In the midst of the current reproducibility crisis in psychology, pre-registration is considered a remedy to increase the reliability of psychological research. However, because pre-registration is an unconventional practice for most psychological researchers, they find it difficult to introduce pre-registration into their studies. To promote pre-registration, this article provides a detailed and practical step-by-step tutorial for beginners on pre-registration with Open Science Framework. Furthermore, a typical example what beginners might experience and ways to resolve such issues are provided as supplementary material. Finally, we discuss various issues related to pre-registration, such as transparent research, registered reports, preprints, and open science education. We hope that this article will contribute to the improvement of reproducible psychological science in Japan.

In this paper, I discussed new forms of researcher evaluation in psychological research with the view of solving the reproducibility problem. I demonstrate that the current researcher evaluation system is severely biased, rather encouraging publication of less reproducible findings with fraud or bad practices. To alleviate this bias, the proposed remedies include the limitation of duplicate awards, reputation-based individual research indicators, and clarification of contributions. In addition, the evaluation by researchers from society is also biased; therefore, spins, conflicts of interest, and public involvement in research have been raised as important issues. I hope that these discussions will be noticed by interested parties who are not interested in them.

The purpose of this study was to develop the Japanese version of the Disgust Scale-Revised (DS-R-J). The participants were 1063 Japanese people (mean age = 21.64, SD = 7.33, range = 18–77; 581 males and 482 females) and were separated into three different groups. Participants in samples 1 (n = 481) and 2 (n = 492) provided data for examining the factor structure and validity of the DS-R-J. They completed the DS-R-J as well as questionnaires assessing disgust propensity and sensitivity, anxiety sensitivity, state and trait anxiety, affective state, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants in sample 3 (n = 90) provided data for estimating the test–retest reliability of the DS-R-J. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the three-factor structure involving core disgust, animal-reminder disgust, and physical and mental contamination disgust. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were sufficient, and conceptual validity of the DS-R-J was also supported. The results show that the Japanese version of the DS-R-J is a reliable and valid measurement of disgust sensitivity.

Clusters of holes, such as those in a lotus seedpod, induce strong discomfort. This is called ‘Trypophobia’. Recently, some researchers addressed what trypophobia is and try to form theories on it. We overviewed the previous studies of trypophobia that have published and presented up to now, and discussed the mental mechanism. Moreover, this article is aimed to ignite future studies of trypophobia by pointing out some unsolved issues and proposing potential solutions.

Several studies on scientific replication and meta-analytic approaches have illustrated the issue of low reproducibility or low effect size in psychology and related fields. Herein, the author described not only the problems generally underlying fields (e.g., questionable research practices and misconduct) but also problems specific to cognitive psychology. Reproducibility or effect size of experimental studies has gathered little attention from researchers in cognitive psychology. In addition, the lack of cognitive studies on researchers in cognitive psychology is related to the disregard for motivational factors on the reproduction/replication problems. Based on the understanding of these issues, the author discusses how future cognitive psychology can overcome them.

【目的】大腿骨近位部骨折術後症例を対象に,神経筋電気刺激療法(以下,NMES)を併用した膝伸展筋力増強運動を実施し,下肢機能および動作能力に与える影響を検討すること。【方法】大腿骨近位部骨折術後症例82 名を術式別に層別化してNMES 群とコントロール群(NMES なしでの筋力増強運動)に無作為に割り付け,術後翌日から各介入を実施した。評価は膝伸展筋力と日本整形外科学会股関節機能判定基準(以下,股関節JOA スコア)を測定し,日常生活動作と歩行の獲得日数を記録した。【結果】NMES 群はコントロール群よりも膝伸展筋力と股関節JOA スコアの有意な向上を認め,日常生活動作や歩行の獲得が有意に早かった。また,NMES 群の方が退院時の歩行レベルが高かった。【結論】大腿骨近位部骨折術後症例に対する術後翌日からのNMES を併用した膝伸展筋力増強運動は,膝伸展筋力の早期改善および日常生活動作や歩行の早期獲得に寄与し,退院時歩行能力を向上させる。

Facial attractiveness is influenced by various personal and environmental factors. The present study investigated whether the gender environment surrounding observers affected facial attractiveness judgments. Students at single-gender (58 females) and mixed-gender (59 males and 46 females) universities participated in the experiment. Each of 15 male or female faces was morphed, respectively, with a female or male averaged face derived from the other 14 female and male faces, resulting in feminized and masculinized faces. Observers were simultaneously presented with one masculinized and one feminized morphed face and asked to judge which was more attractive. The results showed that students at a women's university judged feminized male faces as significantly more attractive than did students in a coeducational university. The present findings suggest that adaptation to female faces in a single-gender environment increases the processing fluency of female faces, therefore inducing higher preference.

Many studies have suggested that the knowledge of picture books possessed by caregivers predicts their children’s language abilities, reflecting the richness of linguistic inputs in shared book reading. Previous studies have measured knowledge of picture books by asking caregivers to check the items they know from the lists of titles and authors of popular picture books (Title/Author Recognition Test). However, these studies have been conducted only in English-speaking countries. We developed a Japanese version of the Title/Author Recognition Tests to measure the picture book knowledge of Japanese caregivers. In Study 1, Japanese caregivers completed questionnaires on title/author lists that we developed and some measures related to shared book reading. The results revealed significant correlations between recognition scores and measures related to shared book reading. In addition, the score on the title list correlated with the age of the eldest child, which reflects the length of child-rearing experience. In Study 2, we compared the recognition scores of the caregivers with students of a course on childcare worker training and students with little experience of caring child. The results showed that the recognition scores varied reflecting both child-rearing experience and childcare worker training. These results suggested the validity of the recognition lists we developed. Future research is needed to investigate whether the scores on the recognition lists are related to children’s language abilities.
