〔目的〕本研究は,女子学生における非特異的慢性腰痛の有無による呼吸機能の違いを検証することを目的とした.〔対象と方法〕非特異的慢性腰痛のある女子学生17名(腰痛群)と健常な女子学生17名(健常群)を対象とした.呼吸機能として努力性肺活量(対標準努力性肺活量),呼吸筋力(最大吸気圧,最大呼気圧),胸腹部可動性(呼吸運動評価スケール)を測定した.〔結果〕腰痛群の努力性肺活量(対標準努力性肺活量),上部および下部胸郭スケールと下肢挙上位での腹部スケールは,健常群より有意に低値であった.〔結語〕女子学生における非特異的慢性腰痛は,胸腹部可動性に関連した努力性肺活量低下を招く可能性が示された.

[Purpose] The mechanical strength of wheelchair and seating products is specified by standards to ensure user safety. However, some individual users are affected by severe spasticity resulting from cerebral palsy that occasionally breaks such devices. Until recently, reports of quantitative measurement of these mechanical overloads have been scarce, and the exact loads applied have been unknown. This study aimed to conduct a sampling survey prior to conducting a future full-scale study. [Subjects and Methods] Using two force plates, we measured the load on the foot support applied by three participants with cerebral palsy. The applied load was measured at a 100 Hz sampling rate, and maximum load and vertical/horizontal component forces were analyzed. [Results] The maximum load applied by participants was approximately 1.34 times their body weight. The vertical force applied on the foot support accounted for 70–80% of the total load. The horizontal force also reached about 35% at its maximum. [Conclusion] Because the horizontal load also reached 1/3 of the total load, it will be advantageous to use a three-axis force plate to measure forces in a future study with more participants.

〔目的〕コンプレッションウェアの着用が酸素摂取量および心拍数に及ぼす影響を明らかにする.〔対象と方法〕対象は健常男性26名とした.対象者に対しトレッドミルでの心肺運動負荷試験を行い,裸とコンプレッションウェア着用の2つの着衣条件で酸素摂取量,心拍数,呼吸交換比,呼吸数を測定した.〔結果〕心肺運動負荷試験の運動前,中,後の心拍数(回/分)はそれぞれ,裸で84.4±11.8,156.9±12.3,110.2±22.1,着用時で81.2±11.9,151.7±14.7,102.0±10.4となり,後者の着衣条件で有意に低い値を示した.酸素摂取量,呼吸交換比,呼吸数では着衣条件間の有意な差がみられなかった.〔結語〕コンプレッションウェアの着用は酸素摂取量には影響しないが,運動時の心拍数を低下させる. <br>

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the activation of back and lower limb muscles in subjects who were performing a squat exercise at different angles of trunk flexion. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty healthy subjects (age 21.1± 1.8 years, height 168.7 ± 8.2 cm, weight 66.1 ± 12.3 kg) volunteered. The activation of the erector spinae muscle, rectus femoris muscle, gluteus maximus muscle and biceps femoris muscle was observed while the subjects performed squat exercises with a trunk flexion of 0°, 15°, and 30°. [Results] The erector spinae muscle, gluteus maximus muscle, and biceps femoris muscle were activated more during the squat exercise with the trunk flexion at 30° than the exercise with the trunk flexion at 0°. The rectus femoris muscle showed a tendency to decrease as the truck flexion increased. [Conclusion] Squat exercise be executed while maintaining an erect trunk posture if one wishes to strengthen the quadriceps muscle while reducing the load on the lower back.

[Purpose] This study aims to verify the effects of visual control whole body vibration exercise on balance and gait function of stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 22 stroke patients were randomly assigned to two groups; 11 to the experimental group and 11 to the control group. Both groups received 30 minutes of Neuro-developmental treatment 5 times per week for 4 weeks. The experimental group additionally performed 10 minutes of visual control whole body vibration exercise 5 times per week during the 4 weeks. Balance was measured using the Functional Reach Test. Gait was measured using the Timed Up and Go Test. [Results] An in-group comparison in the experimental group showed significant differences in the Functional Reach Test and Timed Up and Go Test. In comparing the groups, the Functional Reach Test and Timed Up and Go Test of the experimental group were more significantly different compared to the control group. [Conclusion] These results suggest that visual control whole body vibration exercise has a positive effect on the balance and gait function of stroke patients.

