<p> Contemporary open space planning is required both approach of science and function. As one of the functions of the green, there is a temperature mitigation function of green spaces to solve the heat island problems. So in the new development, planners should consider to effective greening in there. In the case of planning the open space with temperature mitigation, it is significant to analyze based on the output index as green space in quantitative and the outcome index as temperature mitigation effect of them. This study aims, from the view point of easy adapting for open space planning in future development, to estimate how much effect of urban thermal environment mitigation in subtropical climatic conditions by ratio of ground coverage.</p><p> We studied in Naha Shintoshin area in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. Naha Shintoshin area was returned land from USA base and had been developed by land readjustment project finished in 2003. The LR project area was 214 ha. But because of the limitation of lack of measurement tools and man power, we had to choose a part of area, 5508 m2, as our case study site in there.</p><p> The case study site is almost flat in topographical condition and planned in modern urban planning theory which has block parks, neighborhood park, comprehensive park, and greening residential district. Because of this site is an example of entirely new development in Okinawa and it is planned in neighborhood planning theory, this site was suitable as case study site.</p><p> Temperature measurements by hour was done at 39 spots where are in different environment such as in bank of a river, in park, on greenery street, and in residential parcels. The amount of measurements was 2846 hours. We set the finite difference between measurement temperature and temperature published Okinawa meteorological observatory as an explained variable and set land coverage ratio of the site as explanatory variables. The land coverage ratio was estimated by google aerial photos and was divided to tree, grass, water, bare, building and pavement.</p><p> Analysis methods are followings. At first, we examined the ratio of ground coverage which is superior effect of the temperature mitigation for each temperature range, time zone, mesh grid size in subtropical climatic conditions. (Sec. 3) Next, we analyzed the influence of the temperature distribution from the relation with the ground covering condition in quantitatively. (Sec. 4) And then this study considers the findings of temperature mitigation of open space as a green space planning theory. (Sec. 6)</p><p> And the consequences are followings. 1, It was confirmed that factors such as season, time zone, mesh grid size, affect the relationship between temperature mitigation and ground coverage. 2, It was confirmed from the single regression analysis result that the adjusted R2 becomes high in mesh grid size of 10m and 90m. This result means the natural land coverage has both effect of temperature mitigation in spot and wide area. 3, By principal component analysis, it was possible to obtain a multivariate regression analysis result avoiding Multiple correlations. 4, From the estimated temperature distribution of the target area, it was confirmed that the site that ration of green coverage is 20% or more, forms a low temperature zone.</p><p> Considering of these result with real green planning, 10m mesh effect should be able to use in planning of house scale, and 90m mesh effect should be able to adapt as a greening regulation in special district plan.</p><p> This study remains future subjects such as the multiple elements analysis and the continuity consideration to next meshes in wide-spread greenery land use.</p>

In many developed countries including Japan, it has been pointed out that the conventional intermediate group that stabilized society has been dismantled, and isolated individuals are exposed. On the other hand, in recent years, the group of young people who tend to build a strong human relationship locally and to complete the living area there has been drawing attention as one of the typologies of behavior that characterize the youth near the city center. They have been discussed mainly in the field of marketing in terms of their consumption behavior. Moreover, it has been pointed out that this group of youth tends to participate in regional events actively, such as local festivals and to have an orientation for local settlement. It is thought that their orientation for local settlement is based on local-oriented mind, which is formed with friends of elementary and junior high school days. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the process that the group of young people, as an intermediate group based on the experiences of elementary and junior high school days, forming local-oriented mind from group discussion and life story survey. There were three investigations and following was obtained:  1) The target youth’s sense of belonging to local area The local memories shared by the group were collected by group discussion under daily circumstances and classified into seven topics. Also, by analyzing the transition of conversation, it became clear that the topic related to the comparison with the city center is the important one linked with many topics. Based on the result, this paper analyzed how the target young people form a sense of belonging to the localities from the viewpoint of the distinction of behaviors in between city center and their local area. As a result, the target young people formed a sense of belonging to the localities by we-feeling; They do not pay attention to interpersonal attitudes, conversation contents, and clothes except for superior people in their local area. They try to be associate with someone carefully in the local are because they think the rumors spread very quickly. And unlike in the city, they can enjoy entertainment activities without considering trends.  2) The target youth’s formation process of Local-oriented mind Through interview of life story, it became obvious that the range of activities in junior high school days influences the formation of intermediate group by analyzing the local scope affecting the formation of intermediate group from the psychological local scope and places spoken as activity places by developmental stages of youth. Also, by analyzing the temporal and spatial changes of young activities that form local-oriented and its factors from contents of narratives, it became found that from the late infancy to the late adolescence, while receiving the influence of a friend relationship during junior high school, activities forming local-oriented mind is changing.  3) Consciousness for the living in the future and its background factors From the results of the survey on the consciousness for the living in the future, it became clear that the intermediate group itself is mediating the local-oriented mind and influences the intention of settlement and the positive participation of local events.

