In many ball games, research on the sound quality of the sound generated when hitting a ball is underway. This is because the comfort of the impact sound exists as an important factor for athletes. In this study, we investigated the elements necessary for the comfortable impact sound, targeting the impact sound of badminton. In the experiment, the impression of the impact sound reproduced from the headphones was evaluated by the SD method. As a result, it was found that the impression of impact sound can be expressed by Beautiful & Metallic, Powerful and Spatial Factor. In addition, it was suggested that the Beautiful & Metallic Factor might be associated with the elastic performance in badminton competition, and the Powerful Factor might be associated with the flying performance. Furthermore, we examined acoustical characteristics that correlate well with each factor, and constructed the sound quality estimating model for the impact sounds.

Kansei is greatly affected by culture, customs, life-style and the other social factors. Therefore sociological studies are indispensable in order to explain functions of Kansei. In this paper we clarify four meanings of Kansei by analyzing the perceptive process of human beings and define Kansei which sociology deals with as the psychological ability to judge or evaluate intuitively sensory information or representation. And based on this, we clarify how the sociological approach to Kansei is possible by showing several methods for it (“sociology of sense”by Goerg Simmel, approach from artifacts, social studies of science and technology and studies of social meanings of concepts).

A market where the cooking is enjoyed as experiential consumption is being roared. Enjoyment eventually improves quality of life (QOL) via elevated positive feeling. Analogously, it is meaningful to elucidate the cooking-related factors that uplift feeling to enrich the eating habits. In this research, we tried to establish a questionnaire that measures the factors to represent uplifted feelings associated with cooking. First, a qualitative pilot survey was conducted. 104 items related to the uplifted feeling by cooking were collected. Then, 600 participants answered online-questionnaire to quantitatively evaluate the degree of uplifted feelings for each item. Exploratory factor analyses revealed that the items were classified into seven factors: special feeling, cooking characteristics, physical wellness, crowding, amount and stability, rationality, and appearance. Internal consistency for each factor was satisfactory. High convergent validity was indicated based on correlational analyses. These together indicated the factors are adequate to measure uplifted feeling regrading cooking.

Serious problems have been occurred by the trading of the data leaked from computers and the one uploaded to Homepages illegally by the file-sharing software program for example Winny recently. Winny was developed by Isamu Kaneko and opened on his homepage, May 6, 2002. Winny has a characteristic to maintain anonymity. Two users of Winny were arrested on the charge of the copyright infringement by Kyoto Police, November 27, 2003. And Isamu Kaneko was also arrested on the charge of their aid, May 10, 2004. And Kaneko was sentenced to fine 1,500,000 yen by Kyoto District Court ,that is “Judgment 2006.12.13”. He is appealing to Osaka High Court now. I would consider the technology of Winny, think the judgment of the Kyoto District Court and talk about the best legal and technical way in the future.

<I>Oshibori</I> is a small wet towel to wipe hands before meal in Japan. Most of researches on <I>oshibori</I> have investigated the towels from the perspective of cleaning and sanitation. Few studies have assessed the qualitative and sensory characteristics associated with <I>oshibori</I>. In this paper, subjective evaluation experiments were carried out using cotton <I>oshibori</I> of different temperatures such as 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 &deg;C in the laboratory temperature at 20, 25 and 30 &deg;C over four seasons. 29 males and 33 females evaluated <I>oshibori</I> on following properties such as &ldquo;favorite,&rdquo; &ldquo;rare,&rdquo; &ldquo;hot,&rdquo; &ldquo;feel-smooth,&rdquo; &ldquo;high-grade,&rdquo; &ldquo;comfortable,&rdquo; &ldquo;soft,&rdquo; and &ldquo;moist,&rdquo; according to five point grading. As results, the <I>oshibori</I> at the temperature of 5, 15, 45 and 60 &deg;C were evaluated to be comfortable. Contrary, those of 30 and 75 &deg;C were evaluated uncomfortable. Moreover, sexual specificity of the evaluation was observed.

Recently, value-sharing consumption and participation behaviors triggered by words and images transmitted by celebrities, bloggers, and friends are attracting attention. The focus of this research is to clarify the various processes involved in sharing these values, and to contribute to the business management of an industry that relies heavily on sense and emotion. First, I define the idea of value-sharing, then I outline three hypotheses of the processes involved in sharing these values, followed by establishing my hypothesis model. In order to test these hypotheses, I conducted a survey targeted to influencers and event attendees, and conducted a psychological experiment about memory infiltration. The hypotheses were partially supported, however the hypothesis model leaves room for further verification. This research revealed images shared on social media were associated with memories of previously encountered images and real-life memories, and participants showed a unification of a positive state of emotions with others.

