The sport teams owned by corporations have contributed to Japanese competitive sports since the Second World War. But in the 1990s some corporations abolished their teams because of the economic recession. In this tough situation, recently those corporations that haven't chosen to discontinue their teams have tried to change "corporate teams" into "club teams" instead of abolishing them. The patterns of club teams are various, but a common element is that they attempt to develop strong connections between the team and their local area. I would like to take up the "Sakai Blazers", which was established in 2000 with the aim of becoming a club team strongly rooted in the local area in the future, after having been a corporate team owned by Shin-nittetsu. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Sakai Blazers' undertakings focusing on how they raised funds and how they have been acknowledged. The present annual operating expenses of the Blazers are 270 million yen, and almost two-thirds of it is given by Shin-nittetu as advertising expenses, though it has been decided that the funds from Shin-nittetu will be reduced to one-half in 2005. So they have embarked on various new businesses to establish a self-supporting system. For example, they have made a request to the Japan Volleyball Association that V League Organization should adopt a home & away system and admit multiple uniform sponsors. These requests were put into practice in 2003. The Sakai Blazers built up connections with the Sakai City government. They dispatch players to junior high school clubs in Sakai City to teach volleyball, conduct volleyball classes for citizens and hold a sport event called the "Blazers Cup" with funds from the Sakai school board. They put an emblem on the uniforms proclaiming that Sakai would be a city designated by an ordinance, with funds from the city. When the Blazers was established, they had no connections based in the local area, other than that with Shin-nittetu. In three years they set up these financial networks, since positive acknowledgement is indispensable.

It has been said that sponsoring in-house sports teams can help to increase teamwork and loyalty within a firm, though sufficient evidence-based studies have not been done to substantiate this claim. This research aimed to examine the positive impact of a corporate sponsored sports team on its employees, primarily by measuring the following three factors ; 1) corporate shared-value, 2) both internal and external communications, and 3) employees’ attachment to and pride for the company. A questionnaire was sent to all 28,000 employees of Seino Holdings Co., Ltd., which sponsors a corporate baseball team for its employees, and 6,440 valid responses were received. 36.1% of the respondents said they had interest in the team, while 35.7% answered they were neutral toward it, and 28.8% answered that they were not interested in it. Furthermore, 12.3% of the respondents answered that they had participated in the baseball team activities. Both of the groups that showed interest or participated in the team scored higher in all three factors, compared to non-interest / non-participants (p<0.01). The results suggest that engagement of employees in corporate sponsored sports teams contributes to a deepening of inter-organizational relationships, helps to cultivate a collaborative corporate culture, and increases team spirit.

The spectators attending sports in a stadium, who are the object of this study, are indispensable for professional sports. The purpose of this paper was to clarify the factors related to the frequency of stadium attendance. The factors clarified will be important materials to marketing managers regarding customer retention. The data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 362 people(men=180, women=182) who had been to the stadiums once or more in 1993 to watch the franchise games of Sanfrecce Hiroshima, which is one of the teams in the Japan Professional Soccer League. The procedure of this study was, first, to examine which items are related to the frequency of stadium attendance by applying X<SUP>2</SUP> test and hypothesis testing of Kendall's rank correlation to the data, and second, to identify which factors affected the frequency by using multiple regression analysis . As the result, there were three factors affecting the frequency of stadium attendance : the number of the players the spectators knew by name, the time required to get to the stadiums, and the degree to which the spectators regarded themselves as supporters.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This paper proposes a measurement system and computation method for 3D motion analysis in sports. The measurement system that consists of inertial and magnetic field sensors is able to measure 3-axis angular velocity, 3-axis acceleration and 3-axis magnetic field. We can easily perform the experiment in sports because this system is directly attached to the body. Introducing the sensor fusion algorithm using Kalman filter, we can avoid storage error by the drift of the gyro sensor. The computation method provides the angles by compensation of centrifugal and tangential acceleration and sensor fusion. <BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In order to confirm the accuracy of this proposed system and computation method, we compared the value obtained by this system with the value obtained by a rotary encoder. It was found that the measurement system and computation method provided the accurate value. It is shown that the proposed method can be used for motion analysis in sports.

