This paper reports recent research activities and developments of odor sensor and taste sensor. The application fields and market places of these sensors are expanding by the remarkable progress both in sensing devices and signal processing engines. These sensor developments are first reviewed by comparing the differences between odor and taste detection technologies. Then, the quantitative analysis method of taste sensor is discussed and finally mentioned about a flavor sensor consisting of taste sensor and odor sensor.

In general, beer degradation is evaluated by sensory test, however it depends on the subjectivity of an inspector. Therefore, it is highly required that an objective evaluation method is developed. It has been clarified that the degradation degree of beer proceeds mainly by oxidation of components derived from malt and formation of non-electrolyte trans-2-nonenal. In this study, we developed LB film taste sensor using metal complex for evaluating the degradation degree of beer with trans-2-nonenal concentrations. In addition, the physical properties of three metal electrodes and sensing film surface were evaluated with AFM and FT-IR, and these results and the sensor response characteristics were compared and discussed for improving the sensitivity as a sensor for beer degradation evaluation.

The detection of accidents on elderly person living alone and the communication between the elderly person and his/her family are very important. This paper describes a new method for tracking and fall detection of elderly person using omni-directional image sensor, and the Itawari-kan communication system that supports their communications and gives alarms for detected accidents on the elderly person. This system tracks the person's head position in real-time by image processing on images captured by some omni-directional image sensor. Then, the system transmits the information of the detected head position to another site. The computer of recipient site generates the computer graphics animation of the tracked person and displays the animation on a monitor. When the system detects an accident from the head position, the system gives an alarm. This method reduces traffic on network and keeps the privacy for the tracked person. We made a prototype system of the Itawari-kan communication system. Experiments on the system showed good feasibility of the proposed system.

前報告に記載した三角型反射器を基本とし、一層電波の指向性を顯著にするため反射器を種々に排列し、實驗的に比較研究したのである。かくして遂に到達した角型反射器の測定結果を擧げ、其開きを適當にすれば、普通行はれてゐる比較的構造面倒なるパラボラ型の反射器と何等の遜色がない事、從つて實用には簡單な此の方が却つてよい事が述べてある。これを受信所に使用する時は、聚波器として効果のある事もまた實驗の結果を以て示してある。<br>次に反射器として棒の適當な長さに就て一言し、且つ角型反射器を使用した發信器より發射する指向性特別短電波を可聽周波數で變調し、携帶した受信器の音の強さに依つて周圍の電界の強さや指向性を調べた事に就て記載してある。<br>最後に特殊の形の空中線を使用して、短波長ビームを得た多くの實驗的結果を擧げてある。例へば空中線をL型、逆L型、或はそれから變形したものを用ひた時の測定結果や、又はU字形、距形等の空中線の場合の實驗的研究を記してある。

To design DC electromagnets in an optimal manner, it is necessary to obtain the dynamic behavior accurately. A new method to calculate the dynamic behavior using the finite element method with edge elements has been developed. In order to verify its accuracy, the static and the dynamic behaviors of a clapper type electromagnet are calculated. The 3-D electromagnetic field analysis is carried out using the vector finite element with tetrahedral edge variables. The force is obtained by using the Maxwell stress tensor. The displacement of the armature of the electromagnet is obtained by solving the motion equation of the moving parts. The calculated results of the edge elements and that of the nodal elements are compared with the measurements. Moreover, it is clarified that the forces and the dynamic behavior can be accurately calculated using the edge elements.

