The interactive terms in the mesh superposition method are calculated approximately because the integrand has a discontinuity along the mesh lines in a superimposed global mesh. In this paper, the accurate numerical integration technique for a discontinuous integrand by the Delaunay triangulation is proposed. Integral ranges including discontinuous integrands are divided into triangles only with a continuum integrand. The exact solution is sum of the integral values calculated in all triangles. Appropriate triangle edges can be regenerated by the swapping algorithm even though generated triangles contain the inappropriate boundary lines which bring about a discontinuity. A comparison of the accuracy of numerical integration between the proposed technique and conventional approximate means and an application to a sensitivity calculation are investigated in the first example. The second example illustrates the swapping algorithm for the adjustment of generated triangles.

Recently, a requirement has emerged for vehicles which aim to search for victims who are trapped under the rubble when an earthquake occurs, or to carry out inspections for maintenance activities under house floors and roofs. To meet these requirements, we propose a multi-wheeled snake like robot with actively movable slime body, which is called "Souryu VII". The body of the robot comprises a series of alternate rigid segments and flexible rubber sponge joints, and bending movement of the body is generated by pulling three wires that go through the body. Eight wheels are attached on alternating sides of each rigid segment. The shape of each wheel is long in the axial direction with a cone-like step, and this feature makes it possible to generate propulsion on a large area of the bottom surface. Finally, the advantageous architecture we proposed was validated with experiments in which Souryu VII overcame various obstacles.

A 1/20 scaled electric-powered test model robot of the quadruped walking construction robot TITAN XI has been developed to conduct experiments and trainings in lower cost and easier. The legs are driven by RC servo motors and have the same D.O.F. configuration and proportion. Suspension tether winded by motor-driven winches are force-controlled by newly developed tension sensors for steep slopes. A robot controller which consists of the same numbers of joysticks and switches was developed for manual control. Test model is controlled by three SH-2 (SH7047) microcomputers and they are communicating via CAN interface. By automatic and manual control, the robot climbed up a steep slope model and step over obstacles.

This paper describes a new quantification method of a product's emotional quality, which we call kansei quality, with attention paid to its diversity to support the affective design. The customer's sensitivity towards such a quality differs from person to person due to perception gaps and ambiguity. The proposed method helps the designer to grasp such diverse sensitivities of customers. In contrast to the conventional approach that aims to generalize human sensitivity using average results of sensory tests, the proposed method divides an emotional quality based on differences among the customers' sensitivity. We apply the proposed method for designing a machine sound in which the designer deals with the sound quality as a kansei quality. We carry out an impression evaluation experiment on human subjects using existing product sounds. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, we compare the proposed method with the conventional approach using experimental results. The comparison results show the advantages of the method, such as the avoidance of meaningless average data caused by canceling out multiple different sensitivities. Based on the proposed method, we developed a prototype system that enables the designer to evaluate the kansei qualities of created sound without conducting a sensory test.

Quadruped animals switch gait patterns with walking frequency for energy-effective walking. This is similar to the phenomenon that excited natural vibration modes are switched with vibration frequency in a MDOFs system. Therefore, in this paper, it is assumed that quadruped animals walk by using the natural vibration of their own musculoskeletal systems. In the simplest rigid-body-link model consisting of a body and four legs, there are the natural vibration modes similar to the gait patterns (trot, pace and gallop) of quadruped animals. However, all the natural frequencies in the model exist near the natural frequency in the free leg, and are accordingly different from the walking frequencies of actual quadruped animals. In the rigid-body-link model added a scapular and a pelvic on observations of quadrupted walking, the natural frequency of the gallop mode corresponding to high speed walking raises greatly and approaches the walking frequency. If the physical characteristics of horses were applied to the rigid-body-link model added the leg's joints, the natural vibration in the model is close to the gait patterns of horses.

