Interference from harmonic currents which are generated from home appliances has becoming a problem with popularization of various kinds of domestic electrical goods and OA equipment. This paper describes a new method to improve the power factor of a single phase sinusoidal current input converter. The method provides a sinusoidal input current without using an input current of sinusoidal standard wave form. Experiments confirm the power factor is about 100%. Moreover, the converter can be applied to speed control of DC brushless motors. For this purpose a new control method is proposed. The method uses a PWM control mode for the inverter under light load and a PAM control mode for the converter under heavy load. Overall, this improves efficiency.

This study analyzes and evaluates four transmission characteristics of the capacitive power transfer (CPT) with resonance coupling. A constant voltage source is used under all conditions. The target compensation topologies for the investigation are series-series (SS), series-parallel (SP), parallel-series (PS) and parallel-parallel (PP) topologies. The analysis results under the unified conditions describe the five transmission characteristics: (a) the equivalent maximum efficiency in four topologies, (b) the squared lower output power of the coupling coefficient of PS and PP topologies compared with those of SS and SP topologies, (c) the squared lower optimal loads of the coupling coefficient of SS and PS topologies compared with those of SP and PP topologies, (d) the constant unit power factor (CUPF) characteristics from the source in four topologies, (e) the constant current (CC) characteristics in SS and PP topologies, and the constant voltage (CV) characteristics in SP and PS topologies at the load variation around the optimal load. From these evaluations, both SS and SP topologies, which are superior in terms of the output power, are recommended when using the voltage source. Finally, the powering experiment in SS and SP topologies shows the effectiveness of these evaluations.

A unique generating system for Gas heat pump system (GHP) is presented. The GHP is an air-conditioning system, in which the compressors are driven by a gas engine. The proposed system is applied to the outside unit of GHP to feed the electrical equipments inside. The system utilizes a permanent magnet synchronous generator, which is connected to the gas engine, to realize high-efficiency and small-size. The generator is controlled by a converter with sensorless control technology to eliminate the position sensor. Another major topic is the “free-run startup" technique to start the converter when the generator is rotating. The system configuration and principles of the techniques are set forth, followed by experimental results which show that the system works properly and successfully.

Experimental investigation on short-circuit phenomenon through ejected hot gas between source-side terminals in molded case circuit breakers (MCCB's) was performed. The occurrence rate of short-circuit phenomenon proved to increase with the peak value of breaking current and with the order of breaking test. The conductance of the ejected hot gas was also found to rise with the peak value of the breaking current and with the order of the breaking test. These results indicate that the hot gas with high conductance causes the short-circuit phenomenon to happen. Then some effective means were taken in the MCCB to reduce the conductance of the hot gas. Decreasing in the conductance of the hot gas successfully prevented the short-circuit phenomenon from occurring.

This paper discusses a design method for a proposed integrated magnetic component for an isolated bidirectional three-port DC-DC converter (TPC). TPC comprises a dual active bridge converter (DAB) and a non-isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter (NBC); each converter is independently controlled with a transformer and a magnetically coupled inductor. To reduce the size of the magnetic components, an integrated magnetic component that can integrate a magnetically coupled inductor and a transformer is implemented. A 750-W magnetically integrated TPC prototype was constructed and tested to validate the operation. The experimental results show that the efficiency of the integrated TPC is above 90% for the entire output power range, which is nearly equal to that of the conventional magnetic component. As a result, the proposed component was 10% smaller than the conventional magnetic components, and the overall size of the integrated TPC was 33% smaller than that of the conventional one.

A inverter-fed permanent magnet synchronous motor with a rotor position sensor and a speed sensor is used in many industrial applications as a DC-brushless motor. In this paper, a strategy which determines the rotor position and the speed of the permanent magnet synchronous motor by using the instantaneous values of phase voltage and phase current sensing is explained.In a permanent magnet synchronous motor, the permeance of the stater magnetic circuit is altered by rotating the rotor position; the inductance of a phase winding changes according to rotor positions. Hence, the phase voltages and currents of the motor have close relations with the rotor positions. Measured values of phase voltages and currents and the values of the equivalent circuit parameters are substituted to the voltage equation of the synchronous motor. Then, we can calculate the value of the rotor position angle by that voltage equation. The rotating speed of the rotor can be calculated from the voltage equation by substituting the rotor position angle. In these calculations, we used a 16-bit micro-computer and a DSP, and for sensing phase voltages and currents, 12-bit high quality A/D converters are used.Experimental results obtained by using the prototype system were congruous values of the rotor position angles and the rotating speed.

For the better performance and/or the high speed running for electric rolling-stocks, high accuracy power factor control with PWM power converter fed by ac power line has become popular. It is practically easy to control actual power factor itself at the input point of the power converter on the rolling-stock, however, the more important is that at substations. Although there are some technical difficulties for detecting the correct voltage phase angle on the train, caused by, for example, interference from thyristor controlled converters, suitable target value for practical power factor can be calculated under reasonable conditions. Among some kinds of control concept, the instantaneous current control referring sinusoidal waveform is the most suitable solution for the Japanese Shinkansen. The test results proved the expected power factor control performance.

