In this study, we conducted an experiment that compared 27 schizophrenia patients and 29 healthy subjects in perception of emotions expressed by an NAO humanoid robot. We programmed the robot to express the eight basic emotions proposed by Plutchik (1984) which were anger, anticipation, expectation, joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, and disgust using Teshi et al. (2015)’s method of dynamically changing the robot’s eye color. We found a significant difference between the two groups of subjects in their judgements of the robot’s emotions. The results showed that the schizophrenic patients had difficulty in recognizing the robot’s emotions. In addition, the two groups showed different patterns of emotion misperceptions. The schizophrenic group’s misperceptions mistook positive and negative emotions. The misperception of schizophrenic patients may be caused by the similarity of colors and fast blinking cycles. We consider it resulting from the decline in information processing abilities of the schizophrenic patients.

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether art students would evaluate paintings based on the economic dimension of value (EDV). Art students (N = 193) were asked to rate 14 paintings (including seven good arts and seven bad arts selected from the Museum of Bad Art) on four scales of aesthetic evaluation. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their degree of the EDV. The results demonstrated that the EDV was related to aesthetic evaluations for both good and bad arts. These results suggest that art students with the high EDV appreciate paintings based on the EDV and focus on whether paintings would be sold.

To apply onomatopoeia to product design, we investigated the relationship between the sound symbolism of onomatopoeia and physical quantities. The target of evaluation was the operating tactile sensation of rotary switches. First, a subjective evaluation experiment was conducted in which participants were asked to provide free answers using onomatopoeic expressions related to their impressions of the operating tactile sensation. The obtained onomatopoeia was analyzed by quantitative text analysis using mora as the unit of analysis, and it was found that the phonemes of onomatopoeia used by the participants differed depending on the magnitude of the click torque of switches. Next, we examined the impressions of the onomatopoeia when the click torque of the rotary switch was sequentially changed via 7-point scale evaluation experiments. As a result, the correspondence between tactile sensation and onomatopoeia was grasped quantitatively. This paper shows that onomatopoeia can be used for quantitative product design.

Choreography is one of the important parameters in dance performance. To make dance cool, it is necessary to design the cool choreography. However, beginners can hardly design choreography because they do not know how to judge the choreography good or bad. In this paper, we propose a system which automatically estimates the coolness of choreography for Lock dance and supports for the beginners to design choreography more sophisticated. To realize the proposed system, we focus on the suitability between the dynamics of dance move and music as a parameter of the coolness. We propose the estimation formula of the coolness based on the suitability, and evaluate it experimentally. As the result, it is revealed that the higher the suitability becomes, the higher the coolness becomes especially for the experienced participants feel on the experimented environment. Consequently, it is expected that the proposed system enables beginners to design cool choreography.

Facial expression is one of the most important social skills for smooth communication. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty with facial expression communication and need support to acquire social skills. Therefore, we developed a training system for facial expression and a support system for recognition of facial expressions. In the training system for facial expression, we devised a user interface so that users can enjoy training by themselves. The user can make facial expressions according to the teacher’s image on the PC screen, and check his or her own facial expression and score with the PC camera. In the facial expression recognition support system, the user’s facial expression recognition is supported by displaying the expression of the person in front of the user in words on the smart glasses. These developed systems were evaluated based on usability, and improvements were discussed based on these evaluations.

<p>Currently, robots that are designed to communicate with people, such as service robots, are becoming popular. It is known that expressing emotions can make communication smoothly. Therefore, humanoid robots must have the means to express their emotions. In this study, we focus on the body movements of humanoids and aim to add emotions to them. In this paper, we propose RNNPB-Trans. We conducted experiments to generate movement of the wave and bow with emotion using RNNPB-Trans. The results showed that RNNPB-Trans could generate for waves that express emotion used for training, but could not for bows which is an unknown movement. It seems to be better to extract the features from the movement and then transform the movement features by RNNPB-Trans.</p>