Japan's unique corporate sports system has greatly contributed to the development and promotion of sports in Japan. However, due to the worsening economic development, the environment surrounding corporate sports organizations has been changing drastically. Especially, that of ball sports, among corporate sports, is very difficult. Given the change, it is necessary for sports organizations to understand behavioral and psychological characteristics of their spectators in order to set out significant marketing strategies for effective provision of sports products. In terms of understanding the characteristics, many previous researchers discuss the importance of finding and choosing an appropriate target market through segmentation of spectators in sports. Consequently, this study focused on the motivation of sports spectators. The purposes of this study were to understand the behavioral and psychological characteristics, segment by segment, and to compare and contrast the characteristics of spectators among everal sports leagues in Japan top ball sports. Scales based on the Sport Interest Inventory (SII) were used in this study. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted first to detect the motivation factors of sports spectators, and then non hierarchical cluster analysis, using mean scores of each motivation factor, was conducted for classification of the spectators. The findings of this study reveal the existence of 10 factors regarding sports spectators' motivation, and be able to classify sports spectators into 5 clusters; "Fixed Fan" "Social Fan" "Potential Spectator" "Normal Spectator" and "Active Fan" according to the tendency of the mean scores and the demographic characteristics. Some implications were suggested from the study for further development of Japan's top sports.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that the inhabitants who have higher spectating intention or behavior at sporting events in their hometown hold higher place attachment.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Through the comparison of place attachment among the inhabitants, significant differences have been found. The inhabitants who have higher spectating intention hold a higher degree of place attachment. Moreover, the inhabitants who have experience of spectating behavior hold a higher degree of place attachment than those who do not have it.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The results of this study indicate some existence of the relationship between spectating intentions or behaviors at sporting events, and place attachment. However, the cause and effect relationship between them has not been established clearly. It is necessary to make continuous research targeted at the inhabitants.

“Jeju Olle” is the name of a series of walking trails (26 courses, totaling approximately 410km) located in Jeju Island, South Korea. "Olle" means “an alley to a village” in the dialect of the island. Ms. Myung-sook Suh has played a central role in the construction of Jeju Olle and serves as the president of the Jeju Olle Foundation, a non-profit organization. The first course of Jeju Olle was constructed in September 2007, and volunteers helped to extend and complete all the courses in November 2012. Olle is maintained by revenue from membership fees, company sponsorships, and sales of original brand products. In 2007, 3000 people came to walk on Olle, and since then the annual number of Olle walkers has increased significantly; every year since 2011 there have been over one million visitors, and this has brought about a new trend in tourism business. One of the main reasons for the increase in popularity in South Korea of the walking tours to Jeju Olle is the reduction in cost and improved access associated with an increase in the number of LCC flights from 2008. Jeju Olle has won praise both at home and abroad, and is a successful new business model of sports tourism, combining factors such as business management by non-profit organizations and activation of the regional economy.

In June 2014 an agreement of cooperation was signed among the Paralympic Organizing Committee and 552 universities in regard to the promotion and planning of the Olympics movement for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The object of this study was to clarify the challenges for the organizing committee and university cooperation projects in preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics tournament, based on business examples from the Nagano Olympics. As a result of this study, it has been possible to create an environment for sharing information and planning the development of the tournaments of the Paralympics Games based on cooperation and sharing of information from the Nagano Olympics, the Games Organizing Committee, and local universities at the time of the Paralympic Games. Furthermore, to enable information exchange with the organizing committee, training and participation of tournament volunteers has been carried out. In light of this it is considered that, for the 2020 tournaments, it is important to carry out information exchange in cooperation with the business plan of the organization and the Games Organizing Committee and with the cooperation of each university.

PURPOSE : The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the stages of exercise behavior change in middle age, focusing on previous, social and psychological factors using qualitative methods.METHODS : Data were collected from a sample of forty people (18 men and 22 women) from 40 to 59 years old who live in Osaka and Hyogo. We conducted semi-structured interviews and fieldwork from November 2010 to September 2011. The hypothesis model, which consisted of previous, social and psychological factors influencing the stages of exercise behavior change, was verified.RESULTS : Stages of exercise behavior change in middle age were strongly influenced by human support, mainly in informal relationships such as exercise companions and family. The effect of the home was found in both the male and female samples. Work had a stronger influence on the male sample than the female sample. Some participants who practiced programs such as strength training or walking were resocialized to exercise and sports. These participants had not been satisfied with exercise and sports when they were in school, but they found satisfaction with new exercise and sports in adulthood.CONCLUSION : The socio-psychological factors in the middle age stage of life have an important meaning in resocialization to exercise and sports. Opportunities to get close to new exercise and sports are thought to be necessary for the adulthood life stage. This study suggests that a support system to continue exercise and sports based on continuous life stage connections is quite important.