<p>Surge voltages often have much higher value and changing rate than those of power frequency voltages, and might cause damages to apparatuses or equipment not only on near a surge source, for example lightning struck point, but also on far points from it due to propagating. In addition, surge phenomena often become complex due to the reflections and the superpositions on a point where surge impedances having different value are connected. The surge phenomenon occurring on a power cables connected with a transmission tower is one of these cases. This research's goal is to propose the EMTP model for surge phenomenon occurring on cables arranged through a transmission tower. The proposed model simulates such cable by using a cable model through a pipe conductor. The results calculated by the proposed model ware compared with the results by VSTLrev (Virtual Surge Test Lab. Restructured and Extended Version) which is a surge analysis program based on FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. As a result, the proposed model is reasonable for analysis of a surge phenomenon occurring on a cable through a transmission tower.</p>

The calibration procedures of charge amplifier (CA) on vibration acceleration standard are described. The calibration principle and fundamental calibration procedures are explained in detail. Typical commercial CAs (3 types, 4 CAs) are evaluated in terms of the frequency sensitivity gain, the long-term stability, the linearity for input charge, the linearity for gain setting and the effects of environmental conditions (temperature and humidity). The maximum discrepancy in the sensitivity gain is approximately 4 % among the tested CAs. A relative sensitivity gain difference of 1.5 % still remains when CAs of the same type are compared. It should be mentioned that a difference of 1.5 % is not negligible. Such a large difference has not been commonly observed up to the present time. Based on these experimental results, the technical guides for charge amplifier calibration are summarized.

This paper presents a novel QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) sensor for detecting interactions between membrane proteins and their ligands using liposomes derived from human cells. First, liposomes having BCR (B-cell receptor) were derived directly from cell membranes by stimulating human lymphocyte cells, Ramos, with NaB (sodium butyrate). Next, the liposomes were separated from the cells by filtration and micronized by sonication. Then, the liposomes were immobilized on the surface of a QCM sensor chip using cell-anchoring molecules. Several experiments demonstrated that ligand detection is achieved by frequency reduction with application of the antibody against BCR.

In this study, we propose a simple observation method of the shape and molecular orientation of the chromosomes extracted from cells for a sample-to-analysis system in clinical diagnosis. The proposed technique is composed of total preparation technique such as cell immobilization, chromosomes extraction, stretching, suspension and analysis using a disposable microchip controlled by centrifugal force only. It is experimentally confirmed that the chip having two kinds of microstructures arranged concentrically on a chip immobilizes cells and stretches chromosomes extracted from the immobilized cells.

This paper presents a cell compression stimulus microdevice intended to evaluate the real-time response of cells to compression stimuli. The presented device consists of cell inlet ports, a pressure inlet port, a gasket, microchannels, culture chambers, and a diaphragm on the culture chamber for applying compressive pressure to cells. Compression stimuli applied to the cells can be controlled by regulating the expansion of the diaphragm via a pressure control. The device permits the observation of cellular responses to compressive pressure in real time because it is made of transparent materials and stimulates the cells without deforming the cell culture surface, when observed by optical microscope. We observed the cellular deformation and response behavior using a fabricated microdevice in real time. The changes of intracellular calcium concentration before and after compressive stimuli were observed by the fabricated device. Also, the intracellular maximum strain part and strain distribution of a cell that received compression stimulus were clarified by FEM analysis. These results indicate the device is expected to clarify the cellular mechanoreceptor mechanisms and signal transduction pathways and facilitate the control of stem cell differentiation by a combination of the experimental results and FEM analysis results.

This paper reports part of a novel packaging method for a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) based ultrasonic endoscope using low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) side via architecture. An annular ring array CMUT device is designed and fabricated for packaging. LTCC is used as a prime wafer for CMUT fabrication and LTCC side via structure is achieved by hexagonal shape dicing of the fabricated CMUT device. A hexagonal shaped polyimide substrate mounted at the backside of the CMUT is used as a base layer for IC integration (flip-chip bonding) and also provides mechanical support to the CMUT. Cr/Au electrodes were patterned on the LTCC side via and polyimide substrate to achieve electrical connection between CMUT arrays and IC circuits. Au bonding pads were successfully completed on the polyimide substrate by electroplating for flip-chip bonding. Flip-chip mounting on the polyimide substrate is described and the electrical resistance of bumps is measured using the 4-probe method. The difference between the measured and calculated resistance is discussed. This method with the indirect connection of CMUT arrays and IC circuits has flexibility for high performance tube-shaped CMUT packaging with small diameters for intravascular imaging.

