This study is an attempt to clarify the relation between stage and auditorium in Adolphe Appia's theory of "LA MISE EN SCENE". Appia aimed at an unity between them. His idea cleared through Bayreuth festspielhaus and developped into the new step by experiencing Dalcroze method, eurhythmies in 1906. From the architectual point of view, there are two point about the unity; 1) proscenium arch 2) the side wall of the auditoium At the bottom, there are his concideration of the living body; actor and audience. New space appeared by the connection among body,lighting and space baced on the rhythm.

Concerning the external appearance of Chinese and Japanese modern architecture were investigated to Japanese students. Based on the SD method, two stages image tests were performed. And using the layer structure model of image, graphical modeling analysis and fuzzy outranking analysis were carried out. According to those results, "adjective pairs" that can describe the first impression of Chinese and Japanese modern architecture were extracted. And about the difference of processes for the evaluation of appearance, the "structure" was important to Chinese modern architecture and the "space" was important to Japanese modern architecture.

We considered the pictures of Hagi castle town and materials of Mohri family library, so the following points were obtained: 1. Besides the past results, we presumed some new conclusion about presumptive date about the pictures of Hagi castle town. 2. Hagi Clan used pictures to grasp residences and possessions of the vassals. 3. In the middle and late of 18c, Hagi Clan didn't prasp residences and possessions of the vassals well, because of usage conditions of the pictures.

The objectives of this study are to find out the actual situation of discharged patients' home modifications to mitigate the environmental gap between a recovery rehabilitation hospital and their own houses, as well as to identify their potential needs of house improvement. The results of this study shows: 1) Patients have many potential needs for home modification which is hard to be discovered by PT or OT at the one-time-only home inspection one month before discharge. 2)The typical suggestion from PT and OT is to install handrails while architectural expertise has limited opportunity to give professional advice, therefore their collaboration system should be established.

&nbsp;After Parkfield earthquake in 1966 and San Fernando earthquake in 1971, various aspects of near-fault ground motions have been clarified and the effect of near-fault ground motions on structural response have been investigated extensively. The fling-step and forward-directivity inputs have been characterized by two or three sinusoidal wavelets. For this class of ground motions, many sophisticated analyses have been conducted from various viewpoints. However, as far as a forced input is employed, both a free-vibration term and a forced-vibration term appear and the closed-form expression of the elastic-plastic response may be difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, the double impulse has been introduced as a good substitute of the near-fault ground motion and the closed-form expression of the undamped elastic-plastic response of a structure under the critical double impulse has been derived in the previous works.<br>&nbsp;In this paper, the double impulse is introduced again and the closed-form solution of the maximum deformation of the elastic-perfectly plastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system with viscous damping under the &lsquo;critical double impulse&rsquo; is derived. Because only the free-vibration appears after each impulse of such double impulse, the energy approach plays an important role in the derivation of the closed-form solution of the maximum elastic-plastic response of the SDOF system with viscous damping. However, it is difficult to treat exactly both of hysteretic damping and viscous damping even in the theory using double impulse. The quadratic-function approximation for the damping force-deformation relationship and the assumption that the critical timing of the second impulse is characterized by the stage of the zero restoring force after the first impulse are introduced to derive the maximum elastic-plastic response with viscous damping by using the energy balance formulation.<br>&nbsp;The validity of the proposed theory using the quadratic-function approximation and the assumption of the critical impulse timing has been investigated through the comparison with the critical elastic-plastic response under double impulse using the time history response analysis. The validity of the proposed closed-form solution has also been demonstrated through the comparison with the response analysis to the corresponding one-cycle sinusoidal input as a representative of the fling-step near-fault ground motion. Furthermore, in order to investigate the applicability of the proposed theory to actual recorded ground motions, two recorded ground motions have been taken into account. It has been demonstrated that the maximum response to the critical double impulse and the response to the selected ground motion coincide fairly well. This supports the validity of the proposed theory.

In this paper, the chronology of building techniques in Pompeii is examined on the following points. 1) Re-using of building stones and techniques. 2) Building techniques provide a terminus ante quem for the date of the construction. 3) Post work carries the weight of upper structures. In the first century B. C. rubble work containing re-used stone ashlars were simultaneously with brick and block works. This work formed the post, which lend assistance to walls in sustaining the weight. Conclusively this work does not directly mean the construction before the building containing brick and block works.

Residential energy consumptions for space heating depends on climate conditions, floor areas, dwelling structures, thermal insulation performances, types of heating supply systems, inhabitant preferences. A standard indicator of space heating services independent of above conditions is advanced based on actual measurement values on 61 dwellings in Japan area on this paper. The indicator is calculated using average room temperatures during a space heating period, room floor areas and numbers of space heating days. A space heating efficiency in a dwelling can be analyzed by examining the correlation between the indicator and energy consumption. The dwellings having electric storage thermal heating systems or electric boilers consume larger energy for their space heating standards. An efficiency of a space heating by air conditioners cannot be observed in this study.

