We have been forced to curtail our social and economic activities for a long time while trying to cope with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, the number of suicides in Japan, which had been declining in recent years, has begun to increase again. The increase has been particularly pronounced among young people and women, and this is deeply related to the gender issues that Japanese society faces. For example, women's employment is unstable compared to that of men. Furthermore, women are responsible for most of care-related work such as child care, nursing care, and household work. Single mothers and women working in non-regular employment face a serious situation. There is an urgent need to not only deal with basic infectious diseases but also address the structural gender issues that Japanese society is facing.

In this study, we examined (1) how to draw the image of teacher, (2) how to perceive educational training. Participants in the study were first grade students at Nippon Sport Science University who were aiming to acquire educational qualifications. The content of the questionnaire focused on the two perspectives: "image of teacher" and "teacher practice". Factor analysis was performed on each of these questions to extract each factor. We compared each element with the degree of desire to become a teacher (4 groups) and obtained the following results. (1) Factor analysis. As a result of factor analysis of 25 items related to the image of the teacher, 5 factors of "credibility/trust", "stability", "ability", "severity", and "experience" were extracted. As a result of factor analysis of 25 items related to practical training, 4 factors were extracted: "confidence as an apprentice", "understanding of practical training", "preparation for practical training", and "anxiety about practical training". (2) Degree of desire to be a teacher. Comparing the scale scores of each factor according to the degree of teacher aspiration, the score of the group with the highest desire to become a teacher was high.

This research examined how teacher's intrinsic motivation for teaching affected learner's intrinsic motivation for learning topics through expectancy formation (i.e., social contagion of the motivation processes) and how this processes were moderated by learner's intrinsic motivation to enter university. We conducted a longitudinal survey of Japanese first-year undergraduates (N=637) within a half-year class. Multi-group structural equation modeling showed that learner's perception of the teacher's intrinsic motivation was positively related to learner's expectancy of learning topics and teaching, but this expectancy was positively related to later learner's intrinsic motivation only in the group with high intrinsic motivation to enter university. This research suggests that learner's individual differences such as intrinsic motivation to enter university might moderate social contagion of the motivation processes. In terms of motivating university students, it is important to provide opportunities for them to develop an interest in learning at university besides their academic performance among high school students.

The purpose of this study is to examine the psychological structure of "images of KENDO" in university Kendo club students. This study included 235 subjects (89 male, 146 female), who were asked to write the 10 sentences that came to mind after the phrase "Kendo is" on a questionnaire. Of those sentences, they were asked to choose the one sentence evoking the strongest image of Kendo. Text mining of selected sentences extracted words, and the relations between them were analyzed. Both male students and female students cited "disciplining the human character" and "training the mind" in their images of KENDO.

Although research on resilience has been attracting the attention of researchers as an important concept to support the psychological wellbeing of sick children, studies on resilience of children with allergies is still inadequate in Japan. This study identifies future research agenda for the field. First, we reviewed research on resilience and provided its definitions and history. Then, we summarized the development of resilience in Japan and found that there are very few empirical studies on factors influencing resilience in the nursing field. The study contends that research on determinants of resilience among children with allergies is needed and suggests that the resilience-related model applied to normal junior high school students can equally be applied to adolescents with allergies. However, the causal relationship among variables of the resilience-related model has not been determined. This study proposes that the resilience-related model for children with allergies should be generalized through a longitudinal research.

This study aimed to explore the relationship of trust in actors related to criminal justice with attitudes toward criminal justice and to identify the determinants of trust. A questionnaire was administered to 332 Japanese adults. The following results were obtained: (1) trust in actors was generally determined by respondents' perceptions on actors' value similarity, capacity, and fairness; (2) the relationship between trust and perceptions varied depending on respondents' level of interest in crime-related issues; and (3) while attitudes toward criminal justice were related to trust in researchers, victims, prison officers, politicians, community members, and judges, they were not related to trust in policemen and prison officers The implications of these findings have been discussed.

The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of internal working model on subjective well-being and interdependent happiness and the interactions between internal working models (consisted in secure, ambivalent, and avoidance). Two hundred ten undergraduates completed measures of Internal Working Model Scale (secure, ambivalent, and avoidance subscales), Subjective Well-Being Scale and Interdependent Happiness Scale. The results of hierarchical multiple regression indicated the interactions of secure, ambivalent and avoidance on subjective well-being. Furthermore, it indicated that interaction of ambivalent and avoidance on interdependent happiness. The result indicated that was shown that balance of each pattern of internal working model (secure, ambivalent and avoidance) affect to happiness. Results suggested the importance of examining the influence of interaction between secure, ambivalent, and avoidance on psychological health.

The present study investigates the influence of utterance speed and pitch, two paralinguistic characteristics, on inference of personality, based on a two-stage inference hypothesis. The hypothesis assumes that traits from speech are inferred from paralanguage mediated by impression of speech. Participants were 49 native Japanese speakers who had normal hearing. Experimental stimuli were 9 speech tokens that had different speaking rates and pitches, which were created from an artificial voice. The experiment proceeded by having participants respond to 1 item after listening to each stimulus once. Items that asked participants about speech state impression and those that asked about personality were presented in different sections. Results of path analysis led to two models. The speech state impression formation model showed influence of paralanguage on impression formation of speech state. The trait inference model showed influence of paralanguage and formation of speech state impression on inference of personality. Thus, these results suggest that personality is inferred both directly from paralanguage, and indirectly from formation of speech state impression.

University students may experience emotional problems such as anxiety and depression while seeking employment. These may have a negative effect on the performance accomplishment of job hunting activities. In this study, the effect of irrational beliefs on the stress response and performance accomplishment of seeking employment was examined. The participants included 136 university students. Results revealed that the irrational beliefs of dependence and Helplessness have a negative effect on the stress response while job hunting. Furthermore, these irrational beliefs, through the intervening variable of emotional disturbance, have a negative effect on the performance accomplishment of seeking employment.

The purpose of this study was to construct the perfectionism scale focused on uncontrollability for elementary and junior high schoolers (PSEJ). The participants were 747 students of public elementary and junior high school. The participants completed five questionnaires that were the original items of PSEJ, fear of failure, conscientiousness, performance-approach orientation, and performance-avoidance orientation. Factor analysis revealed two factors: perfect-oriented tendency (PT) and concern over perfect (CP). Ten items in the final PSEJ had high reliability and given validity.

In various social situations, ideology, that is, a systematized conception of an idea, places restraints on individual action and judgment from a social perspective and constitutes the basis for appropriate behavior.As a concept, this is explained as the ideal way a person should behave socially, politically, and morally. It is also described as an individual’s social orientation. In recent years, it has been suggested that such individual orientations can be explained by the moral foundations theory, which argues that humans are naturally endowed with moral foundations. Using this theory, this study aims to examine political ideological orientations toward either individualism or collectivism in order to understand Japanese value systems. The study shows that moral foundations can predict individual political orientations to some extent and can also capture the orientations or belief systems of Japanese people based on their moral judgments, their political orientations and preference for cooperation and collectivism. The study shows that ideologies can partly be explained through psychological perspectives.

This study explores what are the problems of “Religious Pluralism” of John Hick (1922-2012). First by representing the intellectual situations in which the idea of “Religious Pluralism” was presented to the theological world, and then by surveying the arguments about the “three categories” which define what Christianity as a religion considers itself to be, the author examines theoretical difficulties in Hick’s doctrine about “Religious Pluralism” in connection with the Christian idea of salvation.