〔目的〕高齢者女性の足把持力と胸椎後彎角との関連性を検討した。〔対象〕地域在住の高齢者女性37名(平均74.7±5.9歳)である。〔方法〕足把持力,胸椎後彎角,片足立ち保持時間などを測定し,相関分析や共分散分析を用いて検討した。〔結果〕足把持力と胸椎後彎角ならびに片足立ち保持時間の三者には互いに有意な相関が認められ,胸椎後彎角が大きいほど足把持力が弱く,片足立ち保持時間が短いという関係が認められた。さらに,胸椎後彎角高値群と低値群の2群間の比較から,年齢を調整しても胸椎後彎角と足把持力ならびに片足立ち保持時間との関連が示された。〔結語〕胸椎後彎角が大きい高齢者女性は足把持力が弱く,立位バランスが低下していることが示唆された。<br>

[Purpose] The present study aimed to determine the changes in physical and balance performance following exercise-induced muscle damage using a sport-specific protocol. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen collegiate soccer players were asked to perform a sport-specific sprint protocol to induce muscle damage. The markers of muscle damage (soreness, range of motion, limb girth, muscle strength, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase), physical performance (speed, agility and power) and balance (static and dynamic balance) were assessed at baseline and 24, 48 and 72 hours following the sprint protocol. [Results] All variables, including the markers of muscle damage, physical performance and balance showed a significant difference when assessed at the 4 time points. [Conclusion] The study demonstrated that both the physical and balance performance were affected following repeated sprint protocol in soccer players. It is recommended the balance performance of an athlete be continually assessed following exercise-induced muscle damage so as to determine the appropriate return to sport decision thereby, minimizing the risk of further injury.

[Purpose] This study attempted to examine whether Pilates is an effective exercise for improving the postural alignment and health of middle-aged women. [Subjects and Methods] The participants in this study were 36 middle-aged women (20 in the experimental group, 16 in the control group). The experimental group participated in Pilates exercise sessions three times a week for 12 weeks. Body alignment and composition measurements before and after applying the Pilates exercise program were performed with a body composition analyzer and a three-dimensional scanner. [Results] Postural alignment in the sagittal and horizontal planes was enhanced in the Pilates exercise group. Trunk alignment showed correlations with body fat and muscle mass. [Conclusion] The Pilates exercises are performed symmetrically and strengthen the deep muscles. Moreover, the results showed that muscle mass was correlated with trunk postural alignment and that the proper amount of muscle is critical in maintaining trunk postural alignment.

[Purpose] Evaluating the effect of brain-computer interface (BCI)-based functional electrical stimulation (FES) training on brain activity in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) was the aim of this study. [Subjects and Methods] Subjects were randomized into a BCI-FES group (n=9) and a functional electrical stimulation (FES) control group (n=9). Subjects in the BCI-FES group received wrist and hand extension training with FES for 30 minutes per day, 5 times per week for 6 weeks under the BCI-based program. The FES group received wrist and hand extension training with FES for the same amount of time. Sensorimotor rhythms (SMR) and middle beta waves (M-beta) were measured in frontopolar regions 1 and 2 (Fp1, Fp2) to determine the effects of BCI-FES training. [Results] Significant improvements in the SMR and M-beta of Fp1 and Fp2 were seen in the BCI-FES group. In contrast, significant improvement was only seen in the SMR and M-beta of Fp2 in the control group. [Conclusion] The results of the present study suggest that BCI-controlled FES training may be helpful in improving brain activity in patients with cerebral palsy and may be applied as effectively as traditional FES training.