This paper reports the results of experiments in which two astronauts evaluate the volume and impression of the laboratory room and the storage room in the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" of the International Space Station under microgravity, and 29 students evaluate the volume and impression of the two mockup rooms on the ground. The results are as follows. 1) The volume of the storage room of ISS was overestimated, or the volume of the laboratory room was underestimated. On the other hand, both the volume of the two mockup rooms were evaluated almost exactly. 2) Both the storage room and the laboratory room of ISS were evaluated as being "spacious", "not oppressive", "calming" and "comfortable". On the other hand, the mockup of the storage room was evaluated as being "not spacious", "oppressive" and "calming", and that of the laboratory room was evaluated as being "spacious", "not oppressive" and "not comfortable".

The 1855 Ansei-Edo earthquake caused severe damage to Tokyo (Edo) metropolitan area. The damage was the next to that in the 1923 Kanto earthquake. In this study, source parameters of the 1855 Ansei-Edo earthquake were estimated by obtaining a good match between the simulated strong ground motions by the empirical Green's function method and the macroseismic data (isoseismal map). The hypocenter of the earthquake is most plausible near the border of Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures at a depth of 68km, near the upper surface of the Pacific plate. The magnitude of 7.4 is the best estimate for interpreting the macroseismic data.

This paper studies the history of the Building and Repairs Organization affiliated with the Ministry of the Imperial Japanese Navy (MIJN) from 1872 through 1920, and the building engineers of MIJN. This paper shows the process of the Building and Repairs Organization expanding according to the Naval armament expanding plan since 1883. It shows the engineers' names, service period at the department, and personal histories. And it highlights the middle-ranked engineers who had come from the Building and Repairs Organization in each office, such as the Ministry of the Public Works, which assisted the architectural activities of MIJN.

When we review the modern settlements in Hokkaido began in Meiji Era, Tondenhei-muras are considered to be composing the first among the layers of developments. Here we would like to reveal the planning theory of them and evaluate how it worked up to now. By the method of overlay mapping analysis with field survey and reference of documents, we succeed to describe the general spatial model of Tondenhei-mura. Different from the established theory that explains the settlements emphasizing the reasons of national defense, it is made clear that most of settlements were carefully planned rather by rational reasons for cultivating farm fields, managing colonized communities, protecting from the severe climate conditions on topography. The model can be described of the composition of territorial orders of land use, oriented by the axis with the careful setting of central zone, creating spiritual symbol as a Shinto shrine, preparing common property for various purposes and common reservation land.

In Southeast Asia, the water level change and periodical wind can threaten their lives at times. I think it important to grasp how they cope with natural wonder and live comfortably. Therefore, I surveyed "the location of houses" "the relocation of floating houses, removal and vocational change" "the structure of houses" "everyday life," and "the microclimate of houses" of the villages of Lake Tempe in Sulawesi Island. As a result, I clarified some corresponding techniques. For example, residents move their floating houses to the center of the lake in the dry season and to the shore in the wet season. If the water level goes down, residents move to the land houses and do farming.

This paper analyzed characteristics of deliberation process draft of land law and amendment of urban planning law made by War Damage Reconstruction Institute after the World War II. In the immediate postwar period, engineering officers recognized necessity of the law about land in the city. They have begun to consider land law while studying related laws and regulations. This land law was considered from 2 ways of thinking one of the meaning as the method of multidiscipline urban planning including urban planning law and land readjustment act and the other meaning as the expansion type of the land readjustment act. As a result of examination, engineering officers made land law and bill to amend the urban planning law set up the new zoning for deliberate development and strengthened compelling force for the land rearrangement. After completion draft of land law and amendment of urban planning law, Ryoichiro Tsurumi examined proposals for changes. This draft was considered the land use planning divided in time.

The present report comprises a facility investigation of 11 guide dog training facilities run by 11 corporations as guide dog training facilities authorized by the National Public Safety Commission in Japan.The layout of each facility and the scale and configuration of the various rooms within are clarified based on categorization of the rooms into the kennel, joint-training, and administrative and management offices divisions, and the diversity among the facilities is discussed.Specific examples are cited to analyze the characteristics of the kennels and joint training rooms.

