We have developed a multichannel taste sensor with lipid membranes which can detect and quantify the basic taste substances in aqueous solution. The aim of the present study is to increase selectivity to adsorptive taste substances (bitter, umami and astringent taste substances) for quantification of taste by improving measuring methods. High selectivity to adsorptive taste substances is obtained by CPA measurement algorithm (CPA: Change of membrane Potential caused by Adsorption). High repeatability is also obtained by developing a cleaning technique of taste sensor.

In this paper, we propose a design method for a novel motor using magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) to enable the practical use of electric aircraft. The proposed motor can transfer electrical energy between a stator and a rotor via MRC, which does not require magnetic cores, thus realizing an ultralightweight design. Moreover, we detail the operating characteristics of the proposed motor and its equivalent circuit, analysis, and experiments. From the analysis, we clarify that the proposed MRC motor has a sufficient strength at an ultrahigh speed, and we describe its essential characteristics and the usefulness of its equivalent circuit. Further, our analytical and experimental results confirm that the proposed MRC motor can transfer electrical energy between a stator and a rotor, thereby generating torque.

This study reveals the characteristics of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) made by blanking (a) 20HX1300 of high grade low-iron-loss silicon steel (0.20mm thickness) and (b) 2605SA1 of amorphous alloy (0.025mm thickness). The blanking of the amorphous alloy is an innovative technology for the mass production of the high efficiency amorphous-alloy-motor. The impact of the processing methods on the magnetic properties are evaluated using the ring cores processed by the following methods: the wire cutting and the blanking. On the other hand, the experiment with the SRMs processed by the blanking evaluates the characteristics depending on the material. As first prototype, 70W-SRM (40mm thickness) is manufactured by blanking 1600 sheets of the amorphous alloy and adhesively laminating them. In the experiment, the motor efficiency of the amorphous-alloy-SRM is improved by 6.9p. t. compared with that of silicon-steel-SRM. In addition, the iron loss of amorphous-alloy-SRM is reduced by 78.7% compared with that of silicon-steel-SRM.

In this study, an effective combination of methods to estimate the magnet operating points in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed. First, the magnet temperature estimation is compensated with the initial temperature and magnet loss based on the error between the estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit and the estimated temperature obtained using the flux observer. In addition, stator loss is compensated based on the error between the measured temperature and estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit. Then, the flux linkage observer is compensated with the d/q inductance value using the magnetic equivalent circuit. A method of estimating the magnetic flux density of a permanent magnet is designed to estimate the magnetic flux density of the motor using a magnetic equivalent circuit reflecting the value of the measured magnet temperature and magnetic flux density in the permanent magnet's B-H curve. Unlike the rotor temperature, the stator temperature can be easily measured, and the magnet operating point estimation can be designed as a more accurate and error-resistant estimation method. Furthermore, simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Several types of electrified vehicles have been developed and launched as a solution for low carbon transportation. Toyota launched the first massproduced hybrid electric vehicle, the Prius, in 1997. With the evolution of electric components in Toyota Hybrid System, 15 million Toyota hybrid electric vehicles have been sold, and reducing 120 million tons of CO2 in the real world. These electric components have some compatibility with electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles.

This study presents a design method for the continuous switching test circuits of power devices. Depending on the relationship between the rated voltage of a DC voltage source and device under test (DUT), two types of test circuits are proposed. These test circuits comprise a cascaded buck-boost (or boost-buck) converter to achieve power regeneration. Based on analysis of the test circuits, a design method is proposed to ensure that any failure does not spread to the test circuit even when the DUT fails during the continuous switching tests. A test circuit is designed according to the proposed method, and its experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed design.

The switching frequency of power converters is continuing to increase with the demand for their increased power density. Therefore, the frequency band of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by power converters ranges from several kilohertz to 100MHz or more, thereby increasing the importance of EMI countermeasures in power converters. In addition, with the practical applications of smart grids and microgrids and the introduction of 5G technology, cases wherein power converters and information communication devices are placed in close proximity are continuing to increase. Thus, in societies wherein power converters and information communication devices are highly integrated, it is necessary to ensure electromagnetic compatibility based on a different concept. This paper presents a review on modeling and suppression techniques for the EMI generated by power converters and discusses future prospects in this field.

