Understanding travel behavior is essential for urban transportation planning. This paper presents the development of a GIS-based system for understanding individual travel behavior under space-time constraints and its application to the graduate class of environmental information system in spatial planning and policy. Required input data consist of activity schedules, transportation networks and activity opportunities. Potential Path Area (PPA) and the feasibility of participating in activities in space-time prisms can be simulated and represented on GIS, before and after changing constraints. The system is very useful for students to understand activity-travel behavior in urban space.

This paper estimates the benefit of a plan for information providing system on road administration by WebGIS. The system will reduce travel costs of visitors from their business establishments to a road administration section of a city office. The authors had individual interviews with the visitors at the section of the Ichikawa City Office. Annual total sum of travel costs was estimated at 37 million yen at most. This paper also proposes formulas which expect the frequency of visits or the total sum of travel costs from the spatial distribution of the business establishments without questionnaires.

In this paper, walking distance and diverting ratio from Shibuya station, Tokyo, where redevelopment around the station is planned, to all surrounding facilities are calculated using pedestrian path network in the neighbor of the station. We observe that walking distance is shorter in northern and western parts, whereas it is longer in southern and eastern parts, and that diverting ratio is high in circumference and southern part of the station where the influence of a pedestrian overpass to stride over Route 246. We also estimate that average walking distance decreases by 139 meters by the installation of the high-level pedestrian decks around the station, which is planned in a redevelopment plan in the neighbor of Shibuya station.

This study aims to evaluate the accessibility to the natural environments of residential environment evaluation in Utsunomiya City. For the purpose, the evaluation functions which use multiple regression analy-sis with residents'evacuation of accessibility as the criterion variable and the traveling time to the destinations as explanatory variables were developed using GIS.As the result, compared with the case which the air distance was used as explanatory variables, the coefficient of determination becomes more than two times. And this result shows that traveling time is an effective factor and GIS is useful tool for this kinds of study.

Sun glare may be a major hazard for car drivers in the winter. This is because the sun is low in the sky during the morning and evening where the roads are at their busiest with people driving to work and to home. The purpose of this article is to analyze what to extend the sun glare disability arises in rectangular area. We derive the probability of sun glare by use of computing the number of trips driving toward the sun. In addition, we examine how the shape, the direction, the latitude of the rectangular study area affect such probability.

To improve the hazard map of the inland water in the urban area, a few flooding images were given based on simulation data by NILIM2.0. Four conditions of the torrential rain had been simulated to Jakuzure district in Setagaya ward. For reliability improvement of inland water hazard map, the state of drainage function at the time of a flood has to be visualized, to offer a flood dynamic image. And administrative agency has to keep renewing the data base according to the progress on urban development. For the education of disaster prevention, the electronic media such as 3D images of flood simulations should be introduced.

In this study, a new automated construction method of minute road segments is developed. Numerical simulation models for rainfall-runoff and flood inundation model considering process on roads were based on so-called “Minute road segments” that are formed as simple shape polygons to calculate the flow on roads. In the developed method, firstly crossroads are demarcated from road sections of uninterrupted flow in order to simplify a polygon of road. Secondly road sections and crossroads are divided into minute road segments. The developed method was applied for Kanda catchment and the shapes of minute road segments were validated.It was demonstrated that minute road segments can be created by using the method of this study.

In this study, the analysis system of evacuation action at the time of flood was developed using GIS. The system applied the network analysis which considers multiple refugees and shelters simultaneously and searches the shortest paths through the network links from halfway of the links. Moreover, the evacuation action was simulated in detail by linking network analysis and flood analysis. As a result, it was shown that the analysis system is applicable to plan suitable evacuation routes and shelters, and enlighten the residents on the importance of early evacuation.

Natural disaster might cause traffic congestion, changing traffic network. In this paper, we propose the way of developing the road condition analysis, animated traffic simulations of GIS and apply to the traffic situation under the Tokai downpour by using travel survey and tachometer of the drivers who had been driving under the disaster, from 9.11 to 9.12, 2000. As a result, it was revealed that many drivers who had driven at that time had involved chronic traffic jam and it took many hours to reach to destination.

Two methods and a system for the measure against slope failure disaster using GIS are proposed in this paper. 1) Method of extracting cliff and potential area, suffered from slope failure, by DEM and Landuse data. 2) Method of extracting potential slope failure area by rainfall data, and a system of conveying this information to local residents. These methods can be applied to many places where these data are available. Moreover, dangerous cliffs and the areas are extracted at the same time even in wide city area. These methods will allow us to extract dangerous cliff and area without fieldwork, and this information will help local residents with proper actions. Minami ward, Yokohama city, was selected as a study area.

In recent years, Japan has developed long-distance cycle routes as part of tourism promotion policy. Cycling tourists often take these routes for inter-destination movement. However, it is difficult to gather data concerning such types of movement with existing investigation methods such as questionnaires. This study examines the effectiveness of volunteered geographic information (VGI) for analyzing inter-destination movement of cycle tourists and regional factors affecting the movement. Hokkaido was selected as a suitable targeted area. As the result, comparing the behavioral indicators derived from VGI and existing questionnaire survey, we could show that VGI were effective in capturing the actual condition of cycle tourist movement. In addition, analyzing the regional factors affecting cycle tourist movement based on Spatial Autoregression Model allowed us to detect important regional factors, including coastline, trail station and accommodation.

