This tutorial explains principles of writing papers for transactions of JSiSE. In this paper, we first roughly classify the research conducted in the research field of information and systems in education, introduce the paper categories of JSiSE, and explain the guidelines for selecting the paper category. Then, we will introduce principles for clarifying research questions, which are important points for papers to be accepted, and introduce concrete examples of research questions by picking up from practical papers that have been accepted. In addition, by introducing the editorial board’s underlying philosophy of reviewing papers in more detail, we hope authors utilize it for writing papers.

Education/learning in network communities involves activities in which the members acquire, share, publish and create knowledge by joining in the communities to communicate with each other. The main topic addressed in this review paper is to classify fundamental technologies for scaffolding and promoting such education/learning activities. The key idea on this classification is to organize the fundamental technologies in each type of network community, with which social capital in the community increases, and with which the sustainability of the education/learning activities could be maximized.

We developed a comprehensive learning-support system for Scratch, a visual programming language. It provides automatic assessment of computational thinking concepts such as conditional statements, loops, data, and parallelism in order to develop students’ programming skills. It also provides more than 60 sample functions that are commonly used in Scratch projects, and analyzes automatically which functions are used in a project. The system could be used in supporting mentors and learners of programming learning, and analyzing a lot of programs to understand how learners master programming.

Institutional Research (IR) has been receiving much attention in Japanese higher education. In order to guarantee the educational quality of university, it has been discussed how to utilize the educational big data. In this paper, it is considered to construct models of students' learning states using large-scale students' learning data collected through the baccalaureate degree program based on some machine learning methods. In this research, data in 5 years are utilized in order to investigate the generalization ability of the models, and the performances of some machine learning methods are compared. From the experimental results, it is indicated that the models of students' learning states with high generalization ability can be constructed. Its capability of application to enrollment management is also discussed from experimental results.

Most of the previous research about ICT utilization in Chinese education and learning has mainly been focused on e-learning material development, content development, and quantitative analysis of learners’ grammatical knowledge. There have been few researches that analyzed the effectiveness of distance learning on high school Chinese classes. In this study, Chinese classes were practiced in high school with blended learning interactional design, which utilized the distance learning between Japan and China. In addition, this practice was based on the theories of human centered design and motivational design for learning. This study aimed to explore the learners’ learning experience and its interpretation by analyzing the learning achievement of learners with the mixed methods.

In this article, learning and other different activities in school education were explained from the perspective of self theories. The self-other relationship is the basis of self theories. It was explained from different angles: the structures of daily conversation, the etymology of the self, and the mechanism of early childhood in human development. For school education, self theories suggested that learning requires the self-other relationship: practically learning through dialogue. Last, constructing personal lives was also explained through the multiple self and the dialogical self. As the extent of modernity in society progressed drastically, people’s individualization and individuation were also developing. These social changes created career education in school curricula, which changed students’ learning: it was not only for acquiring knowledge and skills but also for forming their selves for the future.

This paper describes an evaluation to verify the reliability, sensitivity, and effectiveness of the checklist. An improvement of the checklist is also described. The checklist, based on flow theory, was developed as a support tool for teachers and courseware designers to redesign learning materials and environments from the view point of motivational design. After the literature review of the applied research on flow theory to the educational field, it is found that there are few practical tools proposed. This paper focuses on the formative evaluation of the flow-theory-based checklist, which has been already proposed, and the verification of its reliability, sensitivity, and effectiveness. To carry out the whole evaluation experiment, the e-learning materials were developed and the preliminary experiment, the expert review, and the evaluation experiment were performed. As a result, the checklist is found to be practical enough and the future tasks are clarified.

The authors have developed a learning support system based on question-posing by learners and have applied it to a distributed asynchronous environment since 2006. Based on the results of application, they enhanced the system. In this paper, they analyzed the results of application in terms of effectiveness of the system to a distributed asynchronous environment. As the analytical results, they found the learners who actively posed questions marked higher score of the final examination than the learners who inactively posed, and that the learners who actively posed high quality questions increased the score of the midterm examination to the score of the final examination than the learners who inactively posed. In addition, they found providing the system motivated learners to learn.

This article describes the results of a study that reveals previously hidden facts from a large amount of behavioral data currently being collected in the educational field (educational big data) by individually excluding those factors that affect human behavior on the basis of cognitive psychological findings. Furthermore, actual cases are presented to show that the information revealed in this study can be a driving force for changing the learning behavior of individual children, and consequently solve various educational problems. In order to extract meaningful information from the big data collected from human behavior, a deep understanding of human behavior is essential. Conversely, with a deep understanding of humans, big data that are a simple mass of information could become an abundant source of information.