In recent years, the wind turbines have been installed actively and the suitable sites of wind farm have been decreased on land. On the other hand, a lot of wind energy resources are latent and it is expected that wind power will be installed in the future on the sea. This study aims to establish a measurement method of wind characteristics using a small ship for decision of suitable site for offshore wind power. We constructed the wind measurement system, which is composed of an ultrasonic anemometer, a differential GPS (DGPS) and an inertial measurement unit. The system was installed to a small ship and wind characteristics at 10 m height above the sea surface were measured by an ultrasonic anemometer on the Sea of Japan close to Tottori prefecture. Raw data of the wind velocity obtained in the proposed method includes the error caused by the pitching, rolling and yawing of the ship. In this study, the raw data of wind velocity was corrected by the data of the DGPS and the inertial measurement unit. Conclusively, the raw wind velocity contaminated by the oscillation and cruising of the ship was corrected and the wind velocity maps were obtained.

Lsystem (LS) is a technique expressing a formation algorithm creating the various shape patterns by the simple rules. Using LS, the complex branch phenomena of plants could be described by simple rules. This paper has tried the methodology to apply LS to the structural design. This methodology grows up the structure as if plants grow up, and produces the optimum structure that is appropiate for the design purpose. It is difficult to acquire LS rules for the optimum structure because the rules have many degrees of freedom. Therefore, this paper proposes an idea that evolves LS rules using Genetic Algorithms (GA) . The methodology is called as an evolutionary LS (ELS) . Using the methodology, the design problems to decide optimum distribution of material and plate thickness are solved.

Artificial skin having human skin-like texture is necessary for the development of tactile evaluation systems and for robots that have physical contact with humans. This paper describes a novel type of artificial skin having human skin-like texture and a model of human texture perception. The artificial skin is designed by emulating the surface shape pattern and elastic structure of the human skin. Appropriate wettability and friction property of the artificial skin is achieved by designing the surface shape. Through sensory evaluation, we confirm the artificial skin has human skin-like texture due to its surface shape pattern and elastic structure. In addition, we build a model of skin-like texture perception through multivariate analysis between physical parameters and tactile factor scores. This model can indicate what factor is important for human skin-like texture. From the results, artificial skin having optional skin-like texture can be developed

To minimize the risk of fatalities in the event of earthquakes, it is extremely important to prevent the derailed vehicle from deviating from the track as well as to prevent the vehicle from derailment. Authors have developed a post derailment stopper (hereinafter referred to as, “stopper”), which attaches to a bogie frame and prevents derailed vehicles from veering of the track. For the development of the stopper and evaluation of its efficacy, we conducted running tests under derailment conditions using real bogies and tracks. Based on the results of the running tests, we have developed a 15DOF vehicle dynamics model in order to discuss the motion of the bogie in the derailment condition. In this model, focusing on the analysis of the motion of the bogie and the stopper, vertical wheel displacements which were measured at the running tests are used as input data and non-linear characteristics observed at the running tests are considered. In this paper, we analyze the motion of the bogie and efficacy of the stopper with this model and the test results.

Phase-field topology optimization model which aims the maximum rigidity of mechanical structure has been developed and its fundamental performances have been evaluated by performing two-dimensional cantilever simulation. Here, the effects of interface thickness, initial morphology and solid volume fraction on the final morphologies and rigidity have been investigated. As a result, it has been confirmed that the thin interface thickness produces the high rigidity of the structure with small computational cost. Furthermore, the developed model enabled us to maximize the rigidity of mechanical structure stably and easily and the initial morphology dependencies of final morphology were relatively small.

This paper deals with the occurrence mechanism of the squeal phenomena generated in a new type of bicycle disk brake unit and its countermeasure experimentally and analytically. It was made clear that squeal was in-plane vibration in the direction of disk surface with frequency 650 Hz caused by frictional characteristics with negative slope with respect to the relative velocity, and was generated in the vibration system including brake unit and spokes, in the same manner of old type of disk brake unit. The countermeasure against squeal by using a dynamic absorber was conducted. The simple analytical model of the bicycle disk brake system was set up. Some features of squeal phenomena and the optimal design of dynamic absorber for quenching squeal were made clear analytically and it was confirmed that the analytical results agreed well with the experimental ones.

