We placed observers' interpersonal communication-cognition as a social skill and investigated the mechanism behind it. From the result of Study 1, although ability in face-to-face approaches influenced the accuracy of an observer's judgment of interpersonal communication in highly expressive conversations that were easy to judge, this did not occur in low-expressive conversations that were difficult to judge, suggesting a relationship between the two. In addition, to examine clues for improvement in accuracy, we conducted a lens model analysis in Study 1. Interactants' judgments about conversations were positively correlated to speeches and negatively correlated to adapters, while those of observers were positively correlated to speeches, gestures, and smiles, resulting in asymmetry of interpersonal communication-cognition between interactants and observers. In Study 2, a series of observational experiments showed the possibility of improvement in accuracy by skill training. These results suggested the validity of the placement of observers' interpersonal communication-cognition as a social skill and helped to explain some part of its mechanism.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exchanging emoticons through mobile text messages on interpersonal emotions. We examined whether reciprocal use of emoticons influence interpersonal emotions, by using the scenario method. The scenarios used were either usual mail exchanges, such as waiting for a friend (Study 1), apologizing, and being accepted by a friend (Study 2), or being rejected by a friend (Study 3). Results of Studies 1 and 2 indicated that positive emotions decreased and negative emotions increased when an emoticon was not used in response to a sent message with an emoticon, which could be caused by the violation of the reciprocity norm. In Study 3, the reciprocity norm had no effect and while positive emotions increased, negative emotions decreased as a result of emoticons in messages that were received. These results suggest that reciprocal use of emoticons is important in cooperative mail exchanges, such as usual communications, and when being accepted, but not important in non-cooperative situations, such as being rejected.

本研究の目的は,関係に対する展望が対人コミュニケーションに及ぼす影響を関係継続の予期と関係継続の意思の観点から検討することである。先行研究では,実験操作による外発的な関係継続の予期に注目していた。そこで本研究では,自発的に生起した関係継続の意思に注目して,これらの関係に対する展望が対人コミュニケーションに及ぼす影響の共通点と相違点を調べた。未知関係20組40名と,友人関係25組50名の大学生が実験に参加した。結果は以下のとおりであった。先行研究と一致して,これからも関係が続いていくと思うときは,コミュニケーションの動機づけが促進されて,対人的志向性の個人差が消失した一方で,その場限りの一時的な関係と思うときは,社会的スキルの高い人ほど,積極的にコミュニケーションに取り組んでいた。また,先行研究では,関係継続の予期があるときは相手を知るために視線量が増加したのに対して,本研究では,関係継続の意思があるときは発話量が増加して,対人コミュニケーションをポジティブに認知していた点が異なっていた。そして,関係継続の意思が対人コミュニケーションに及ぼす影響の程度は,友人関係よりも未知関係において大きかった。

How do people inferentially evaluate others' levels of intimacy with friends? We examined the inferential evaluation of intimacy based on the observation of interpersonal communication. In Experiment 1, participants (<i>N</i> = 41) responded to questions after observing conversations between friends. Results indicated that participants inferentially evaluated not only goodness of communication, but also intimacy between friends, using an expressivity heuristic approach. In Experiment 2, we investigated how inferential evaluation of intimacy was affected by prior information about relationships and by individual differences in face-to-face interactional ability. Participants (<i>N</i> = 64) were divided into prior- and no-prior-information groups and all performed the same task as in Experiment 1. Additionally, their interactional ability was assessed.<b> </b>In the prior-information group, individual differences had no effect on inferential evaluation of intimacy. On the other hand, in the no-prior-information group, face-to-face interactional ability partially influenced evaluations of intimacy.<b> </b>Finally, we discuss the fact that to understand one's social environment, it is important to observe others' interpersonal communications.

認知スタイル (Verbalizer-Visualizer) とジェスチャー頻度の個人差の関係が分析された.大学生(35 ペア)が,事前に閲覧した映像を対面・非対面条件において互いに説明する実験に参加した.その後,彼らは,Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire (VVQ)に回答した.実験参加者が説明している間のジェスチャーはビデオテープに録画され,表象的ジェスチャーとビートジェスチャーとがカウントされた.その結果,VVQ高得点者は,非対面条件に比べて,対面条件においてより多くの表象的ジェスチャーを行っていた.しかし,VVQ低得点者は,両条件において,表象的ジェスチャーの頻度に違いは認められなかった.認知スタイルや対面・非対面条件はビートジェスチャーには影響していなかった.このことから,表象的ジェスチャーの頻度に影響を与える個人内要因は,状況(対面・非対面)によって異なると考えられる.