Though a lot of glasses design for women are proposed and displayed in a shop recently, it is difficult for a customer to select them. For the purpose, the fundamental research on what kind of glasses design is liked from a viewpoint of a customer is thought to be required. Then, the purpose of this research would analyze about the glasses design liked by women.As the method of research, image words contributed to the attitude of liking the glasses design were calculated by multiply regression analysis, and cognitive parts (form elements) affected to each image word of the glasses design were extracted by rough sets. Before the calculation, these image words and cognitive parts were extracted by the evaluation grid method. Samples of seventy-one kinds of glasses were evaluated into five steps about each image word on the subject of twenty women. Four image words “foppish (fashionable), pretty, decent, intellectual”in twelve contributed to liking were calculated using the data mentioned above. Next, the relationship between four images and cognitive parts was extracted based on the decision class of Rough sets (the non-linear technique of the ability to avoid of Multicollinearity) using the data of each image word. From the result, the hierarchical relation from the attitude to cognitive parts about the preference has been clarified.Furthermore, the verification experiment of the result of the hierarchical relation was conducted on the subject of a designer working a design office, who proposed three design sketches reflecting the whole result of the attitude and emphasized pretty and intellectual in it with some useful comments to improve the method.

While there are reports on the reliability of the universal goniometer (UG) and smartphone application goniometer (SG), there have been no reports on user impressions when using these devices. In this study, impressions of users of UG and SG that are used in clinical practice were clarified and reliability was compared. Questionnaires on user impressions were administered to 13 staff members who work in the clinical field. Measurements in the hip and knee joints of seven participants were taken by three testers, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were obtained to assess reliability. Results showed that SG was superior in terms of appearance, weight, texture, portability, usability, versatility and readout. SG was inferior in terms of setting up measurement axes. However, SG demonstrated high reliability even when compared to UG. The intra-and inter-rater ICC were 0.51 to 0.89 and 0.65 to 0.75, respectively.

This research attempts to construct the automated system of clothes pattern design directly from the three-dimensional data of the body to indicate the trend of creating clothes pattern design in future. In this report, firstly I attempt to obtain unfolded plans to fit the body directly from cross sectional figures using the three-dimensional data. Secondly, the study examines the methods of obtaining the width of each pieces necessary for making pattern on unfolded plan by changing some focuses along the division lines. This experiment and research show the following results. Firstly, the width of fit type torso prototype is based on the length of the outside envelopment, picking up the utmost projection points from the upper to the lower half of the body. Secondly, at least four division lines are needed in order to make the torso prototype. Thirdly, amount of darts appear mostly at axillaries posterior for the torso prototype regardless of focus and formed area. Amount of darts on the division lines, changes to a large extent, depending on the place of focuses rather than the way texture runs. But amount of darts by human sense and that of using temporal focal point correspond largely to others. In this way, the temporal focal point is likely to be effective.

“Resolution” in music theory means the chord progression by the transition from dissonance to consonance for providing more profound satisfaction to listeners than consonant chord only. The authors have investigated similar effects in temporal color transitions as an analogy of musical perception’s effect. In Part (1), the authors used various display patterns of three-colors combinations, measured the score of the color consonance with a sensory test, and revealed conditions where the “resolution” effect is enhanced. In Part (2), the authors focus on the conditions of gaze control. The fixation point appears as a small white dot on the black screen, and the observers are advised to fix their gaze onto the point. The white dot continues to appear while the observers watch the color arrangements and the transition. The experimental results suggest that the “resolution” effect appears more clearly when the color arrangements are captured in peripheral visual fields.

Our goal is to promote brain health through “bSports” (brain-Sports), a form of social sport competition using brain-machine interfaces. As the core technology, we have been developing an electroencephalography-based cognitive training system, “Neurotrainer,” using event-related potential as a virtual “mind switch” to control games. Here, we aimed to assess the performance of the Neurotrainer under competitive conditions between players. Fifteen pairs of healthy adults, including older people with tendency of degrading motor functions, were involved in a one-hour session of 4 games. Each player activated the mind switch to select one of eight pictograms to control his/her robot avatar for its desired action. All players regardless of age performed well at the level of about 85% success rate and reported that they had fun with our body-free technologies. These results suggest that bSports is an effective cognitive training and social activity that can be appreciated by people across all generations.

