Safety of automobiles is increasingly demanded. To prevent burst of tires, smart tires are currently under development The embedded sensor enables highly precise measurement of road surface friction, and the precise friction measurements make more efficient anti-blocking-system (ABS). In a previous study, the authors proposed a new wireless strain monitoring method that adopts the tire itself as a sensor, with an oscillator circuit. This method is very simple and useful, but it requires a battery to activate the oscillator circuit. In the present study, the previous method for wireless tire monitoring is improved to produce a passive wireless sensor. The capacitance change of tire causes changes of the tuning frequency. This change of the tuned radio wave enables us to measure the applied strain of the specimen wirelessly, without any power supply from outside. This new passive wireless method is applied to a specimen and the static applied strain is measured.

This paper presents a gestual interaction system between human and robot using pointing movement. To interact at actual rooms, the system that obtained RGB information of a pointed out object was developed. The system recognized a pointing gesture and obtained a feature of pointed out object by a image processing. Two sets of tracking modules comprised of a camera and a PC was prepared in a room. Thus, in this research, we constructed RGB data obtaining module. The module obtained coordinates of indicated point and calculate the coordinates in picture. The system was developed using Robot Technology Middleware (RTM). RT Middleware was developed by AIST (Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, Japan) for easily integrating robot systems by modularized software components. By constructing modules based on RT Middleware, we developed modules, which are functional elements to interact with human as components of easily system integration.

For the development of high-functional and complex mechatronics products, it is becoming necessary to manage the design process considering multi-domains such as electrical, mechanical and software specialties. However, at present, in the process of embedded software development, the software developers often have to spend their time and efforts by wasteful and unnecessary design iterations because that they don't understand the original requirements and previous designing intentions exactly. The authors predict that the mechanical designers in previous processes, don't describe the reasons, how to analyze and why to adoption technologies insufficiently. In this paper, the authors propose that the requirement model should be introduced in development process, because all designers can understand "what to make" precisely. In reference of the studies of various requirement definitions, especially object-oriented approach, the authors studied that the procedure of description in the requirement model, which is suitable for the development of high-functional and complex mechatronics products. An intelligent crane system is designed as an example to examine the possibilities of description using SysML. In conclusion, proposed requirement model is confirmed that it can surely describe the product requirement of the mechatronics product.

This paper proposes a method of impact analysis of the design change from the initial design stage. In author's previous work, a hierarchical requirement model is proposed in order to define the requirement of the complex mechatronics product. The product requirement is decomposed into three aspects: mechanical, electrical, and software. A hierarchical functional structure is proposed to represent the functional component in each design layer. The states and actions is designed as an activity diagram, and decomposed into the activity diagram in the next design stage. A constraint diagram is proposed to assign behavior elements and technical specifications. A decomposition process of the states, actions, and values is visualized using dependency structure matrix. The design change propagation analysis is proposed based on matrix between components, object flows, states, actions, and values. The proposed method is developed as a proto-type system based on SysML specifications and using Rhapsody. An intelligent crane system is designed as an example. A design change of the required behavior and actions is tested. The design result indicated that the proposed method surely can provide an affected components, parameters, and technical specifications with the change of requirement behavior.

An effective method for calculating the nonlinear-rocking response of ground-supported unanchored cylindrical tanks to earthquakes was developed. In this method, tank wall and liquid content are replaced with a mass-spring system, and the nonlinearity associated with the partial uplift of bottom plates due to overturning moments is considered as the rotational spring of bi-linear type which is determined by a static uplift analysis of tank bottom. The reliability of the dynamic analysis was illustrated by computing resonance frequencies, response accelerations and rotation angles of tank models and by comparing them with the results of vibration tests. A seismic deign procedure for nonlinear rocking of tanks is proposed, in which the uplift height of bottom plates is calculated by dynamic rocking analysis and the corresponding radial stress of them is obtained by static analysis. And a rocking analysis of a full-sized tank was tried, too.

