This study aimed to clarify target groups of dislike feeling of Japanese people and analyze elements of the feeling. Web survey was conducted among 1,000 Japanese adults, whose ages ranged from 20 to 69 years old. The results showed that approximately two thirds of the survey participants could report target group(s) of dislike feeling, and Japanese new religions, three neighboring countries and the Islamic State were mainly reported as target groups. Sex and age differences were small in categories of reported target groups, and male’s hostile commitments for the groups were relatively higher than female’s. Sensitivities for threat in environment related to negative attitude for the target groups and the relationships were higher in males than in females. These results were consistent with general results of previous studies.

In this article, results of studies on the process of maintaining anger are described, and experimental research examining the effectiveness of the structured writing method for reducing anger is reviewed. Our research has indicated that the key factor in the process of maintaining anger is “the sense of unintegration of thoughts.” Anger is prolonged by this sense, because it mediates avoidance behaviors and recurrent thinking. Our research has also indicated that to reduce anger, it is crucial to integrate and organize thoughts about anger-evoking events by eliciting “perspective taking,” and the “need for self-change.” Moreover, it has been demonstrated that “the structured writing method,” developed on the basis of research into the process of maintaining anger, was more effective for reducing anger than traditional expressive writing methods. Participants tend to change how they talk about an event with others and decrease the number of negative words after engaging in structured writing. These findings suggest that taking various perspectives, including other’s feeling, and possible self-improvements into consideration in the structured writing method facilitates reappraising the relationship between the self and others, which in turn inhibits intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intergenerational processes of maintaining anger.

In his Critique of the Power of Judgment, Immanuel Kant argued that only the idea of “common sense” can justify the demand that one’s aesthetic judgment of taste be universally valid for all. This essay presents the interpretation of this Kantian common sense as the emotional or sentimental foundation of human sociability or community. The common sense, as an external sense of community, has its transcendental grounding in the harmony of human cognitive faculties (imagination and understanding) that each person feels internally. Then the common sense which has that grounding would contribute to the three moments of human life in a community: the aesthetic autonomy of each person, the plurality and communicability of our judgments, and the idea of universal consensus in the whole community.

Recently there have been accumulating evidences on the mechanism of some emotions supporting human sociality. In this essay, firstly, I point out that humankind’s ultimate strength is the higher and sophisticated sociality. And then, on the basis of recent trends of socio-emotional psychology and behavioral economics, I discuss the function of some emotions as estimator and/or coordinator of the balance of interests and welfares between self and others. Additionally, I mention the nature of shame, sensitizing us to others’ social “eyes” and orienting us towards moral conducts.

The relation between psychology and philosophy is like one with a close relative and a distant relative. They have the same research object, i.e. mind, but their methodologies differ in kind. Emotion is a suitable subject for philosophy to dialogue with psychology. This essay puts forth the comment rather critically on three articles from a philosophical viewpoint. First, Ogihara’s article criticizes the prejudice that the reason is superior to the emotion in western philosophical tradition. Although I agree with his intention, I would like to point out some defects in his arguments. Secondly, related to Kido’s article about Kant’s conception of “common sense,” a query is raised that the double aspect of common sense amounts to a strange concept of “empirical a priori.” Thirdly, Murayama’s article represents an attempt to define the concept of “love” by way of “happiness,” but this definition might fall into a vicious circle. Lastly, joint research is proposed between psychology and philosophy to transcend the concept of causal relations in the mind–brain problem.

<p>This article discusses how the historical study of emotions, which emerged during the period from the 1910s to the 1940s, took ideas and inspirations from psychology. During this period, the basis for the history of senses and feelings was laid out by Johan Huizinga and Lucian Febvre. Much has been written about the roles played by the two historians, especially the latter, in bringing the methods and methodologies of other disciplines such as anthropology and sociology into the historical investigation of the emotional life of people in the past. Yet the contribution of psychology has hitherto been relatively understated. To fill the gap, the article analyses the psychological origin of the history of emotions. It argues that while Huizinga took a nuanced attitude towards natural sciences including physiological psychology, Febvre pleaded for the collaboration between history and psychology and appropriated the dialectical paradigm from Henri Wallon. Wallon's theory of the cognitive development, together with his holistic understanding of the human mind, was drawn into Febvre's conception of the emotional history of civilization. It is hard to overestimate the significance of the collaboration between historians and psychologists of emotions during the years leading to the Second World War. It can be discussed and shared across the boundaries of academic disciplines in the present era. The dialogue with the past helps navigate emotion studies to the future.</p>