&nbsp;The near-fault ground motions have special characters and the effects of such near-fault ground motions on structural response have been investigated extensively so far. The fling-step (fault-parallel) and forward-directivity (fault normal) inputs have been characterized simply by two or three wavelets. For this class of ground motions, many sophisticated analyses have been conducted from various viewpoints. However, as far as a forced input is employed, both a free-vibration term and a forced-vibration term appear and the closed-form expression of the elastic-plastic response may be difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, the double impulse input is used as a good substitute of the near-fault ground motion and the closed-form expression is derived of the bilinear elastic-plastic critical response of a structure under this double input.<br>&nbsp;For guaranteeing the equivalence of the double impulse and the corresponding one-cycle sinusoidal input as a substitute of a near-fault ground motion, the equivalence of the maximum Fourier amplitudes of both inputs is introduced together with the equivalence of input frequency. Because only the free-vibration appears after each impulse of such double impulse input, the energy balance formulation using the kinetic energy and the strain and dissipated energy leads to the derivation of the closed-form expression of a complicated bilinear elastic-plastic response. It is shown that the maximum inelastic deformation of a structure with a positive post-yield stiffness can occur after the second impulse different from the case for elastic-perfectly plastic models. Furthermore it is made clear that, as the positive post-yield stiffness becomes larger, the correspondence between the double impulse and the corresponding sinusoidal input becomes better.<br>&nbsp;The closed-form expression is also derived for the non-critical case. The introduction of the concept of critical excitation enabled this derivation of the closed-form expression of the maximum elastic-plastic response. The validity and accuracy of the proposed theory are investigated through the comparison with the response analysis to the corresponding one-cycle sinusoidal input and recorded ground motions (Imperial Valley 1979, Northridge 1994, Hyogoken-Nanbu 1995). It is demonstrated that the proposed method using the double impulse is applicable to actual recorded pulse-type ground motions within a reasonable accuracy.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between spatial configuration and ceremonies in Heian-kyu Palace.This study presents the following points.1. The Dobisashi is an unique space that only used in Heian-kyu Palace, playing a role in the square with the gate and gallery in the Ugi (the ceremony in rainy day).2. According to the ceremonial documents about Heian-kyu Palace, the usage of the Dobisashi in the Ugi has been developed during the mid - to -late Heian Period.3. During the relation between the Dobisashi and Ugi, it's clarified that the Dobisashi in Heian-kyu palace a special space for Ugi.

This research examined staying behaviors in streets at midnight in Shibuya area, and evaluated sitting sensation of the outdoor elements continuously from 16:00 till 5:00 on the next day. The investigated results are summarized as follows.- The number of sitting people in the streets increased most at 23:00, and the sitting people's ratio to the people on the streets was the highest around 3:00 a.m. It was observed that people converted various interspaces produced by reduction in traffic or closing of shops into the comfortable staying spaces.- The outdoor elements evaluated that people could sit and talk or eat increased continuously from 23:00 to 5:00, and the elements evaluated that they could do such behaviors comfortably increased most at 23:00.- The possibility of supporting midnight staying behaviors based on the investigation and the interview was examined. It was considered effective to change the diversity steps close to the streets to the seating elements.

The aim of this research is to propose a method to predict the strength development of concrete using equivalent age. The experiment of strength development was carried out. Ordinary Portland cement, moderate-heat Portland cement and low-heat Portland cement were used for concrete specimen. Water cement ratio was ranged from 0.3 to 0.6. Strength development of concrete cured below subzero temperature was examined too. The result showed that the apparent activation energy in equivalent age equation depends on mineral composition of cement. Furthermore, the effect of freezing on the reaction rate of strength development was shown. Consequently, the strength development of concrete can be estimated from mineral composition of cement, nominal strength of concrete and curing temperature by the method proposed in this paper.

Daylighting in buildings has been discussed in the various fields in terms of its pleasantness in the room and effective use of natural resources. This paper proposes a new type of venetian blind which slat angles are different to guide daylight into the interior, indicates how to fix the angles of each slat, and verifies the effect of daylighting by an experiment and computer simulations. Using this blind, it would be possible to introduce daylight into the interior zone effectively. Furthermore, the luminance values on the window, intensity of the shadows, and illuminance values by the window would be restrained.

The purpose of this research is to observe the multi-layered-mixture of commercial accumulation in Akihabara. This paper will focus particularly on mixture of various business types and will create a three dimensional floor map for analysis. The summarised result are as follows: 1) The inter-mixed relationship within each building is composed of not only various business types, but old-new stores inter-mixed within a building. 2) When focusing on the change of Akihabara's commercial structure, the city had become widely diverse where each building is configured of several business types. 3) In order to identify the changes in each business inter-mixture type within Akihabara, a hearing survey was carried out. Through inquiring the local merchant association and traditional shopkeepers, it has been identified that it is difficult for buildings being occupied by one store to continue its business due to the lack of flexibility to meet modern day market needs. On the other hand traditional businesses and modern subculture stores are more sustainable due to its small in scale operation.
