In recent years, RFID systems have received much attention in information management and security. For evaluation of RFID systems, study of electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering of UHF wave and microwave transmitted from tag antenna to reader antenna in in-door and out-door is indispensable. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of electromagnetic wave scattering, diffraction and interference by obstacles in propagation channel and show the distribution of received level using FDTD method. In RFID systems, receiving characteristics are strongly influenced by the structure of roads and buildings for out-door environment and rooms, doors and windows for in-door environment. Three-dimensional numerical analysis is studied to evaluate the effects of the earth of roads and building with finite heights for out-door applications and effects of ceil and floor of buildings for in-door applications. Signal processing and control are important to recognize each tag code correctly even if multiple codes from tags are received by a reader simultaneously. In this paper, received characteristics when multiple tags transmit signals modulated by ASK are studied by FDTD method and compared with the analytical results.

We have been developing GILs for use as large capacity transmission lines since 1969. In 1979, GIL was applied to a 154kV in-yard link line of The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. for the first time in Japan. In 1980, we began the development of a compact GIL to improve cost efficiency and applicability, it was applied to a 500kV incoming line of The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. in 1985. This project planned as 275kV getaway lines connected to overhead line (810mm<sup>2</sup>&times;4) in Shin Noda Substation of The Tokyo Electric Co., Inc. The 8, 000A class 275kV GILs are the largest current underground transmission lines in the world. The paper describes the design, installation and tests of the project.

SF<sub>6</sub> gas has excellent dielectric strength and interruption performance. For these reasons, it has been widely used for gas insulated switchgear (GIS). However, use of SF<sub>6</sub> gas has become regulated under agreements set at the 1997 COP3. So investigation and development for GIS with a lower amount of SF<sub>6</sub> gas are being carried out worldwide. Presently, SF<sub>6</sub> gas-free GIS has been commercialized for the 24kV class. Air or N<sub>2</sub> gas is used as insulation gas for this GIS. On the other hand, SF<sub>6</sub> gas-free GIS has not been commercialized for 72kV class GIS. Dielectric strengths of air and N<sub>2</sub> gas are approximately 1/3 that of SF<sub>6</sub> gas. So to enhance insulation performance of air and N<sub>2</sub>, we have investigated a hybrid gas insulation system which has the combined features of providing an insulation coating and suitable insulation gas. We have developed the world's first 72kV SF<sub>6</sub> gas-free GIS.<br>This paper deals with key technologies for SF<sub>6</sub> gas-free GIS such as the hybrid insulation structure, bellows for the high pressure vacuum circuit breaker, a newly designed disconnector and spacer and prevention of particle levitation. Test results of 72kV high pressure air-insulated GIS with the vacuum circuit breaker are described.

The electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode is made of carbonized and activated materials. The material surface and electrical characteristics of carbon materials produced from low cost organic materials were examined. First, a cotton cloth was carbonized and activated, and its optimal time and temperature of carbonization and activation processing were examined. And, its surface area, pore volume and pore size distributions were analyzed. Second, activated carbons were applied to the electrodes of 1Wh class EDLC cell with water electrolyte solution. The capacitances and internal resistances of the assembled EDLC cell were measured by a charge and discharge circuit using constant voltage source. And, the charge and discharge cycle test was performed on these assembled EDLC cells under practical use condition. As a result, EDLC cells using the activated carbon with large surface area of 1300m2/g showed the high density of capacitance 0.5-1.1F/cm2. The internal resistances of EDLC cells were less than 0.34W. It was also found that the EDLC cells had no deterioration in the charge and discharge cycle test under practical condition. It shows that the activated carbon made of cotton cloth contributes to the low cost and safety electrode of an EDLC.

