Histiocytic sarcoma is a progressive and fatal malignant neoplasm that mainly occurs in middle- to old-aged dogs. This study describes clinicopathological, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of intracranial histiocytic sarcomas in 23 dogs. Magnetic resonance imaging and/or computed tomography of the brains revealed that the tumors mainly located in the cerebrum, particularly the frontal lobe. Seizure was a predominant clinical sign in most of the cases. Histologically, the tumor cells were morphologically classified into round/polygonal- and spindle-shaped cell types. There was a significant association between tumor cell types and hemophagocytic activity (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in other clinicopathological parameters and mitotic index between the 2 types. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were strongly positive for HLA-DR, Iba-1 and CD204 in all the 23 cases, for iNOS in 20, for CD163 in 17, for lysozyme and CD208 (DC-LAMP) in 9, and for S100 in 5 cases. In addition, the Ki67-proliferative index showed range of 0.50–64.33% (Average 26.60 ± 3.81%). These observations suggest that canine primary intracranial histiocytic sarcomas tend to exhibit both dendritic cell and macrophage phenotypes of histiocytic differentiation.

To ensure the success of reintroduction programs, it is important to monitor the post-release behavior and survival of released animals. In this study, the post-release movement and behavior of 5 wild and 5 head-started hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys imbricata were monitored using ultrasonic telemetry. Their dispersal directions and recaptures may indicate that wild turtles perform homing migrations. However, the head-started turtles showed non-uniform patterns in dispersal movements. Four head-started turtles moved out of the monitoring area in various directions, whereas one turtle stayed within the monitoring area for approx. 10 mo. These results might indicate that head-started turtles wander aimlessly in their new surroundings. Signal reception patterns indicated that wild turtles were active in the daytime and rested under the coral at night. Although the head-started turtles also rest at night, their resting places did not seem to be sheltered from hazardous sea conditions or adequate for efficient resting. Therefore, head-started hawksbill turtles appear to need pre-release training such as exposure to structures or ledges in the rearing tank so they can utilize similar structures in the wild for shelter during rest periods and maximize their dive duration by employing these as a roof to counteract the positive buoyant effect of inhaled air. Prey analysis of a head-started turtle captured incidentally demonstrates that these turtles can make feeding adaptations to adjust to the natural environment. These findings provide constructive information for the implementation and improvement of head-start programs.

Background: Health literacy affects the acquisition of health knowledge and is thus linked to health outcomes. However, few scales have been developed to assess the level of health knowledge among the general public.Methods: The 15-item Japanese Health Knowledge Test (J-HKT) was developed by using item response theory to score an item pool. We examined the construct validity of the J-HKT in relation to health literacy items, and analyzed the sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with poor health knowledge.Results: We enrolled 1040 adult participants (mean age, 57 years; women, 52%). The 15 items that best identified people with poor health knowledge were selected. For all items on the J-HKT, the information function curves had a peak in the negative spectrum of the latent trait. As compared with participants reporting high levels of income, educational attainment, and literacy, those with low levels of income, education, and literacy had a lower total score on the J-HKT. As compared with non/light drinkers, moderate and heavy drinkers had lower total scores on the J-HKT.Conclusions: The J-HKT may prove useful in measuring health knowledge among the general public, and in identifying and characterizing those with poor health knowledge.

来たるべきスマート社会においては,多種多様なアプリケーションやサービスが生まれ,ユーザはモバイル/ウェアラブル端末を含む多様なデバイスを複数併用してそれらを利用し,ユーザに対する情報は増える一方,ユーザの「注意」(アテンション)は貴重な資源となり,コンピューティングにおけるボトルネックとなる.本研究では,コンピュータシステムから多種多様な情報通知が行われる状況において,ユーザの認知負荷上昇を抑制できる情報通知のタイミングを検知する基盤技術「Attelia」を提案する.Atteliaはユーザの様々なモバイル/ウェアラブルデバイス上で,生体センサを必要とせず,多様なサービス・アプリケーション側への改変を必要とせず動作し,実時間で情報通知タイミングを検知する.本稿ではスマートフォン上でのAtteliaプロトタイプ実装に基づき,その有効性を示すため被験者30人による16日間の研究室外ユーザ評価実験を行った.その結果Atteliaが検知したタイミングでの情報通知は,ユーザの認知負荷を33.3%減少させる効果を確認できた.

