Background:Numerous studies have reported the association of cardiovascular risk factors with pulmonary embolism (PE), but the association of dietary factors, especially fish intake, with the risk of PE has not been fully established.Methods and Results:Using a prospective design, we studied the risk of PE mortality in relation to fish intake in 90,791 community-dwelling men and women in Japan aged 40–79 years. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for PE death were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model. Compared with participants in the lowest fresh fish intake group (<1 time/month), the HRs (95% CIs) for PE death for those in the other intake groups were 0.35 (0.08–1.59) for 1–2 times/month, 0.19 (0.05–0.69) for 1–2 times/week, 0.20 (0.06–0.74) for 3–4 times/week, and 0.18 (0.05–0.66) for fish intake every day. In addition to these findings, compared with the participants in the lowest 10% of ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake, those in the other groups had a 60–76% lower risk of PE death.Conclusions:Fresh fish intake, even 1–2 times/week, is associated with a lower risk of death from PE among Japanese men and women.

The proposed study aims to examine the relation between the Tibetan Plateau (TP) thermal condition and El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO). There were significantly positive correlations between the snow water equivalent (SWE) over the TP from November to next April and sea surface temperature (SST) in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) in Novmber from 1987 to 2005. SST in EEP in November is most significantly correlated with the TP-SWE in next April, which suggests an accumulative effect of the ENSO on the TP snow cover. Although El Niño conditions could bring anomalous snowfall over the TP by generating a wave train entering the North African-Asian jet, it is questionable if this impact could change the thermal condition over the TP. There was almost no significant negative correlation between the SWE and TP surface temperature (representing the TP thermal condition) in winter. This suggests that the TP thermal condition hardly varies with the anomalous snowfall caused by this ENSO impact, despite some cooling effect of snowfall during the El Niño phase. On the contrary, preceding El Niño conditions tended to be associated with increasing TP surface temperature in May and there were significant positive correlations between SWE in April and TP surface temperature in May and June. ENSO might play a part in affecting TP thermal condition in a way that is quite different from the previous research. A plausible mechanism based on the relation of ENSO-TP thermal condition has been proposed. The mechanism explained the direct and indirect effects of ENSO on the TP thermal condition and role that the seasonal progress can play in this relation. The issues about snow cover aging and the impact of global warming, among others, were also included in the mechanism.

気温の年々変動に着目して,大雨特性が気温の高低によってどう変わるかを調べるために,暖候期(5〜10月)の平均気温に基づいて地点ごとに温暖年・寒冷年を10年ずつ抽出し,それぞれ10年分のデータから暖候期における総降水量,降水日数,日・時間・10分間単位の確率降水量を求めた.ここでは,推定誤差の小さい確率降水量を得るために標本数の多い日別値データを用いた.温暖年と寒冷年における暖候期の平均気温の差は地点平均で1.1℃であり,ほとんどの地点で総降水量と降水日数は温暖年により少なくなっている.大雨を「総降水量に対する相対量」で定義するならば,大雨の度数は温暖年により多くなっている.確率降水量が寒冷年より温暖年に多い地点は,時間スケールが短くなるにしたがって増えており,これは,温暖年における大雨の特徴として,より短時間の大雨,すなわち「強雨」が多いことを示している.また,北陸地方で温暖年の確率降水量がより多く,南西諸島,四国南部から関東南部までの太平洋惻地域で寒冷年の確率降水量がより多いという地域的特徴が認められた.

Makoto-San and Hanako-San is written as a book of Japanese Language to be used at first for children entering the elementary school. Mrs. Jeidy (CIE) made suggestion for content. It was arranged in the stories which were short but continuous as to theme and characters. More repetition of words was used and fewer new words were introduced. (6 July 1948) The Ministry of Education had revised the pre-primer according to suggestion. Mrs. Jeidy approved. (26 July 1948) "Makoto-San and Hanako-San" has changed much improvement for new Pre-Primer.

Detailed characterization of the whole rock composition of the ejecta of the 1986-1987 eruption of Izu-Oshima volcano by the XRF technique (FUJII et al., 1988) clearly indicates that the ejecta from the central crater of Miharayama (Crater A) are different from those erupted from the fissures (Fissures B and C) on the caldera floor and on the outer slope of the main stratovolcano. This suggests that the conduits which led the A and B, C magmas to the surface were separated physically from each other down to a certain depth. The ejecta from A crater resemble closely to those erupted during the past 1300 years (Y magmas) while the ejecta from B and C fissures are unique in composition among the Izu-Oshima magmas. The A and Y magmas are Fe-enriched island arc type tholeiites that must have been derived from the primary tholeiite magmas through crystal fractionation of olivine, pyroxenes and plagioclase. The B and C magmas can be derived simply through crystal fractionation of A or Y magmas leading to Fe-enriched basaltic andesites, andesites and dacites. This strongly suggests that an isolated pocket of magma starting with a composition of Y underwent strong fractionation to produce volatile enriched ferroandesitic magma. This body of magma was probably activated by the sudden depressurization caused by shattering and fissuring of the crust to form a 1500 m high fire fountains and to produce a sub-Plinian scoria fall deposit. The vent of A crater must have been stable at least during the last 1300 years and directly, or through the subsidiary magma chamber(s), connected to the main chamber above the Moho, where an extensive crystal fractionation has been taking place to produce Y magma from the parent tholeiitic magma. Marked ground depression and extension and migration of seismicity observed during the eruption suggest a possibility that a substantial amount of additional magma was intruded to form a NW-SE trending dike during the peak phase of the eruption. This is in harmony with the Nakamura’s model of the volcano with the NW-SE trending dike swarm which is controlled by the regional compressional stress field. However, gravity and some other grophysical data suggest that the deformation could have been the result of underground cracking without magma injection. Our model is not conclusive on this matter and the expectation that this eruption will eventually lead to the large-scale activity that has been recurring in every 130±50 years is yet to be tested.

The acoustic characteristics of sound fresh tea leaves were determined nondestructively by ultrasonic transmission analysis. As thickness increases, phase velocity and wavelength increase, and damping ratio and dynamic viscosity decrease, suggesting development of the fibrous tissues, accompanied by frequency convergence. The velocities of all the leaves studied were smaller than that of pure water. Decrease in viscoelasticity corresponds to increase in dynamic modulus. Thus, acoustically, we can regard the leaves as natural quasi-polymers with high viscoelasticity.

Imaging MS is a new tool to map the spatial distribution of molecules including secondary metabolites on the biological materials. By using combinations of scanning system and various methods for ionization, matrices, and mass apparatuses, we can detect localization of biomolecules in tissues. Recently, we applied Imaging MS to intact plant tissues by the in house-developed apparatus which has the refinement of Matrix Associated Laser Desorption/Ionization-Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (MALDI-FTICR) MS incorporating ultra-high mass resolution, ultra-high molecular mass accuracy and high spatial resolution. This Imaging MS analysis succeeded in visualizing of cellular localization of secondary metabolites of Catharanthus roseus stem tissues glued to a small conductive glass.