<p>In this study, we investigated the relation between autism spectrum tendencies of normal observers and evaluation of facial emotional expressions, used for "Ban Dainagon Emaki". Recognition of facial expressions was verified by Scheffé's (Nakaya) paired comparison method using the evaluation attributes of the four emotions (fear, anger, sadness, and happiness) in conjunction with investigation of the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). Different cognitive patterns especially extracted from communication ability, were confirmed, comparing facial expression recognition tendencies for the two groups, higher levels of autistic - like traits and lower levels of autistic - like traits. Between the two groups, the high levels on the AQ were difficult to recognize the fear of negative emotions, but regarding the happiness of positive emotion, similar tendency was demonstrated. These results are consistent with the findings obtained from previous studies on the tendency of facial expression recognition between healthy individuals and those with traits of ASD.</p>

The purpose of this study is that systems, which offer the music suitable for feelings of the user who is not only a room but also acting outdoors, are constructed. In this paper, it is tried that user's situations and activities, user's feelings and musical genres are related. Genres of music were chosen six genres of the pop music generally listened to well. And, rhythms with the feature of each genre were extracted, and 11 sample music only of the rhythm were made. Next, Kansei evaluation experiments were done to activity in seven situations including outdoor and indoor environments, and acquired data was analyzed by the correspondence analysis. The relation between the “place and action - feeling” and “musical genres” was shown as a result of obtaining. Also, we tried to construct a simple evaluation system using obtained result, and effectiveness was confirmed.

This paper describes a composition technique based on two methods, the information theory and the genetic algorithm. Recently, we have needed a new development of the composition technique from variety of our life style on the music, so that it is useful to obtain fundamental rules for the composition by using intelligent informatics technologies. The main idea of our technique consists of the following two parts. The entropy obtained from scores contributes the determination of melody, and the genetic algorithm so as to fit the melody performs the code progression.Two examples of composition results have been given to demonstrate the usefulness of our method.

<p>We have been developing an EEG-based cognitive brain-machine interface (BMI) system, Neurocommunicator® to support patients with severe motor deficits in communication. This system uses an event-related potential (ERP) to decode the message (pictogram) that users want to convey. In addition to the communication aid, it would be expected for the Neurocommunicator to improve the QOL of the users in a variety of daily-life situations. In this study, we focused on the brain activity that reflected the decision-making process of customers. We used the virtual shopping task as a model of daily shopping, in which a variety of product images were used as visual stimuli for the sequential delayed matching-to-sample paradigm. We recorded EEG data from 12 normal subjects and examined the ERPs in two conditions; the subject selected one (target) out of 8 products (nontargets) either "to BUY" (positive condition) or "NOT to BUY" (negative condition). We observed the strong ERPs not only to the target "to BUY" but also to the target "NOT to BUY" compared to the nontarget. The magnitude of the response and the decoding accuracy of the former were, however, greater than the latter. These results suggest that the ERP to a product is enhanced by the intention to buy it, and that the ERP- based Neurocommunicator has potential to become a "body-free" shopping tool for patients with severe motor deficits as well as a real-time neuromarketing/neuroconsulting tool for any person.</p>

Rapid urbanization and information technology has reduced human connection and a sense of regional community among local populations around the world. This may have led to a decrease in people's sense of belonging and feelings of fellowship toward their neighbors and towns. We hypothesized that one's sense of belonging and feelings of fellowship toward their town will increase after hearing the sounds of bells. Participants were asked to observe virtual scenes in which they heard the bell signaling every hour. We assessed how listening to the bell influenced participants' feelings of community membership and whether viewing particular scenes and the sound increased these feelings and participants' sense of belonging. Results showed that for scenes involving an overhead view of the bell, e.g., scenes that included facilities such as temples or churches, participants reported an increased immersive experience. as a result of the shared sense of time with their neighbors.

Quantitative analytical framework for investigating the relationship between the design of 3D products and subjective impressions regarding shapes was developed by using a combination of spherical harmonics (SPHARM) and multivariate analysis. SPHARM is a parametric surface description that uses spherical harmonics as its basic function. The shape of liquid soap bottles was focused as a typical example of 3D product design. We converted 3D surface data on shape of 22 liquid soap bottles into multivariate coefficients using SPHARM, in order to extract their major morphological features. Then, we performed a principal component analysis of these coefficients. The extracted morphological features were related to the aspect ratio in the frontal plane, thickness and roundness. Subsequently, participants rated their subjective impressions of bottle shapes on a semantic differential scale. We examined relationships between major morphological features of bottles and their subjective impressions. Results indicated that this methodology is effective for appreciating the positioning of a product's shape design, as well as for systematically understanding the correspondence between shapes and subjective impressions of products.

Today, the opportunity to appreciate visual contents on the device of various sizes, such as a large theater, a cellular phone, etc. has increased, and techniques in consideration of environment and KANSEI are required. In order to perform KANSEI evaluation of visual contents, one of typical methods is Semantic Differential Method. However, KANSEI evaluations between bipolar and unipolar method may differ. In this paper, we investigate KANSEI evaluation of 5 types visual contents by changing the reproduction color, camera work and display size. In addition, we investigate bipolarities of stimulus words and effectiveness of unipolar method.

