This paper aims to consider the Kansei of the fourth graders of the elementary school to the public space through the analysis of the environmental estimation and the proposal by means of the use of Five Senses' icons and Thanks icons. The method can be categorized into three stages, the first being the conduction of the fieldwork and workshop about security in their school route and around school. In the workshop, students make suggestions about the security of a well-known city. The second being the collection of the result data discriminated in quantitative terms in order to understand their tendency and the third stage being the qualitative consideration of the proposed typical.According to the analysis during the estimation phase by the fourth graders of the elementary school, it is revealed that Thanks icons bring about the positiveness of the children.

Waiting is an inevitable part of life and the spaces in which we wait can contribute to either improve or worsen the experience. This paper covers the process and results of “The waiting room”, analyzing if the presence of specific smells has a significant impact in how the room and the waiting experience are perceived. Two different odorants were selected, lavender (relaxing) and orange (stimulating); 63 participants from 32 different countries were assigned into three groups (between-groups approach): Control (unscented), Orange and Lavender. Results show that both scents affected the room and waiting experience evaluation in different ways and overall increased the surrounding space perception compared to the unscented condition. Participants exposed to lavender scent were inclined to rate higher the ‘psychological’ properties of the room such as pleasantness and warmth; in addition the lavender-evoked memories were emotion based. Participants exposed to orange scent tended to rate higher the ‘physical’ properties of the room such as brightness and height; orange-evoked memories were object based. Lavender scent had a stronger influence in space perception than orange, suggesting the relevance of congruence and coherence between scent and physical environment when incorporating it as a tangible design tool in architecture.

Tactile stimulation is an important factor in mother-infant interactions. Many studies on both human and animals have shown that tactile stimulation during the neonatal period has various beneficial effects in the subsequent growth of the body and brain. In particular, massage is often applied to preterm human babies as “touch care”, because tactile stimulation together with kinesthetic stimulation increases body weight, which is accompanied by behavioral development and the changes of endocrine and neural conditions. Among them, the elevation of insulin-like growth factor-1, catecholamine, and vagus nerve activity may underlie the body weight gain. Apart from the body weight gain, tactile stimulation has various effects on the nervous system and endocrine system. For example, it has been reported that tactile stimulation on human and animal babies activates parasympathetic nervous systems, while suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenalcortical (HPA) axis, which may be related to the reduction of emotionality, anxiety-like behavior, and pain sensitivity. In addition, animal experiments have shown that tactile stimulation improves learning and memory. Facilitation of the neuronal activity and the morphological changes including the hippocampal synapse may underlie the improvement of the learning and memory. In conclusion, it has been strongly suggested that tactile stimulation in early life has beneficial effects on body, brain structure and function, which are maintained throughout life.

The impression of sharpness of body movements (Kire in Japanese) is critical for aesthetical evaluation of body movements in dance, gymnastics, and martial arts’ Kata. However, the basis of impression formation of sharpness has not been empirically investigated to date. This study was designed to clarify how body movements’ speed affected impression formation regarding body movements’ sharpness. We also examined the effects of unexpectedly fast body movements on impressions of sharpness. Participants rated the impressions of sharpness, subjective speed, and unexpectedness of body movements when viewing movies of Karate Kata performance. Multiple regression analysis and path analysis revealed that subjective speed and unexpectedness affected impressions of sharpness of body movements and that subjective speed also affected them through unexpectedness. These results suggest that manipulating the speed and unexpectedness of movements effectively enhances impressions regarding the sharpness of body movements.