This study examined the means to encourage collaboration strategy with various local community actors through public sports facility management organizations. Such a collaboration strategy is aimed at activities which consist of local contribution activities provided by public sports facility management organizations and activities that stimulate the local community support for the local contribution activities. This strategy should make it possible to improve the operation of public sports facilities.    The study focused on two baseball fields of comparable scale, located in neighboring cities and managed by a local company that specializes in farm equipment sales. We conducted semi-structured interviews with the following informants: (1) the president and staff of the managing company, (2) administrative officers of the cities, (3) staff members at the two baseball fields, and (4) various local community actors who collaborate with the company.    The major findings were as follows: First, it is important for local governments to adopt appropriate policies, such as granting partial management responsibility for public sports facilities to organizations experienced in facilities management to ensure flexible, competent management based on a collaboration strategy with the various local community actors. Second, collaboration strategy with the local community various actors is important for producing two desirable outcomes: (1) it can reduce costs by building relationships of trust with local community various actors, and (2) it can also thereby build trust with the local government and can have a positive effect on public sports facility management organizations.

The present case study evaluated an environment-focused project for promoting walking, which included the development of walking courses (using public spaces, parks, roads) with stations for smart cards in the community and an interfaced internet-based self-monitoring system. The project was started in 2008 in Misato City of Saitama Prefecture. In this project, individuals can participate by paying a registration fee (500 yen) and obtaining their own cards. If registrants walk the course, holding their cards over a scanner at 3-4 stations, the smart card records their data (e.g. distance and time spent in walking) from one to the other station and transfers these to a self-monitoring system. As a result, registrants could check their data online. From June 2008 to November 2009, a total of 631 individuals (62% female) who obtained the information from newspaper, magazines, website, or some local events, registered for this project. From walking data collected automatically in the database through the self-monitoring system, it was found that 445 registrants (63% female) used this system at least once, and most of the registrants were 40 years old or more. This suggests that the project in this study might have been effective in promoting walking only among older people. Also, most of the registrants lived around the courses. In particular, the courses in the area surrounded by beautiful nature and residential areas were often used. To expand this idea to other age groups, new attempts, including a point supplying system based on the distance of walking are under development.

Over 1.1 million injuries and accidents happen in schools every year in Japan. Most of them happen during sports activities such as physical education or sports club activities. In order to prevent accidents it is important to elucidate the contributing factors by focusing on the occurrence. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the characteristics and factors contributing to sudden death during sports activities in schools, by using text-mining analysis. Data was collected from the database of death and disability cases publicized by the Japan Sports Council. There were 127 cases of sudden death during sports activities from 2005 to 2012. The results by morphological analysis and co-occurrence network analysis revealed two characteristics. The first point was that the ′act of running′ had a close relationship with the occurrence of sudden death in schools. The second was that not a few cases of sudden death happened even though the children had done warm-up exercises before the accident. Our results suggest that the relationship with the act of running, warm-up exercise and the occurrence of sudden death should be kept in mind when sports activities in schools are held. In addition, our study shows that data-mining analysis has a potential to objectively analyze more than one million injuries and accidents in schools.

Elite sports investment is usually justified on the basis that elite sports success has a wide range of social-psychological benefits among the general population. However, insufficient evidence about these positive effects has made it difficult to show the validity to ‘alternative voices’ opposed to the elite sports funding. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the monetary value of elite sports success in Japan by using the contingent valuation method (CVM) addressing the problems in sports management literatures. Data was collected from n=850 stratified randomly selected Japanese by means of an Internet survey. Respondents were asked to state their willingness-to-pay for elite sports policy, which aims Japan being ranked in the top-five in total number of gold medals in the summer Olympics and the top-ten in winter, which is the official target of ‘The Sports Basic Plan’ , using a double-bounded dichotomous choice. The results revealed that median WTP was 405 JPY with a certain amount of validity, which was calculated from the whole population as 42.2 billion JPY. Our results suggest that Japanese believed that social-psychological benefits generated by the elite sports policy exceeded the government elite sports budget (about 16 billion) .
