Engineers and general workers have been internationalized by getting jobs around the world according to the recent economic globalization. Six countries signed the Washington Accord in 1989, which recognizes the substantial equivalence of the accreditation systems for the engineering education programs among the organizations of the signatories. In 2001, Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education was established and now is advancing to join the Washington Accord as a member. As for the development of products and manufacturing, not only scientists and engineers but also technicians are indispensable. The higher vocational education for technicians is now becoming important for the technicians to play a role in the borderless manufacturing world. In Japan, the Polytechnic University and Colleges make higher vocational education for engineers and technicians under the authority of the administration of Health, Labor and Welfare. In the present paper, the higher educational training programs for engineers and technicians being made in the Polytechnic College are examined and compared with the standard programs in Canada in order to search the possibility of multinational agreement in these fields.

Freshmen learn a lot of important formula and theorems in fluid dynamics. It is often observed that their understanding and application of those in conventional lecture are unsatisfied. In order to overcome such undesirable situation, many experiments related to fluid-dynamics contents were demonstrated intending promotion of understanding on the formula and theorems lectured. The present paper introduces a few contents of the lecture and reports the results of questionnaire filled out at the end of the lecture.

We are discussing about many aspects of research integrity of individual scientist, who faces the globalization of research ethics in the traditional culture and custom of Japan. Topics are scientific misconduct (fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism) in writing paper and presenting research results. Managements of research material, research record, grant money, authorship, and conflict of interest are also analyzed and discussed. Finally, we make 5 recommendations to improve research integrity in Japan.

この研究は,システム開発の上流工程に携わるシステムエンジニア(以下SEと略記)を育成するための教育の目標や,カリキュラムとその実施方法の開発を目的としている。ここで目指している教育の特色としては,システム設計技法や技術上の知識の授与教育ではなく,上級のSEにとくに要求される基盤能力の育成に焦点を当てていることである。<BR>この研究は,1988年に産学協同の研究会として発足した「情報処理教育研究会」(事務局:ECCオープンキャンパスセンター)を活動の中心として行われているもので,著者らは現在その研究会の幹事を務めている。研究会では,研究成果の実践として,1991年よりSEなどソフトウェア技術者を対象として,毎年1回「上級SE育成セミナー」を実施してきた。ここでは,われわれのこのような研究のアプローチ,セミナーの実施結果などを中心に報告する。

In order to improve students’ motivation, the SIEM (School of Information Environment Method) which is the education method for the introduction of the computer programming education was developed. We focus on students’ motivation, and we have measured students’ motivation as the educational effects. After the SIEM was developed in the School of Information Environment, it applied to introduction to the computer programming education in the School of Engineering Evening Division at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It is effective for the improvement of students’ motivation. By adding the Customer Satisfaction Analysis to the SIEM Analysis, it was able to clarify the priority level of the SIEM assessment item. In this paper, we describe results of the Customer Satisfaction Analysis.

独創的な科学技術者を育てるための将来の日本の教育制度をここに提案する。独創性は個人の差を認め,それを助長する事により達成される。米国が1957年のスプートニクの時に覚醒し採択した英才教育を日本が今から採択するべきである。その内容の重要な点は:(1)大学新入生選抜には個人の特技を優先的に考慮する。(2)小学校より大学卒業までセンターテストを専門家を集めた常設組織で作る。大学入学筆記試験は年数回行う。(3)筆記試験問題は個人の進度の差を測る事が出来る様広範囲にし,一つの科目に優れた学生に有利な様にする。(4)学年制度は廃止し個人の能力によりどの学年でも入れるようにする。高校の上級では資格ある学生に大学の教科を教える。(5)大学学部の募集人数は大学が任意に決める。(6)大学の質と水準を透明化し大学問の転学編入を容易にする。(7)政府は個人特技競争会の公平な運用,奨学金分配,各大学の評価の透明性の維持などの役割を担う。(8)ハイテクのための特殊税を賦課し,その収入を奨学金と企業の研究所や大学への助成金として使う。

This paper describes an approach for project management education using role-play training over eight years from 2004 to 2012 and has a view of project management education in the future. In order to quantitatively know the project management skill levels, we have proposed on-line group work training system, which can gather the behavioral records of each learner during role-play. In order for a learner who has no practical experience for managing a project to be able to arrive at correct solution through the correct orderly manner, we have developed a software agent when necessary provides appropriate advice or a hint. Effectiveness of project management education using role-play training and a method for evaluating project management skill levels could be presented.

In 2004, Tohoku University started a new introductory experimental science course for freshmen. This course was intended to aid students in thinking logically and in understanding the fundamental concepts of natural phenomena. We combined physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences and set up a five themes entitled, “Life, Energy, Earth and Environment, Materials, and Science and Culture” . More than 1,800 students, including 810 engineering students, of all the science-related subjects attended these classes. Of the students taking the classes, 62% were favorable to them in 2004 and 68% in 2007, whilst only 50% of the students were positive about the old course in 2003.

This paper reports trials to record all possible lectures and to deliver on demand the recorded video contents in the Department of Information Systems at Tottori University of Environmental Studies. Main features of the efforts by the department are summarized as follows : (1) Every possible lecture is recorded and delivered on demand. (2) The activity is done at reasonable initial and running costs. (3) Voluntary students and teachers work together as technical and management staff without university staff. For the fiscal years 2004 and 2005, more than 1000 lectures, each of which lasted 90 minutes were recorded successfully, and the total running cost was less than 2-million yen, including the maintenance cost and payment. In this paper, we describe how we realized the three features, and analyze the details of the costs.

