明治期の新聞小説は,新聞の看板として高い人気を博した.だが移ろいやすい大衆読者の興味を維持することは容易ではなく,新聞作家たちは外国小説をもとにした翻訳翻案も掲げるようになる.中でも,アメリカの廉価版作家Bertha M. Clay の原作は好まれた.無名のClayの作品には,同時代の日本の読者に支持される要素が多く盛りこまれていたからである.その要素とはどのようなものであったか.具体例を挙げて論じる.

君主制は世界最古の統治制度である。そしてこの制度は21 世紀においても存在し続けている。直感的には君主制はデモクラシーと矛盾するように思われるかもしれない。 本稿は、スペインの事例を概観しながら、なぜ依然として君主制が存在しているのかを明らかにする。具体的には、①君主制は優れた国家形態なのか、②崩壊した君主制と維持される君主制はどう異なるのか、という点について先行研究の議論を整理したうえで、スペインの事例と突き合わせることで得られる知見を提示し、比較政治学の理論に貢献する。 本稿での検討の結果、以下の知見が得られた。スペインの事例を見る限り、君主制から共和政への移行は、かなりの困難を伴い、前近代にどのような統治形態が採用されていたかという点が共和政の成否を左右すると考えられる。また、君主制そのものに疑義が唱えられないためには、国民との対立が決定的になる前に、君主が亡命するなどの国から立ち去ることが重要であるということがわかった。 The monarchy is known as the oldest system of governance, and this system still exists in the 21st century. If you make an intuitive judgement, you may perhaps think that the monarchy is in contradiction to democracy. This article gives an overview of the Spanish case and clarifies why the monarchy still exists. Specifically, after organizing the discussions of previous studies on (1) whether or not the monarchy is an excellent form of state, and (2) how the collapsed monarchy differs from the maintained monarchy, I will present the findings obtained by making comparisons with the case of Spain, through which I hope to contribute to the theory of comparative politics. As a result of the examination in this paper, the following findings were obtained. As far as the case of Spain is concerned, the transition from a monarchy to a republic is quite difficult, and it is thought that the success or failure of the republic depends on what form of governance was adopted in the pre-modern period. It was also found that it is important to leave the country, such as when the monarch goes into exile, before the confrontation with the people becomes decisive, so that the monarchy itself cannot be questioned.

計算機が高性能になったことにより,より大きな問題を解くことができるようになった.入力が計算結果として出力されるまでに演算器を通る回数も,問題の規模と反復回数に応じて大きくなった.計算アルゴリズムの中には,演算器を通る回数が増えると誤差が蓄積していくものがある.このようなアルゴリズムを,より高性能な計算機を用い大規模な問題に対して適用するためには,より高精度な浮動小数点演算が必要である.ところが,高精度な浮動小数点数を扱うハードウェアは市販品としては少なく,結果としてソフトウェア実装を用いるのが一般的であった.ソフトウェアによる実装は幅広い環境で動作させることができる利点がある一方,性能を出しにくいという欠点がある.性能が出ない場合,そもそも高精度な浮動小数点数を扱う必要性は低い.本研究では,IEEE 754 規格を拡張して,8 倍精度 (256-bit) 浮動小数点数を定義した.評価では,POWER7 マシンでの倍精度の演算と,8 倍精度演算の 64 ビットPowerPC アセンブリでの実装との性能を比較し,8 倍精度が倍精度の 1/44 程度の性能の劣化になることを確認した.ハードウェア実装として,CPU の FSB に FPGA が結合された,Convey HC-1 を用いて,高性能な演算器を実装した.この FPGA ベースの実装を用いた場合,POWER7 の 8 コアのシステムに比べ,約 4.5 倍の 8 倍精度浮動小数点処理性能を実現した.The faster the processor becomes, the larger grows the size of the problem that the processor is capable of solving. The number of operations that are applied to input data is subject to the size and the number of iterations. There are algorithms where the error accumulates as the size or the number of iterations increases. To apply these algorithms to the larger set of problems that are solved on the next-generation computers, a higher-precision floating point format is required. Notwithstanding the need, there are little support for arithmetic on floating point numbers of quadruple or more precisions. When they really needed it they tend to implement them using software. Using software to process higher-precision floating point number benefits from portability, but at the grave cost of the performance. When the performance is limited, we often do not need higher precision floating point numbers in the first place. We propose an extension to the IEEE 754 floating point number formats to define a octuple-precision (256-bit) floating point numbers. We compared the performance of our octuple precision implementation to the double-precision operations on IBM POWER7. On POWER7, octuple precision operations take about 44 times more processing time than double-precision counterparts. We implemented FPGA-based arithmetic unit for the data format on Convey HC-1 system, where FPGA chips are connected to the host using the front side bus. On this system, octuple precision operations are 4.5 times faster than those on the 8-core POWER7 system.

「シュピーゲル」誌のベストセラーリストには,ミヒャエルエンデの作品「はてしなき物語」が3年3カ月連続1位を占め続けた。これはドイツ語の本で戦後最大の成功作品といえる。「読者」の少年バスチャンがその本の中に自ら入って,そのファンタジーの世界の中で多くを経験し,迷い,問い,考え,失敗しつつ,精神的成長を遂げ,自己に目覚めるさまを,子供向けに,文章的には平易に,ファンタスチックな物語として書かれている。またそれと同時に,登場人物やイメージの多義性でもって,自由自在に物語の中で遊ぶという巧みな構成がなされ,ファンタジーを躍動させる機会を失った20世紀の大人に間接的ではあっても,ファンタジーやポエジーが,大人の世界に広がれば,現実社会のゆがみも是正される可能性を示唆した含蓄のある大人向けの作品でもある。

大規模な設備が不要で, 被検者に対しても様々な負担がかからない歩行分析を検討する目的で, 痙直型脳性麻痺児20名, 正常児10名を対象に側方からの映像歩行解析を行いスティックピクチュアにより定量化した。その結果, crouching gait を呈する脳性麻痺群と正常群との間に歩行速度, 股関節・膝関節の運動性, 歩幅, 立脚期/遊脚期の比率との間に有意差が認められたが, 上下の重心動揺は有意差が認められなかった。また脳性麻痺群において, 歩幅と歩行速度の間の相関傾向が, 正常児群において, 年齢と歩行速度の間の相関関係がそれぞれ認められ, その他のパラメーターも含め crouching gait の特徴を定量化により示すことができた。

Sakurajima Volcano consists of two main stratovolcanoes, Kitadake and Minamidake, which are composed of pyroclastic rocks and lava flows of pyroxene andesites and dacites. The basement rocks are composed of sedimentary rocks such as shale, sandstone, and acidic tuff, welded tuff, and granitic rocks. Geomorphology, large-scale historic eruptions, and the classification of surface textures of andesitic lava flows are briefly summarized. Volcanic history on the basis of the correlation between tephrochronology and the welded pyroclastic deposits is also presented. Taisho and An-ei lavas extruded at the later stage of the eruptions contain microphenocrysts of olivine. Orthopyroxenes of Bunmei pumice of later stage are rich in En content than those of early stage. These facts suggest that the volcanic products of the large eruptions were derived from zoned magma chambers.