The ionospheric anomaly prior to the 2007 SouthernSumatra earthquake (M8.5) was observed by GPS receivers around Sumatra islands. In this paper, to investigate the three-dimensional structure of electron density in Ionosphere, a tomographic approach (Residual Minimization Training Neural Network; RMTNN) has been performed. The results of the tomographic approach are consistent with those of total electron content (TEC) approaches. We found that the significant decreases take place in the heights of 250-400 km, especially at 330 km height. But the height which gives the maximum electron density is not changed. The obtained structure is that the decreased region exists in the southwest side of Integrated Electron Content (IEC) (400-550 km altitudes) and in the northern side of IEC (250-400 km altitudes). Global tendency of the decreases area is expanded to the east with an altitude and it is concentrated in the southern hemisphere of over the epicenter. These resultsshow that the high capability of RMTNN method for the estimation of the ionospheric electron density distribution possibly associated with earthquake.

Owing to the robust structure of switched reluctance machines, high-speed operations are preferred to achieve higher power densities. Generally, at high speeds, single pulse control is applied. However, its control parameter set is not unique. This paper proposes an algorithm based on design of experiments that simultaneously allows the calculation of optimal control parameters for an operating area and the minimization of the total machine losses. The designed experiments are finite-element analyses (FEAs) considering both iron and copper losses. A Pareto search algorithm solves the proposed multi-objective optimization problem. The results for different response surfaces are compared considering the errors in torque production and machine loss prediction. A reduced response surface based on 15 FE-runs shows a mean error of 1.9%, whereas the maximum error is 6.3% for machine losses within the validation operating area.

Induction machines are used in a wide range of industrial applications due to their simplicity, ruggedness, and low price. Despite their robustness, induction machines eventually fail due to a variety of mechanisms. Most faults exhibit specific frequency components in the motor current spectrum, which allows for fault detection. Many classical fault detection methods have been developed for grid-connected machines with relatively fixed operating points. In inverter-driven machines with a wide operating range, these methods cannot reliably detect and classify faults. Machine learning methods have been successfully used for various classification tasks. This study therefore combines classical fault detection approaches with various fault classification algorithms to reliably detect induction machine faults over a wide operating range.The developed fault classification method is evaluated using steady-state measurements on an inverter-fed 5.5 kW induction machine. The algorithm shows promising fault detection and classification capabilities, achieving an accuracy of 97.4% over a wide load range.

Irreversible demagnetization analysis is complicated in motors with bonded magnets that have unique B-H curves and do not exhibit distinct knee points. We have proposed a permanent magnet assisted synchronous motor (PMASynRM) with bonded magnets and examined its demagnetization characteristics by assuming the relative recoil permeability (μrec) as constant to simplify the analysis. However, the present recoil loop measurements of bonded magnets show that μrec has different characteristics depending on the magnitude of the reverse magnetic field intensity at the working point of the magnet and temperature. Therefore, this study presents a demagnetization analysis method based on these measurement results and investigates the demagnetization characteristics of a PMASynRM considering the variation in μrec for bonded magnets. The results of the demagnetization analysis considering the variation in μrec are compared with those where μrec is assumed to be constant. The comparison results indicate that there is no problem with assuming a constant μrec of 1.15 in the demagnetization analysis of a motor with bonded magnets.

This study proposes a novel approach that employs the kernel method as a regression model to demonstrate the dependency of magnet flux linkage on the applied current, which is suitable for magnet temperature estimation. This model can estimate the flux linkage with a mean relative error of less than 2% in comparison with that obtained using finite element analysis. The magnet temperature is estimated by comparing the magnet flux linkage under loading conditions with the values obtained from the regression models built under fixed temperatures. The accuracy of the results obtained using the magnet temperature estimation method is approximately the same as that of the results obtained using the look-up table, suggesting that the proposed approach is suitable for non-linear motor property modeling.

Superconducting generators have many advantages such as increasing generation efficiency and improving power system stability etc. In Japan, 70MW class superconducting generators have been developed through the national project"Electric Power Application of Superconducting Technologies (1988-1999)". <BR>In this paper, performance evaluation of the rotor damper structure for the 70MW class model generator is discussed. Double-layered damper structure, which consists of a squirrel-cage warm damper and a single-layered cold damper was set as the target. As the first step, basic electromagnetic and thermal performances were obtained through the experimental model. In the following step, the 70MW model rotor damper structure was designed based on the experimental results and the rotor was manufactured. Evaluation of the damper structure of the 70MW rotor was carried out in the verification test from the technical view point of 'unbalance current capability', 'flux shielding' and 'generator reactance' etc. and satisfactory results were obtained. Consequently, it was proven that the damper structure had the performances to satisfy the requirements of the superconducting generators. Performances obtained from the experimental model, design of the 70MW model rotor and evaluation by the verification tests are described in this paper.