〔目的〕Individual Muscle Stretching(ID)が心身に及ぼす影響を検討した。〔対象〕健常男子学生60名60肢右脚とした。〔方法〕IDを施行する群(ID群),Static Stretchingを施行する群(SS群),ストレッチングを施行しない群(control群)に被験者を分け,群間及び各ストレッチング前後で,ゴニオメーター,サイベックス,アンケートを用いて比較検討した。〔結果〕柔軟性と筋出力において,ID群は介入後有意に柔軟性の向上と筋出力の低下を認めた。アンケートの結果,ID,SS群ともに,介入後,有意に身体的疲労及び気分の改善を示す結果を得た。〔結語〕IDは柔軟性向上,筋出力低下,精神心理の改善をもたらすことが示唆された。

〔目的〕対麻痺を呈した化学療法中の悪性リンパ腫症例に対して,ベルト電極式骨格筋電気刺激療法(B-SES)の廃用性筋萎縮の予防効果と安全性を検証した.〔対象と方法〕対象は悪性リンパ腫による脊髄損傷を呈した症例とした.B-SESによる廃用性筋萎縮予防の効果判定として初期,中間,最終に超音波診断装置による大腿四頭筋の筋厚測定とAmerican Spinal Injury Association運動機能評価(ASIA)を実施した.有害事象は有害事象共通用語基準を用いて評価した.〔結果〕骨格筋萎縮の予防は可能であったが,ASIAの改善は認められなかった.有害事象は全ての介入期間で認められなかった.〔結語〕B-SESは化学療法実施中の全ての介入期間で有害事象を生じず,廃用性筋萎縮の予防が可能であった.

[Purpose] This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the balance exercises with a Swiss ball on static and dynamic balance abilities in elderly (≥65 years) subjects. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty elderly subjects with no relevant orthopedic history of a back condition were selected for trunk stabilization exercises with a Swiss ball (Thera-Band, USA). The subjects performed these trunk stabilization exercises for 20 minutes, five times per week for 4 weeks. The experimental group (n=10) was blindfolded during these balance exercises, while the control group control group (n=10) was not. [Results] The experimental group showed significant improvements in velocity in the evaluation of static balance and in time, total distance, and left/right movement distance in the evaluation of dynamic balance after the intervention, whereas the control group showed significant improvements in time in the evaluation of dynamic balance. A significant intergroup difference was observed after the intervention for velocity gain. [Conclusion] Exercising with a blindfold stimulates other senses by blocking visual information, and hence it enhances improvements in balance ability.

[Purpose] This study was aimed at investigating the preliminary therapeutic efficacy and usefulness of canoe game-based virtual reality training for stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Ten stroke patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG; n=5) or a control group (CG; n=5). Patients in both groups participated in a conventional rehabilitation program, but those in the EG additionally participated in a 30-min canoe game-based virtual reality training program 3 days a week for 4 weeks. Therapeutic efficacy was assessed based on trunk postural stability, balance, and upper limb motor function. In addition, the usefulness of canoe game-based virtual reality training was assessed in the EG and therapist group (TG; n=20), which consisted of physical and occupational therapists, by using the System Usability Scale (SUS). [Results] Improvements in trunk postural stability, balance, and upper limb motor function were observed in the EG and CG, but were greater in the EG. The mean SUS scores in the EG and TG were 71 ± 5.2 and 74.2 ± 4.8, respectively. [Conclusion] Canoe game-based virtual reality training is an acceptable and effective intervention for improving trunk postural stability, balance, and upper limb motor function in stroke patients.

〔目的〕Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC)導入前後での入院期間,理学療法開始時および終了時のBarthel Index (BI)への効果を分析すること.〔対象〕入院中に理学療法を実施した患者171名とした.〔方法〕DPC導入前後の,理学療法開始までの日数,理学療法実施日数,理学療法開始時および終了時のBIを比較した.さらにDPC導入と理学療法,それぞれの前後におけるBIの変化を,退院先別に分析した.〔結果〕DPC導入により,理学療法開始までの日数と理学療法実施日数の短縮,高いBIでの退院がみられた.また退院先四群間とそれぞれのBIで有意差を認めた.〔結語〕DPCが早期理学療法開始,入院期間短縮,高いBIでの退院につながり,さらに高いBIで理学療法を開始できれば,早い在宅復帰を見込むことができる.

[Purpose] Clinicians have reported the effects of various instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) in patients. The purpose of this study was to investigated the effects of the Graston technique and general exercise on pain and range of motion (ROM) in patients with CLBP. [Subjects and Methods] 30 patients with CLBP participated in the study (Graston technique: 15; Control: 15). Before and after the 4-week intervention program, pain was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Lumbar ROM was measured using a smartphone. The main effects and interaction were analyzed by two-way repeated ANOVA. [Results] A significant time-by-group interaction was observed for the VAS and ROM. A post hoc paired t-test showed that pain decreased significantly post-intervention within the Graston group. The lumbar ROM significantly increased post-intervention in both groups. [Conclusion] The Graston technique and general exercise resulted in pain relief and increased ROM. However, the Graston group showed significantly increased VAS and ROM more than control group. These findings suggest that the Graston technique can be useful as a pain decrease and ROM increase for patients with CLBP.

