<p>We developed a mobile learning system for fishery and ocean techniques using video contents. The system aims to improve the current situation in the field of education on fishery and ocean for skill succession. The proposal is based on the industry-school education process for skill succession. By accessing the web site and watching practical videos, the users can learn methodologies on fishery and ocean. As a result, we showed that the system is effective for sharing and succession of techniques for the learner. Application of the proposed system in the class showed improvement in the students' autonomous learning.</p>

<p>Crop growth is influenced by various environmental factors. As a condition for effective plant growth, it is necessary that control of the habitat environment, such as soil moisture content, temperature, humidity, solar radiation amount, is adequately delivered. We focused the fact that soil moisture is important. It is desirable that moisture is uniformly distributed in the soil. In order to avoid physiological disorders caused by water related stress on agricultural crops, it is necessary to use soil with appropriate permeability. By calculating and estimating some characteristic amount related to water permeability, it is possible to identify soil with appropriate water permeability. In this research, we realize the visualization of the planar soil moisture volume by arranging the soil moisturemeter at multiple points. In addition to a system that realizes planar visualization of soil moisture, we propose a method for estimating soil permeability parameters in combination with computer simulation.</p>

With the increase of wind power penetration in power system, the uncertainty caused by wind farm forecast error is enlarged which results in deterioration of wind power curtailment. In order to optimize the capacity of battery storage for mitigating forecast error, firstly it is necessary to improve the accuracy of forecast error model. This paper proposed a modeling method of forecast error time series in usage of beta distribution. Varying with forecast output, parameters of the beta distribution are estimated by maximum likelihood estimation. Autocorrelated forecast error obeying beta distribution is generated by correlated Monto-Carlo simulation. Based on the forecast error model, an optimization method is proposed to determine the optimum size of battery storage for mitigating forecast error. Through maximizing the total profit composed of electricity sales revenue, penalty and battery cost, the optimum size of battery storage is calculated. The results show that the forecast error model proposed in this paper is able to simulate both probability density function and autocorrelation correctly, which is beneficial to improving the accuracy and economy of battery storage sizing.

It is well-known that concentration of generated ozone by ozone generator with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) using high purity oxygen as a fed gas is decreased with time. The phenomenon is called "Ozone Zero Phenomenon" (OZP). As one of factors responsible for occurrence of this phenomenon is speculated to be an influence from electrode surface, we have focused our investigation on electrode surface heating generated by electrical discharge. In this paper, we studied the behavior of thermal decomposition ozone flowing ozone into the heated stainless steel pipe, and examined the temporal change of the decomposition rate of ozone. In the results, when ozone decomposition in stainless steel pipe that have not been exposed to ozone, decomposition rate of ozone has a momentarily sharp peak after that was stable. Subsequently, it was repeated thermal decomposition of ozone under the same condition we couldn't have the same results of high decomposition rate of ozone. Over 180℃ of heating temperature of stainless steel pipe, when ozone concentration flowing into the stainless steel pipe is high, decomposition rate of ozone is high. And also we found that temperature of stainless steel pipe was increasing. It was thought that cause of the temperature rise that occurs the heat generated in the ozone decomposition.

In traditional coordinated traffic signal control on an urban road network, the following two problems have been known. First, the conventional method involves a time lag between traffic measurement and signal control. Second, an abrupt switching of control parameters throws the traffic flow into disorder.This paper proposes a new approach to avoid these problems. We increase the frequency of switching. The control parameters are switched as frequent as every two cycles. At the time of switching, minor variations of the on-going plan are generated. For each variation of plan, traffic delay at each intersection is predicted based on measured traffic data at up-stream detectors. Then the plan minimizing the delay is chosen to be the control parameters in the next cycle. In order to evaluate the validity of this approach, experiments were carried out using a traffic simulator. The experiments indicate that the proposed method reduces the queue length significantly, compared with the conventional method.

One of the common problems faced by many electric utilities concernes with the uncertainty from both load forecast error and generating unit unavailability. This uncertainty might lead to uneconomic operation if it is not managed properly in the planning stage. Utilities may have many operational tools, e.g. unit commitment, economic dispatch. However, they require a proper operating strategy, taking into account uncertainties. This paper explicitly demonstrates how to include the uncertainties to obtain the best operating strategy for any power systems. The uncertainty of the load forecast is handled using decision analysis method, meanwhile the uncertainty of the generating unit is approached by inclusion of risk cost to the total cost. In addition, three spinning reserve strategies based on deterministic criteria are incorporated in the development of scenario. Meanwhile, Mixed Integer Linear Programming method is utilized to generate unit commitment decision in each created scenario. The best strategy which gives the minimum total cost is selected among the developed scenarios. The proposed method has been tested using a modified of IEEE 24-bus system. Sensitivity analysis with respect to the number of unit, expected unserved energy price, standard deviation of load forecast, and probability of load level is reported.

The low cost improved recognition of an uncooled infrared image processing has been required urgently for the development of high sensitive uncooled sensor like a cooled sensor. In this study, the uncooled infrared image taken by YBaCuO bolometer camera was improved with applying a special low cost image processing systems. The improved image with this processing exhibited not only the edge enhancement in a large contrast area but also the suppression of heat noise in a small contrast area. It is clarified that this improved recognition image processing is easy to realize at low cost, and the demand for this image processing will be expected to grow up as the use of uncooled infrared sensor system increases.

