Potential variations around the grain boundaries (GBs) on the surface in undoped n-BaSi2 epitaxial films on Si(111) and Si(001) were analyzed using Kelvin prove force microcopy. The potentials were higher at GBs than those in the BaSi2 grains on Si(111). The average barrier height was approximately 30 meV at the GBs, indicating that the enhanced potentials repulse photogenerated holes so that the charge carrier recombination can be effectively reduced. In contrast, the potentials were smaller at GBs in the BaSi2 on Si(001), and the average barrier heights were approximately 30 and 50 meV along Si[1–10] and [110], respectively.

The Shannon information content is a valuable numerical characteristic of probability distributions. The problem of estimating the information content from an observed dataset is very important in the fields of statistics, information theory, and machine learning. The contribution of the present paper is in proposing information estimators, and showing some of their applications. When the given data are associated with weights, each datum contributes differently to the empirical average of statistics. The proposed estimators can deal with this kind of weighted data. Similar to other conventional methods, the proposed information estimator contains a parameter to be tuned, and is computationally expensive. To overcome these problems, the proposed estimator is further modified so that it is more computationally efficient and has no tuning parameter. The proposed methods are also extended so as to estimate the cross-entropy, entropy, and Kullback–Leibler divergence. Simple numerical experiments show that the information estimators work properly. Then, the estimators are applied to two specific problems, distribution-preserving data compression, and weight optimization for ensemble regression.

Controlled generation of difluorocarbene was effected by an NHC catalyst under mild conditions starting from trimethylsilyl 2,2-difluoro-2-fluorosulfonylacetate (TFDA). Cyclohexenones and tetralones were treated with TFDA in the presence of catalytic amounts of N,N′-dimesitylimidazolium chloride and sodium carbonate. The ketones were difluoromethylated with the generated difluorocarbene to afford enol difluoromethyl ethers without difluorocyclopropanation. The ethers thus obtained were dehydrogenated with DDQ to furnish aryl difluoromethyl ethers in high yield. Under similar conditions, secondary amides underwent difluoromethylation selectively on the oxygen atom to give difluoromethyl imidates, which allows the formation of 2-difluoromethoxypyridines.

黒鉛炉AASによる鉱石中の金, 銀, 白金, パラジウム及びロジウムの分析について検討した.試料をテフロン密閉容器中180℃で5時間加熱して分解した後, テルル共沈法により貴金属を共存元素から分離し, 更に陽イオン交換分離法を用いて完全に分離した.又, 銀についてはテルル共沈法で完全には捕集できないため, 陽イオン交換分離法のみを用いて共存元素から分離した.この分離後の溶液を黒鉛炉原子吸光光度計に導入し, 目的元素を定量したところ, 分析結果は保証値とよく一致し, 分析精度は相対標準偏差で3〜5%であった.
