The purpose of this paper is to give an at least somewhat satisfactory answer to the question why Counts linked indoctrination with democracy. In order to understand the relation of these two concepts, I interpret it not from the premises of Marxism-Leninism but, in accordance with the two following moments, from his theory of social reconstruction. One moment if the historical relativism implied in the historical concurrence theory of his friend Villard; the second is the moral 'faith' which is consonant with 'American culture', or 'American civilization conform to Villard's conceptions. As a result, the following conclusions are drawn : 1) Counts' democracy is neither a form of a narrow political system nor a doctrine for constructing a closed world. Basically, it implies moral faith concomitant to social relations in a typically American agricultural society. 2) This democracy is neither something which the child can weigh and choose nor a substantialized value nor something which can be taught as a political doctrine; it is essentially the outcome of a subconscious compulsory act (coercion) of the American= democratic social order. 3) However, at a time when the democratic social system and the faith embodying American culture are blocked, the school must increasingly strengthen the compulsory action (i.e. indoctrination) in order to save democracy. 4) Finally, Villard's historical relativism was chosen by the sociologist Counts as his own standpoint (normative proposition) and serves as a politico-philosophical enhancement of his theoretical moment; including some degree of conjecture, I may say his American 'faith' as such becomes the existential moment so to speak for overcoming a crisis.

(1) Erich Fromm's theory of “self-realization” has developed through the process of critical examination into S. Freud's biological-deterministic rationale and his own cultural-deterministic one in his early works, and it consequently includes both of these factors as the vital components.(2) In his theory, therefore, a human-being is regarded as an existence who can realize his own primary potentialities to be for himself only through his self-determining, spontaneous-productive activities as the responses or re-actions to his biological/socio-cultural determinants. In this sense, man's self-realization is the very process of such productive re-activities.(3) The essential point of the controversial issues between Fromm and the other members of the “Frankfurt School” -Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse-is concerned with the objective possibility of self-realization within the real context of the present society. However, Fromm's rebuttal against their negative arguments concerning his self-deterministic rationale seems to be insufficient so far as I know.(4) In his theory, the possibility of self-realization is based on his “faith” -or “paradoxical hope” -n human nature inherently having potential powers and strivings for self-realization within itself. By this faith, his practical efforts in psychiatry and his own self-realization have been supported and, at the same time, the faith itself has also been verified through these experiences.(5) Thus, we can grasp the innate construction of Fromm's theory of self-realization as follows.a) His theory is based on the self-deterministic rationale on man's personality.b) But the biological/cultural determinisms are still alive, because in his theory man's self-realization is regarded as the process which is constructed only through his productive re-activities to his own biological/socio-cultural determinants.c) His self-deterministic rationale is founded on the above-mentioned “faith”. In other words, the theory of self-realization is the very product of this faith.(6) The essential process of what is called “ self-formation ” (Selbst-bildung) in educational philosophy can be identified with the self-realization through man's spontaneous-productive re-activities.

People living at home with chronic respiratory failure must struggle to live in the face of various difficulties and distress. But their experience has not been investigated up to now. This study focuses on the experience of people living with this chronic respiratory failure. It is also an experiment in practical nursing research. Four patients and their families agreed to be participants. The patients are sufferers of chronic respiratory failure undergoing long term oxygen therapy at home. The methods used fieldwork at such places as outpatient departments, patient group activity situations and the patients' homes. Several formal and informal interviews were also conducted over a period of six months. Through fieldwork and interviews, I endeavored to come into contact with their actual sense and experience of life. I have described the findings under three headings : "Breathing and Moving", "Living with Suffering", and "Devising Life Strategies". First, I describe the experience of "Breathing and Moving". The participants actually feel that each and every breath supports their life. They must concentrate their consciousness to breathe in order to make each movement, and choose every movement carefully. For those people living with chronic respiratory failure, the simple act of breathing becomes the primary action supporting their life. They cannot entrust their lives to their body's automatic breathing, but must always be conscious of their breath. Second, I describe the experience of "Living with Suffering": The participants find hope and courage for themselves from contact with other patients' lives. When they observe something, they perceive a meaning in it to apply their life. They face the inevitability of life, and make new efforts to live themselves. Thus they maintain their will, and resolve "I want to do this" or "I don't want to become that". Lastly, I looked at the concept of "Devising Life Strategies": There are produced from their earnest desires. The patients devise the strategies themselves through a long groping process. The strategies may be called a technique for living. However, it is important to emphasize that they do not talk freely about the Strategies to medical workers. In conclusion, those living with chronic respiratory failure live in a world experienced through their body. Understanding of their subjective experience is produced through contact between the lives of patients and that of the researcher. The world of meaning and emotion world cannot be approached merely from an objective perspective.

We examined physical fitness adaptation after six weeks of snow shovelling using different types of shovels. Thirty-three subjects participated in this study and were divided two groups: normal shovel group and less-workload shovel (UD-shovel) group. Grip strength, vertical jump, 10 m obstacle walking, chair rising test, lactate threshold and body mass were measured before and after six weeks of snow shovelling. All measurements showed no significant differences between the groups. The chair rising test and ten meter obstacle walking were significantly at main effects. These values were higher in the after period than in the before period. But there were no significant differences at main effects in grip strength, vertical jump, lactate threshold and body mass. These results suggest that six weeks of snow shovelling may not affect upper body strength and aerobic capacity, but may affect lower body and muscle of trunk strength, power, agility, balance and coordination. These effects were not different if using normal shovels or UD-shovels.

Whereas Einstein's theory claims that non-Euclidean geometry should hold in the presence of a strong gravitational field, "the bending of a light path" is meaningful only when we presuppose the classical Euclidean space. This situation shows that there is a kind of measurement problem of general relativity. The present author discusses this problem and underscores the point that the revolutionary character of general relativity consists in its prediction of some phenomena which can be observed but cannot be explained without ad hoc hypothesis in terms of classical standpoints concerning space-time. Furthermore, the present author analyses the concept of 4-dimensional neighborhood of relativity physics. We must drastically change the classical concept of neighborhood of space and time. The objectively valid definition of the neighbourhood of an event is the 4-dimensional space-time region of |ds|<ε, and neither of |dt|<ε nor of |dl|<ε. The so-called light cone (|ds|=0) acquires an intuitive meaning of the realm of presentational immediacy as a three dimensional space with a temporal depth.