In this article the author discusses about the locus of consciousness in psychology of emotion or experimental psychology in general. To begin with a consideration is made about “the great chain of being” to illustrate historical change of the ideas about the distance between man and animals. Some famous philosophers’ ideas are also discussed.In the second section a few experimental studies are presented that indicate animals, such as fish or mice, feel pain. Animals may not automatically respond to a noxious stimulus, but compare some neural representations and choose the most beneficial action.The next section treats whether an animal has real consciousness. Even though an English word “feel” predominantly indicates the subject is conscious, leading psychologists have never asserted that animals are conscious beings. In fact no one has ever succeeded in showing humans are conscious animals if everyone believe “I am conscious.” We have no evidence that inanimate things are really unconscious.Finally two books written by famous psychologists of emotions, William James and Carol Izard, are reviewed and the conclusion is that both psychologists believe that consciousness plays a central role in emotions, but consciousness is not a secure scientific concept, contradictorily. Many psychologists and philosophers believe consciousness has no active role (epiphenomenon theory of consciousness). The author suggests that consciousness is a window to communicate with others by using a code system, i.e. language. Vygotski presented the idea in 1934, but he did not extend the idea to animals. Consciousness expresses a part of the inner state of the organism to other animals including humans, verbally or nonverbally like facial expressions of emotions.

Despite countless international efforts for the peaceful resolution of armed conflicts, why are so many conflicts still observed today? To find an answer to this question, the author seeks to test the following hypothesis; it is difficult to find the root causes of armed conflicts because peace and conflict studies have not paid much attention to research on human emotions. By reviewing previous studies, this hypothesis has been proven true for the following reasons. Firstly, the so-called “rational model” in conflict studies (including the areas of International Law, International Relations and International Politics) does not reflect peoples' felt emotions such as hatred and fear. Secondly, the present international system is not designed to handle politically motivated, aggressive emotions properly. As a conclusion, this essay notes that a pro-social emotion such as empathy does not necessarily prevent conflicts. Interdisciplinary research efforts concerning armed conflicts are needed so that the “vulnerable human model” which indicates a person who can easily switch from victim to aggressor or vice versa will replace the “rational model” in the future research.

Empathy is a source of altruistic behavior by offering kind help for people in distress, and so regarded as a good thing, sometimes a precondition of morality. Empathetic friends and family doubtlessly make us feel warm. It does not follow, however, that empathy is prosocial. Society where we are living now is globalized one big society with a goal of living all together in harmony, including not only people in intimate sphere but dissimilar others from different groups. We would ask how empathy works and what effects of it are in this modern social context. It is discussed that intergroup empathy bias may enlarge conflicts between groups and empathy directed toward in-group victims potentially changes into angry and violence against enemy, even into the vicious cycle of violence.

When wearing facial makeup to look attractive, one may want to consider the following: 1) what are the components of attractiveness that should be enhanced and 2) how are they enhanced? To examine the first issue, a web survey was conducted to investigate the image of attractive women that Japanese women have in their mind, and the facial features that are associated with the image. Results showed that apart from physical appearance, the attractiveness associated with inner beauty also plays an important role in determining the image of attractive women. With regard to facial features, items related to facial expression were rated as more important than those related to other features such as configuration, skin texture and shape and size of features. Furthermore, the priority of the facial features they see when perceiving women’s attractiveness differs among respondents. To explore the second issue, we interviewed artists to gain insights about how inner beauty and other abstract concepts can be expressed through the face. This paper summarizes the findings obtained from these studies and suggests the possibility of an integrated contribution by art and psychology in embodying and understanding abstract concepts.

