We carried out excavation of the remains of a boiler house in Maizuru 3rd Naval Explosives Arsenal. This investigation consists of measurement of the remains, performance evaluation of concrete, and estimating construction method. As a result, it was estimated that the boiler house was consisted of reinforced concrete foundations/walls, plain concrete floor, and some members from plain or fire bricks. On the other hand, the performance of concrete used for the remains was standard compared with the technical standards during World War II. These results will contribute to the grasp and the evaluation of the then architectural technology and design.

This study developed an environmental design tool by combining an outdoor thermal environment simulation with 3D-CAD system performed on personal computer. The outdoor thermal environment simulation applied in this development is able to predict surface temperature distribution of urban blocks taking the spatial form and materials into consideration. Pre- and Post-processing methods were developed considering actual design process. This development actualizes the input and output process using GUI function. The CAD models created by ordinary drawing process are automatically transformed into the mesh model for the calculation. Also the design parameters, inputted in the CAD model drawing process are converted to the parameters used in heat balance calculation. The output of surface temperature distribution is visually displayed onto CAD model.

New assessment system for buildings known as CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency) has been developed. In CASBEE, two environmental aspects i.e. environmental load (L) and quality of building performance (Q) are set as the major assessment targets. BEE (Building Environmental Efficiency) is defined as Q/L, following the concept of eco-efficiency. This assessment structure is the most unique point of CASBEE compared with existing assessment tools. With the increasing BEE value, total environmental performance of buildings is labeled as any of Class C (Poor), B-, B+, A, and S (Excellent). CASBEE is going to provide four tools according to the lifecycle of a building.

This study purposed for prehension about the actual situation of work from the viewpoint of formwork contractors. In this paper, we conducted a questionnaire survey about concrete form plywood, strength and rigidity of form, and formwork based on the experience of formwork carpenters in Kanto region. As a result, it elucidated the actual situation of work, concrete form plywood, strength and rigidity of form, and formwork in the construction site.

Organic reconstituted stone is often used as flooring of buildings in countries outside of Japan. As organic reconstituted stone contains polymer resin, it may discolor yellow by ultra-violet light and heat. At some construction sites, organic reconstituted stone became yellow. Authors conducted tests to investigate the causes of yellowing, methods of prevention and possibilities of further yellowing by replicating the process and making chemical analysis. They found out that long-term exposure to water and heat changes its chemical component and leads to the formation of chromophore having a conjugated double bond and auxochrome having a hydroxyl radical.

The following is to describe some of the principles of analyitcal method developed for this study, which investigates changing conditions of urban land use in Osaka from about the year 1935 to the year 1970. This study found that changes of land use have been affected by the progress of time, and by the enlarging and diminishing of the elements composing this city. Comparing the year 1935 to the year 1970, this study sought to find the interrelationship between the various elements of urban land use, especially analysing how the element of private urban land use, affected over-all urban land use in Osaka. Some results are shown as follows. 1) In Osaka in 1935, the net population density of private urban land use was remarkably high. 2) At the same time, except for the five central wards in Osaka, the ratio of green space was also high. 3) In Osaka after 1970, the net population density of private urban land use has fallen, and there's been a decrease in green space in the outer wards. These changes will greatly influence the civilians actions in daily life. Because of this great influence, it is important that this study continue, keeping abreast with changes in daily life as they happen.

This study aims to clarify the design feature of Maison du Peuple de Clichy, which is located in the northwest of Paris and was designed by French architects in the late 1930’s. As repair works have been carried out in recent years, it became possible for us to analyze this building. We are specifically focusing on the composition of each floor plan, the structure frame and two technical features. One is the prefabricated curtain wall panel which was the first in the world. The other is the system of moveable elements which can be used either as a market, a conference room or a cinema.

Shizuoka City Hall and Shizuoka Public Hall were designed almost in the same period by the same architectural office. But the design policies shown in the elevations of these two buildings were quite different; the elevation of the City Hall had much classical ornament and the elevation of the Public Hall had little. Moreover, such design policies were spontaneously taken by the architectural office. This shows the coexistence of classicism and rationalism which ought not to coexist. Changing the way of designing the elevation in accordance with the architectural type enabled this coexistence, that is, what architectural type was was very important to the architect when he determined the elevation and rationalism was not thoght to be applied to every architectural type. Such way of thinking could be visible among Japanese architects in the early Showa era and this Shizuoka's case is a good example of it.

In this paper, a side view of the present-day crematoria has been investigated, by directing attention to the facilities which had already existed before zones were decided for use inside a city planning area, and by casting light on the problems encountered in the cities having such crematoria. As examples with very interesting characteristics, cities of Sakai and Higashi-Osaka in Osaka Prefecture as well as Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture have been dealt with.

The paper reports the results of the cause investigations of the suspended ceiling collapse, in the auditorium of Kudan Kaikan, which occurred during the off the pacific of Tohoku earthquake on March 11th, 2011. In part1, the detection of the mechanical behavior and process of the collapse of the ceiling are described, while the structural identification and the historical documentations of it are reported in the part 2.