For embedded systems, concurrency is required to respond to various changes in real world. Real-time processing is required also, because the response typically has a time limit. The concurrency is implemented by processing Tasks or Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs) concurrently. And the necessity of mutual exclusion arises in concurrent processing, to maintain integrity of shared data. Task execution is scheduled by Real-time OS (RTOS), and mutual exclusion is serviced by semaphore. However approximately 30% of embedded systems do not use RTOS. These systems have no notion of Tasks, and are purely driven by ISRs. As the sole mutual exclusion method between ISRs, a pair of interrupt disable/enable instructions provided by CPU is used in these systems. This method enables a lower priority ISR to protect its critical section from higher priority ISRs, but it also defers execution of unrelated ISRs as it disables all external interrupts. We have resolved this timing issue with an ISR-callable semaphore, but that design was not priority inversion safe. Namely a middle priority ISR may indirectly block a higher priority ISR if this higher priority ISR waits for a semaphore from a lower priority ISR, because the lower priority ISR can be preempted by the middle priority ISR. Priority inheritance is an effective protection method against this priority inversion problem, and it is expected to improve real-time performance of OS-less embedded systems. This paper proposes an ISR-callable priority inheritance semaphore which protects ISRs from priority inversion using hardware interrupt mechanism.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for stepping forward action of biped robot with minimum kicking force. In walking or starting to walk, the general biped robot kicks the ground with its own hind leg as well as human being does. The condition of the ground often restricts the gait because of stiffness, slipperiness and so on. In order to surmount the difficulty on stepping forward action, we introduce the redundant legged biped robot, which has 4 degree-of-freedoms on each leg. Our robot enables to move its tip position and its center of mass (COM) position independently. Controlling COM acceleration without moving its tip position realizes the stepping forward action with little kicking force. The physical experimental results show the significant validity of the proposed approach.

Recently, active researches have been performed to increase a robot's intelligence so as to realize the dexterous tasks in complex environment such as in the street or homes. However, since the skillful human-like task ability is so difficult to be formulated for the robot, not only the analytical and theoretical control researches but also the direct human motion mimetic approach is necessary. In this paper, we propose that to realize the environmental interactive task, it is insufficient to replay the human motion along. We show a novel motion generation approach to integrate the cognitive information into the mimic of human motions so as to realize the final complex task by the robot. As a detailed example of the task, we consider on how to carry up a human by cooperating two hands.

For the system providing server SSD (Solid State Drive) cache and volume tiering functions, it is difficult to determine which data to be placed into SSD tier on the basis of the number of I/O (Input/Output). In this paper, we propose a volume tiering method cooperating with the server SSD cache, which counts the number of I/O on the server and allocates storage SSD to read-intensive areas. We conduct an I/O simulation experiment using I/O log traced on the real environment to validate the proposed method. We show that the proposed method reduces I/O average response time by up to 10% compared to the existing method through the I/O simulation experiment.

The Ballooning mode, which occurs at a region where the plasma pressure gradient exceeds a certain limit, needs to be suppressed to achieve high β. Using a magnetic-probe system with a high spatial resolution, we measured magnetic fluctuations in a very local area to get fluctuations due to the Ballooning mode. As its result, we found that the amount of fluctuation decreased with Itfc while Itfc < 40 kA, but that it increased while Itfc > 40 kA, which agreed with the earlier simulation of the ballooning mode. Analyzing the fluctuation of Itfc > 40 kA, we found that the frequency was 0.4 - 0.8 MHz and the mode number was about 10.

This paper presents a novel QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) sensor for detecting interactions between membrane proteins and their ligands using liposomes derived from human cells. First, liposomes having BCR (B-cell receptor) were derived directly from cell membranes by stimulating human lymphocyte cells, Ramos, with NaB (sodium butyrate). Next, the liposomes were separated from the cells by filtration and micronized by sonication. Then, the liposomes were immobilized on the surface of a QCM sensor chip using cell-anchoring molecules. Several experiments demonstrated that ligand detection is achieved by frequency reduction with application of the antibody against BCR.

In this study, we propose a simple observation method of the shape and molecular orientation of the chromosomes extracted from cells for a sample-to-analysis system in clinical diagnosis. The proposed technique is composed of total preparation technique such as cell immobilization, chromosomes extraction, stretching, suspension and analysis using a disposable microchip controlled by centrifugal force only. It is experimentally confirmed that the chip having two kinds of microstructures arranged concentrically on a chip immobilizes cells and stretches chromosomes extracted from the immobilized cells.

This paper presents a cell compression stimulus microdevice intended to evaluate the real-time response of cells to compression stimuli. The presented device consists of cell inlet ports, a pressure inlet port, a gasket, microchannels, culture chambers, and a diaphragm on the culture chamber for applying compressive pressure to cells. Compression stimuli applied to the cells can be controlled by regulating the expansion of the diaphragm via a pressure control. The device permits the observation of cellular responses to compressive pressure in real time because it is made of transparent materials and stimulates the cells without deforming the cell culture surface, when observed by optical microscope. We observed the cellular deformation and response behavior using a fabricated microdevice in real time. The changes of intracellular calcium concentration before and after compressive stimuli were observed by the fabricated device. Also, the intracellular maximum strain part and strain distribution of a cell that received compression stimulus were clarified by FEM analysis. These results indicate the device is expected to clarify the cellular mechanoreceptor mechanisms and signal transduction pathways and facilitate the control of stem cell differentiation by a combination of the experimental results and FEM analysis results.