When an earthquake hitting, the part of the bottom plate of the unanchored cylindrical tank will be lifted up from the foundation so that no resistance mechanism is existed against the uplift force caused by the overturning moment. The high stresses will be yielded in the bottom plate and the shell plate. This report concerns those problems. The calculation model was made in order to obtain the uplift resistance force, the uplift height, the reaction force from the foundation and the uplift region. In this model, the uplift region was considered as crescent shape, and the elasto-plastic, large deformation effect and the contact problem of the bottom plate was considered. From the comparison between this calculation model and the static tilt test of a thin bottom plate model tank, the calculation result was good agreement with the test.

In a cold region like Hokkaido having continuous snowfall during winter season, people are often found being slipped or fallen down while walking in the snow covered road. This sometimes causes serious injuries or fracture of bones especially to elderly people, and many of them become bedridden. In the traditional way of gait analysis, limited place and range of experiment were the constraints of measuring device. In this study, gait analysis was performed by using wearable sensors to obtain acceleration and angular velocities without the constraints of place and range of experiment. The experiment was carried out on indoor flat road, indoor stairs, paved sloping road (having slope of 5 degrees), snowy flat road and quasi-snowy flat road. The features of gait on the snowy flat road were obtained from the acceleration values.

A fall in walking on snowy road often causes sever hip fracture. For especially elderly person, thus hip fracture has high risk for bedridden. The purpose of this study is to investigate the gait characteristics on snowy road. In this experiment, eight healthy subjects walked onto snowy and asphalt roads. Gait accelerations were recorded at 20Hz by micro-accelerators equipped with the head, hip, knee and ankle of them. As a result, it was confirmed that the gate acceleration of each body segment showed different patterns with road conditions. Slipping during gait on snowy road could be detected from the change of acceleration of ankle.

Two kinds of road racer bicycles are employed to research vibration characteristics of driving bicycles. After obtaing the natural frequencies and modes by vibration test in the non-driving state, practical driving tests are carried out. The acceleration of vibration in the middle of the handles and under the saddles are measured and the corresponding spectral density functions are calculated based on FFT method. The results show that in the driving bicycles, the dominant frequencies exist between 10 Hz and 50 Hz and the lower two modes in the non-driving state are excited.

It is necessary to use the low temperature thermal energy around 100 degress C from a viewpoint of global warming prevention. Even if a shape memory alloy is bent in normal temperature, when it is heated, it has the character which returns to the original straight form. Using this character of a shape memory alloy, unused thermal energy will be able to transform into rotation energy. A shape memory alloy belt is hung on a high temperature wheel and a low-temperature wheel. On this simple pulley type shape memory alloy engine, a shape memory alloy belt is heated with a high temperature wheel, it occurs a moment when returning to the original straight form, the moment kicks a high temperature wheel by the principle of action reaction, and torque is generated. We solved this torque generating mechanism. We proposed the theory which can design the output power of the simple pulley type shape memory alloy engine. Furthermore, the validity of this theory was verified by experiment.

The purpose of this research is to develop a new technique for the turbulent drag reduction as the passive control. The pressure loss of three kinds of seal fur (Ribbon, Spotted and Harp seals) and an electret nonwoven fabric surfaces was measured in the channel flow using the water and glycerol-water (40 wt%). The data was compared with those of smooth and riblet surface. The drag reduction could be obtained for all kinds of seal fur surfaces; it was estimated to be 11.5 % on ribbon seal, 9.5 % on spotted seal and 3.5 % on harp seal for glycerol-water, while the drag reduction was not achieved for the electret nonwoven fabric surface.

本報告は球面運動において有限に離れた5位置が指定されたときに定まるプルメスタ点の座標の計算法を簡明な形で確立するため,最初に自由度2の2節リンク機構のパラメータと第2番めの節上に固定された円弧の位置決定変数の間の関係式を導出している.次にこの式を基礎式として計算法を確立するときにはプルメスタ点の座標が線形5元連立方程式および六次方程式を解いて決定できることを解明している.

Analysis is present of EHL traction with low-viscosity lubricating oils, which is the case encountered at higher temperatures. Extension is made of the approximate formula already derived by the authors, where it is assumed that viscosity, instead of viscoelasticity, predominates when the limiting Newtonian viscosity in an EHL film falls below a critical value, 10^5 Pas, and an Eyring viscous solution is employed. The rheological parameters representing the traction characteristics of an oil then become the effective viscosity-pressure coefficient and the representative stress, and they are expressed as functions of mean Hertzian pressure and bulk temperature. Calculated results are compared with experimental data obtained on a four-roller machine for two diesters showing close agreement.