The aim of this study is to show the method of estimating the amount of energy consumed by facilities that can be reduced based on the data of the existing "visualization system" with the campus of "Hokkaido University of Science " as the development field. In addition, this research describes the development of an energy conservation support system with an interactive user interface function ("Interactive system") aimed at encouraging facility managers and users to conduct energy conservation. The results of the study are as follows: 1) Based on the annual use record and actual measured values of energy consumption by time of the "Lecture Bldg.", the amount that can reduce the consumption energy of the facility was estimated as the amount of energy consumed by lighting equipment and ventilation equipment. The amount of energy that can be reduced is 7.5% of the annual energy consumption, 2.4% of the fuel consumption for air conditioning of the "Lecture Bldg.", and it is clear that we can expect the energy reduction effect by introducing the "Interactive system". 2) The development of the "Interactive system" was carried out by the procedure of evaluating the existing "visualization system", estimating the energy consumption reduction effect by introducing the system, extracting the energy conservation measures, building the facility operation model, and creating the user interface .The "Interactive system" has functions of reading measurement data and facility operation status, analyzing / diagnosing functions according to set conditions, sending guidance messages, receiving facility use condition and thermal sensation of users. 3) We introduced the "Interactive System" to the "Lecture Bldg." on the campus, and conducted experiments using facility managers, students, faculty and staff as monitors. From the evaluation of the effectiveness, usability and usability of the system by the user, we clarified that the interactive user interface function of this system is effective for inducing energy saving behavior of users.  "Interactive system" is characterized by entrusting the execution of energy saving behavior to the judgment of the operation manager or facility user of the facility that received the guidance delivery. It does not require specialized facility managers, renewal of equipment and introduction of automatic control equipment. Therefore, it is a system that can be installed in buildings of all uses and scales and expected to reduce energy consumption even in buildings where energy saving measures are not progressing. We will continue to operate the introduced "Interactive system", confirm the operability and feeling of use and improve the system, and work to extract and improve the tasks for developing to other use facilities.

The purpose of this study is to make the meaning of Scale in Architecture clear by doing an analysis of various literatures which explain the terms of scale. The results of this analysis, the scale of architecture is not only the system of size in various levels (physical, visual, technological, economical, etc.), but also the allometrical relations between the proportions which exist in similar forms of different size each other.

This paper describes about the development process and methods of “Fuzoku-nojo”, the farms of Sapporo Agricultural School, and their roles played in the development of the adjacent regions. Since the establishment of Kaitakushi in 1870, the farmlands in Hokkaido were developed by governmental immigration division system. On the other, Sapporo Agricultural School established its own eight farms for the technical experiment and training for the young engineers by 1896. Both of the architectural and regional planning characteristics of innovative trials in such school farms and their influence to the adjacent areas have not been studied sufficiently so far. The authors describe that the rural areas adjacent to those school farms are distinguished from the other standardized development areas.

This research investigated the recent adoption of legal graffiti walls and mural paintings as preventative measures against illegal graffiti, and it outlined their advantages and limitations. Mural painting activities generally conflict with those of people engaging in graffiti, causing lack of contact between wall painters and graffiti writers. It has been reported that legal graffiti walls increase illegal graffiti in the surrounding areas even if they work in the early stages. Therefore, this research examined the possibility of mural painting activities for young people engaging in graffiti. It predicted that inviting public participation and cooperating with residents would lead to the prevention of illegal graffiti and to regional revitalization. Finally, the research experimentally produced two constructive and effective mural painting activities in Tokyo.

The purpose of this study is to examine the activity of architectural publisher KOYOSHA (1912-1944) from the characteristic of the publication and the persons involved with and is to locate its achievement within the framework of the history of modern architecture in Japan.As the result, below mentioned three points become clear; 1. Its activity is distinguished into three periods. 2. Those change is caused by relationship among the publisher and the authors. 3. Such process also indicates a role of architectural books, in response not only to theoretical promotion of the modernist architecture but also to social needs.

Principal component analysis(PCA) has been used in Architectural Planning and Urban Planning. However, PCA can not always project the feature of samples onto low dimensional space. Therefore another mapping technic should be desired in the field. In this article, non-linear mapping (NLM) is employed to make an image map of a novel, 'Industrial Complex with Time Slip,' written by Yoriko SHOUNO. PCA is also employed tocompare the maps each other. Meaning of the city is read by chasing the locus of scenes in the NLM map. Then it can be said that the NLM map is an image map of the city.