PZT (Pb(Zrx,Ti1-x)O3) thin film capacitors using Nano-transfer method has been developed for the fabrication technology of smaller capacitors. The adhesion strength of Pt to SiO2 was shown to be important among process factors. The adhesion force was shown to be originated from the material diffusion in the crystallization process mainly by the observation of TEM and XPS analysis. In this paper, diffusion of ingredients of PZT which is supposed to be one of the factors of the variation was investigated. It was confirmed that diffusion of Pb certainly occurs and this diffusion reinforces the adhesion strength in accordance with the Pt thickness. It is concluded that the diffusion is surely one of the factors of the variation of the adhesion strength.

We have developed a new method for cleaning flow-through cells by using microbubbles and ultrasonic (US) standing waves. A standing wave generated by US transducers at 1 MHz was used to trap microbubbles at node positions of the sound pressure. We were also able to control the microbubbles' positions spatially through frequency modulation. We found that these microbubbles were very effective for washing microbeads out of flow-through cells, particularly when frequency-modulated US irradiation was used. The proposed method promises to be very useful for cleaning the flow-through cells in small analytical instruments.

In this paper, the waveform of an ultrasonic wave with frequency of approximately 5 MHz propagating through various taste solutions was measured. Furthermore, these solutions were investigated by using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). As a result, differences among solutions were clearly observed. Therefore it was found that the possibility of taste sensing using ultrasonic wave and SPR was obtained from taste solutions.

A piezoelelctric quartz-crystal plate can be used as a microbalance (a quartz-crystal microbalance, QCM). When substances adsorbed on a gold electrode, a fundamental frequency of a QCM is decreased linearly with increasing mass on the electrode. The host molecule-immobilized QCM is used as a biosensor responding to the addition of guest molecules in aqueous solution in nanogram level.

Since odor sensing system is required in many fields, we have developed the system using QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance) array and neural-network pattern recognition. Moreover, the system for measuring many samples by an automatic sampling stage has been developed. In the present study, the characterization of the sensing films deposited on QCMs was performed. Responses of 37 kinds of films exposed to 14 sorts of organic vapors were studied to classify sensing films and investigate sensor response models. As a result of the research, it was found that the similarities among films were obtained using principal component analysis, and the frequency shifts could be estimated using multiple regression analysis.

A new method for localizing an odor source by mimicking the behavior of silkworm moths is proposed. A male silkworm moth is able to track airborne sexual pheromone to its female counterpart. During the search, a moth draws air from its front to its two antennae by wing vibrations, and turns toward the antenna more strongly stimulated by the pheromone. An artificial system with this mechanism has been realized using a small fan and plural gas sensors instead of the moth's wings and antennae, respectively. The system is called an 'odor compass' since it continuously points to an odor source by rotating the probe to the sensor with the largest response. The capability of its directional probing is successfully demonstrated by the results of estimation of the odor-source direction in a clean room. Furthermore, the improvement of the system to realize the three-dimensional localization, which is often required in a practical environment, is reported, and its feasibility is demonstrated.

In this paper, we fabricated periodic micro-bump array structure on Si substrate to evaluate their tactile sensations. Fine-edged Si micro-bump array structures can be easily fabricated by photolithography and dry etching processes. Sensory evaluation of tactile feeling of roughness and frictional resistance with human finger was conducted with paired comparison method. In addition, friction coefficient between the micro-bump array and an artificial finger model that mimics our fingertip was evaluated. The result of sensory evaluation showed that rough feeling was affected by edges of the micro-bump structures even though the grooves between the micro-bumps were narrow as 20 µm. In contrast, frictional resistance feeling did not depend on the effect of the edges. It was strongly affected by a contact area between the micro-bump structure and finger skin. When the width of the grooves between the bump were 100 µm, finger skin entered and touch the bottom of the grooves, and then, the rough feeling and frictional resistance feeling were increased due to the contact area increment. The rough feeling and frictional resistance feeling have little correlation with the frictional coefficient measured with artificial finger model. It was more easy for human skin to enter the narrow grooves, in particular when the groove width was 100 µm.
