Stress-related research in psychology has traditionally focused on both understanding and reducing stress responses. This paradigm has changed in recent years to more detailed studies on recovery from extreme stress responses and on growth. Therefore, in addition to paradigms of the past, it has become necessary to develop a process model that includes recovery from psychological maladaptation and trauma, as well as growth. Such a model is expected to facilitate new approaches to both maintaining and promoting well-being during the total lifespan of an individual, as well as to preventing the recurrence of maladaptation. This study focused on “resilience,” “posttraumatic growth,” and “mindfulness,” which are areas that are attracting the attention of researchers working in fields related to stress research. Moreover, a model of recovery from and growth after difficult situations is suggested by applying these concepts.

This study investigated the relationship between athletes’ mindfulness and future decrements in performance. Participants were 116 university athletes (male = 63, female = 53, unknown = 3, mean age = 19.25, SD = 0.98). The participants completed a questionnaire comprising a few questions related to socio-demographic variables, the Athletes Mindfulness Questionnaire (AMQ), and the Athletes Performance Decrement Questionnaire (APDQ) at time 1 and time 2 (4–7 months after time 1). The results of a cross-lagged effects model revealed that AMQ score at time 1 was positively associated with AMQ score at time 2 and negatively associated with APDQ score at time 2. However, APDQ score at time 1 was positively associated only with APDQ score, but not AMQ score, at time 2. This study’s results indicated that athletes’ mindfulness is unidirectionally associated with decrements in performance. This implies that increasing mindfulness may be an effective method for preventing impairments in athletic performance arising from psychological factors.

The relationship between mindfulness, psychological competitive abilities and mood states were investigated among Japanese university athletes.Athletes (N=233, 169 men and 64 women, mean age 18.51 years, SD=1.16) responded to a questionnaire package comprising the Athletes Mindfulness Questionnaire, the Diagnostic Inventory of Psychological Competitive Ability for Athletes 3 (DIPCA. 3), and the Japanese version of the Profile of Moods States short version (POMS).Results indicated that athletes with high compared to low mindfulness scores had higher scores for self-control, ability to relax, concentration, confidence, decision, judgment, as well as higher total DIPCA. 3, and lower score for total POMS scores. Furthermore, mediation analyses indicated direct and indirect associations between mindfulness and total mood disturbance through self-control and ability to relax skills of the DIPCA. 3.These results suggest that mindfulness is one predictor of psychological aspects of performance and mental health of athletes.

現在, 人工知能の分野を先頭に, 科学的研究と応用的実践の方法に大きな変革が起きている. それは, 一般的仮説を検証してその成果を現実に適用するトップダウン型の方法論から, 現実の多量なデータに基づいてアウトカムを予測する最適モデルを個別に構築していくボトムアップ型の方法論へのパラダイムシフトである. 近い将来, メカニズムが複雑で個人差が大きな慢性疾患や心身医学的な問題には, 患者本人の膨大なデータに基づくボトムアップ型のアプローチが不可欠になるのではないだろうか. すでに, スポーツや教育などの実践方法においても同様のパラダイムシフトが起きており, 自律訓練法などの心身医学療法を臨床的に活用する場合にも, そのアプローチの違いが劇的な効果の差を産み出す可能性がある. 本稿では, それらがどのようなものか解説するとともに, 自律訓練法を題材として, 研究と実践における2タイプのアプローチの違いを具体的に提示する.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of transient exercise on the mood in people with sensory sensitivity. The participants were 23 university students. They were randomly assigned into two groups and were required to participate in a rope-jumping exercise for 10 min. The results showed that the relaxed mood of participants with low sensory thresholds significantly decreased and was lower than that of participants with standard sensory thresholds, and their pleasurable mood was stabilized. These results suggest that people need to select adequately intense exercises or alternative interventions depending on their level of sensitivity.