Nagoya Cochin is one of Japan’s famous chicken breeds and was also the first domestic commercial chicken. The eggshell is a pink cherry-blossom color, with white speckles on its surface. The purpose of this study is to develop an eggshell color index for quality control to improve the commercial value. This study consists of two experiments. In the first experiment, the eggshell color of sixty eggs was measured by a colorimeter TC-8600A, and a visual evaluation using photo images of each egg was conducted by fourteen visual inspection experts. They scored on a Likert scale of five steps on four criteria: attractiveness of color, attractiveness of white speckles distribution, overall attractiveness, and preference. The relationship between the eggshell color and the visual impression was analyzed on a Hunter Lab color space. In the second experiment, a range of color variations of eggshells were generated on a screen using Adobe Photoshop, and a visual evaluation of three hundred and fifteen egg images was conducted by seven experts. It is hoped the results from both experiments will be useful for agricultural producers to develop more attractive products and increase the commercial value of Nagoya Cochin chickens.

Kawaii is one of the representative concepts of Japan-original Kansei. In this paper, we categorized Kawaii motion of Roomba and investigated the correlation between physical properties of motions and Kawaii-ness. First, we classified motions of Roomba into 10 types. Impressions of those motions were investigated and three of them were found to be Kawaii by subjects. Based on the findings, we formed a hypothesis that variations in acceleration, namely the jerk, affect Kawaii-ness. Second, we evaluated parameters of seven physical properties (position, velocity, acceleration, angle, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and time) of three Kawaii motions of Roomba. Then, we created 24 types of robot motions and evaluated impressions of them. The physical features of created motions were correlated with the Kawaii-ness of them. The result indicated that the jerk certainly affects the Kawaii-ness of motion but not always. It clearly indicated that the Kawaii-ness of motion is multifaceted.

By the development of the information-oriented society, it became very easy even for beginners to make collages out of photographs by means of computer software. In old days, those photograph collages could be simply distinguished from true photographs because the photograph collages was made by hand. However, it became very difficult to differentiate the true photograph from the photograph collage by digital Image processing. And then, that kind of collage has many problems concerning copyrights or social ethics etc. On the other hand, the photograph collages seem to be accepted as one of the art technique in the recent photograph world. We show three solutions. First, limit of the copyright use by having All rights reserved or not. Second, the detective technique of an unjust reproduction and modification develops. Third, media literacy education is strengthened.

We examined impressions and attentional attractiveness of visual cues on an information display. In the first experiment, we found three factors (‘evaluation’, ‘potency & activity’, and ‘novelty’) about impressions on visual cues and three type of cues without negative impressions could be selected based on ‘evaluation’ factor. We suggested that flashing cue and zooming cue do not give negative impressions and were effective for attracting people's attention in the cued area (Masakura, et al., 2005). ‘Evaluation’ and ‘potency & activity’ factor scores of these two cues were positive and we pointed out a relationship between attentional attractiveness of cues and impression on them. In the second experiment, we found that the ‘evaluation’ and ‘novelty’ factors were related to the latency of eye movements to the cued area and the ‘novelty’ factor was related to the duration of fixation in that area. It was revealed that the latency of eye movement was short when ‘evaluation’ and ‘novelty’ factor scores for a cue were low, and the duration of fixation was long when ‘novelty’ factor score for a cue was low. The cue which attracts fixation early could give negative impressions.

This study verified how timing of sound effects affects the user's operation performance with interactive content, such as computer games. We conducted an experiment to test the hypotheses that (1) operation performance is slightly degraded if the sound effects lag behind the visual beat with “good” timing and (2) operation performance is substantially degraded if the sound effects lag behind the visual beat with “bad” timing, where the “visual beat” in interactive content is the repetition of periodic visual accents in visual images. Our findings indicate that a delayed timing of sound effects degrades the operation performance, but the degradation depends not only on the degree of delay of the sound effects, but also on how in tune the sound effects are with the visual beat.

Healing music and Musicotherapy attract attentions recently. They are beginning to be used in the medical treatment. On the other hand there are little practical utilization to relax with video images compared with music. Visual information is said to occupy about the whole of 80% humans receive from five senses. Therefore it has some potential that visual information affects human's mental and physical state as well as aural information does. This paper attempts to investigate the relation between characteristics of video images and mental relaxation. The one of characteristics we focus is motion speed of video images. It is considered that it might correspond to tempo of music. This paper investigates the relaxation effect by using the index calculated by heart rate variability analysis. The experimental results and analysis confirmed that viewing video images might have higher effect of reducing stress than eyes closed state and the relaxation effect might depend on motion speed.
