This article reviewed three help-seeking issues in counseling and in clinical psychology research: (1) help-seeking processes, (2) facilitation of help-seeking, and (3) help-seeking and adjustment. Based on a review of previous literature about help-seeking processes and the facilitation of help-seeking, the importance of integrating perspectives that combine theoretical models of help-seeking, factors influencing help-seeking, programs facilitating help-seeking, and clinical practice was indicated. With regard to help-seeking and adjustment, help-seeking may not always serve an adaptive function and practices that aim to facilitate help-seeking have several considerations. Finally, the conclusion of this article is that future studies should consider the impact of sociocultural factors on help-seeking.

The distinction between sex and gender differences is very ambiguous in the Japanese language as discussed in this special issue. It is important that we use these two terms correctly, i.e., sex differences have a biological basis, and gender differences are based on social behaviors and conventions. Within this special issue, the distinction between sex differences and gender differences are presented by several authors. Sasaki emphasizes the usefulness of sex/gender limitation analysis which could redefine sex/gender differences. Morinaga tries to explain women’s relative inferiority in the fields of science and mathematics by the stereotypic misnomer “not being good at mathematics”. Suzuki reviews the psychological factors, such as gender role attitudes that affect gender inequality. Yokota examines the popular “male warrior” hypothesis in evolutionary psychology through new findings in both experimental psychology and archeology. Numazaki’s article explains the origins of sex differences through both cultural and evolutionary approaches. Each article advances our understanding of the origins of sex/gender differences. On the other hand, the studies that redefine the origins of both sexist societies and institutions and promote ways to change gender differences, should be further evaluated. To that end, more in depth interactions among behavioral geneticists, evolutionary psychologists, and social psychologists are needed.

Network analysis for psychopathology, introduced by Kashihara (2019), has the potential to greatly transform the research and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This paper discusses how we integrate the literature on cognitive and clinical psychology into the network analysis. Most network analysis in psychiatric disorders has used the data obtained from questionnaires, although incorporating the experimental tasks used in cognitive and clinical psychology into the assessment is worthy for clarifying the mechanisms that underlie psychiatric disorders. However, some issues arise when the data obtained from the experimental tasks are used in network analysis. These barriers indicate new issues that cognitive and clinical psychologists need to solve in the future.
