Yeast is promising microbe to applying for brewing, bread-making, and some fermented foods, and to development recently for producing bio-ethanol. Yeast exists also in the deep-sea and the many species have been described from the deep-sea in previous reports. Most of the deep-sea yeasts are "non-conventional yeasts" including approximately 1000 species excepting well-known <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i> and <i>Schizosaccharomyces pombe</i>, in the best of our knowledge. Yeast isolated from the deep-sea often possesses unique metabolic properties. We recently focused on a biosurfactant producing yeast, strain SY62, which was isolated from at a depth of 1,156 m in Sagami Bay in Japan. Although the yeast indicated little difference from conventional Pseudozyma hubeiensis on taxonomy, the secreted glycolipid-type biosurfactant, mannosylerythritol lipids (MEL), indicated structurally differences from those of conventional strains. The structural differences on MEL produced by SY62 resulted in the good hydrophilicity compared to those produced by conventional strains. The results indicated that the deep-sea bio-resources have great potential for exploring novel useful microorganisms and metabolites. The difference of metabolites seemed to be caused by evolution under high-pressure stress in the deep-sea.<br>

The surgical treatment of craniocervical junction (CCJ) instability has recently undergone significant development and change. Posterior instrumentation surgery has been the mainstay of treatment of CCJ instability, and is the focus of this review. For the treatment of atlantoaxial instability, C1-2 transarticular screw fixation has shown good stability, and has been regarded as the "gold standard" procedure. Because of potentially hazardous complications including vertebral artery injury, however, C-1 lateral mass-C-2 pedicle screw fixation is gaining popularity. For treatment of atlantooccipital instability, occipitocervical fixation using screw constructs (combined with either rods or plates) has shown more stability than sublaminar wiring techniques, and has been utilized more frequently. Both innovation in material engineering and in vitro biomechanical studies have contributed significantly to the development of more rigid internal fixation devices, and as a result, many patients who would have been treated conservatively with external orthosis are treated nowadays with instrumentation surgery, resulting in earlier ambulation, shortened hospital stay, and earlier recovery into social activities. New surgical techniques and instruments, however, need to stand the test of time to see whether they are free from long-term adverse events. The rapid turnover of new surgical techniques and hardware has made it difficult for less experienced surgeons to keep up with the latest developments. Conventional techniques can be safer and less technically demanding than newer techniques for those who are not familiar with them.

This paper aims to reinterpret the activities of the Manga Artists' Association, the Tokyo-Manga-Kai, in terms of a movement attempting to improve the social position of manga, through a socio-historical consideration of the group's significance and limitations. This study seeks to overcome the limitations of conventional studies of manga history by avoiding the a priori assumption that "manga" was always a self-evident category. Rather, it aims to understand how it became possible for manga to be established as a cultural field and how artistic productions came to be consumed as manga. Additionally, the study aims to problematize these as historical phenomena in their own right. To clarify these points, this study focuses on an association of manga artists, rather than readers or the works themselves. Between the Meiji and Taisho periods, the referential category of "manga" encompassed a wide variety of representational forms, with only vague boundaries between manga and other representational media. To understand manga in contemporary terms as the category that oscillated between multiple boundaries, we need to question how manga artists had defined their own position by prioritizing their self-definition. Therefore, this study focuses on Japan's first association of manga artists, the Tokyo-Manga-Kai, and undertakes an analysis of the group's activities. The results of my analysis revealed that, in the Taisho period, without the establishment of manga as an autonomous and bounded field, manga artists were situated in a multi-layered and ambivalent position between the categories of art and journalism, and carried out various movements to define their position. While these movements may appear to have led to the promotion of manga and manga artists, they did not ultimately lead to the elimination of characteristic ambivalence.

森永乳業は2004年12月,68拠点を結んだWANを再構築した。狙いは「とにかくネットワークのサービス・レベルを向上させること。現行の通信コストを上回らない範囲で,より高速な回線を導入した」(執行役員 情報システム部長 木村康二氏)。 全拠点のアクセス回線を1Mbps以上に高速化し,NTT東日本/西日本のフレッツ回線を利用したバックアップ網も構築した(図1)。

第43次日本南極地域観測隊(43次夏隊)は,みずほ高原において地殻構造の解明を目的に,ダイナマイト震源による地震探査を行った.この探査と同時に,探査測線下の基盤地形の詳細な分布を求めるため,アイスレーダーによる測定を実施した.本報告では,アイスレーダー測定の概要と得られた結果について報告する.
