Extracurricular activities are important for students’ learning and development. This paper reviews previous research on extracurricular activities and summarizes the learning and development of university students in extracurricular activities. It also discusses future research topics on extracurricular activities.

Japanese industry has been encouraged to transform from a mode of ‘recovery’ to one of 'front-runner' in effective innovation and creation of new businesses and markets based in accomplishments of basic research. Graduate School of Technology Management at Ritsumeikan University strives to not only offer knowledge and skills, but also business experiences to its students so that they may acquire the abilities to discover and solve practical problems logically, analytically and systematically. To achieve these aims, it has inaugurated the Ritsumeikan University Practicum Program by enhancing existing internship programs. Under the guidance of its faculties, this program will allow its students a chance to set and solve actual problems in real world business environments.

Niigata Prefecture is long from north to south, therefore its gastronomic culture is also various. The daylight hours of summer are long and suitable for rice cultivation. Since there is little temperature variability during winter, it is suitable for carrying out fermentation management of “Moromi” . Water within the prefecture has few minerals, and is fit for the low-temperature long-term fermentation of the Niigata sake conjointly with the climate condition. The Niigata sake brewed under such conditions - “TANREI” - it is expressed that it is the quality of sake. The new food “Sakasuke” which fermented sake lees with abundant nutrition in lactic acid bacteria was developed. This “Sakasuke” had the action which stops the allergic rhinitis-like symptoms of a mouse, and the lipid improvement action of a rat. Now, Niigata sake breweries are performing product development which uses “Sakasuke” , and a cake, liqueur, sweet drink made from fermented rice, and curry are already marketed.

The aviation industry, which is faced with a fierce global competition, is expected to become one of the major industries in Japan. Thus, students who major in aeronautics are required to obtain not only a wide range of knowledge but also practical skills in order to play an active role in the aviation segments. To this end, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of the University of Tokyo started a new program that introduced a business simulation and the negotiation theory to aeronautics education. This paper discusses the details of the program, its purpose and results, as well as the future works.

This study aims to evaluate how satisfaction of technical training courses in in-house education was influenced by comprehension, goal achievement and training design factors: difficulties, trainers′ instruction ways, training materials and training volumes. Covariance structure analysis was conducted on questionnaire answer data from approximately 16,000 participants of training courses, which were classified into lecture and practical training types in comparison of face-to-face classes with online classes. The analysis revealed that goal achievement had a significant effect on satisfaction, and comprehension had an indirect effect on satisfaction through goal achievement. The influence of the training design factors on satisfaction, comprehension and goal achievement differed significantly with training types. In particular, the difficulties showed no significant effect on comprehension in online lecture-type trainings. This indicates subjective difficulties of online class participants may be different from those of face-to-face class participants.

The purpose of this report is to exclude risk factors based on the instance of Hiyari Hatto (near-miss accidents) experienced by school personnel and students and to make the environment in which students can participate safely in the class and extracurricular activities. By means of the risk assessment and KYT (training for predicting dangers, K : Kiken, Y : Yochi, T : Training) , it has been considered how the college should control the students′ experiments. As a result, the students have been able to work on the experiments without affecting the school facilities and the students′ working site, and the number of injuries has decreased.

Elementary textbooks on quantum chemistry published for the last dozen years in Japan were surveyed. In the most of the textbooks, Heitler-London theory or simple linear atomic combination-molecular orbital theory is still used to explain the nature of the chemical bond of a hydrogen molecule, which theories were criticized in 1960s. Physical meanings on several problems that many students may have questions were not described in these books. Some of the problems were answered in this paper. Desirable textbooks on quantum chemistry which fit with times were proposed.

This paper deals with the educational effects of co-curricular activities in Kanazawa Institute of Technology. We surveyed the differences between two student groups, participating the co-curricular activities or not, from two viewpoints of students’ academic achievements and generic skills such as communication skill, planning skill, and stress control or resilience skill. After statistical analysis, we find that the students who get involved in the co-curricular activities have better grade point average of academic achievement than the other students, but participating the activities does not affect academic achievements. We also find the collateral evidences that co-curricular activities can foster generic skills of students.

There are reports that English text typed with unreadable fonts is more memorable than that with readable fonts. The purpose of the textbook is to reinforce the reader’s understanding. Therefore, the unreadable fonts can be better than readable ones. We investigated the effect of font type on the memory and comprehension of typed text in Japanese. We found that the comprehension is better when unreadable font types are applied except that the text was written only in Chinese characters. Our finding can be applied for various educational scene.