Passive utilization of natural energy is one of the most reasonable way to improve the urban thermal environment in the warm season. The sea-land breeze is an appropriate energy source for this purpose. Statistical method to extract and express the sea-land breeze component from the wind data and the relation between that and the solar radiation data are described in this paper. The AMeDAS and the SDP data, from 1980 to 1984, in 12 cities which are scattered in the whole country are used. The analysis period, which means the warm season, is fixed on condition that the 7-day moving average of daily mean air temperature is above 20℃. The sea-land breeze axis is decided from the wind rose in the analysis period. The sea-land breeze component means the wind vector component of this axis. Sea breeze hours and land breeze hours are fixed by the average sea-land breeze component at each time. The characteristics of the wind direction and speed in the sea and the land breeze hours correspond to the general nature of the sea-land breeze. The sea-land breeze intensity is defined as the difference between the average sea-land breeze component in the sea breeze hours and that in the land breeze hours. The sea-land breeze stability is defined as the ratio of the sea-land breeze intensity to the sum of the average scalar speed in these hours. The relation between the solar radiation and the sea-land breeze intensity or the sea-land breeze stability is examined.

This study investigates the implementation of cross-border cooperation projects in regional cooperation projects that were adopted under the national government’s grant. In addition, we interviewed individuals from the relevant municipalities to clarify the nature of their cooperation in the project. Our research determined 118 cross-border cooperation projects among 592 regional cooperation projects that were initiated under the grant. These projects can be categorized into two types. The first involves cooperation between neighboring municipalities, and the second involves cooperation between remote municipalities.

The biometeorological architecture is defined as a study area which treats with the correlation between a human and the environment based on the biometeorology, clarifying the real state of architecture, searching the design method of architecture, and studying the whole architecture. The object of the biometeorological architecture is the environmental space design which is the technical method designing the environmental space suitable to humans in real form, keeping the fitting state. The design target of the environmental space design is the occupied environmental temperature which is the temperature surrounding the human in the environmental space based on the view point that he is on the time continuing state following by his behaviour. The evaluation of the environment is made from both points of the security and the comfortability which are introduced based on the fundamental principle of the ecology. Although the security and the comfortability are mutually compliment, the estimation of the security is superior to the comfortability. Some important discussion on the death rate as the measure of the lowest level of the security is made. The analysis of the occupied environmental temperature makes it possible indicating some problem on the direction of the research about the biometeorological architecture.

This paper deals with the evaluation of cultural heritage in the historic center of Kyoto. In order to clarify the distribution of cultural heritage, I constructed GIS database on historic buildings by overall fieldwork of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. As a result of this investigation, 2170 buildings and 597 sites were listed, which reached 78 percent of all places. By distribution map concerning the construction period, I can point out the historical significant area, where amount of survived buildings from the conflagration in 1788 are existed. By making the density map, the area where historic buildings concentrated is made visible.

This report summarizes the series of studies on which legislated as JIS S0026 on Mar. 2007, “Standardize the layout of the toilet operation equipment and appliance in public rest room”, is based. The authors implemented user verifications with the cooperation of approximately 100 persons with disabilities (physical and visual), the main group of people to whom extra consideration should be given. According to the verifications, the study proposed the appropriate measurements for installation of the three fixtures (toilet paper holder, flush button, and call button), including the allowable range, as the recommended standard layout.

The car tire and the rubber ball are standard impact sources to measuring floor impact sound. Both impact sources have same impact time, but different frequency characteristics. Purpose of this paper is to examine the correlation of two impact sources by comparing with frequencies in each floor impact sounds, and clarify the compatibility of two impact sources. We found that both floor impact sounds are correlated with octave frequency of 63Hz and under, uncorrelated with 125Hz and over. Therefore, we can make equivalent evaluation of heavy weight floor impact sound at 63Hz band.

Urbanism Places Exhibition 2018 was held at 55HIROBA of the Shinjuku Mitsui Building in September 2018. The central concept raised by the exhibition on urban-planning-based public spaces was “planning heritage as real place”. The exhibition consisted of 4 thematic programs, which had a common principle not to disturb day-to-day activities in the planning heritage place. On the other hand, the exhibition itself was expected to derive public space functions and possibilities. The visitors’ evaluation made clear challenges on the balance between the conceptual pursuit and the visitors’ satisfaction as well as the differences of the evaluation between experts and non-experts.

In this paper, a study has been performed on the ways to collect funds necessary for constructions and repairs of the minor temples and shrines in late 18th century, such as Kasuga-jinja, Mitake-jinja and Myoukou-in in Musashi-koku Tama-gouri, as described in Nanushi Yoshino's records. The constructions and repairs of temples and shrines seem to had required assistances from neighboring villages. However, concerning the above examples, when studied in detail, it is revealed that Nanushi and his followers had procured all the necessary costs by organizing the properties managed by the village, and the funds and labors offerred by the villagers.