This study deals with building types and spatial composition of town houses in the old Beijing city. The author's own field measurement results indicate that there are two types of buildings. By studying the urban structure (such as the skeleton of streets, block composition and subdivision) and various other social considerations (including the population, real estate activity, and house tax), and by using documentary and pictorial sources, the author concludes as follows.The first is a town house with posteriorly continuous ridges, built in dense commercial areas of small blocks. The second is a town house which also spreads back, but with courtyards in the middle. This courtyard-style was built in commercial areas with bigger blocks, facing onto arterial streets. In both cases, town houses, due to the location, expanded their shop area and created diverse spatial compositions. This study also shows that the first type originated with squatters taking over streets.

It is mainly organized in the analysis about:- Education when Jumpei Nakamura received at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (ENSBA).- Education and impact on Jumpei Nakamura by Edouard Arnaud.Theory and educational practice of Edouard Arnaud, French Professor Architect-Engineer, teaching "Construction" lecture at the ENSBA, had great impact on Jumpei Nakamura's theory and educational practice.

This paper is the second part of a study of the acceptance of French architectural theories in Modern Japan. Focusing on Jumpei Nakamura (1887-1977), Japanese professor architect, this paper is intended as a consideration of the impact of French architectural theories on his pair of notebooks designated “Kenchiku-gaku-sôkô” (manuscripts of architectural theory). The notebooks are based on the studies of architectural theories and construction methods on French and Japanese references. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to explore a little further into the characteristic of the French references which Nakamura quoted to formulate his notebooks and architectural theory.

This study aims to clarify the eye fixation characters of sequence from car window. On this paper, first, we recorded the motion of the subject right eyes using eye-mark recorder, and described the difference of the eye fixation characters between speed condition of car window; normal and double speed. The eye fixation characters in this case signify the range of the eye mark, the object of the view, the distance between the subject's eye and the objects of view. Secondly, we clarified relationships the eye fixation character and the sequential landscape from car window. In conclusion, the speed variety of sequential landscape has influence on eye fixation characters. Finally, we varified the eye fixation characters by using quantitative description method.

Young's modulus and bending strength of 3 species of wood commonly used for engineered wood and Zelkova, hardwood normally used for traditional large building, heated up to 250℃ are measured at the elevated temperature and after cooling to the room temperature as an engineering basis for the structural fire safety design and the reusability diagnosis of large-scale timber buildings. The results show the both properties, either at elevated temperature or after cooling, are highly dependent on exposed temperature for 150-200℃ or higher, and correlation between the Young's modulus and the bending strength tends to become weaker with rise of exposed temperature. The bending strength at elevated temperature is found to converge while it is notably scattered at normal temperature.

A part of architectural space, sometime, has a sub-part which is morphologically same or similar to the part. This type of structure of architectural space is called "IREKO" in Japanese or nesting structure. The nesting structure generates variety in architectural form although it is very complex and its concept is not so clear. The aim of this paper is to make clear the concept of nesting structure and its characteristics. We give a couple of definitions of the concept of nesting structure through the discussion on an example of Chinese Rose Window. The first definition of nesting structure suggests relevancy to the fractal theory. The second definition introduced by schema grammar produces a theory of nesting structure. That is, a set of architectural space is expressed by a series of terms and the nesting structure is corresponding to a solution of an abstractive equation system which is defined by schema rules. We show that the equation system can be solved by algebraic procedure and a set of forms of architectural space which has a nesting structure is defined as the solution.

The aim of this paper is to examine Viollet-le-Duc's architectural ideology through the analysis of his thought on <i>Rose</i>. In his <i>Dictionnaire raisonn&eacute; de l'architecture fran&ccedil;aise du XI<sup>e</sup> au XVI<sup>e</sup> si&egrave;cle</i>, the doctrine of structural rationalism was invoked through his conviction that Gothic architecture was a rational affair of constructive logic. As well as the Gothic architecture, the rose window in the stone structure has its rationality and economy. In the entry <i>Rose</i>, Viollet-le-Duc viewed three ideas such as construction, composition and decoration, which played the very important roles in the progress of rose window in order to gratify the natural desire. Meanwhile, the functions of rose window are not limited in providing light, reducing construction, giving added solidity and withstanding wind pressure, but it has its movement based on the special system. Therefore, <i>Rose</i> is a work based on the system with its own reasons.

Forty-eight cases of collegiate lecture rooms were psychologically assessed by students during regular classes through a semantic differential technique. Multi-variable analyses were then applied first to extract the structure of evaluation and then to predict students' satisfaction which represented the first and primary factor, namely, “overall evaluation.” Other factors were “lecture content,” “acoustics” and “communication.” Spatial and environmental planning guidelines for enhancing students' satisfaction as interpreted from the multiple-regression equation which explained 72.3% of variance were lower students' density, higher level of illumination, curbing of natural lighting and increased main window area per total wall area. Larger room depth as well as larger desk size increased satisfaction. Illumination, however, should be given priority over room depth. Twenty to thirty percent of illumination increase should compensate twenty percent decrease in room depth.