Through this research, I intend to show how improving the fit of a mask can benefit sufferers of hay fever. Currently available masks absorbed a large amount of pollen during experiments. However, the effects of wearing these masks are unclear. Therefore, I am interested in the fit of masks on faces. For quantitatively evaluating the fit ability of a mask on a face, I developed a device that measures the strain behavior of sheets and faces at the time of wearing a mask. To investigate the fit ability, angle change and position change at the time of vowel pronunciation were measured using the developed device comprising two shape sensors and a digital video camera. There were five measurement points on both the mask and face: two points ‘nc’ and ‘ns’ on the nose, one point ‘cc’ on the cheek and two points ‘jc’ and ‘js’ on the jaw. The first letters ‘n’, ‘c’ and ‘j’ denote the nose, cheek and jaw, respectively. The second letters ‘c’ and ‘s’ denote the centre and side, respectively. Four types of masks made of different materials and of different shapes were adopted as experiment samples: a 2D gauze mask, 3D gauze mask, pleated non-woven mask and molded non-woven mask. The subjects were seven young women. The fit ability of a mask was studied from the viewpoints of angular differences and correlation coefficients between a mask and a face, and the distance between the mask and face was measured. Analysis of angle changes showed that at point ns, the gauze masks assumed a convex shape against the face. The correspondence between results obtained for the gauze masks was lower at points ns, jc and js, whereas that for the non-woven masks was higher at points nc and cc. Moreover, analysis of the position changes revealed that the maximum vertical distances of the gauze masks were larger at points jc and js. These results proved that different materials and shapes of a mask yield different fit abilities.

In this study, we conducted interview surveys and observational surveys for understanding the characteristics of counseling skills possessed by expert hairdresser, and developed an integrated model of activities and thought processes in counseling. As a result, the following three characteristics were suggested: (1) The counseling process is proposal-based rather than listening-based, (2) The thoughts in the observation phase are based on abstract cognitions about clothing, and (3) The decision-making in the observation phase are more frequently in line with the customer’s wishes. These are expected not only to explain the skills possessed by expert hairdressers but also to provide clues for discussing counseling by novice. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to the expertise of hairdresser. In constructing the model, we developed a method for integrated visualization of activities and thought processes. This method is considered to be novel and useful in skill analysis.

In this study, we compared and evaluated whether different facial expressions on the package resulted in different evaluations of the confectionery by presenting participants in the experiment with different facial expressions on a fictitious package and conducting a pairwise evaluation. In the result, it revealed differences in the evaluation of “visual taste” and “familiarity” depending on differences in facial expression, although the effects of the combination and individual differences in preference were also observed. As for the influence of each part of the face, it was found that the mouth part influenced “familiarity,” while the eye part had a significant influence on the “visual taste” evaluation. This suggests that having a face on the confectionery package with an appropriate facial expression for the product itself will help people feel more comfortable with the product and understand information such as the type and strength of the product’s flavor.

In this paper, we propose an emotion estimation method for words and its application to construct a word-emotion dictionary. Since the estimation of more delicate emotions in various natural language processing tasks is a crucial issue, we aim to estimate various emotions to a word. In order to realize it, we employ the distributional hypothesis and assume that an emotional word in a sentence influences the surrounding words. First, we collect more than 2,000 words expressing emotions from an emotion expression dictionary. By using these emotional words and a neural model based on Continuous Bag-of- Words (CBOW), we propose an automatic system to estimate the emotions of many ordinary words. As a result, emotion vectors for 20,000 words could be obtained. We carried out experiments to examine the accuracy of the vectors. It is confirmed that the generated emotion vectors reflect the emotion image for words that humans have.

We examined the effects of foot massage on healthy adult females’ mental and physical functions by electroencephalography as an emotional assessment method. We randomized 20 healthy adult females into 2 groups receiving a massage by a therapist (Group A) and mechanical massage using a commercially available massager (Group B), each of which consisted of 10 subjects. After massage, the lower limb volume significantly decreased in both groups, but Group A showed more favorable results related to comfort, pain, and feeling refreshed. Electroencephalography confirmed increased beta waves, indicating enhanced neuronal activity, in the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus of Group A after massage. The results suggest that foot massage by a therapist positively influences not only physical functions, but also mental conditions.

