A recent development in magnetic fluids research is reviewed. The research activities in this field are increasing accompanied with the success of the synthesis of magnetic fluids with excellent magnetic properties. Apparent viscosity and rheological properties are discussed in connection with the particle aggregates in the applied magnetic field. As the thermo-fluid dynamics of magnetic fluids, recent investigations on the pipe flow problems and heat transfer control are taken up. Finally, as the representative examples of recent studies on the applications of magnetic fluids, various sensors, actuators, grinding device and heat pipe are explained.

超高齢社会が進展するなか,介護を必要としないことおよび認知症の予防が急務な課題となっている。そこで,われわれは高齢者の介護予防を目指した口腔機能の評価と管理システムを開発し,ケアハウス入所者において口腔機能の向上に役立つことを確認した。 今回は,本システムが認知機能の低下抑制に役立つか否かを明らかにする目的で,グループホームにて調査を行った。対象者は鹿児島県のグループホーム入所者(「GH-A」)および神奈川県のグループホーム入所者(「GH-B」)である。初回,6カ月後,1年後の検査に参加した GH-A12名および GH-B24名を対象に,口腔機能および認知機能の評価(MMSE)を行った。初回の口腔機能検査(①口腔周囲筋,②咀嚼機能, ③嚥下機能,④口腔清潔度)結果に基づいて,個々人に対応した口腔機能向上プログラムを本人および介護スタッフに提案・実施を依頼した。実施状況は,GH-Aは毎日,GH-Bは半分程度であった。 その結果,②咀嚼機能が 1 年後にGH-Aで改善した。③嚥下機能の指標であるRSST,オーラルディアドコキネシス「pa音」の回数が6カ月後に GH-Aで有意に増加した。さらに,MMSE得点は,GH-Bで1年後に有意に低下したが,GH-Aでは変化はみられなかった。以上の結果より,プログラム実施状況の影響はあるものの,本システムの介入により口腔機能の維持・向上を通して認知機能の低下抑制に貢献できる可能性が示唆された。

A collection of the Hepaticae and Anthocerotae made by T. Makino was studied and 85 species were here reported. It included many specimens collected in the central area of Tokyo about 100 years ago; they are of great value in studying the drastic change of natural environment in the metropolis during this century. In the collection were found such epiphytic species as Frullania osumiensis, F. parvistipula, Macvicaria ulophylla, etc., and such terrestrial species as Chiloscyphus polyanthos, Jungermannia atrovirens, Lejeunea japonica, Mannia fragrans, Phaeoceros parvulus, etc.; they have not been found in the area in many decades. A biographical sketch of Tomitaro Makino (1862-1957) and Kiichi Miyake (1876-1964)was also given to show their activities in the early time of Japanese bryology.