This study proposes the cohesive zone model (CZM) for fatigue damage growth in the notched CFRP cross-ply laminates. In this model, the damage growth in the fracture process of cohesive elements due to cyclic loading is represented by the conventional damage mechanics model. We preliminary investigated how this model can appropriately express the fatigue damage growth for the circular crack embedded in the isotropic solid material. This investigation demonstrated that this model could reproduce the results with the well-established fracture mechanics model plus the Paris law by tuning adjustable parameters. We then numerically investigated the damage progress in notched CFRP cross-ply laminates under tensile cyclic loading and compared the predicted damage patterns with experiments reported by Spearing et al. (Compos. Sci. Technol. 1992). The predicted damage patterns agreed with the experiment results that exhibited the extension of the multiple types of damage (i.e., splits, transverse cracks and delaminations) near the notches.

The authors proposed a security system that could detect two or more theft events ((a) opening a lock, (b) opening a hood, (c) opening a trunk, (d) picking and (e) opening a door) of a vehicle using car speakers. Two or more theft events were distinguished by using the amplitude of the sound. However, this method may be affected by the surrounding environmental sounds. In this paper, the author proposes a new method using sound frequencies to determine theft events. First, the noise in the measurement signal was reduced by wavelet shrinkage. The signal of almost events was able to be detected. To investigate the frequency of each event signal, fast fourier transform was performed. In two or more theft events, there was a difference in the frequency elements. Finally, neural network was used to provide relation between frequency elements and five events. As a result, the method proposed is able to distinguish between the five events. The proposed method was verified experimentally that it is possible to determine some of the theft event.

This paper proposes a contactless vibration testing system for rotating disks based on an impulse response excited by a laser ablation. High power YAG pulse laser is used in this system for producing an ideal impulse force on structural surface without contact. The contactless vibration testing system is composed of a YAG laser, laser Doppler vibrometer and spectrum analyzer. This system makes it possible to measure vibration characteristics of structures under operation, such as vibration measurement of a rotating disk. The effectiveness of this system is confirmed by experimental and theoretical analyses. In this paper, a platter of hard disk drive is employed as an experimental object. Vibration characteristics of a rotating and non-rotating platter are measured and compared with the results of theoretical analysis.

Strict geometrical stability is required for the precise structures like telescopes. Unpredictable out-of-plane deformation is a serious problem when we use CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) laminate to the precise structure. This out-of plane deformation of symmetrical CFRP laminate mainly arise from combination effects of ply angle misalignment and temperature change. We discussed here is effective stacking sequence of CFRP laminate that mitigate the deformation caused by the ply angle misalignment. The analysis based on laminate theory was performed to calculate the thermal deformation. In this analysis, the random numbers were added to each layers as ply angle misalignments. The analytical results were obtained statistically by Monte Carlo method. Mohr's curvature circle was also incorporated to evaluate the deformation as P-V (peak to Valley) values. We performed the analysis with various stacking sequence. It was calculated that the symmetric cross-ply laminates deformed 10 times larger than the other quasi-symmetric laminates. In the case of the total ply number is less than 12, the stacking sequence in the laminate has a significant effects on the thermal deformation. However, if the total number ply number is more than 24, effect of stacking sequence on the thermal deformation becomes negligible. We also discussed the geometrical stability of CFRP mirror by considering unavoidable ply angle misalignment. It was presumed that the CFRP mirror can be used for wide range of wave length when the back structure was attached to CFRP laminates.

This study develops a dialogue model and a command interpretation technique for service robots to obtain interactively the necessary information of actions for the tasks requested from users. A request from users sometimes misses some data necessary to complete the requested task because a voice command is usually requested depending on context and situation. The developed command interpretation technique first divides a command into words. Then, it analyzes the content of the command paying attention to the verb used and object included. If there are some missing data in the command, it sequentially generates queries to obtain them. The applicability of the dialogue model and the technique is demonstrated by dialogue experiments using a robot arm system.

A flapping water turbine is a kind of power generating machine which extracts mechanical energy from flowing water by swing of blade motion. In this study, we carried out numerical simulation of blade motion and experiment on river. In the simulation, we made numerical integration of momentum equation about roll angle and compared the result with experiment in water channel. The disagreement in roll angle between the simulation and the result of experiment were discussed by using analytical model and basic data of blade fluid dynamic characteristics. The result of river experiment showed that flapping water turbine can extract energy from stream with rippling surface and turbulence.
