The purposes of this study are 1) to clarify the structural factors of "meaningful occupation" to make the concept of a new support service by qualitative analysis (n=19; mean age 84.1±5.5); 2) to analyze the relation among the restraint by oneself of activities in daily living and the physical, cognitive, psychological function and social participations by the questionnaire survey regarding fall (n=135; mean age 75.9 ± 5.9). In the first research, we investigated the important activities for older women by a semi-structured interview that was analyzed by text mining software. It was divided into two categories; the activity inside home and the activity outside home. By the network analysis, it showed that the positive words (i.e. "good", "can do") were concerned with words which were related with the relationships around the older adults suggesting that positive factors of "meaningful occupation" were connected to human relations. In the second research, 37% of subjects reported self-restraint activities related to mobility. Our findings showed that those who fell more than once limit their own activities in comparison with who fell once a year. The social aspects must be addressed when treating older population and those important activities for elders must not be restrained by fall.

AIM: To investigate the effect of mild steatotic liver on ischemia-reperfusion injury by focusing on Kupffer cells (KCs) and platelets.METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into a normal liver group (N group) and a mild steatotic liver group (S group) induced by feeding a choline-deficient diet for 2 wk. Both groups were subjected to 20 min of warm ischemia followed by 120 min of reperfusion. The number of labeled KCs and platelets in sinusoids and the blood perfusion in sinusoids were observed by intravital microscopy (IVM), which was performed at 30, 60 and 120 min after reperfusion. To evaluate serum alanine aminotransferase as a marker of liver deterioration, blood samples were taken at the same time as IVM.RESULTS: In the S group, the number of platelets adhering to KCs decreased significantly compared with the N group (120 after reperfusion; 2.9 ± 1.1 cells/acinus vs 4.8 ± 1.2 cells/acinus, P < 0.01). The number of KCs in sinusoids was significantly less in the S group than in the N group throughout the observation periods (before ischemia, 19.6 ± 3.3 cells/acinus vs 28.2 ± 4.1 cells/acinus, P < 0.01 and 120 min after reperfusion, 29.0 ± 4.3 cells/acinus vs 40.2 ± 3.3 cells/acinus, P < 0.01). The blood perfusion of sinusoids 120 min after reperfusion was maintained in the S group more than in the N group. Furthermore, elevation of serum alanine aminotransferase was lower in the S group than in the N group 120 min after reperfusion (99.7 ± 19.8 IU/L vs 166.3 ± 61.1 IU/L, P = 0.041), and histological impairment of hepatocyte structure was prevented in the S group.CONCLUSION: Ischemia-reperfusion injury in mild steatotic liver was attenuated compared with normal liver due to the decreased number of KCs and the reduction of the KC-platelet interaction.

In this study, an upper limit in the solar energy conversion efficiency which can be translated to a maximum potential algal yield of a large-scale culture is calculated based on the algal productivity model in which light and nutrient are made the growth rate limiting factors, and taking the design characteristics of the cultivation system into account. Our results indicate that for the production of low-cost biodiesel within the limits of the wastewater quality standards, that the culturing of high lipid content algae within a raceway pond would provide an appropriate solution for manufacturing biodiesel from algae. However, due to inefficient sunlight utilization and due to the large amount of fertilizer required in raceway ponds, a greater effluent recycle rate would have to be implemented to reduce the amount of fertilizer discharge to meet the wastewater quality standards and to maximize the attainable productivity of algal biomass.

We theoretically investigate the photocurrent generation efficiency of single-walled carbon nanotubes by considering the interplay between exciton many-body effects. We calculate the photocurrent by solving rate equations that incorporate the influences of the two competing processes, multiple exciton generation (MEG) and the Auger recombination (AR) processes. We find that MEG substantially enhances photocurrent generation in spite of the competing AR process. Our calculation shows that the generation efficiency is up to 150% higher than that without MEG.

Soil infiltration treatment (SIT) is ineffective to treat ammonium wastewaters of total nitrogen (TN) > 100 mg l−1. This study applied a novel two-stage SIT process for effective TN removal from wastewaters of TN > 100 mg l−1 and of chemical oxygen demand (COD)/TN ratio of 3.2–8.6. The wastewater was first fed into the soil column (stage 1) at hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of 0.06 m3 m−2 d−1 for COD removal and total phosphorus (TP) immobilization. Then the effluent from stage 1 was fed individually into four soil columns (stage 2) at 0.02 m3 m−2 d−1 of HLR with different proportions of raw wastewater as additional carbon source. Over the one-year field test, balanced nitrification and denitrification in the two-stage SIT revealed excellent TN removal (>90%) from the tested wastewaters.