Examining the profile diagrams of various plant communities showing the vertical distribution of the amounts of leaves and other non-photosynthetic organs at respective horizons above the ground, a close correlation was found between the distributions of the two amounts. The amount of leaves existing above a certain horizontal level in a plant community was always-proportiona1 to the sum of the cross-sectional area of the stems and branches found at that level. This led to a new interpretation of plant form, in which the stem and branches were considered as the assemblage of unit pipes each supporting a unit amount of photosynthetic organs. In trees, the disused pipes, which had once supported the leaves on the already shed-off branches, remain in the trunk and boughs together with the working pipes connected with the living leaves. A specific shape of tree Shoot is thus formed. This pipe model theory on tree form proved to be applicable to various conifers and hardwoods.

砂漠は暑熱乾燥の最も厳しい環境である. このような環境で人間が住み働きうる能力は, 体温調節と水分代謝をいかに円滑に行うかに依存しているといえる. ここでは, 自然の砂漠環境で行われた実験に限定して, 人間の汗腺活動と水分代謝に関する知見を概説した. 砂漠では発汗疲労は観察されていない. 総発汗量は脱水または水分および塩分補給による影響は受けず, 年令や人種による差も認められていないが, 男は女より明らかに大量に発汗することが知られている. 口渇を癒す為に飲む水の量は汗の電解質濃度とよく相関している. 砂漠での歩行では, 体氷分の1時間当りの損失が体重の1.5%以下であれば, 発汗によって失われた水分および塩分に相当する量を定期的に補給することにより, 脱水を防ぐことが可能である. しかし体重の3%を越えるような場合には, たとえ水分および塩分を補給しても失われた体水分の50%程度しか回復しない.

19–22 May 2022 Kyoto, JapanJuvenile Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis, PBF) are still small (about 20cm in fork length, FL) and so weak that even direct touch to the fish can cause fatal damage. Their vulnerability makes it difficult to collect vital data in the natural environment over the past years. We developed an operational instrument for smooth and quick attachment of tags. Fish was kept in the water even during the operation and we shorten the operation time to be 30-60 seconds. Also, the mechanical progress (archival tags downsized dramatically) contributed to the survival rate. The movement patterns of the juvenile PBF was investigated using the archival tags implanted in a fish during August in 2012, 2013 for 75, 62 individuals (18-33cm FL). Twenty one tagged fish were recaptured in total (recovery rate 15.3%), and we downloaded data successfully from eight of thirteen tags recovery. One tagged juvenile, which recorded for 79 days from August to October off Kochi (grew up from 24.5 to 50.0cm in FL). Our data showed that the tagged juvenile moved between coastal areas and offshore into the Kuroshio Current, thus the offshore coverage of their habitat could be restricted to the Kuroshio Current in their nursery areas.

1957年3月に開催された国連の第3回科学委員会に,各国から提出されたSr-90の資料に基いて,1951年のはじめから1955年の秋までの5年間に,地表面に蓄積したSr-90含量の世界的分布を求めた.主なる汚染源としては,第1図から明らかなように,太平洋のビキニ環礁,ソ連のカザツク地方(黒海とバルハシ湖の間)およびアメリカ合衆国のネバダの三点がある.前二者では,水爆実験も行われているので,原爆実験のみを行っているネバダにくらべれば,汚染度は高い.第1図によると,ソ連の実験とネバダの実験では,汚染地域は偏西風にのって西から東にのび,ビキニでは逆に偏東風で西にひろがっている.これは地球上の風系と全く一致しているところである.<BR>1955年秋までに地表面に蓄積したSr-90の総量は地球全体で0.7メガキユリーとなる.北半球には地球全体の80%,その中,東半には,地球全体の約57%が集まっている.緯度による分布をみると,第2図(A)に示すように,北緯20°と50°附近の2ヵ所にピークがみられる.前者はビキニ実験によるものであり,後者はソ連の実験によるものである.第2図(B)には北半球を東半,西半にわけての分布を示した.東半の分布は第2図(A)と同じような形であるが,西半は40°附近に一つのピークがみられる.これはネバダの実験によるものであり,前者に比べれば,その汚染度は低い.