〔目的〕通所リハにおける在宅脳卒中患者を対象としたCI療法の効果について検討した。〔対象〕当院通所リハを利用の片側上肢機能不全を有する脳卒中患者で適応基準を満たした6名であった。〔方法〕非麻痺側上肢の運動制限を行いながら,麻痺側上肢の集中的な課題遂行型介入を1日5時間,2週連続(平日の10日間)で実施した。評価項目は,Wolf motor function test(WMFT),Motor activity log(MAL),Fugl-Meyer assessment scale(FM)とし,CI療法の実施前後,3ヶ月,6ヶ月後に実施した。〔結果〕WFMTのtimeおよびMALにおいて,介入前後で,有意な改善を認めた。また,評価が可能であったすべての症例で,3ヶ月後,6ヶ月後においても介入効果が持続していた。〔結語〕通所リハにおいて,一般的な手法に従ったCI療法実施は可能であり,上肢の機能改善および実用性が向上することが示唆された。

[Purpose] This study examined the exercise intensity and psychophysiological responses to a self-selected resistance training session in sedentary male subjects. [Subjects and Methods] Twelve sedentary male subjects (35.8 ± 5.8 years; 25.5 ± 2.6 kg·m2) underwent four sessions at 48-h intervals: familiarization; two sessions of one repetition maximum test and a resistance training session in which they were told to self-select a load to complete 3 sets of 10 repetitions of chest press, leg press, seated rows, knee extension, overhead press, biceps curl, and triceps pushdown exercises. During the latter, the percentage of one repetition maximum, affective responses (feeling scale), and rating of perceived exertion (OMNI-RES scale) were measured. [Results] The percentage of one repetition maximum for all exercises was >51% (14–31% variability), the rating of perceived exertion was 5–6 (7–11% variability), and the affective responses was 0–1 point with large variability. [Conclusion] Sedentary male subjects self-selected approximately 55% of one maximum repetition, which was above the intensity suggested to increase strength in sedentary individuals, but below the recommended intensity to improve strength in novice to intermediate exercisers. The rating of perceived exertion was indicative of moderate intensity and slightly positive affective responses.

[Purpose] Many assumptions have been made about taping and several studies have considered tape application methods; however, the true effect of taping on muscle strength remains unclear. Most previous studies compared application techniques using Kinesio tape (KT), but studies that compared muscle strength using non-elastic tape (NT) are limited. Moreover, no studies have applied KT and NT in the same way to assess grip strength in normal subjects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of application of two tapes with different elastic properties on maximal grip strength in healthy adults. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty healthy adults were divided into two groups (KT and NT). Maximal grip strength was measured with a dynamometer. Forearm extensor muscles of the dominant hand were then taped and subjects were immediately asked to perform hand grip movement with maximum strength in the same standardized manner. [Results] In the KT group, maximal grip strength was significantly increased compared to the initial value; however, in the NT group, there was no significant difference in maximal grip strength. [Conclusion] This study suggests that only Kinesio tape can increase maximal grip strength immediately after application on the extensor region of the forearm.

[Purpose] This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hip muscle strengthening on muscle strength and balance in the knee joint after a meniscal injury. [Subjects and Methods] This randomized control study enrolled 24 patients who had undergone arthroscopic treatment after a meniscal injury and began a rehabilitative exercise program 8 weeks after surgery. Subjects were divided into 2 groups of 12 subjects each: gluteus medius resistance exercise group and control group. This study investigated muscle strength and balance in the knee joint flexor, extensor, and abductor during an 8-week period. [Results] Measurements of knee extensor muscle strength revealed no significant difference between the control group and the experimental group. Measurements of abductor muscle strength, however, identified a significant difference between the 2 groups. The groups did not differ significantly with regard to balance measurements. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that this subject should be approached in light of the correlation between the hip abductor and injury to the lower extremities.
