The three-dimensional topological insulator is a novel state of matter characterized by two-dimensional metallic Dirac states on its surface. To verify the topological nature of the surface states, Bi-based chalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and their combined/mixed compounds have been intensively studied. Here, we report the realization of the quantum Hall effect on the surface Dirac states in (Bi1−xSbx)2Te3 films. With electrostatic gate-tuning of the Fermi level in the bulk band gap under magnetic fields, the quantum Hall states with filling factor ±1 are resolved. Furthermore, the appearance of a quantum Hall plateau at filling factor zero reflects a pseudo-spin Hall insulator state when the Fermi level is tuned in between the energy levels of the non-degenerate top and bottom surface Dirac points. Ocean acidification resulting from increases in present and future atmospheric CO2 levels could seriously affect diverse coastal and oceanic ecosystems. In this work, we determine that a significant trend in ocean acidification is superposed on the large seasonal and interannual variabilities of acidity in surface waters off the south coast of Honshu, Japan, based on our repeated observations of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), total inorganic carbon (TCO2), and pH. Multiple regression analysis of TCO2 as a function of temperature, salinity, and timing of observations shows that TCO2 increased at a rate of + 1.23 ± 0.40 μmol kg^[-1] yr^[-1] for the period 1994-2008, while no long-term change has been determined for total alkalinity calculated from TCO2 and pCO2 in seawater. These results indicate that pH and the aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) are decreasing at a rate of -0.020 ± 0.007 decade^[-1] and -0.12 ± 0.05 decade^[-1], respectively. If future atmospheric CO2 levels keep increasing as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emission scenario A1FI, which postulates intensive fossil fuel use associated with very rapid economic growth, a further reduction of -0.8 to -1.0 in Ωarag is likely in the next 50 years. Such a rapid reduction of Ωarag could have negative impacts on a variety of calcareous organisms.

フデヒタチオビ属は熱帯太平洋からはこれまでVolutomitra vaubani Cernohorsky, 1982のみが知られていたがニューカレドニア沖の水深285∿525 mから第2種目の新種V. glabellaを記載する。本種は前種と同所的に分布するが, 成殻サイズが大きく(17∿25 mm), 色彩美麗で, 胎殻が大きい(平均径1440μm, 前種は1030μm)。

Developing effective behavioral and psychological mechanisms for coping with social stress was very important in human evolution because humans evolved as social beings. The aggressive and post-aggressive behavior of 30 boys aged 7–11 years was observed during free play in summer camp with the standard “post-conflict—matched control” method (de Waal and Yoshihara, 1983). The focals were the victims of the conflict. Saliva samples for examination of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels were taken from each boy in 5 cases: 10 minutes after a conflict with and without reconciliation, matched-control samples next day and morning samples for the basal level. Every boy filled in a sociometry form, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, Eysenk Personality test and the Revised Children's form for the Manifest Anxiety Scale. The stress-reduction role of peacemaking was supported on the physiological level. The level of stress-related hormones was higher when no reunion occurred.

We report on the characteristics of 9 bb^^- pair events produced by a 600 GeV/c π^- beam and detected in the hybrid emulsion spectrometer of Fermilab experiment E653. The measured lifetimes for samples of 12 neutral and 6 charged beauty hadrons are τ_<b^0>=0.81^<+0.34+0.08'>_<-0.22-0.02> ps, and τ_<b^±>=3.84^<+2.73+0.80>_<-1.36-0.16> ps.

Five Japanese Black embryo transfer calves from a single embryo flush, 30 to 45-days-old, including 4 live animals for clinical examination and 1 dead for necropsy, were presented with a history of decreased milk intake and hypoproteinemia. Consistent clinicopathological abnormalities in the 4 calves presented for clinical evaluation included hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperbilirubinemia, increased creatine phosphokinase activity, and proteinuria. Four calves ultimately were necropsied and all had histologic evidence of immune complex glomerulonephritis. Glomerulonephritis in these calves was hypothesized to have resulted from the interaction of passively acquired antibodies at birth and active immunization at 7 and 28 days of age with a Salmonella Typhimurium core antigen vaccine.

The present study implements long-term surface observed radiation data (pyranometer observed global flux and sky radiometer observed spectral zenith transmittance data) of multiple SKYNET sites to validate water cloud optical properties (cloud optical depth COD and effective radius Re) observed from space by MODIS onboard TERRA and AQUA satellites and AHI onboard Himawari-8 satellite. Despite some degrees of differences in COD and Re between MODIS and AHI, they both showed common features when validated using surface based global flux data as well as cloud properties retrieved from sky radiometer observed zenith transmittance data. In general, CODs from both satellite sensors are found to overestimated when clouds are optically thin. Among a number of factors (spatial and temporal variations of cloud, sensor and solar zenith angles), the solar zenith angle (SZA) is found to have an impact on COD difference between reflectance based satellite sensor and transmittance based sky radiometer. The Re values from the sky radiometer and satellite sensor are generally poorly correlated. The difference in Re between the sky radiometer and satellite sensor is negatively correlated with COD difference between them, which is likely due to the inherent influence of Re retrieval precision on COD retrieval and vice versa in transmittance based sky radiometer.

西オーストラリアにおいてリトルペンギン(Eudyptula minor)の採餌生態に関する研究を行った。これまでこの鳥の海での行動に関することはほとんどわかっていなかった。この研究には2つの目的があり、1つは基礎的な生態研究で、もう1つは個体群の保護、管理に役立つ情報を得ることであった。野外調査は2001年9月と2002年8月にオーストラリア、パース近郊の動物園およびペンギン島のリトルペンギン繁殖地で、共同研究者のDr.B.C.Cannell(マードック大学)とともに実施した。Dr.Cannellはこの研究における個体群の保護、管理に関わる部分を担当した。現地ではデータロガーの装着回収、ヒナの計測、餌生物の採集を行った。得られたデータは日本で解析し、この種において初めて潜水採餌戦略に大きな個体差があることを発見した。これはすでに論文としてまとめられ、現在Waterbirds(国際学術誌)で印刷中である。他に2つの論文を準備中であり、1つはB.C.Cannell et al.によるリトルペンギンの潜水行動の特徴を記載したもので、本種の保護と管理には海中における施策が不可欠であることを示している。もう1本は加速度データロガーを用いたリトルペンギンの詳細な行動時間配分に関するものである。潜水採餌戦略の個体差に関しては2001年12月に国立極地研究所で開催された極域生物シンポジウムにおいても発表した。
