This paper reports the establishment and practical results of the first trial of the spacecraft thermal design hands-on training program for the general public. This training is part of the two-week educational program that aims to find and grow up the potential people who are interested in commercial space utilization. The thermal design and its evaluation are some of the most difficult points for novices of the space industry. The program consists of the basic classroom lecture focusing on the differences from the thermal design of the normal commercial equipment and two kinds of hands-on training helping the students understanding. The hands-on training aims to evaluate thermal radiation properties. The training consists of the measurement with the standard instruments and thermal-vacuum test. The effectiveness of the whole training program is evaluated based on the questionnaire results from the students.

Traditionally in student experiments we have taught students technical knowledge and skills which are necessary to accomplish their experiments. In this traditional way of teaching, it has not been essential to develop engineers with communication skills and leadership. But recently such engineers become more and more important to tackle problems in team projects. In addition, ability to determine priorities among various complex subjects by using optimal method is needed for engineers these days. From this point of view, I have designed and implemented alternative student experiment programs based on behavioral, cognitive and situated learning theories to help students develop these skills and abilities. And according to the results of my investigation, I designed new curriculum for integrated education from high school level to university level at Toyama National College of Technology. This paper introduces these experiment programs I have developed and discusses educational effects and necessary improvements of these programs.

PBL (Project Based Learning or Problem Based Learning) has attracted attention as a method to develop human resources capable of solving problems with teams. PBL is a learning method to solve problems with a project type team. PBL is an educational method that can effectively acquire problem solving power, creativity and ability to help each other in a team. In PBL, how to evaluate educational purpose quantitatively is an important point. This paper introduces examples of how I evaluate the educational purpose of PBL.

Quick globalization increases the necessity of higher communication skill for everybody. However, in reality, modern tools such as mobile and internet spoil the face-to-face communication ability among young people. In this paper, reviewing related books of communication skill in conjunction with speaking, hearing, reading and writing is first done on English as well as on Japanese. Parallel to this, self experience-based method for intensifying communication skill is described. Emphasizing points for improving each communication skill are concretely proposed in the body.

The Asia Steel Bridge Competition has provided opportunities to learn bridge design, construction and so on for civil engineering students, and therefore the students can integrate their knowledge through participating the Competition; structural planning, designing, drawing, manufacturing, construction skills, presentation through the process of constructing small-size steel bridges. The competition also provides opportunities to exchange experience and ideas from different cultures for the students. This paper presents engineering education and its future prospect for Gifu University’s civil engineering students in this decade through the participation in Asia Steel Bridge Competition.

IoT has been getting a lot of attention in the global industry. Recent education programs also adopt information technologies such as IoT and ICT to improve the teaching method. However, education of KOSEN is desired to teach how to realize IoT and ICT, not only to utilize information technology. In this education program, we gave lectures about social needs of IoT and the management method of a project first. Based on the lecture, students investigated real information applications and then proposed their new technical seeds of information applications independently. Some projects were launched to realize the technical seeds. To move their project forward, they were able to use a virtual workshop in National Institute of Technology, Gunma College. Finally, students discussed their final products within the projects, and then we evaluated deliverables and processes of their projects. The virtual workshop includes visualization of existing equipment, which is placed in laboratories and facilities of our college, by network management. We connected the hardware and software resources to our college network and rebuilt the resources to the virtual workshop which was shared across our college. Moreover, we introduced new network-compatible IoT products other than existing equipment. This paper describes our education program to nurture IoT engineers in Gunma College.

In this paper, we implement a new style of manufacturing education on the basis of internships with local businesses as well as by using an interactive skills transfer and skill training system. Our system integrates virtual reality (VR) technology and information communications technology (ICT) which were developed at Saitama University. We have created an interactive technology and skills-sharing network linking the knowledge resources and technical resources of our university with the skill resources of local businesses. Our objective is for our students to learn the skills of the local businesses and their business needs and to be able to effectively acquire knowledge and skills for manufacturing. We report our findings from performing practical training that uses specialized knowledge acquired from lectures combined with VR technology with the objective to provide students with more thorough skills. Our undergraduate curriculum provides practical education that links experiments, practical training, and lectures, in mechanical engineering experiments, mechanical engineering seminars, mechanical engineering practical training, and internships.

One important subject in basic drafting class is ensuring that the students understand drafting rules based on Japanese industrial standards. Recently, instead of hand drafting, 2D or 3D CAD has been introduced to drafting practice classes in engineering education. However, there are few reports on CAD’ s educational effects. Thus, to compare the efficacy of CAD and hand drawing, we tested two groups of students who took 2D CAD and hand drafting, respectively. First, three question forms were compared on the required time to answer; then, the judgment of understanding and mistake-searching tests were conducted. The results showed a significant difference between the two classes in the percentage of correct answers on some questionnaire items. The lecture in which the percentage of correct answers was low was improved, such that it might explain the benefit of using concrete figures. After implementing improvements in teaching methods, the final examination showed significant educational effect.