Effect of discharge inception voltage on electromagnetic noise spectra in VHF and UHF region from spark discharge at hemisphere-plane electrodes in atmosphere is studied. The discharge inception voltages are changed by several means, such as increasing gap length from 2mm to 6mm, or UV-ray irradiation, or increasing stress concentration at the electrode tip, or spreading dust such as cotton cloths, acylic resin particles, copper particles, or alminum particles on the plane electrode.When the discharge inception voltage is increased, macroscopic slope of noise spectra from 100MHz to 1 GHz decreases generally, that is, high frequency components of noise increase with thevoltages.These phenomena can be explaned by theoretical analysis based onToepler's Law of spakdischarge and Hertz's dipole EM radiation law. As the exceptional cases, low dicharge inception voltages by metal particles or by positive stress concentration at the electrode tip do not contribute much to suppression of high frequency components of the noise.

In general, diode rectifiers with electrolytic capacitors on the DC side have been used as DC power supplies for voltage source inverters. This type of rectifiers, however, causes many problems such as poor power factor and harmonics. Recently, voltage source PWM rectifier-inverters have been studied to provide the following advantages; (1) harmonic-free on both AC sides; ( 2) unity power factor on the input AC side; (3) power flow of either direction or power regeneration; (4) reduction of the DC capacitor. It is, however, difficult for a conventional one to regulate the capacitor voltage on transient states because of having only a voltage feed-back loop.This paper describes a voltage source PWM rectifier-inverter with feed-forward control of instantaneous power. Based on the pq theory, the instantaneous power which is calculated in the control circuit of the inverter is fed forward to the control circuit of the rectifier. The feed-forward control of instantaneous power makes a great contribution to sufficiently suppress voltage fluctuation of the DC capacitor on transient states. Transient characteristics are discussed and some interesting experimental results of a laboratory model are shown.

In this paper a dynamic circuit system model of active three-phase current-source PWM converter for Power Factor Correction is described on the basis of instantaneous space vector modulation scheme. The formulation of the discretized system and control algorithm to achieve the deadbeat responses of state variables in the utility AC power side low pass filter of this converter are evaluated and discussed from an experimental point of view. The system response of this converter is much faster and transient oscillations of both source current and capacitor voltage are suppressed effectively, though the state variable in the state feedback is only the current obtained from the precise current sensor interface circuit.

Taste can be measured using a taste sensor, which shows different electrical potential patterns for each food. The sensor has eight kinds of lipid membranes. The present study is concerned with the long-term measurements of milk and sensory analysis of milk. Each membrane was preserved in standard milk, and the tastes of five kinds of commercial milk were measured using the sensor preserved for a period of one month to six months in the same manner. It was found that calibrated data was comparable with data obtained other days, and that the membranes were used reliably fbr six months. On the other hand, richness of sensory test showed a high correlation with the ratio of milk fat using chemical analysis, as seen from the correlation coefficient 0.829. It was also found that there is significant difference among the four samples by performing a Kramer test (α<0.01) and F test (α<0.05). We used multiple regression analysis on sensor responses by use of the ratio of milk fat and the heat treatment of milk, and consequently found a high correlation between channel 4 and them. The correlation coefficient was-0.986 between the sensory test and ch. 4. Therefore, it was concluded that richness, which is the main taste of milk, can be quantified using the taste sensor.

We describe for the first time the basic illumination characteristics of lighting source using 10cd-class InGaN-based LEDs (an efficacy of 151m/W) under a driving condition of AC 100V at 60Hz. Several hundred white LEDs with series connections were arrayed on a glass epoxy substrate and were driven by adjusting a current of less than 20mA under the AC 100V. The dependence of temperature and injection current on both the emission spectra and intensity were measured. The white LED array indicates distinct two electroluminescence peaks at 460 and 555nm at room temperature, which are related to the recombination emissions from the InGaN MQW blue LED and from the YAG: Ce phosphor, respectively. We have obtained a maximum luminous intensity of about 10000lx at a distance of 30cm from the LED array, which is sufficient for the practical application. After operating for 1 hr, a temperature of the LED array increased up to about 65°C without a cooling system.