Emojis are extensively used to convey emotional nuances non-verbally in computer-mediated communication. Previous studies have examined how emojis are used and how they change the expression of a sentence, as well as the subsequent impression of the reader. Regarding whether the writer’s emotion is understood correctly by readers, evidence shows that emojis can enhance specific emotions. However, the effects of variation in the kinds of sentence, emotion, and emoji on the shifting emotion conveyed have not been studied. In this study, we examined the various factors that affect the shift in emotions being communicated. Our results demonstrated that positive emotions can be communicated more correctly compared with negative emotions and that smiley emojis (a.k.a. emoticons) can communicate emotions more clearly compared with other kinds of emoji.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the work posture due to palm rejection on the mental workload caused by handwriting using a stylus. We conducted an experiment, in which the work posture due to palm rejection and the screen tilt angle were evaluated using the input time and the NASA task load index. The results indicated that when the screen tilt angle was 0-30°, the mental workload could be reduced by enabling palm rejection; however, the input time was not affected. Moreover, after examining the influence of the screen tilt angle, we concluded that tilting the screen by 20-30° would be most preferable, regardless of whether palm rejection occurred or not.

Colic crying, which is a baby's abnormal crying induced by unknown causes, is a typical example of sounds giving unpleasant impressions to listeners. Recently, Mukai et al. suggested that the colic crying would cause the child abuse because of its unpleasantness. In this paper, we propose the extended pitch perturbation quotient (ePPQ) for the evaluation of unpleasantness of crying. It is shown that the ePPQ is an index to quantify instability of fundamental periods, which seems to be cause of unpleasantness of colic crying. The ePPQ for colic crying is significantly higher than that for crying cured by operation. Furthermore, as a result of subjective evaluations, it seems that there is a tendency for the scale of unpleasantness to be high when the ePPQ is high. Therefore, it is considered that the ePPQ is a useful index for evaluating unpleasantness for crying.

With the promotion of the maintenance and utilization of domestic forest resources, a variety of educational activities, called “mokuiku,” which aims to raise awareness of forestation through hands-on experience with wood from early childhood, have been developed with a focus on “mokuiku” toys. In a preliminary study, through a survey and analysis of wooden toys, the author created an index that clearly indicated their educational characteristics and the relationship between children’s developmental stages and design. In this study, we created five prototype designs based on this index, and examined how they would affect children’s growth. The evaluation results of the experiments at the nursery school confirmed the educational effects of each of the prototypes on the nursery school children, including the development of fingertips, concentration, imagination, and coordination, suggesting that the toy designs created based on the indexes may promote children’s growth and development.

Under difficult COVID-19 situations, restricted movements and increasing stress demand casual counseling. Counseling in a virtual space would lower the psychological barrier to consultation by concealing the client and the counselor’s figure. This study examines whether the willingness to consult would change by the seriousness of consultation and the different appearances of the counselor’s avatar. As a result, in the serious consultation situation, the willingness to consult with the avatar in a white coat was high. In the informal consultation situation, the willingness to consult with the avatar wearing a hood was high. Furthermore, with eye-tracking, we found that people’s attentive areas were different by the situation and by the appearance of the avatar. These results suggest the potential for the avatar counseling system in the Metaverse and remote virtual reality (VR) counseling.

The major purpose of this research is to compare the focus points on “kawaii character” between manga creators and readers. In order to find that what does manga creators focus on when they create “kawaii characters”, we interviewed 6 manga creators who are excel at “kawaii characters”. And for the readers, we conducted a survey using the Chi-squared test to find out which part of the characters is the readers most focus on when they judge a character as “kawaii character”. Through the research, we found that when manga creators create “kawaii characters”, they often pay more attention to the characteristic of the characters as the readers often focus on the characters’ faces when they judge a character as “kawaii character”.

Faces with larger eyes and double eyelids are perceived as more attractive than those devoid of these features. Moreover, eye bag makeup has become fashionable among nonprofessional lay young females to enhance the perceived size of their eyes. The majority of research on the influence of the upper eyelids on facial attractiveness has been conducted using artificially generated faces; however, research on facial attractiveness forming eye bag makeup remains unexplored. This study investigated the physical and mental attractiveness of real female faces with single/double eyelids and with/without eye bag makeup. The results indicated that faces with double eyelids were rated as more attractive than those with single eyelids. Faces with eye bag makeup were generally perceived as less attractive than those without them. While this was the case regardless of the type of eyelids for mental attractiveness, eye bag makeup only impacted the faces with double eyelids for physical attractiveness.
