A total of 160 autochthonous dengue cases transmitted by Aedes albopictus were reported from August to October 2014 in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. Ae. albopictus is a medically important vector of dengue virus which has been expanding its geographic distribution in temperate regions. The understanding of the distribution and density of biting Ae. albopictus during the dengue outbreak case in Tokyo 2014 is valuable and important to evaluate the epidemic-risk of dengue fever in other highly populated cities in Europe. Of the 160 cases, 134 patients had visited a same park located in central Tokyo, Yoyogi Park. Mosquitoes infected with dengue virus were collected from this park suggesting that the place was the exclusive center of dengue transmission. This study aimed to collect referential data to estimate the transmission threshold of dengue virus in terms of biting density of Ae. albopictus and demonstrated high transmission-risk areas of dengue virus in Yoyogi Park and the vicinity. The overall mean density of biting Ae. albopictus, 7.13/man/8 min, was sufficiently high for successful transmission of dengue virus, and areas with biting densities higher than the overall mean density were classified as high transmission-risk areas of dengue virus in Yoyogi Park.

The importance of the quality of early childhood education and care (ECEC) has been noted in different academic domains and the improvement of ECEC quality is a matter of the highest priority internationally. This paper reviews the empirical studies which examined longitudinally the impact of ECEC quality on child development. First, the focus is on the evaluation method. What indicators and scale are used to measure the quality of the structure and process? What are the advantages and limitations of each scale? Then, the findings of the longitudinal studies are reported. This paper addresses significant issues in determining and measuring quality for further discussion on quality research and also on a comprehensive ECEC policy.

Objectives: The aim of this review was to summarize the lessons learned from the experience in protecting the health of workers engaged in operations following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Methods: We reviewed all types of scientific papers examining workers’ health found in Medline and Web of Sciences as well as some official reports published by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan and other governmental institutes. Results: The papers and reports were classified into those investigating workers at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini NPPs workers engaged in decontamination operations in designated areas, and other workers. Regarding workers at the NPPs, many efforts were made to establish an emergency-care and occupational health system. Risk management efforts were undertaken for radiation exposure, heat stress, psychological stress, outbreak of infectious diseases, and fitness for work. Only a few reports dealt with decontamination workers and others; however, the health management of these workers was clearly weaker than that for workers at the NPPs. Conclusions: Many lessons can be learned from what occurred. That knowledge can be applied to ongoing decommissioning work and to future disasters. In addition, it is necessary to study the long-term health effects of radiation exposure and to accumulate data about the health of workers engaged in decontamination work and other areas.