Minute paper is one of reflection techniques carried out at the end of a day’s lesson. We implement it with quiz in mathematics class to promote fixing the knowledge and ability to solve mathematical problems. In every lesson, students take a quiz referring minute paper they wrote in previous lesson. We throw up the method is helpful for student to reflect what they learned in last lesson. Also we categorize contents of minute paper, and study its impact to student achievement. Analysis of the contents and student performance in examination is useful to give appropriate support to students.

The aim of Engineering Mathematics Test (EMaT) is to make sure what essentials in curriculum of Engineering Mathematics is, and to assess university students’ core academic competence and achievement of Engineering Mathematics, helping assurance of students’ academic ability. It is useful for professors to evaluate teaching effect of the classes, and this evaluation would help them improve curricula. Scores can be available for both graduate school entrance examinations and employment tests, leading to selecting persons with basic academic ability in Engineering Mathematics. The scope includes fundamentals in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Probability and Statistics. It is open to all students free of charge, and is annually given once in December. In 2007, 2,396 students from 35 universities took EMaT, and the total number of students who have taken EMaT in these 5 years is 6,240.

The basic program of general education of engineers is based on European culture from the times of ancient Greece to the 20th century. However, when considering its results, such as colonialism and the World Wars, this system can be said to lack the most important goal of “culture,” which is “to accept the existence of others.” In particular, the cooperation of European culture and engineering has ravaged the weaker cultures and is currently causing severe environmental problems in nature. Therefore, when considering the general education of engineers, it is indispensable to doubt European scholarship and to analyze what is lacking in current Japanese educational programs. Then, it is desirable that the relationship between the mind and the body, the characteristics of the Japanese climate, and the essence of Japanese artisanship be taken into consideration. It may also be beneficial to study the Ainu culture for its qualities as a peaceful culture.

In this research, I showed the trial that I conducted in the classes of 3 subjects in Chiba Institute of Technology for promoting the interest in society, and analyzed the short tests of basic knowledge and the questionnaires of the class evaluation and the interest in society. As a result, it is revealed that the trial has positive effect in promoting the basic knowledge necessary for working people and the interest in society. In addition, it is revealed that the trial is effective in strengthening the linkage among the items of the class evaluation and the interest in society.

To better utilize evaluations in higher education, it is necessary to share the methods of reviewing reliability and validity of examination scores and grades, and to accumulate and share data for confirming results. Before the GPA system is first introduced into a university or college, the reliability of examination scores and grades, especially for essay examinations, must be assured. Validity is a complicated concept, so should be assured in various ways, including using professional audits, theoretical models, and statistical data analysis. Because individual students and teachers are continually improving, using evaluations to appraise their progress is not always compatible with using evaluations in appraising the implementation of accountability in various departments or the university overall. To better utilize evaluations and improve higher education, evaluations should be integrated into the current system by sharing the vision of an academic learning community and promoting interaction between students and teachers based on sufficiently reliable and validated evaluation tools.

Quick globalization of human activity of economy has made English the most important international communication tool in the world past two decades. Taking the fact that the people speaking English as a mother language is less than ten percents of the total world population, into account, it is obviously to be noted that almost all the people using other language with different cultural background can basically truly be communicated not in English but in individual language. In this respect, learning multiple languages leads to be fascinated by different national culture and results in further enjoyment of one′s life. This is actually demonstrated in terms of the author′s experience in this paper.

Job seeker training for six months for 15 members was performed by Polytechnic Center Kanto in Yokohama from January, 2006. The injection mold was completed by having made training and a training subject correspond. And employment of all the members who consist of 90 persons during the 6 periods was completed. Furthermore, job seeker training for ten months for ten members was performed by the Polytechnic University from January, 2010. Then, The difficult injection mold was completed and all the members were employed. This paper discussed job seeker training and an employment result.

The education project, Educational Network for Practical Information Technologies, called enPiT, consists of four different important field in information technologies of information security, cloud, embedding system, business application, covers 100 universities, and more than 1,300 students have joined in enPiT. The difficulties and challenging points in enPiT exist in rich diversities of students, who are originally educated in different universities with different curriculums. This is why it is important to develop a measure of effectiveness of our education systems. In enPiT, we evaluate effectiveness by two ways of each practical skills and PROG test. In this paper, we report how to evaluate the effectiveness of practical education developed in the education project enPiT.

This article introduces extensive reading (ER) as an approach to improve fundamental communication skills in English of reluctant EFL learners : average Japanese engineering students. It is distinct from concurrent translation approach from a perspective that the learners use English instead of Japanese to grasp the meaning of what they read and enjoy reading. In the ER program at Toyota National College of Technology, many students developed more positive attitude toward English, increased their reading speed, and achieved higher TOEIC scores, which was compared to those of the students before this ER program was introduced. Comparison between three groups of the students showed strong correlation between their TOEIC scores and the reading amount.
