A large earthquake occurred to the south of Cape Erimo, Hokkaido, at about 9 h 49 m (JST) on May 16, 1968, and severely shook the Tohoku and Hokkaido areas. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of this shock is 40°7N, 143:7E and 20km depth, and the magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale. After about ten hours of this main shock, the largest aftershock (M=7.4) occurred at the location 41°4N, 143°3 E and 20km depth. Recently, the southern part of Hokkaido was rocked by two huge earthquakes, one was the Off-Tokachi earthquake of March 4, 1952 (M=8.1), and the other the Off-Hiroo earthquake of April 23, 1962 (M=7.0) (cf. Figure 1).

1、2学期はそもそも瞬間の速さとは一体何を表しているのかという根源的な問いから始めて、冪零無限小を用いた微積分を高校1年くらいの数学の知識だけを仮定して(特に高校で微積分を履修している必要はありません)展開し、最終目標をベクトル解析におきます。3学期は線型微分方程式の一般論を、2次元の場合を中心に勉強します。さらに時間があれば、力学系と生物学の関係をRashevsky-Turingの形態形成modelを例にとって考えてみたいと思います。この科目はかならず数理科学演習と対にして履修してください。

The Indian subcontinent and Asian continent first contacted in the late Cretaceous (about 65Ma) and strongly collided after 52Ma because northward motion of the Indian Subcontinent slowed from 18-20cm/yr to 4.5cm/yr. Although the first record of uplift in Himalayan regions has been recorded during the Eocene. Major uplifts of the Himalayan Range and Tibetan Plateau and following sediment supply started from Oligocene through Miocene. Particularly, the rapid uplift stages of Himalayan-Tibetan regions have been recognized, at least. Around 8Ma and the last 1Ma based on sedimentological studies of marine terrestrial sequences. The micropaleontological studies in marine sequences revealed that the increased elevations in the Himalayan-Tibetan regions forced monsoonal circulation about 8Ma, which produced intense upwelling around the Arabian Sea and more seasonal climate changes of terrestrial sequences around the southern Asia. The hypothesis that uplift of plateaus and mountains caused large-scale climate changes during the Cenozoic is still unknown. However, an enhanced chemical weathering due to tectonic uplift in the Himalayan-Tibetan regions may be explained as the active driving force of the Cenozoic global cooling at the beginning of 50Ma.

Attosecond-duration, fully coherent, extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photon bursts obtained through laser high-harmonic generation have opened up new possibilities in the study of atomic and molecular dynamics. We discuss experiments elucidating some of the interesting energy redistribution mechanisms that follow the interaction of a high-energy photon with a molecule. The crucial role of synchronized, strong-field, near-IR laser pulses in XUV pump-probe spectroscopy is highlighted. We demonstrate that near-IR pulses can in fact be used to modify the atomic structure and control the electronic dynamics on attosecond timescales. Our measurements show that the Gouy phase slip in the interaction region plays a significant role in these attosecond experiments. We perform precision measurement of interferences between strong field-induced Floquet channels to extract the intensity and phase dependence of photoionization dynamics. Applications of emerging table-top ultrafast XUV sources in the study of core electron dynamics are also discussed.

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are often nonuniformly illuminated owing to shadows of neighboring buildings, trees, clouds, etc. In order to reduce the effect of shadows on solar panels, we propose the concept of a PV system with reconnection; this system consists of PV arrays that can be reconnected to minimize the mismatch loss, depending on the output of each of its module, measured at regular time intervals. In this study, the relationship between the output improvement with reconnection and the switching interval is shown. For a 3-kW PV system, under conditions of cloudlessness and cloudiness, a sharp difference in the output improvement relative to the switching interval is not observed. However, under the condition of shading, the output improvement sharply decreases relative to the switching interval; the output improvement at a 1-min switching interval is 0.15 kWh·h (+22.4%). For the 90-kW building-integrated photovoltaic system, during the summer solstice, a sharp difference in the output improvement relative to the switching interval is not observed. However, during the vernal equinox and winter solstice, when a large area of the PV system is shaded for a long period of time, the output improvement sharply decreases relative to the switching interval. The output improvement at a 1-min switching interval is 6.5 kWh·d (+2.9%) during the vernal equinox and 2.3 kWh·d (+3.7%) during winter solstice.

For a family of uniform distribution on the interval [8 - (1/2), e - (1/2)]' the informationinequality for the bayes risk of any estimator of e is given under the quadratic Joss and the uniform priordistribution on an interval [-c,c]. The lower bound for the Bayes risk is shown to be sharp. And also thelower bound for the limit inferior of Bayes risk as c -jo 00 is seen to be attained by the mid-range estimator.

Let X be an observable random vector and Y a random variable to be observedin future. Assume that the joint distribution of X and Y depends on an unknownparameter. In this paper we consider a way of the construction of a predictioninterval for Y based on X for a discrete exponential fq.mily of distributions. Inparticular we asymptotically construct the prediction interval in the binomial andPoisson cases, and give practical applications to the prediction of the number ofwins of the Japanese professional baseball teams and that of home runs of the playersin the major league of the United States.

In this article, I describe the characteristics of the evidential expressions in the Tokachi dialect of Ainu. I mainly point out the grammatical restriction of visual evidential marker sir which has hitherto not been described in any dialect.