In this paper, we compare Attainment Test for Mathematics and Engineering Mathematics Test (EMaT) carried out by National Institute of Technology, Kure College from 2015 to 2017. We found significant positive correlations between them, implying that academic development of mathematics in Kure College successfully connects to engineering mathematics in university. However, we also found that approximately half of the students do not reach sufficiently high learning level for the engineering mathematics in university. Moreover, differences of scores among four departments are found to be significant. Considering these results, we suggest some educational plans to improve the learning level for the engineering mathematics in university.

Three years of extensive reading lessons have improved engineering students′ reading and listening skills in English. The average TOEIC score has increased to 441 points, and the relative numbers of students of lower scores than 350 points have decreased to 14% in the third year when the median reading amount of easy-to-read English texts is about a half million words. The critical success factors are the reading amount and the easiness of English texts read especially in the first term. When students read extremely easy English texts with the help of pictures, they can finally avoid the translation into Japanese and grasp the meaning of the texts directly in English

World Solar Challenge(以下WSCと呼ぶ)は1987年より,オーストラリアで3年毎に開催されているソーラーカーの世界大会である。本校は1996年の第4回大会に初めて出場し,完走10位,2人乗りクラス3位という輝かしい成果をおさめた。チームは高専5年生を中心として,4年生,研究生,OB,教員の13名が企画から,設計および製作を行なった。この間,多くの在校生や卒業生らの積極的な協力が得られたことは,学校という共同体に身を置く者にとって,この上ない喜びである。ここでは,新しく製作したソーラーカーについての概要とレースに出場した経過および記録について報告する。

This paper proposes the design and implementation of the education-oriented μITRON4.0 specification operating system on 8-bit PIC microcontrollers. In order to execute multi-task operatings in their small-capacity memories, we have adopted a shared stack structure. The primary purpose of our system development is to get an effective teaching material for RTOS educations in our university, so that students can easily understand the dynamics and mechanism of μITRON. Therefore, we have constructed a low-cost training environment with enough logging and debugging capabilities for the multi-task operation analysis in itself. In addition, we have developed the lessons that utilize this system listed as follows : “Practice of Embedded Software” and “Retraining of vocational training instructor”. Their questionnairy results answered by these students show positive evaluations in average for all lessons, which lead to the educational effectiveness of our system.

In 2002, the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering was established as a small institution in a Boston suburb specified by undergraduate engineering education. The college set up its targets to motivate students to cultivate a lifelong learning, and illuminates them with engineering design, interdisciplinarity and teamworking. These were not brand-new concepts in reforming engineering education, but somewhat difficult to realize because of the interferences such as the traditions and customs. The notable features of its curriculum are summarized as follows ; the project-based learning (PBL) are introduced to a half of courses, the engineering design education is placed across the curriculum, and the Senior Capstone Program in Engineering (SCOPE, a year-long PBL program where students collaborate with industrial partners) was set as the culmination of learning.

工学備理教育では,(1)近代工学が社会に与えた精神界への打撃,労働の追放,環境の破壊などの事実内容についての講義,(2)工学倫理の自然科学的合理性,工学の社会に対する合目的性,工学の一方向性などの考え方についての講義,及び(3)原子爆弾投下,エイズ問題,遺伝子操作による動物の飼育などの主要な事例研究と演習,さらに(4)工学倫理組合の結成,労働形態の変更など社会生活への働きかけの可否などの講義と討論をもとに構成するのが適当であると考えられる。また,工学的内容を持つ事例の講義とその倫理学的哲学的内容を教授することが必要な工学倫理教育では複数の教育者の共同教育が必要であろう。

This paper follows the author’ s special lecture, “Efforts to Improve Research Capability at Hiroshima University: From the Perspective of Academic Diversity and Innovation Creation,” at the 71st Annual Conference of the Japan Society for Engineering Education, held on September 6, 2023, at the Higashi Hiroshima Campus of Hiroshima University. It reviews recent efforts by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI) of the Cabinet Office to improve research capability and describes its efforts of Hiroshima University. In addition, the status of engineering education in Japan and expectations for gendered innovation are introduced.

Liberal arts education is attracting great interest in term of source of innovation to comprehend social needs and acceptance of technologies. However, the engineering has not been sufficiently included in the conventional liberal arts education, despite of its significance in modern society. To incorporate engineering in the liberal arts education, the following approaches are discussed. Engineers should learn social science and humanities to understand social needs and to enhance communication skills, and acquire generic engineering principle which is common in all engineering field. General public should develop technological literacy to ascertain the possibilities and limits of technology. Public, including engineers, should know nature of engineering to communicate each other, and obtain ability to identify the risk and benefit of technology.