Athletes who train and compete despite health problems are frequently found in competitive sports. In recent years, this phenomenon has been associated with presenteeism that has been studied mainly in occupational health. The research subject is a laborer. Recently, Meyer and Thiel (2018, pp.51-52) applied the concept of presenteeism to athletes as “sickness presenteeism,” which is defined as in the sports context “as training or competing despite having a health problem.” Sickness presenteeism possibly leads to mental illness, burnout, and exacerbation of illnesses and injuries of athletes. Although there are many studies on presenteeism in occupational health, very little exist in sports science. Therefore, this study reviews the literature to investigate presenteeism and its research potential with athletes by examining eight published studies; five by Mayer and his research group. This review focuses on the model of presenteeism created by Mayer and introduces the measurement methods, factors, and influences of presenteeism. The influences of presenteeism can be both negative and positive; therefore, athletes are conflicted about competing while having health problems. Finally, we described the possibilities and prospects for presenteeism research with athletes in Japan.

This study investigates the relationship among athletesʼ mindfulness, alexithymia, and burnout.The participants were 353 athletes (male=223, female=130, mean age=20.54, SD=5.74); they completed a questionnaire comprising the Athletes Mindfulness Questionnaire (AMQ), Sport Alexithymia Scale (SAS), and Burnout Scale for University Athletes (BOSA). The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated, and structural equation modeling was conducted to examine the relationship among AMQ, SAS, and BOSA.The calculated Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients showed that the total AMQ score was significantly negatively correlated with SAS and BOSA. Furthermore, the total SAS score was significantly positively correlated with BOSA. The results of the structural equation modeling revealed good fit indices and explained 41% of the variance in SAS and 30% of the variance in BOSA. In the model, AMQ was directly associated with SAS and BOSA. AMQ was also indirectly associated with BOSA through SAS.The results of this study confirmed that athletesʼ mindfulness directly and indirectly affected athletesʼ burnout by decreasing alexithymia. These results suggest that providing mindfulness training to athletes may be an effective intervention for alleviating their mental health problems.

This study examined the correlation between athletes’ grit and burnout using linear and quadratic regression analyses. Study participants comprised of 314 university athletes who answered a questionnaire on socio-demographic variables, the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), and the Burnout Scale for University Athletes (BOSA). The multiple regression analyses showed negative linear correlations between grit and burnout subscale or total burnout scores. Furthermore, the relationship between the squared term of perseverance and interpersonal exhaustion, team devaluation, and burnout were positively significant, and the squared term of grit was positively connected to interpersonal exhaustion and team devaluation in BOSA. The results indicate that if grit or perseverance were found to be too high, athletes were inclined to experience interpersonal exhaustion, team devaluation, and burnout easily.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that includes attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity as the core symptoms. Studies have reported that secondary symptoms of ADHD people include high trait anxiety, low self-esteem, and low self-acceptance. This two-part study investigated the efficacy of autogenic training (AT) for ADHD people. AT is considered to be effective for relieving anxiety, improving self-esteem, and self-acceptance. In Study 1, college students and ADHD people were compared to identify the psychological characteristics of ADHD people. In Study 2, ADHD people were randomly divided into an intervention and control group, and ADHD participants in the intervention group experienced an eight-week AT intervention. Results indicated that trait anxiety decreased significantly in the AT group. Moreover, there were improvements in self-esteem, and attention control, as well as a remarkable improvement in unconditional self-acceptance in the AT group (ηp2=.55) compared to the control. These results indicate that AT is effective for relieving anxiety, improving self-esteem and attention control, as well as promoting unconditional self-acceptance in ADHD people.

In Japanese society, intensifying competition in several professional arenas is expected to gradually continue, and it is said that a “super competitive society” will develop in the near future. Under such circumstances, the psychological, physical, and interpersonal burdens imposed on people will become more significant, and as a result, it is expected that health problems, performance inhibitions, and dilution of social relations will worsen. As a means of addressing this issue, Japanese society must adjust its solution from that of traditional Western methods such as the top-down approach to a new strategy. This strategy is a body-to-mind approach based on the bottom-up approach transmitted in Oriental culture.