In this paper, a method to generate gradation of typical coloring techniques in order to promote a content production environment in consideration of KANSEI (sensitivity) engineering is discussed. We considered a color cube with coordinates in three axes, representing RGB 3-dimensional space. There are various gradations in a color cube. We have developed an interactive tool to generate a gradation by displaying the inner area of the color cube. We then proposed a new method to generate gradation using this tool. Regarding parameters of display area, we considered inputting pattern data from color scatter charts obtained from paintings or photos. The possibility of a tool which can generate gradation from images corresponding to the KANSEI words is discussed.

The Specific Health Checkup aimed at preventing metabolic syndrome was initiated in 2008 in Japan. Through this guidance, people considered at high risk of metabolic syndrome's progressing are expected to be made aware of their own problems in their daily lifestyle choices and to improve their daily life behaviors by themselves. To support this national endeavor, we have introduced the idea of data mining techniques by building a Bayesian network (BN) corresponding to the framework and the data configuration of the Specific Health Checkup. In this paper, we analyze data on 11,947 anonymized individuals, extracting major factors from questionnaire data related to lifestyle and consider the possibility of generalizing our BN by introducing these lifestyle questionnaire factors as nodes of the BN. This proposed method is found to provide good performance, and its usefulness is revealed by evaluating the level of change of the responses to the questionnaire. Introducing the lifestyle questionnaire factors nodes into the BN would be expected to make it a more useful risk assessment tool.

Recently biometric authentication systems have become open and large scale thus leading to its widespread use. However, no systematic study has been done with regards to the safety of such systems. On the other hand, cancelable biometrics, the intentional distortion of biometric characteristics to protect sensitive data in biometric authentication systems, has been widely studied. Many methods have been proposed for cancelable biometrics technology, but the security criterion in such is indefinite. In this paper, we consider cancelable biometric techniques from the perspective of the safety of the system. We also verify the effect of the security precaution of the liveness detection techniques using Fault Tree Analysis, a risk evaluation method about data protection and spoofing prevention techniques.

Current map systems fail to provide the information that a walker really needs. Because the information that the walker wants is always changing. Current map systems are inadequate because of giving only one index in indication of a map. The conventional map expression technique have used only one kind of indexes such as a sight substance, a hearing substance, or a sensitivity substance. In contrast, an aim of our study is map expression of the forms that system compound, and each layer supplements them each other. Our map is made by investigating at first which kind of map should be used for the promotion of the human geographical recognition. Therefore this paper investigated the number of the landmark in their recognition and the difference between persons who could read a map well and who could not. We carried out three experiments. The first experiment is designed to find out the differences in the concrete landmark between persons who understood a map and who cannot read a map. The second experiment was based on the result of the first experiment and clarified of the important element except the visual object in the human cognitive map. The third additional experiment was performed with the result of the second experiment to examine how map system show multimedia elements. The technique of four kinds of map expression designs was implied from the result of three experiments. And the Layerd-map model is proposed as a presentation method to display them adequately.

In this paper, we propose a support system to convert users' manuals to comics. In the proposed system, comics are generated using the texts and images taken from a manual in advance. The user selects sentences and images used to generate comics, from candidate sentences and candidate images. Furthermore, the user can select the favorite font size and style, and generate comics that matches the preference of each user. We carried out two kinds of evaluation experiments: the first one is the comparison between the generated comics and the original PDF file, the second one is the evaluation of the user-friendliness of the proposed system. As the results, it is confirmed that the proposed system can generate manuals which are easy to read and attract interest by usage of comic representation. In addition, it is also confirmed that users can generate favorable comics as expected by simple operations.

Impression made by the color of cellular phones was investigated. We presented pictures of an identical cellular phone with 16 different body colors to 194 observers and asked them to evaluate the appearance of the pictures by using the Semantic Differential (SD) method. The results of factor analysis indicated that there were three factors of impressions: masculine-feminine, gorgeous-staid, and evaluation. A subsequent confirmatory factor analysis supported the factorial validity of the proposed three-factor model. It also revealed that there were significant gender differences in certain factor scores and intrafactor correlations. We applied the “positioning analysis” method (Toyoda, 2001) for the SD data, and mapped the loading values for SD scales and colors on a 2 dimensional plane. Implications regarding the underlying structure of impression and its relationship with the body color of cellular phone are discussed.

Comic has, recently, been known as one of the most beloved entertainment and affective medium in the world. This paper describes about extraction of Kansei highlight from comic using social data. There seems to be Kansei highlight that most people approve in comic, because several related books where impressive scenes and captions for a comic are gathered are published. Through the experiments on impressions, we obtained social data for comics. We used the social data to extract Kansei highlight from comic. Through the three types of experiments, we confirmed that social data was available for extracting Kansei highlight from comic. Moreover, we designed the interface of social reading system for comic considering interaction on existing social service. We believe that the extraction of Kansei highlight from comic using social data increases attraction of digital comic.