This paper proposes a new feedback-type dead-time compensation method. The proposed method compensates the output voltage by employing two operations. First, the normal compensation matches the width of the output pulse to that of the input pulse with reduced delay time from the input pulse to the output pulse compared with the conventional method. Second, the short pulse compensation generates an output pulse after a few pulses are input so that the average value of the output signal equals that of the input signal. The voltage utilization factor of the proposed method is almost 100%, because there is no limit to the compensation and the decrease in the fundamental output caused by dead time is eliminated. The experimental results using a 100-kHz input signal show that there is no discrepancy between the output pulse width and the input pulse width. Furthermore, the THD of the compensated output current, when the output frequency is 50Hz, is eliminated, compared with that of the output current without compensation. These results show that the proposed method has low distortion and high voltage utilization factor characteristics.

Recently, digital cameras are offering technical advantages rapidly. However, the shot image is different from the sight image generated when that scenery is seen with the naked eye. There are blown-out highlights and crushed blacks in the image that photographed the scenery of wide dynamic range. The problems are hardly generated in the sight image. These are contributory cause of difference between the shot image and the sight image. Blown-out highlights and crushed blacks are caused by the difference of dynamic range between the image sensor installed in a digital camera such as CCD and CMOS and the human visual system. Dynamic range of the shot image is narrower than dynamic range of the sight image. In order to solve the problem, we propose an automatic method to decide an effective exposure range in superposition of edges. We integrate multi-step exposure images using the method. In addition, we try to erase pseudo-edges using the process to blend exposure values. Afterwards, we get a pseudo wide dynamic range image automatically.

Takasaki-Nagano section, a part of Hokuriku Shinkansen was opened in October, 1997, just before Nagano Winter Olympics. Hokuriku Shinkansen has been electrified by 30kV a. c. commercial frequency AT feeding system.<br>As for the commercial frequency, Japan is divided into two zones: the western part of Japan is a 60Hz zone and its eastern part is a 50Hz zone. Two different power frequencies exist in Hokuriku Shinkansen which passes power frequency borders between different electric power companies. Therefore, in case of a contact fault between two different power frequencies, a beat-formed large fault current will flow, which should be immediately detected and cut off.<br>At present, a distance relay and an AC &Delta;I type relay are used as protective relays for a feeding circuit of Shinkansen lines. However, it was experimentally made clear that those relays do not operate by a beat-formed fault current which appears in the case of a contact fault between two different power frequencies. For this reason, we have developed and put to practical use a protective relay for a contact fault between two different frequencies, which operates by detecting 55Hz component peculiar to the current caused by the contact fault and also detecting power frequency of an opponent traction substation.<br>They have been installed at a frequency-bordered sectioning post and at traction substations which sandwich the sectioning post.

Genetic Network Programming (GNP) is an evolutionary computation which represents its solutions using graph structures. Since GNP can create quite compact programs and has an implicit memory function, it has been clarified that GNP works well especially in dynamic environments. In addition, a study on creating trading rules on stock markets using GNP with Importance Index (GNP-IMX) has been done. IMX is a new element which is a criterion for decision making. In this paper, we combined GNP-IMX with Actor-Critic (GNP-IMX&AC) and create trading rules on stock markets. Evolution-based methods evolve their programs after enough period of time because they must calculate fitness values, however reinforcement learning can change programs during the period, therefore the trading rules can be created efficiently. In the simulation, the proposed method is trained using the stock prices of 10 brands in 2002 and 2003. Then the generalization ability is tested using the stock prices in 2004. The simulation results show that the proposed method can obtain larger profits than GNP-IMX without AC and Buy&Hold.

A main problem with dynamical associative memories (DAMs) is that when memory patterns are stored, pseudo-memories (false fixed points and limit cycles) are also generated and they hinder proper association of input patterns. To overcome this problem, Hassoun proposed a heuristic method of reducing pseudo-memories. In this method, DAMs are constructed such that a zero vector called &ldquo;ground state&rdquo; as well as stored patterns is stabilized and sparsely activated states (sparse patterns) converge to the ground state. Such dynamical properties of neural networks can be described with linear inequalities, and connection weights of networks are obtained by solving these inequalities using the Ho-Kashyap algorithm. In this paper, we propose an extended Hassoun model in which network dynamics are modified such that dense patterns, mix-ture patterns and inhibition patterns are also converged to the ground state. In simulations, we compare association performance of this extended Hassoun model with conventional associative memory models, and demonstrate the usefulness of our proposed model as a dynamical associative memory.

This paper focuses on a battery energy storage system that can be installed in a 6.6-kV power distribution system. This system comprises a combination of a modular multilevel cascade converter based on single-star bridge-cells (MMCC-SSBC) and multiple battery modules. Each battery module is connected to the dc side of each bridge-cell, where the battery modules are galvanically isolated from each other. Three-phase multilevel line-to-line voltages with extremely low voltage steps on the ac side of the converter help in solving problems related to line harmonic currents and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. This paper proposes a control method that allows each bridge-cell to independently adjust the battery power flowing into or out of each battery module. A three-phase energy storage system using nine nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery modules, each rated at 72V and 5.5Ah, is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the viability and effectiveness of the proposed control method.