Project-based learning (PBL) is effective for teaching students about the engineering design process, as it leads to higher educational effectiveness among lower-grade students. In this paper, we introduced an original PBL program that involved the use of an autonomous mobile robot in a rescue robot contest, and we assessed its educational effectiveness among several categories of students who participated in the contest. The results demonstrated that essential abilities for information engineering could be acquired by participating in the contest, and both the PBL program and contest provided a good educational environment for lower-grade students.

The Department of Control and Sysytems Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, has been focusing on creativity in its undergraduate education for more than 40 years. The current curriculum is featuring 2 RoboCon-style subjects, in which students are assigned to create original robots to attend a competition. One subject is offered for 2nd year students and its main objective is to activate their creativity. The other is for 3rd year sudents aiming at development of team creativity. In this paper, after introducing the concepts of the curriculum, the latter subject called “Creative Design of Control Systems” is described in detail. Its objectives, outlines, and various efforts to teach and to operate the class are explained taking the 2005 class as an example.

Learning computer programming requires students to deal with different variations of assignments. Instructors, on the other hand, have difficulty giving students many assignments due to time constraints for marking the work of students. This study presents an online judge system to check the students' assignments so that they can be provided with more assignments. In this system, a client doesn't have to build a special environment for students to learn. We implemented a function to detect illicit copies on the system and announced the fact about the function to students. 125 students who had used the system received a questionnaire about the detection function and 80% of them replied positively that the system can prevent illicit copying, with 92% saying that the system is effective in learning computer programming.

構造力学は建設技術者が安全な構造物を設計したり施工したりするのに必要な重要な科目の1つである.そのため,広島工業大学工学部建設工学科では,クラス分割をするなどの教育に効果があると思われるような対策を講じてきたが,構造力学は相変わらず学生にとって理解しにくい科目になっている.この原因には,目に見えない構造部材の変形や内力といった力学現象を想像する能力が乏しいことが考えられる.そこで,理論を中心にした「座学」の中に,「模型実験」と「コンピュータシミュレーション」を導入して,力と変形を目に見える形にビジュアル化することによって,学生の力学の理解と学習意欲の促進を図ろうとするシステムを開発した.このシステムは学生にも力学の理解に役立つものとして受け入れられており,今後の力学教育に本システムが有効なものとなることが期待される.

In the Era of global economy, international standards becomes to play more important roles. WTO/TBT agreement agreed in 1995 requires that the member countries should procure products and services that conform to global standards. So, activities for standardization should be strengthened more. For this, education about standardization should be strengthened more and more in universities, companies and organizations. In this paper, it is made clear the situation of education about standardization in worldwide universities. In the second, important subjects about standardization are extracted. In the third, design of education about global standardization is made clear by introducing the new concept of education course groups consisting of plural courses that offer lump of knowledge essentially required for global standardization, Then, a specific education program about global standardization is designed by combining the courses of universities of Osaka, Waseda, Technology Malaysia and Geneva.

College of Systems Engineering and Science, Shibaura Institute of Technology was founded in 1991. Each department in the college has delivered specific major education and shared common interdisciplinary education of systems engineering. The knowledge and skills in systems engineering including project management are necessary for engineers who solve technical as well as social and interdisciplinary problems. We define our interdisciplinary education by emphasizing systems approach with interdisciplinary communication and teamwork skill for solving real problems in society. The main part of interdisciplinary education consists of three lectures and three Project-Based Learning (PBL) for mixed students of five departments. In this paper, learning outcomes design, course design, execution, and assessment are described.

The purpose of our study was to examine the effectiveness of learning assessments with rubric in architectural and machizukuri educations. Analysis of validation of the learning assessments with rubric in class management and educational effects were made using analysis of the result of self-diagnos, questionnaires, and interview. As a result, the original method with Learning Assessments was found to have the function to make things more available for Learning Support to each Student in Group Learning. Our study revealed that there educational effects which developed students′ understanding in community welfare plan, leads effective self-reflection.

The knowledge and skills in systems engineering are necessary for engineers and students in all engineering fields. We introduced leadership and human skill education with interdisciplinary communication. Leadership education in conjunction with lectures, role-play, real experience and pseudo experience with the use of simulator provides students with experience as well as knowledge, and accelerates the process of acquiring leadership skills. We introduce a new educational approach which links a variety of pseudo experience with real actions of students in university research and engineering activities. The education links knowledge, pseudo experience and real action to improve students’ leadership. The learning outcomes of education were assessed by rubric and learning portfolio.

This paper discusses contents and results of a new graduate course "English for Engineers and Scientists" given at School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. This course is a new attempt to develop English communication expertise for engineering graduate students: how to write technical papers and how to make technical presentations in English. For these purposes, differences in the writing styles and in the sentence structures of English and Japanese are stressed: conclusions come first in English versus conclusions come last in Japanese; the three-step style of introduction, body, and conclusion in English versus the four-step style of ki-sho-ten-ketsu in Japanese. In addition, proper styles of technical papers (rhetoric) and related grammatical points are discussed. Technical presentation course consists of four-week lecture and seven-week practice session. In the lecture, essential points of technical presentations in English are discussed in detail, and in the practice session students′ presentation skills are improved through guidance and instructions given by native-speaker moderators. The class evaluation results show that most students have obtained necessary skills of technical presentation, indicating that the combined course of lecture and practice session is essential for training students to make better technical presentations in English.
