Moore herself is an embodiment of this hope in the present time of the novel: the sacral nature of creation is reaffirmed by her instinctive intuition; her sense of the sacred is Forster's affirmation that there is meaning in human existence-that the journey each of us makes through life is a journey toward God. In Whitman's words: O my brave soul! O farther sail! O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God? Oh Thou transcendent, Nameless, the fibre and the breath, Light of the light, shedding forth universes, thou centre of them, Thou mightier center of the true, the good, the loving, Thou moral, spiritual fountain-affection's source-thou reservoir, (O pensive soul of me-O thirst unsatisfied-waitest not there? Waitest not haply for us somewhere there the Comrade perfect?) Genetic control of growth habit and awnedness in common wheat was studied by the aneuploid and the conventional methods of analysis. Using the 21 monosomic lines of the spring variety, Chinese Spring, as female parents, crosses were made with seven varieties. In addition, diallel crosses were made among the seven varieties and Chinese Spring.<br>Growth habit was found to be controlled by genes belonging to three allelic series <i>Sg<sub>1</sub>, Sg<sub>2</sub></i> and <i>Sg</i><sub>3</sub>, located on chromosomes XVIII, IX and XIII, respectively. The <i>Sg</i><sub>1</sub> and <i>Sg</i><sub>2</sub> series appeared to have three alleles and the <i>Sg</i><sub>3</sub> series had two alleles; the alleles being <i>Sg<sub>1</sub>, Sg<sub>1</sub><sup>c</sup></i> and <i>sg<sub>1</sub>, Sg<sub>2</sub>, Sg<sub>2</sub><sup>c</sup></i> and <i>sg</i><sub>2</sub> and <i>Sg</i><sub>3</sub> and <i>sg</i><sub>3</sub> in order of dominance for each series.<br>Genotypes of the eight varieties are proposed, namely, <i>sg<sub>1</sub> sg<sub>2</sub> Sg</i><sub>3</sub> for Elgin, Kharkov and Jones Fife, <i>Sg<sub>1</sub><sup>c</sup> Sg<sub>2</sub><sup>c</sup> Sg</i><sub>3</sub> for Chinese Spring, <i>Sg<sub>1</sub><sup>c</sup> Sg<sub>2</sub> Sg<sub>3</sub></i> for Red Egyptian, <i>Sg<sub>1</sub> Sg<sub>2</sub><sup>c</sup> Sg</i><sub>3</sub> for S-615 and <i>Sg<sub>1</sub> Sg<sub>2</sub> sg<sub>3</sub></i> for Prelude and Red Bobs.<br>All winter varieties studied carried the typical winter habit genes, <i>sg</i><sub>1</sub> and <i>sg</i><sub>2</sub>. The gene <i>sg</i><sub>1</sub> was much more effective than <i>sg</i><sub>2</sub> in delaying heading. Spring varieties carried some of the less effective spring habit genes, <i>Sg<sub>1</sub><sup>c</sup>, Sg<sub>2</sub><sup>c</sup></i> or <i>sg</i><sub>3</sub> instead of the typical spring habit genes, <i>Sg<sub>1</sub>, Sg</i><sub>2</sub> or <i>Sg</i><sub>3</sub>.<br>Concerning awnedess, monosomic analysis revealed that awnlessness of Chinese Spring is ascribed to two inhibitors <i>Hd</i> and <i>B</i><sub>2</sub> on chromosomes VIII and X, respectively while that of Red Bobs to the presence of inhibitors <i>B</i><sub>1</sub> on chromosome IX and <i>B</i><sub>2</sub> and the absence of the <i>a</i><sub>1</sub> promotor on chromosome II; awnlettedness of Elgin and Jones Fife is controlled by the <i>B</i><sub>1</sub> gene; and awnedness of Prelude, Kharkov, S-615 and Red Egyptian is due to absence of all inhibitors. Conventional analysis confirmed the results obtained by monosomic analysis and indicated that an inhibitor on chromosome XVI of Chinese Spring affected F<sub>2</sub> segregation of awnedness when crosses were made between Chinese Spring and other varieties.
