Many educational and psychological researchers determine the sample size in their research without any guideline except for the vague “as many as possible” principle. This article presents easy-to-use tables for determining the sample size in a research involving the use of the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. To use the tables, the researcher needs to specify the expected size of the sample correlation and the desired width of the 95% or 99% confidence interval for the population correlation. The construction of the tables is based on the large sample theory with Fisher's Z transformation.

Three probabilistic indices were proposed for interpreting major types of statistical results obtained in behavioral research:the probability of concordance as an index of correlation, and two versions of the probability of dominance being indices of mean difference in the case of randomized and paired data, respectively. Charts for finding confidence intervals for their population values were provided. The relationships of these indices with certain nonparametric statistics were also noted.

This article is intended to provide an overview of the methodological issues in the use of statistical tests in educational and psychological research. First, an exposition is made of those basic aspects of the theories which are not covered in typical applied statistics textbooks and which are often misunderstood. Then such recent efforts to improve the use of statistical tests as power analysis and effect-size estimation are summarized. The fainal section of the article discusses issues concerning the assumptions and interpretations of statistical tests, generalization of research results, and statistics education for prospective researchers.

In this article, I have selected and will comment on three topics from the papers in this special issue: power analysis, Bayesian hypothesis testing, and Bayesian statistical modeling. The major problem in power analysis is the quantitative evaluation of effect size, and this problem is shared in the estimation of effect size. Bayesian hypothesis testing is theoretically superior to classical null hypothesis testing. However, setting prior distributions properly continues to be difficult to overcome. Bayesian statistical modeling changes the role of statistics in psychological research and is promising in many aspects. However, the ease of computation can mask the necessity of careful thinking in modeling, which includes setting prior distributions. I also will discuss future statistics education in the era of rapid developments in methodology, as documented in this special issue.

COMPASS is an assessment test based on the cognitive model of mathematical problem solving. This test diagnoses components of mathematical ability which are required in the process of understanding and solving mathematical problems. The tasks were selected through the case studies of cognitive counseling, in which researchers individually interview and teach learners who feel difficulty in particular learning behavior. The purpose of COMPASS is to provide diagnostic information for improving learning process and methods of class lessons. Features of COMPASS include: The time limitations are set for each task to measure the target component accurately; questionnaires are incorporated to diagnose orientation toward learning behavior. The present paper aims to introduce the concept and the tasks of COMPASS to show how cognitive science contributes to school education through the development of assessment tests.
