Background:Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is a life-threatening disease that is frequently under-diagnosed.Methods and Results:We used a nationwide inpatient sample to identify CS patients from 2005 to 2011 in the USA. The annual admissions of CS increased from 1,108 in 2005 to 2,182 in 2011, representing a 2-fold rise over a short time. The proportions of CS patients with severe comorbidities, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation and heart failure all increased from 2005 to 2011. However, the in-hospital mortality rate declined.Conclusions:An increasing trend of CS was observed. Cardiologists should notice that CS is not as rare as thought.

Canine histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a malignancy originating from the histiocytic cell lineage and characterized by poor response to chemotherapy and short survival time. Mutation of the TP53 gene and its association with poor prognosis has been reported in several canine tumors. However, the mutation of this gene has not been investigated in canine HS. The aim of this study was to examine a TP53 gene mutation in dogs with HS. Aberrations of the TP53 gene were examined by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism analysis and DNA sequence analysis, revealing mutations of the TP53 gene in 12 (46%) of 26 dogs affected by HS. The incidence of the TP53 gene mutation was relatively high in canine HS compared with other canine tumors. Among these mutations, 10 of 12 dogs (83%) with a TP53 gene mutation harbored the same mutation: a 2-base (AT) insertion in exon 5, resulting in the introduction of a stop codon (c.446_447insAT, p.Tyr150SerfsX8). Further studies are needed to examine the functional change due to the mutation and its association with the pathogenesis of canine HS.

深海底堆積物コア中の底生有孔虫殻の酸素同位体比カーブは,これまでに数多く報告されてきた.それらは,過去の気候変化と海水準変動にとって充分に確立された信頼のおける指標である.将来の気候で起こりそうな動向を理解するためには,過去の間氷期の記録において最も温暖であった期間を正確に見極めることが必要である.この総説で,われわれは過去の間氷期の温暖な程度を理解するために,過去42万年間のこれまでに報告された9つの高分解能な酸素同位体記録を比較した.その酸素同位体比の変動から描き出された間氷期の暖かさの順番は,海洋同位体ステージ(MIS)5.5>9.3>11.3>1>7.5である.この間氷期の暖かさの順番は,Lisiecki and Raymo(2005)の標準酸素同位体比カーブと,また南極のEPICAドームCの氷床コアの水素同位体比カーブときわめてよく似ている.とくに,MIS 5.5中の最も温暖な期間における相対的な海水準は,MIS 1の期間よりあるいは現在より,おそらく約7±4m高かったであろう.一方,MIS 11.3は,過去の5つの間氷期の中で最も長い温暖期であることが明らかになった.この観察事実は,温暖化が進行している将来の地球環境を予測するためには,MIS 5.5と11.3の詳細な研究が本質的で重要であることを明瞭に示唆している.

The atypical cutaneous tumor of a 9-year-old mixed breed female dog was examined. The tumor was well-demarcated and histologically composed of a trichoblastic area, tricholemmal area and apocrine glandular area. Neoplastic cells in trichoblastic area and tricholemmal area had PAS-positive granules in the cytoplasm and were positive for pan-cytokeratin, cytokeratin 5/6, 14 and 19 and p63. Neoplastic cells in trichoblastic area were also positive for cytokeratin 15 and CD34. Neoplastic cells in apocrine glandular area were positive for pan-cytokeratin and cytokeratin 7, 18 and 19. Myoepithelial cell proliferation with osteocartilaginous metaplasia was observed in this area. Since neoplastic cells showed multiphenotypic differentiation for hair follicles and apocrine glands, the present case was diagnosed as a cutaneous mixed tumor.

Peat from highly organic soil is abundant in Northern Hokkaido, Japan. In the past, peat was used in various applications in Japan, such as an artificial culture of soil, as a fertilizer for gardening, and as an energy resource. However, peat is not used by the modern energy and manufacturing sectors in Japan because it has a high moisture content and low calorific value, which lowers its value as a resource considering its material characteristics and handling difficulties. Furthermore, large amounts of peat are generated at the construction sites in this area, and they are difficult to be reused at their generation sites because peat is a very soft soil and not suitable for construction work. Recently, many Japanese research institutions have been carrying out research and development on renewable energy resources including biomass energy. In Hokkaido, there are many biogas plants for methanizing biomass derived from livestock excrement or food waste. Thus, peat which is high in organic matter could potentially be used as an energy resource. In this study, we investigated the potential of utilizing peat as an energy resource for biogenic methane production in regional cities of Northern Hokkaido, while considering both its material characteristics and resource circulation. Batch tests using a hydrogen peroxide solution were performed on peat and silty soil to estimate the quantity of low-molecular-weight organic acids and the producing potential for biogenic methane gas. The oxidative decomposition of the peat produced a high yield of low-molecular-weight organic acids that were used as substrates for methanogenic microorganisms. In addition, a novel resource circulation method was proposed for peat in order to use it as an energy resource. Moreover, the energy resources problem in Northern Hokkaido was discussed in association with geographical parameters and the construction recycling system in Japan.

A study on the influence of solar activity and phases of equatorial quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on tropical rainfall over India has been made. The results of the total rainfall over the country indicate that during the period of low solar activity, excess/normal rainfall (frequent floods) are associated with the westerly phase of QBO and deficient/normal rainfall (frequent droughts) corresponded to the easterly phase. During the period of high solar activity only normal rain is observed when QBO is in its westerly phase. Multiple regression analysis has employed to estimate the summer monsoon rainfall using sunspot number and equatorial zonal wind at 15-20 hPa during January-February as independent parameters. A study on the spatial variability of monsoon rainfall in response to the solar activity and phases of QBO has also been attempted.

A 7-year-old Duroc sow exhibited emaciation, loss of appetite and rapid breathing, and was euthanized. Histopathological examination revealed mild to moderate fibrosis of the heart, cystic kidneys and ulcerative enteritis associated with Balantidium infection. Additionally, a small nodule was incidentally found in the peripancreatic fat tissue. The nodule consisted of disarranged cellular components: pancreatic islet cells (either insulin-, glucagon- or somatostatin-positive), pancreatic acinar cells, hepatocytes (human hepatocyte-positive) and ductal cells (cytokeratin 19-positive). Some of the human hepatocyte-positive cells were also positive for chromogranin A and cytokeratin 7, indicating that they were hepatic progenitor cells. The nodule was therefore diagnosed as hamartoma, probably originating from a fragment of the caudal verge of the liver bud, which contains hepatic and pancreatic progenitors.

Satellite-based navigation rapidly evolved into an efficient tool extensively used in a wide variety of civilian applications covering numerous modes of transportation, communication, administration, geodesy, agriculture, and many others. The current systems globally available are the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and the conceptually very similar Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). Considering the worldwide applications, GPS clearly predominates over GLONASS. However, GPS and GLONASS are mainly under military control of single nations and, also critical, do not fulfill certain performance requirements of the civil users, especially in terms of safety-critical applications. Thus, augmentations to the current systems and even completely new systems are under investigation. These are usually summarized under the abbreviation Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). The various types of GNSS are described where emphasis is put on the future US and European contributions to the second-generation GNSS, i.e., the modernized GPS and the definition of the new European Galileo system. These two systems may be characterized as “compatible competitors”-thus, one might ask for whom the bell tolls.