In this study, we developed two types of behavioral interventions for discouraging smartphone use during walking based on nudge theory and tested their effectiveness in a real-life setting. One nudge was based on the idea of social learning. Pedestrians were presented with short animations through a digital signage reminder about children learning and imitating behaviors by watching adults. The other focused on behavioral fun. Pedestrians were challenged to do “beauty walking” in the walkway and then were shown a feedback animation. If they did not use their smartphone while walking, the animation displayed a fashion model character doing a good runway walk. If they used their smartphone, a bad runway walk animation was shown. As a result, both types of nudges discouraged pedestrians from keeping their smartphones. The latter fun nudge could also encourage them to continue not using their smartphones. Further, those interviewed reacted positively to these nudges. These findings are discussed in the light of prevailing practices for preventing texting while walking using appeals to fear and anxiety.

This article is based on the special lecture presented at the joint meeting of the 40th and the 30th annual conventions of the Japanese Society for Physiological Psychology and Psychophysiology and the Japan Society for Research on Emotions, respectively, held at Kwansei Gakuin University on May 28, 2022. In the first half, recent research trends of psychology of emotion were reviewed based on the handbooks of emotion, edited first by M. Lewis and J. M. Haviland in 1993 and followed by its three revised editions in 2000, 2008, and 2016.The psychology of emotion was recognized as an independent research area during 1980s, which developed rapidly during 1990s and into the interdisciplinary affective science in the 21st century. In the second half, recent research trends of physiological psychology were reviewed based on the handbooks on psychophysiology edited by Cacioppo and his colleagues first in 1990 and later revised in 2000, 2007, and 2017. Physiological psychology, born around 1960, showed dramatic changes especially during 1990s called “the decade of the brain,” and developed into interdisciplinary behavioral neuroscience in the 21st century assisted by the development of new technologies. Among the research areas having shown dramatic growth is the affective neuroscience, which proves the significance of this joint convention.

This study is to focus on factors on well-being and ill-being at work, and to develop a scale to measure quantitatively states of employees’ well-being. The proposed scales consist of the well-being scale (7 factors: 67 items) and the ill-being scale (7 factors: 62 items) at work, which will be positioned as subcategories of existing scales on the subjective well-being such as SWLS (Diner et al., 1985) and Maeno’s four factors of happiness (Maeno, 2013). Identified factors are expected to be used in the fields of career development for individual employees and human resource management, in order to improve the state of well-being and ill-being at work.

This essay discusses how society constructs the sense of self. The sense of self is divided into minimal self and narrative self. The former is further divided into sense of self-agency, bodily self-consciousness, and neural subjective frame. In this essay, I try to make a hypothesis as to how society constructs the sense of self per each layer of the sense of self.

The purpose of this study was to contribute to the planning of solutions and preventive measures against exclusionary behaviors targeting specific minority groups. Focusing on disgust and related emotions, which have rarely been addressed in previous research, the authors developed a hypothetical comprehensive model that explains the psychological processes behind social exclusion, starting from information input, attention bias, cognitive evaluation, emotions, exclusionary attitude, and such behavior. In order to validate the model, we conducted a survey on impressions of Northeast Asian countries with 1068 participants, based on previous studies (Kawano & Nakamura, 2021). As a result of the analysis of covariance for the structural equation model reflecting the hypothetical model, it was confirmed that the model shows the sufficient fit to the date as a comprehensive psychological process model, and we were able to provide guidelines for contributing to the planning of solutions to problems and preventive measures based on the psychological processes behind social exclusion.

From the perspective that disgust is deeply involved in exclusion, I commented on six papers in this special issue. In the first sense, disgust is a food-related emotion that rejects harmful foods. However, with cognitive development, things that are offensive to the self and the group (society, culture) to which the self belongs evoke disgust. Exclusion is often a conscious and deliberate action taken against out-group members who are harmful or expected to be harmful to the in-group and its members. Therefore, a high level of cognitive-emotional process is involved in its occurrence. Disgust plays a central role in this process. Finally, I mentioned the possibility of realizing a multicultural society without exclusion.

<p>The present study explored social sharing of negative emotion on social media related to the 3.11 earthquake. A dataset was created from tweets that included one or more of the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1-NPP) related vocabulary, which were extracted from all Japanese tweets from March 11th, 2011 to April 16th, 2012. The results show anger was less susceptible to attenuation over time and this trend was more obvious in regions farther from the F1-NPP. Anxiety was more commonly shared in regions with a nuclear power plant, but a tendency to decrease over time was observed and this trend was more prominent the closer one was to the F1-NPP.</p>