The number of climbers in Japanese mountains have increased for recent years, and climbing and hiking have been getting constructive fields in tourism. However, some climbing beginners, especially middle aged and older people, who are overconfident on own physical strength sometimes encounter serious accidents and distresses. Actually, an accident and a distress in a mountain have also increased in these years. In order to achieve safer mountain climbing, it would be effective to aggregate and analyze individual climbing experiences in accordance with not only individual conditions but also mountain environments even if there is poor network connection and power supply. Therefore, this paper aims to organize available datasets for analysis of practical behavior of mountain climbers, and describes methods to obtain climbing behavior data even for middle and older people under poor network and power environment. In particular, we implemented a cloud system to aggregate online-submitted climbing plans, and a check-in app using individual owned IC-cards. Finally, this paper describes some findings and discussions through our field experiments.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in field museums, which has led to local communities rediscovering their cultural identity, history, and ecology. However, a field museum guide system has not been researched extensively. The purpose of this study is to develop a field museum guide system by smartphone using digitalized old maps and old photographs. An evaluation of the prototype by users yielded roughly satisfactory results. As a result, we clarified the following design features of the guide system. Based on the following designs, we have developed a guide system in Field Museum of Morioka. The guide system has four functions: push-type information providing using GPS, use of old map/photograph, story-based navigation and cooperation among on-site mobile applications and Websites to visitors before/after the visit. And, the system was evaluated by viewpoint of the visitor and operator groups of the field museum. As a result, it was evaluated that the system is useful for town walking.

Most of previous surveys of tourist activities using GPS devices have focused on where tourists visit and how long they stay, but not on what they actually do at each location. Thus, we have attempted to investigate the relations between the tourists' actual activities and their spatio-temporal data. In this paper, we conducted some experiments at a zoological park to build statistical methods for estimating whether a tourist is viewing an exhibition or not from his/her GPS logs. The result shows that their walking speed seems critical for the estimation, and, by considering additional parameters, we can estimate precisely whether 20s tourist is viewing or not.

This paper evaluates park trails by analyzing the spatial patterns of visitors' visual experiences, using digital cameras, GPS loggers, and GIS. We use a technique called “visitor-employed photography” to identify sceneries that visitors evaluated positively. We then add geo-tags to the digital-photo data. Thereafter, the spatial patterns of locations where the visitors took photos are analyzed on a GIS. The spaces and sceneries favored by many visitors are extracted by the kernel density estimation of locations where photos were taken. We find that the distribution patterns are influenced by the characteristics of walking-designed courses. Moreover, we classify the photographs into nine categories and, thereby, reveal, in detail, the spatial patterns of locations where photos were taken in each category.

It is a fundamental process of urban planning to determine the planning area or to divide the area into the zones in which the tendency on urban activities at each place is similar to others. The area dividing process can be formulated as a minimization problem of the sum of the generalized distance. This problem can be numerically solved by using Hopfiled Network which is a basic model of neural network theory.Applying the proposed method to the actual urban lattice data, we can obtain divided zones.

Recent years, for development of computer hardware and software, information processing is about to accoplish remarkable progress. While, today, space use on each floor of buildings is more various, and has become difficult to be grasped by methods of numerical or two-dimensional.As a method of research, analysis and valuation on various space use on esch floor of buildings, we propose "three-dimensional mesh map" which is made of a cubic lattice with one unit-3.5m×3.5m ×3.5m, which is made out by three-dimensional computer graphics.

This paper aims to measure the positional accuracy of digitized point data by mouse operation. Fifteen operators digitized 225 representative points of buildings in the experiment designed with Latin square. The frequency distributions of X and Y deviations between digitized point locations and the centers of gravity of buildings on the original drawing are more peaked relative to the normal distribution. An analysis of variance and multiple comparison show that the differences among building coverage and among operators are significant. Substituting estimated deviations into a formula made by Teraki(1999), this paper estimates the probability of identifying buildings by the point-in-polygon interpolation.

The purpose of this study is to improve methods estimating for the distribution of population along urban roadways with heavy traffic in order to account the population exposed to serious noise or air pollutant. Recently, a census covering the whole country provides the population data with the Basic Unit Blocks and the locations data of its center point. Population density in the range of every 10 meters from the roadway is estimated by allocating the population data into the polygon data of blocks on the market. For more detail, the number of population could be allocated into polygon of buildings according to floor space and floor uses. The linear approximation of census population data could be applied for estimating the spatial distribution of people, if the polygon data are not available for the targeting area.

There are two important problems in clustering of small area statistics: handling of outliers in small area statistics and complexity of spatial distribution of typologies created by classifying small areas. The purpose of this paper is to show a procedure of geographical clustering using small area statistics in order to solve these problems. According to the results of two examinations, Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) constraining the range of updating weights is better classifier than K-means. As to the issue of simplifying spatial distribution of typologies, we showed that there are relations between the level of the spatial smoothing and the spatial extent of the study area.