In a utility interactive photovoltaic (PV) generating system, a PWM inverter is used for the connection between the PV arrays and the utility. The inverter is controlled to keep the output power at the maximum point for the PV. Although the PV power can be easily found by using the measured PV voltage and PV current, the installation of two detectors in the system is indispensable to obtain the exact PV power. In the system operation with the maximum power which is fed into the utility, the PV does not always operate at the maximum point of the PV output power because of the power losses in the system. It has been reported that the use of the measured ac voltage or ac current in the inverter output side can exclude the system losses from consideration and achieve the system operation with the maximum utility power. In this manner, however, since the ac output waveforms of the PWM inverter consist of many pulse trains, the filter circuit may be necessary for the detector to get the exact values of the ac output.This paper proposes a calculation method of the utility power in the PV generating system by using a PWM current source inverter. In this system, the PV current only is measured and is employed for the power calculation combining the control parameter of the PWM inverter. As the proposed manner monitors the utility power instead of the PV power, the control which does not need to take the system losses into consideration can be achieved. This paper presents the calculation method of the power for the single-phase inverter-PV system and gives the experimental basic characteristics. Moreover, the application of the proposed manner to the three-phase PWM inverter-PV system is shown and the experimental results are given.

In AC electric Railway, three-phase voltage is changed into the single-phase circuit of two circuits with the Scott-connected transformer. If it becomes large unbalancing of the load between single-phase circuits, voltage fluctuation becomes large on three-phase side. Then, Railway Static Power Conditioner (RPC) was developed for the purpose of controlling voltage fluctuation on three-phase side. An RPC is comprised of a pair of self-commutated PWM inverters. These inverters connect the main phase and teaser feeding buses, coupled with a DC side capacitor such as a Back-To-Back (BTB) converter. In this way, the two self-commutated inverters can act as a static var compensator (SVC) to compensate for the reactive power and as an active power accommodator from one feeding bus to another.<br>20MVA/60kV RPCs started commercial operation in 2002 at each two substations on the newly extended Tohoku Shinkansen for compensating voltage fluctuation on three-phase side caused by traction loads, absorbing harmonic current. The results of operational testing indicate that an RPC can accommodate single-phase loads such as those of PWM-controlled Shinkansen and thyristor phase-controlled Shinkansen, and handle the exciting rush current of transformers, as well as compensate for harmonics successfully.

In the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line, LSM is controlled with the PI controller of velocity and phase locked loop. This controller includes integrating action and compensates the position steady-state error and velocity steady-state error. Therefore the Maglev train can be controlled according to the velocity pattern accurately and the error of stopping position is within 2.5cm. Power Conversion Substation of South Group converts the power in frequency (0-46.3Hz), current (0-1015A) and in voltage (0-6, 350V). The Maglev train is controlled within these limits. However when the train accelerates and reduces maximally, it needs the power more than the limits. Naturally output power is limited within the limits, the performance of the control system is getting worse. For concrete example, at the transition from acceleration to even speed or from reduction to even speed, the overshoot or undershoot of the speed occurs. If this condition occurs at the stopping, the train moves back. These movement are not so good for the riding comfort.In this paper, we propose the Improvement method of integrating action in case of the saturation of output current. Firstly we report the configuration and basic characteristics of the method, and then we show the experiment results .

The authors have proposed the VAPAR (Variable Active-Passive Reactance Circuit) which can generate not only a positive reactance but also a negative reactance applicable to a power circuit. To help understanding of a negative inductance, at first, the difference between a negative inductance and a capacitance is clarified by demonstrating simulations of series LCR and LLnR(Ln<0) circuits. Then the characteristics of the negative inductance is also exemplified by a dynamic model using a motor-assisted bicycle.

High-speed and high-precision weighing is required in industrial and medical fields. Recently, medical services have improved rapidly and the demand for medicines have increased. Because improper medication can lead to life-threatening symptoms, precise filling and weighing all medicines are vital processes. On the other hand, there are requirements from suppliers to increase production volume. For this problem, Reduction the time by applying vibration-suppression control for a weighing cell is presented. The weighing cell exhibits oscillating responses as it has vibration mechanism inside. This vibration increases the weighing time and then reflected-wave rejection is introduced to suppress the vibration. Because reflected-wave rejection is a phase-stabilizing method, the controller attains a robustness against modeling errors. As a result, the weighing cell did not vibrate regardless of existence of a load. In addition, lift-up operations of vial bottles with water by the weighing cell were also conducted. The water surface did not fluctuate and immediately settled. Reflected-wave rejection certainly contributes to reducing the time for weighing.

Recently resonant inverter type power supplies for microwave ovens have been examined, but the stability of the filament temperature and the loss of the transformer have not been examined in detail.We studied the relation between circuit parameters and the characteristics of the power supply. As a result we conclude that putting a resonant reactor in the primary side of the transformer brings better stability of the magnetron filament temperature and lighter duty of the circuit elements than putting it in the secondary side.Newly-developed power supply can be continuously controlled in the range of 5 to 100%. Its efficiency is about 85% which is about 2% higher than that of the conventional one. Moreover the weight is reduced to about 1/4.

The objective of this study is to estimate customer interruption cost by analyzing survey responses and comparative examination between it and the estimation value by the economic macro method or the example of America and Canada. The power interruption cost is considered as one of the useful index for evaluating the expansion planning or the operation of power system facilities from reliability. It is also considered to become more important index in the recent development of integrated resource planning in which both supplier's and customer's resources are equally dealt with. This paper reports the estimation results of customer interruption costs based on the three years survey from 1992 to 1994 conducted in HOKKAIDO and for various kinds of customers.