Much difficulty has been encountered in cooperative traction of electric railcars and diesel railcars, because the structure and performance of the respective control systems are very different. Diesel railcars are characterized by more or less constant output from the initial to middle speed range and constant torque beyond the middle speed range. Electric railcars are characterized by virtually constant torque from the initial to middle speed range, with the output decided by notch order beyond the middle speed range. The authors propose a new control system for cooperative traction based upon an entirely new conception. This system changes a general notch order into a suitable notch order for the diesel railcar depending on the electric railcar's speed. The system was mounted on JR's electric and diesel railcars and tested on the main line of JR KYUSYU. Based on this test result, introduction of the system in commercial service was decided upon and practical operation began on April 29, 1989.

It is known that a swirling flow in a diverging pipe breaks down more easily than a flow in a converging one. In this report, experiments are made using diverging, converging and straight pipes, in order to clarify the relation between the shape of pipes and the occurrence of the breakdown. Swirling flow fields, that are realized by rotation of pipes, are measured by a Laser-Doppler-Velocimeter. When each pipe rotates faster than a certain critical value, a stationary internal wave occurs. The vortex breakdown phenomenon is due to the internal waves in swirling flows, as pointed out in preceding reports. In the diverging pipe, the amplitude of the wave is rather smaller than that in the converging pipe ; but the mean axial flow near the axial is fairly retarded, so that the flow reverses at the trough of the superposed wave component, and bubble type breakdown appears. A mathematical model is also presented to give a qualitative explanation of the effect of a sectional area variation.

The results of experiments on the thermal effect for tubes of different tapers are presented, and the effects of the tapering of the tube on the internal flow are shown. The results are summarized as follows: (1) With a tapered tube a higher temperature is obtained with smaller intervals of nozzle-tube spacings compared with the cylindrical tube. (2) With a tapered tube a higher frequency of flow oscillations and a shorter penetration length of contact surfaces which are considered to cause a higher temperature in the tube, together with stronger shock, are obtained (3) The velocity history at the open end is different for tubes with different tapers. When the taper is small, the amplitude of the velocity change becomes very small. (4) The pressure amplitude at the closed end becomes large for tubes with large tapers.

An experimental investigation of pulsating flow through a tapered curved tube is presented to study the blood flow in the aorta. The experiments are performed in a U-tube with the curvature radius ratio of 3.5 and including 50 percent reduction in the cross-sectional area between the inlet and the exit of the curved section. Laser Doppler velocity measurements are made for the Womersley number of 10, the mean Dean number of 400 and the flow rate ratio of 1. Flow visualizations are used to investigate qualitatively the nature of the flow, complementing the quantitative LDV measurements. The velocity profiles for the steady and pulsating flows in the tapered U-tube are compared with the corresponding results in a U-tube having a uniform cross-section. The striking effects of the tapering on the flow are exerted on the axial velocity profiles in the section from the latter half of the bend to the neighborhood of the inlet of a downstream tangent. A depression phenomena in the velocity profile appears at the position of smaller bend angle Ω and the degree of the depression against the cross-sectional averaged velocity is reduced. Strong secondary fluid motions occur near the bend exit and that leads a velocity profile to depress weakly in the downstream tangent. The value of β_m which indicates a uniformity in the velocity profiles decreases with an increase of Ω, but it rapidly increases just after the bend exit.

This paper deals with the laminar oscillatory flow of an incompressible fluid through a slightly convergent tube. The velocity distributions in the convergent tubes, whose convergent angles are in the range of 2~4°, are measured by a Laser Doppler Velocimeter. The flow in the convergent tube is numerically analysed by a finite difference method (SOR), without neglecting the convective terms in the Navier-Stokes equation. Experimental results agreed well with the numerical ones. The velocity profile of a laminar oscillatory flow in the convergent tube is quite different from the velocity profile in a straight tube of circular cross-section, even if the convergent angle is very small. The instantaneous pressure distribution in the convergent tube is uniform at each cross section as in a straight circular tube.
